BACK HOME FOR A RARE NOON GAME The women’s basketball team returns home after a road trip that saw Memphis visit both teams from last year’s national championship game last week. Memphis went 0-for-2 on the swing, which snapped a three-game Tiger winning streak that started with a road win at UCF in our first meeting this season. ABOUT UCF UCF is looking to snap a seven-game losing streak heading in to the Wednesday afternoon match-up. The Knights were dealt a setback when leading scorer and pre-season all-conference sophomore guard Briahanna Jackson left the team on Jan. 9th, right before the Knights hosted Memphis for the first meeting. UCF battled in that game, trailing just 38-35 at the half, but could not battle all the way back. The Knights have had time to make adjustments to Jackson’s loss now and senior forward Sara Djassi has stepped up to help assume some of the scoring burden. Djassi averages 12.0 ppg, while freshman guard Zykira Lewis adds 10.8 points a night. UCF leans on a strong defense to help offset the 17.8 ppg loss of Jackson. The Knights have held their last three opponents to a 59.7 ppg average, including holding Cincinnati to just 47 points on their home floor on Saturday. Inside, the Tigers will have to account for Stephanei Taylor, who ranks 6th in the conference in blocked shots (1.3/game) and ranks in the UCF career top 10. Brittni Montgomery leads the Knights off the glass with 8.7 rpg and ranks fifth in the league. This is the 20th meeting between Memphis and UCF. UCF leads the overall series 10-9. GETTING ON THE GLASS Memphis is 7-1 when they out-rebound their opponents and 3-9 when they don’t. In the loss at Louisville, Memphis had a season-low seven offensive rebounds. Part of that low number was the Tigers having Pa’Sonna Hope and Asia Fuqua-Bey available for just seven minutes in the first half of the game due to foul trouble. Both Tigers fouled out of the game, as did reserve post Courtney Powell. The other part of that equation is the Tigers’ shot 50.0 percent from the field in the game (24-for-48), their third-highest shooting percentage of the season. On the defensive glass, Memphis has been upside down in second chance points in four of the last six games. In the win over Rutgers, Memphis held a 14 point advance in second-chance points. The Tigers were even in the win at UCF, but have given up more offensive rebounds that their opponents have stuck back for points in each of the last three games. In league play, the Tigers are being out-rebounded by a -3.1 margin. MACK WITH A CAREER GAME AT LOUISVILLE The Memphis bench out-scored the Louisville bench, 37-27 on Sunday. Part of that was due to the effort of senior guard Devin Mack. Mack was 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range to finish with a career-high 12 points. It was the second double-digit scoring outing of the season for Mack, who scored 11 points in the Tigers’ win at Wright State earlier this season for her other double-digit effort. ROWSER HIGHLY EFFICIENT IN LOUISVILLE GAME Redshirt sophomore Mooriah Rowser had her most efficient shooting night of the season in the game at Louisville. She was 7-for-10 from the field, finishing with 14 points. She scored 12 points in the second half alone against Louisville, at one point knocking down 12 of 13 straight points for the Tigers. THAT’S FOUL! Memphis has been battling an old foe as of late -foul troubles, particularly in the front line.

UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

Three different Tiger posts fouled out of the game at Louisville, including starters Pa’Sonna Hope and Asianna Fuqua-Bey. The foul issue has been a road block for the Tigers’ points in the paint hopes, particular since Hope had gone four straight games with double-digit points. That streak was snapped against Houston, a game she tried to play, but could only go for six minutes due to illness. Hope had just four points in the game at UConn, where she picked up her first foul 45 seconds in to the game, and she scored two points in just 11 minutes at Louisville. Fuqua-Bey had her consecutive games with double-digit streak snapped due to her foul issues at Louisville. She finished with four points on 2-for-4 shooting. She had averaged 12.7 ppg in the three games leading up to the Louisville game. Fuqua-Bey was also held without a rebound for the first time this season and just the third time for her career. UCF is the wrong opponent to be battling foul troubles against. Last year, the Knights attempted 48 freethrows in the meeting with the Tigers in Orlando. LIFE ON THE SCOUTING REPORT Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn knows she has drawn attention to herself with her play to date so far this season. As opposing teams have more film to watch, they have slowed the Memphis guard down a bit. She is shooting 37.5 percent from the floor over the last five games and 26.9 percent from three-point range. Her scoring average has only dipped a bit though to 14.8 ppg in the last five games (her scoring average is 17.7 ppg for the season). FUQUA-BEY LOOKING FOR 400TH POINT? Sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey is 30 points shy of hitting the 400 point barrier. She has 340 career points through 52 games heading in to the rematch with UCF. Fuqua-Bey moved in to the Memphis starting lineup as a freshman last year just 14 games in to her Tiger career. She has now started 39 straight games for the Tigers. STRIVE FOR SEVENTY Memphis loves to run offense. When the Tigers score 70 or more points, they are 8-1. When they are held to 69 or fewer points, they are 2-9. ROWSER KNOCKS DOWN 200TH CAREER POINT After scoring 24 points in first collegiate game last year, redshirt guard Mooriah Rowser was on pace to break through the 200 point mark sooner than Sunday before a knee injury sidelined her for almost all of last season. With her 14 point night at Louisville, Rowser now has 207 career points. HEARN LOOKING FOR CAREER POINT 800 Through 52 career games, sophomore guard Ariel Hearn has been a consistent scorer. She is averaging 15.3 ppg for her career (17.7 ppg this year). She comes in to the first meeting with Louisville with 795 career points, 5 shy of the 800-point mark and 205 shy of the 1,000 point mark. With 10 regular season conference games left and at least one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn would need to average 18.6 ppg over the rest of the season to hit the 1,000 point mark this year. That would make her the first Tiger to hit the 1,000 point mark in two seasons since Brittany Carter did it after transferring to Memphis from Georgia in her 60th career game. Fastest to 1,000 career points 54 games -- LaTonya Johnson (sophomore year) 55 games -- Keeta Matthews (sophomore year) 60 games -- Brittany Carter (senior year) 62 games -- Kitty Allen (junior year) 64 games -- Tamika Whitmore (junior year) OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? The Tigers have played 20 games this year, but have

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 105-78 (.574) Career: 155-148 (.512)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player

Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

played almost 21 games worth of minutes. Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, fyi. FUQUA-BEY FIRST HALF HOLDS OFF COLD NIGHT FOR TIGERS With a number of Tigers under the weather, the Tigers’ shooting against Houston was icy cold -- if not for sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey. Fuqua-Bey had 18 first half points in the win against Houston. She finished 9-for-15 from the field. The remainder of the Tigers’ starters were 6-for-32. FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT Memphis brings a three-game winning streak in to Wednesday’s match-up with UConn after upsetting No. 23 Rutgers, 74-73, in overtime in the Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. That win was the first over a ranked team for Memphis since a 64-58 win over No. 20 DePaul on Jan. 26, 2003 (also a conference game). The win improved Memphis to 2-0 all-time against teams ranked No. 23 in the country and was the program’s 19th win over a ranked opponent in 93 tries. ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE SEASON Tuesday’s win over Rutgers was the first time this season the Tigers trailed at the half and came back for the victory. At one point, Memphis trailed by 11 points in the first half. That’s the biggest margin of deficit erased by Memphis this season. The previous best was 10 in the first game of the season against East Tennessee State. Memphis is 1-6 when trailing at the half this season. ANOTHER DOUBLE DIGIT DAY FOR HEARN Ariel Hearn went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line in the waning minutes of the win over Houston to finish with 10 points, her 16th double-digit scoring outing in 18 games this year. In her 50 game old Memphis career, Hearn has scored double digits 40 times. Hearn has posted 20+ point games eight times already this season and now has 12 20+ point games for her young Tiger career.

FRESHMAN POINT GUARD PUSHING TOWARD 100 Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran is 13 assists shy of the 100 assist mark. Only two other freshmen in Memphis history have dished out 100 or more assists in a season. The first was Ruth Ann Forsythe in 1983-84. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Hearn owns the freshman single season assist record with 109 assists last year. Wilder-Cochran has 87 assists against 68 turnovers and had a three-game, double-digit scoring streak snapped against Houston. She was held without a made field goal for the first time in conference play, finishing with two points from the free-throw line. HOPE MISSES BULK OF HOUSTON GAME Senior Pa’Sonna Hope tried to play through illness on Saturday, but could manage just six minutes before the Tiger coaching staff put her on the bench. The single-digit minutes were the fewest of her career and were part of a four-game, double-digit scoring streak getting snapped against Houston. Her fourgame double-digit streak started the last SWAIN STEPS UP AGAINST HOUSTON Senior guard Jasbriell Swain started the second half for the Tigers against Houston with Taylor Williams already tagged with two fouls. Swain responded by knocking down her first career triple for the Tigers

and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, adding four rebounds. The six points was the most of her Memphis career. Swain joined Memphis as a walk-on after spending the last three seasons at Binghamton University, where she was an America East all-defensive team honoree. She was awarded a scholarship before the team’s game at UALR in the fourth game of the season. FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American’s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th. Asia Fuqua-Bey FUQUA-BEY HITS GAME-WINNING FREETHROWS VS RUTGERS Asia Fuqua-Bey was 0-for-2 from the free-throw line against Rutgers when she was sent to the line in overtime with a pair of free-throws in the double bonus. Her first make tied the game at 73 and her second gave Memphis the one point advantage that held up as the clock wound down. The two makes as the game wound down got Fuqua-Bey to 10 points, giving her double-digit points for the first time in six games for the Tigers. She finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. HEARN EYING CAREER RECORD BOOK Ariel Hearn is eight three-point field goals shy of breaking in to the single season top 10 in three-point field goals made with 44 made triples this season. She needs 52 to catch Jessica Hall’s mark from the 2007-08 season. For her career, Hearn is 29 threes shy of 100 as a Tiger. In school history, only eight other players have knocked down 100 or more threes in a career. HOPE PUTS UP DOUBLE DIGITS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT NIGHT Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope had a tough shooting night from the field in the opening half of the Rutgers game, but stayed strong at the free-throw line, hitting 6-for-8 and finishing with 16 points for her fourth straight double-digit scoring night of the season. Hope has scored double-digits in all four conference games this season and it is the first time in her Tiger career that she has scored double digit points in four straight games. The Cleveland native now has nine double-digit scoring games this season after hitting 10 or more points just five times last year. TWO POST DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN WIN OVER RUTGERS Memphis had two players put up a double-double in the win over No. 23 Rutgers Tuesday night. Pa’Sonna Hope had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Fuqua-Bey finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. That was the fifth double-double of the season and the sixth of her career for Hope. It was the second of the season and the third of her career for Fuqua-Bey. WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played five overtime games
