WRAPPING UP NON-CONFERENCE PLAY The game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff is the final non-conference game of the year for the Tigers. Memphis is looking to finish with a non-conference record of over .500 at the end of non-conference play for a sixth straight season under Melissa McFerrin. Prior to McFerrin taking over the Tigers, Memphis had not posted a winning record at the end of nonconference play since going 7-6 in 2004-05. This will be Memphis’ third game in seven days, as the Tigers won at Tennessee Tech in double overtime, Saturday, then snuck past Mississippi Valley State, Wednesday, before hosting UAPB, Friday. MIDWAY POINT OF FOUR-GAME HOME STAND The game against UAPB on Friday night will be the mid-way point of a season’s best four-game home stand for the Tigers. Memphis is 4-1 in home games this year and will close out the home stand with conference games against Temple (Dec. 29) and Connecticut (January 4). Memphis will follow this four-game home stand with a two-game road trip in conference play at SMU (Jan. 7) and at UCF (Jan. 11). A LITTLE BIRTHDAY SHOPPING? Memphis will be going for a win on Friday night, which also happens to be head coach Melissa McFerrin’s birthday. McFerrin was recognized prior to the Mississippi Valley State game for her 100th Tiger victory, which Memphis picked up at Tennessee Tech on Saturday. HEARN TIES CAREER HIGH AGAINST MVSU Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn tied a career-high with 26 points in the win over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday night. Hearn knocked down four triples in that way, giving her 26 threes on the season. Last year as a freshman, Hearn hit 27 threes for the entire season. Hearn also tied a career-high with four offensive rebounds in the win vs. MVSU. HEARN GOES FOR 20 AGAIN In addition to the career-night scoring, Hearn finished with 26 points, her third 20-plus point night in four games. She has now scored 20 or more points in five games this year, one more than all of last year. She has also scored 20 or more points in back to back games twice this year. She has not scored 20 or more points in three straight games in her career yet. Hearn has scored double digit points in nine of 11 games this year and in 33 of 43 career games. FUQUA-BEY FOLLOWS FIRST 20-POINT NIGHT WITH A DOUBLE-DOUBLE Asia Fuqua-Bey followed her first career 20-plus point night with a double-double against MVSU. She finished with 12 rebounds (a career-high) and added 10 points. She also added a career-best three blocks to go with three steals in 33 minutes of play. In the last two games, the sophomore forward is averaging 15.5 points and 10.0 rebounds a game. MACK HITS BOARDS FOR CAREER NIGHT Senior Devin Mack finished the MVSU win with six rebounds and nine points. The three defensive rebounds was a career best for the senior, who got the

game started by running the lanes for a pair of quick buckets in transition for the Tigers. Mack also connected from three-point range as part of a 6-for-9 half from beyond the arc for the Tigers. Mack has hit a triple in three straight games heading into Friday night’s game against UAPB. WILLIAMS LOGGING MAJOR MINUTES Freshman Taylor Williams has been playing a bit out of position this season with the shallow Memphis bench in the front court. But the freshman is hitting her stride. After playing a career-high 35 minutes in the double-overtime win at Tennessee Tech, she followed that solid effort up with a career-best 10-point night that included a pair of three-point field goals in the win over Mississippi Valley State. She also had her second-best rebounding night of the season, finishing with seven rebounds and adding a career-best three steals. WILDER-COCHRAN MAKING HER MARK Freshman Breigha Wilder-Cochran has made an immediate impact at point guard for the Tigers. Wilder-Cochran’s ability to run the offense has freed up sophomore guard Ariel Hearn to play at the twoguard spot, where Hearn has posted five 20-plus scoring nights. As the team’s point guard, Wilder-Cochran will draw fouls as teams try to regain possession of the ball, but the freshman is a perfect 12-for-12 from the line in the last two games and has knocked down 14 straight attempts from the line. Her last miss from the free-throw line was at the 1:04 mark in the win over UAB. GOODMAN CLEARED TO JOIN TIGERS ON THE COURT Freshman post Brandi Goodman has been cleared to join the Tigers on the court after missing all of the preseason up until the MVSU game due to injury. VALUING THE BASKETBALL Turnovers have haunted Memphis at moments throughout the season. Memphis has committed 20 or more turnovers in seven of the first 11 games, including three of the last four games. In individual player stats, all of the Tigers except freshman Breigha Wilder-Cochran have more turnovers than assists. Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 47 assists against 39 turnovers. ON A SEASON-BEST WINNING STREAK Memphis has won three straight games and is looking for a fourth win on Friday. The current threegame winning streak is the season’s longest winning streak to date. ROWSER NAMED AMERICAN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after hitting the game-winning layup in the 78-76 double overtime road win Saturday night. This is Rowser’s second league Rookie of the Week honor. She earned the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers’ regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one. WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played three overtime games (with a 2-1 record) and has played a pair of one-point decisions (with a 1-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin’s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 33-11 in games decided by five or fewer points. HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 101-73 (.580) Career: 151-143 (.514)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player

Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

2012-13..........................................................3-3 2013-14..........................................................3-1 FREE BASKETBALL Memphis went to double overtime for the first time in school history in the win at Tennessee Tech. That was Memphis’ third overtime game this season, marking the first time in school history the Tigers have played three overtime games in one season -- and we’re just in game 10 of the Tigers’ 30-game regular season schedule. The Tigers are now 12-11 all-time in overtime (and 1-0 in double overtime) and are 6-2 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. MCFERRIN’S 100TH TIGER VICTORY Melissa McFerrin is not likely to forget her 100th Memphis win as the Tigers used double overtime to pick up a road win at Tennessee Tech, 78-76. That win was also her 150th career head coaching win. Memphis has had just four women’s basketball head coaches since the program returned as a varsity sport in 1972-73, so McFerrin has a ways to go to move up from third on the Tiger coaching list. Joye Lee-McNelis is second on the list with 229 Memphis wins, behind Mary Lou John’s 368 Tiger victories. ANOTHER FRESHMAN EARNING HONORS Freshman guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran became the second Tiger freshman this season to earn a Player of the week honor, this one from CollegeSportsMadness.com, as she was named the website’s American Athletic Conference Player of the Week following the win over UAB. The Hoover, Ala., native was also named to the American Athletic Conference honor roll for her performance in the 73-72 win over UAB. Wilder-Cochran knocked down two free-throws with four seconds left in that game to help Memphis build a 73-69 lead. The Tigers needed the cushion as UAB hit a three at the buzzer to make the final score 73-72 in the Tigers’ favor. Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 37 assists on the season and ranks second on the team with 12 steals. She also ranks third in scoring with 9.0 ppg. She is the second Tiger freshman to be honored in the first nine games this season. Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week in the first week of the season. GETTING CONTRIBUTIONS FROM BENCH Memphis will need a balanced offense this season while playing with a short bench. In games where Memphis out-scores the opponents’ bench, the Tigers are 4-0. In games where the opponents’ bench players out-score the Tigers’ players, Memphis is 1-5.

PAGE 4

SHOOTING’ FOR 70 In the early going, Memphis seems to be a team that likes offense. When scoring 70 or more points, the Tigers are 5-0 and when held under 70, they are 1-5. TIGERS PICKED SIXTH IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL The Memphis women’s basketball team is a member of the American Athletic Conference beginning this year. The Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, behind defending national champions Connecticut, and national runners-up Louisville. USF, Rutgers and SMU round out the preseason top five i the preseason coaches’ poll. HEARN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn was named to the all-tournament team at the Paradise Jam tournament after averaging 17.4 points per game in the three-day tournament. Against Texas A&M, Hearn finished with 19 points. She was held to just nine points against Syracuse, but opened up her scoring in the second half of the Texas game, knocking down a career-best five three-point field goals for the second time in the

UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

three day tournament and finishing with 21 points. She scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half of the Texas game. Hearn has now scored double-digit points in six of the Tigers’ eight games, including three performances of 20 or more points. She finished last season with a total of four 20-point plus performances, giving her seven for her career. Hearn needs 19 more points to hit the 600 career point mark just 40 games into her college career. TIGERS ADD SIZE IN EARLY SIGNING CLASS Memphis signed five players in the early signing period, adding some size to the front line. Memphis added Alisha Celestine (6-3, Post, Kenner, La./Warren Easton HS), Brea Elmore (5-9, Guard, Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan HS), Amber Holmes (5-7, Guard, Memphis/Overton HS), Damonique Miller (5-11, Wing, Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson HS) and Angelina Williams (6-4, Post, Searcy, Ark./Searcy HS).
