WRAPPING UP NON-CONFERENCE PLAY Memphis will wrap up its non-conference slate with two home games this week, starting with Wednesday night’s game against Mississippi Valley State. Mississippi Valley State was 17-13 last season and advanced to the championship game of the SWAC tournament, falling in a 4OT game to Prairie View A&M, 100-87. The Devilettes are off to a 1-7 start so far this season, including an 0-7 mark on the road, but will give the Tigers a lot of work in transition and from the three-point line. MVSU has eight different players who have attempted a shot from beyond the arc. ROWSER NAMED AMERICAN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after hitting the game-winning layup in the 78-76 double overtime road win Saturday night. This is Rowser’s second league Rookie of the Week honor. She earned the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers’ regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one. HEARN PASSES 600 POINT PLATEAU Sophomore Ariel Hearn scored her 600th career point in the road win at Tennessee Tech, Saturday. Hearn hit the 600 point mark in her 42nd career collegiate game. For her Memphis career, she is averaging 14.7 ppg and is averaging 17.7 ppg so far this year, which ranks her third in the American Athletic Conference in scoring. Hearn also leads the American in three-point shooting, shooting 22-for-49 from beyond the arc right now (44.9 percent). The sophomore is also looking for her 100th career steal. She is 17 shy of the triple digit steal mark heading in to the final two non-conference games of the season. FUQUA-BEY COMING OFF CAREER GAME Sophomore forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey is coming off a career-night in the win at Tennessee Tech. Fuqua-Bey finished with a career-best 21 points, adding a career-high four assists, in the win at Tennessee Tech. With the Tigers down by as many as seven in the first half, Fuqua-Bey scored on back-to-back trips down the floor to start a Tiger run that helped Memphis move in front at the half 33-32. FREE BASKETBALL Memphis went to double overtime for the first time in school history in the win at Tennessee Tech. That was Memphis’ third overtime game this season, marking the first timein school history the Tigers have played three overtime games in one season -- and we’re just in game 10 of the Tigers’ 30-game regular season schedule. The Tigers are now 12-11 all-time in overtime (and 1-0 in double overtime) and are 6-2 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. MCFERRIN’S 100TH TIGER VICTORY Melissa McFerrin is not likely to forget her 100th Memphis win as the Tigers used double overtime to pick up a road win at Tennessee Tech, 78-76. That win

was also her 150th career head coaching win. Memphis has had just four women’s basketball head coaches since the program returned as a varsity sport in 1972-73, so McFerrin has a ways to go to move up from third on the Tiger coaching list. Joye Lee-McNelis is second on the list with 229 Memphis wins, behind Mary Lou John’s 368 Tiger victories. WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played three overtime games (with a 2-1 record) and has played a pair of one-point decisions (with a 1-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin’s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 33-11 in games decided by five or fewer points. The Hoover, Ala., native was also named to the American Athletic Conference honor roll for her performance in the 73-72 win over UAB. Wilder-Cochran knocked down two free-throws with four seconds left in that game to help Memphis build a 73-69 lead. The Tigers needed the cushion as UAB hit a three at the buzzer to make the final score 73-72 in the Tigers’ favor. Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 37 assists on the season and ranks second on the team with 12 steals. She also ranks third in scoring with 9.0 ppg. She is the second Tiger freshman to be honored in the first nine games this season. Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week in the first week of the season. GETTING CONTRIBUTIONS FROM BENCH Memphis will need a balanced offense this season while playing with a short bench. In games where Memphis out-scores the opponents’ bench, the Tigers are 4-0. In games where the opponents’ bench players out-score the Tigers’ players, Memphis is 1-5. SHOOTING’ FOR 70 In the early going, Memphis seems to be a team that likes offense. The Tigers have scored 70 or more points in all five victories and when held under 70, they are 0-5. TIGERS PICKED SIXTH IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL The Memphis women’s basketball team is a member of the American Athletic Conference beginning this year. The Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, behind defending national champions Connecticut, and national runners-up Louisville. USF, Rutgers and SMU round out the preseason top five i the preseason coaches’ poll. FORMER TIGER VOTED TO M CLUB HALL OF FAME Former Tiger Tamika Whitmore was voted to the M Club Hall of Fame it was announced on Thursday. Whitmore will become the 13th women’s basketball player to be inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame. Whitmore ended her Memphis career as one of the greatest players in women’s basketball history for the Tigers, earning two Conference USA Player of the Year awards and being named to five different AllAmerican teams, including the Associated Press, the

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 100-73 (.578) Career: 150-143 (.512)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player

Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

Women’s Basketball Journal, the Basketball Writers Association, Kodak and the Women’s Basketball News Service. In her senior season, she led the country in scoring, with 26.3 ppg, and was a Top 10 finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year Award in 1999. She was drafted by the WNBA by the New York Liberty and played 11 professional seasons in New York, Los Angeles, Indiana and Connecticut, while competing overseas in Spain, France, Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic in the WNBA off-season. She was a WNBA All-Star in 2006 while a member of the Indiana roster and in game 2 of the 2006 playoffs, she set a WNBA record for points in a playoff game, finishing with 41 points. HEARN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn was named to the all-tournament team at the Paradise Jam tournament after averaging 17.4 points per game in the three-day tournament. Against Texas A&M, Hearn finished with 19 points. She was held to just nine points against Syracuse, but opened up her scoring in the second half of the Texas game, knocking down a career-best five three-point field goals for the second time in the three day tournament and finishing with 21 points. She scored 19 of her 21 points in the second half of the Texas game. Hearn has now scored double-digit points in six of the Tigers’ eight games, including three performances of 20 or more points. She finished last season with a total of four 20-point plus performances, giving her seven for her career. Hearn needs 19 more points to hit the 600 career point mark just 40 games into her college career. SWAIN EARNS SCHOLARSHIP Walk-on Jasbriell Swain received a surprise on the road at UALR. On Thursday night before the non-conference game in Little Rock, Swain was awarded a full scholarship for her final year of college basketball. Swain joined the Tigers as a walk on once school started after playing the last three seasons at Binghamton University. On November 11th, the Tigers got word from the NCAA that an appeal to the NCAA transfer rule on behalf of Swain had been approved. Swain was a three-year letterwinner at Binghamton, where she was named a member of the American East All-Defensive Team last year and where she was a starter over the past two seasons. As a freshman, she was the league’s Rookie of the Year.

YOU’VE BEEN SWATTED! Pa’Sonna Hope is trying to move into the career record book at Memphis despite being in just her second season with the Tigers. She has 10 blocked shots this season and has 45 for her Memphis career. She needs just nine more to move into the career top 10 at Memphis. If she can get to 54 blocks, she will be tied with Taylor Mumphrey (2009-2011), Raven Rogers (2001-05) and Linda Street’s (1980-81) two years that blocks were kept. For her entire college career (including two seasons at Ole Miss), Hope now has 77 total blocks. TIGERS ADD SIZE IN EARLY SIGNING CLASS Memphis signed five players in the early signing period, adding some size to the front line. Memphis added Alisha Celestine (6-3, Post, Kenner, La./Warren Easton HS), Brea Elmore (5-9, Guard, Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan HS), Amber Holmes (5-7, Guard, Memphis/Overton HS), Damonique Miller (5-11, Wing, Little Rock, Ark./Joe T.
