Getting Results...

The Tigers are currently on a six-game unbeaten streak. That is the longest such streak since 2011, when the Tigers started that season with a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1). Under Richie Grant, Memphis also put together unbeaten streaks of six games or longer in the following seasons: 2004 (nine games; 8-0-1), 2007 (six games; 3-0-3) and 2011 (six games; 5-0-1).

The Tigers have now had four or more shutouts in 21 seasons in program history. The school record for shutouts in a season is 11 in 1992. The 1992 squad posted shutouts in six of the team’s first seven games. The goalkeeper on the 1992 team was current Memphis women’s soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. S e p t e m b e r 2 8 , 2 0 1 3

2013 Memphis Tigers Soccer SO FAR IN 2013... Defense, Defense, Defense...

The Tigers have allowed six goals through six games, and have already posted three clean sheets. This marks the fourth time since 1999 that Memphis has allowed six goals or less in the team’s first six games (2004, 2007, 2011, 2013). This is the second time in that span where the team has three or more shutouts in six games. Memphis has accomplished the feat two other times in program history. Under Peter Bermel in 1985, the team allowed six goals in six games. Chris Bartels’ 1992 team allowed just four goals in the first six games of the season and posted five shutouts in those games. Memphis has won 10 or more games in all six of these seasons.

In addition, fellower newcomers Fakhry Khulfan, Jordan Klipsch, Kenneth Kauker, Raul Gonzalez and Hunter Danna have also made appearances so far this season. Klipsch and Gonzalez have each started three of the first eight matches this season.

Making an Impact...

The newcomers on the 2013 team have produced 16 of the team’s 30 points so far this season: six goals (Danna 3, Klipsch, Kauker, Khulfan) and four assists (Moeller, Gonzalez-3).

Home Openers...

With the Sept. 6 1-0 victory over UMKC, Memphis holds a 23-6-3 record in home openers, and has outscored opponents 75-37 in those 32 games. In 12 years at Mike Rose Soccer Complex, the Tigers are 7-4-2 in their home openers. This marks the fifth time that the Tigers have won their first two home games in a season since 1999 (Grant’s first year). This marks the best home start under Grant since 2009, when the Tigers started 2-0-1.

PENALTY KICK

Keely opened the scoring in the 53rd minute to give Memphis a 1-0 lead. The senior midfielder is now tied with Hunter Danna for the team lead in goals with three. Freshman Raul Gonzalez provided the assist on Keely’s strike, the third helper of the season for Gonzalez. Fakhry Khulfan scored his first goal as a Tiger in the 68th minute to extend the Memphis lead to 2-0. Shane Keely set up the goal, feeding a perfect ball to Quincy Thomas, who then found Khulfan in the box for the finish. Mercer got a goal back in the 71st minute through David Murtaugh who cut the Memphis lead to 2-1. Gonzalez created another chance in the 83rd minute. The freshman made a run into the box and was pulled down by a Mercer defender. Mark Sherrod scored on the ensuing penalty kick for his second goal of the season, and pushed the Memphis lead to 3-1. Memphis played on the front foot for most of the game, as the Tigers were able to pressure the Mercer goal and create scoring chances throughout the game. Gonzalez and Keely were at the center of several of the scoring chances in both halves. Keely opened the game with two shots on goal in the first two minutes of the game, forcing saves from Mercer goalie Greg Ranjitsingh. In the ninth minute, Gonzalez forced Ranjitsingh to make a diving save after great set-up play by midfielder Simon Estornel. Gonzalez tested Ranjitsingh again in the 28th minute, but Ranjitsingh was able to push the ball wide of the post. Cody Uzcategui was called into action in the 34th minute and made a big save on a low, driving shot by Jason Sayers of Memphis. Uzcategui finished the game with two saves and earned his sixth victory of the season. Memphis continued to push in the second half, and the team was rewarded on the goals by Keely, Khulfan and Sherrod.
