UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

BACK DOWNTOWN SATURDAY The women’s basketball team will be back downtown at FedExForum on Saturday, when they host SMU in the second game of the conference series. SMU won the first game with Memphis in double overtime, 80-75. IN OUR LAST MEETING In the game played in Dallas, the Tigers actually led at the break of the first meeting, 39-31. Ariel Hearn had 11 first half points to go with five assists, two blocks and a steal and Memphis out-rebounded SMU 20-15 in the opening stanza. But SMU took advantage of 11 second half Tiger turnovers, converting them in to 13 points and erasing the halftime deficit. Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but could not convert, and the game went to overtime. SMU took advantage of the free-throw line in the two overtime sessions, going 9-for-13 from the stripe to wipe out a 10-9 Tiger rebounding advantage and offset two more Memphis made field goals in the extra periods. The Tigers committed seven fouls in the overtime sessions, compared to one for SMU. Four Mustangs scored double-digits in the win, which was their first in the newly-renovated Moody Coliseum, led by a double-double from post Akil Simpson, who finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Hearn finished with 17 points, while Hope (14), Wilder-Cochran (12) and reserve post Courtney Powell (10) added double-digits in the loss. SERIES HISTORY This is the 12th meeting between Memphis and SMU. The Mustangs lead the overall series, 7-4 and 4-3 in games played in Memphis. The double overtime meeting with SMU earlier this season was the first extra sessions game between the two squads. THE RESURGENCE OF PA’SONNA HOPE? Pa’Sonna Hope tied a career-high with an 18 point outing against #4/3 Louisville in the Tigers’ last outing. The nine field goals she made in that game snapped her out of a season-high single digit scoring run. It had been seven straight games that the senior had been held to single digits after scoring doubledigits in four straight games starting with first game against Connecticut. Last week, she averaged 12 points and 9.5 rebounds in the Tigers’ two games. Her 52.9 percent mark from the field on Sunday against Louisville was her best since the Jan. 11th game at UCF. YOU GOT SWATTED Hope also posted three blocks in the loss to Louisville on Sunday. That was the third time in the last four games she has posted three blocks in a game. She now has 27 blocks on the season, which ranks fifth among the Memphis single season records for a member of the senior class. She passed Savannah Ellis’ mark of 26 from 2010-11 to move to fifth. She needs three more blocks to match former teammate Nicole Dickson’s mark of 30 from last year. On her two-year Tiger career, Hope has 59 blocks, which is seventh in the career record book at Memphis. Counting her 33 blocks from her two seasons at Ole Miss, she needs eight more blocks to get to 100 for her entire college career. HEARN POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn posted a doubledouble in the loss to #4/3 Louisville, Sunday. She finished with 15 points, and added 10 assists. The double-digit assists is a season-high for Hearn and marks the second time in her career she has had 10 or more assists in a game. In her first collegiate game last year, she dished out 12 assists. That’s also the last time a Tiger has had double-digit assists in a game. That was also Hearn’s second career double-dou-

ble. Her first was a 23 points, 10-rebound effort in a win over Tennessee Tech. WILDER-COCHRAN FOUR ASSISTS FROM FRESHMAN RECORD Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran is just four assists shy of a new freshman single season record. Coming in to Saturday’s game with SMU, she has already doled out 106 assists. Three more ties Ariel Hearn’s record, set last year. Four more sets a new benchmark for first year Tigers. That should hopefully be a record that stands for a while for the Tigers. With both Hearn and WilderCochran underclassmen on the Tiger roster, McFerrin should not need to rely as heavily on a freshman point guard next season. HEARN HELD WITHOUT A FREE THROW TRY Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn experienced something rare on Sunday. She was held without a single attempt from the free throw line. Hearn, who has knocked down 13 straight free-throws, has only been held without a free-throw try in six games this year, all against teams that are or have been in the national rankings or receiving votes in the polls (Texas A&M, Syracuse, Texas, Rutgers, Connecticut and Louisville). LOOKING TO SNAP STREAK The Tigers have lost five straight games coming in to Saturday’s rematch with SMU. The five-game losing streak ties as the longest for a Memphis team since McFerrin’s first season at the helm of the Tigers program in 2007-08. HEARN MOVING UP SOPHOMORE SCORING CHARTS; APPROACHING 900TH POINT Ariel Hearn has scored 450 points this season for the Tigers. That is more than any other Memphis sophomore except six. Brittany Carter holds the Memphis sophomore scoring record, with 654 points (2009-10). Hearn has scored double-digit points in all but four games this year (22 of 26). She comes in to Saturday’s game needing eight more points to hit the 900-point plateau. Hearn is scoring a bunch of her points this year from beyond the three-point line compared to last season. Last year, the freshman was running the point and scored most of her points on the drive and at the free-throw line. This year, she is spotting up from beyond the arc more often, scoring 33.3 percent of her made field goals from beyond the arc. How Hearn Scores It 3 PT FGM FGM FTM 2012-13 27 (17.5 % FGM) 154 107 (24.2 % pts) 2013-14 53 (32.5 %FGM) 163 71 (15.8 % pts) LOOKING FOR OFFENSIVE BALANCE Saturday the Tigers will be trying to build on getting a double-digit scoring effort from a post player for first time in a handful of games. The 18 points from Pa’Sonna Hope may be a building block to put on a push to the end of the regular season. In just three of the Tigers’ 26 games this season the team’s leading scorer has been a post player. In the other 23 games, the leading scorer has been a perimeter player, and in 19 of those games, that leading perimeter player’s name has been Ariel Hearn. Asia Fuqua-Bey has been Memphis’ leading scorer in three games. She is the lone post player to lead the team in scoring in any game this season and in one of those, she and Hearn both led the team in scoring with 21 points (at Tennessee Tech). DOWNTOWN! Hearn has converted 53 made triples this year. For her career, she already ranks in the Memphis career top 10 in three-point field goals made with 80, good for ninth all-time. She will have to get well over 100 before she moves up in the career records. The eighth place spot is at 131 (Kelly Herron, 1997-2001).

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis

At Memphis: 106-83 (.561) Career: 156-153 (.505)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey

Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

LOSING AN EDGE ON THE GLASS .In 11 of 14 conference games, the Tigers have been upside down in rebounding. Memphis has outrebounded conference foes just twice (SMU, at UCF) and was even with UCF in the second meeting.

BENCH PRODUCTION & SHIFTING STARTERS With a 10-player roster (one of whom started the season as a walk-on but was awarded a scholarship -Jasbriell Swain), the Tigers’ shuffling of their starting lineup has affected their bench production. The bench has been out-scored by its counterpart in four of the last five games. The one time the Memphis bench out-scored the opponent’s bench? In a loss at Cincinnati.

mark.

RECORD BREAKDOWN

OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, FYI.

SPEAKING OF THE STARTING LINEUP After going through the first 14 games of the year with just three different starting lineups, the Tigers have had five different lineups over the last seven games, either due to injury, disciplinary issues or just trying to get a hot hand into the lineup. That’s given Memphis seven different starting lineups this season.

FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American’s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th.

ROWSER BACK TO THE STARTING LINEUP Redshirt freshman Mooriah Rowser started the first 13 games of the season for Memphis. After a start against UCF on Jan. 29th, she slid out of the starting line-up for games at Rutgers and against USF. She stepped back in to the starting lineup in the loss at Temple and has now started three of the last five games. In the last five games, she is the team’s secondleading scorer, averaging 9.4 ppg and shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from threepoint range. She enters Saturday’s game against SMU with 262 career points (a 9.0 ppg career average).

WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played five overtime games (with a 3-2 record) and has played three one-point decisions (with a 2-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin’s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 34-13 in games decided by five or fewer points.

OFFENSIVE CHALLENGES Memphis’ offense has hit a rough patch. In the last five games (at Rutgers, vs. USF, at Temple, at Cincinnati, vs. Louisville), Memphis has averaged just 54.4 ppg and is shooting 33.4 percent from the field and 64.8 percent from the free-throw line. On the flip side, the Tigers’ defense is allowing 69.6 ppg over the same five-game stretch. MACK EXPANDING ROLE WITH TIGERS Senior guard Devin Mack came to Memphis last season after spending the first two years of her career playing junior college basketball. She averaged just 1.6 ppg last year, knocking down four three-point field goals for the season. But with her collegiate career end on the horizon, the senior has come on strong as of late. She hit three straight triples in Memphis’ win over UCF, and has knocked down multiple three point field goals in four of the last seven games, including two in each of the Tigers’ road games last week (at Temple, at Cincinnati). After just four triples as a junior, Mack has hit 21 this year, and is shooting 32.3 percent from beyond the arc. Mack needs to land three more triples to rank 10th among Memphis seniors in the single season category for triples made. HEARN LOOKING FOR 100TH CAREER PICK Ariel Hearn is known as a scorer. Last year, she was known for her ability to drive the ball and score through contact, this year, it’s for her work from the three-point line. The next part of her game to get some attention will be defense. She enters the SMU game with 96 career steals, four shy of the century

She earned the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers’ regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one. TIGERS PICKED SIXTH IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL The Memphis women’s basketball team is a member of the American Athletic Conference beginning this year. The Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, behind defending national champions Connecticut, and national runners-up Louisville. USF, Rutgers and SMU round out the preseason top five in the preseason coaches’ poll. HEARN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn was named to the all-tournament team at the Paradise Jam tournament after averaging 17.4 points per game in the three-day tournament.
