Tigers vs. East Tennessee State This is the 11th meeting between Memphis and East Tennessee State, a series the Tigers lead 8-2. The two teams have not played since 2000, when Memphis won 90-48 in a game in Memphis. The Tigers have not visited Johnson City since the 1982 season. ETSU won that last meeting in Johnson City, 73-72. Memphis is 1-2 in games played in Johnson City against ETSU. Bringing Dickson Home The East Tennessee series was restarted in order to give Memphis senior forward Nicole Dickson an opportunity to play a game close to home. A 2009 graduate of Greeneville High School, Dickson averaged 21.3 ppg as a senior playing under coach Stacia Crumbley. She finished her prep career at Greeneville with 2,415 points and 1,146 rebounds and was the Greeneville Sun’s Female Player of the Year her senior season. After coming to Memphis, she was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2009-10, finishing second on the team in scoring with 9.2 ppg. That season marked Memphis’ first post-season appearance since 2003-04, when the Tigers advanced all the way to the championship game of the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). She followed that up with a sophomore campaign where she averaged 9.9 points and finished as the team’s third-leading scorer as Memphis advanced to the WNIT and finished with a 21-13 overall mark. Last year, Dickson earned C-USA Second Team All-Conference honors after finishing as Memphis’ second-leading scorer and rebounder. She averaged 13.5 ppg and 8.3 rebounds per game, at one point setting a school-record with seven consecutive games with a double-double. She became just the 22nd player in Memphis history to surpass the 1,000 point mark in a road win at Rice to end the regular season as a junior and heads into Friday night’s game 19th on the Memphis career scoring list (1,158), 8th in three-point field goals made (126), and tied for 17th in career rebounds (597). She was a pre-season All-C-USA pick in a vote of the league’s coaches prior to this season beginning and is Memphis’ one returning starter from last season with the injury to starting point guard Bilqis AbdulQaadir. With the Loss to Prairie View A&M - Memphis suffers its first home loss of the season in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Last year, Memphis lost just one game in the friendly confines of the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. - A number of Tiger newcomers set career highs. Pa’Sonna Hope finished with a career-high 11 points, while freshman Asianna Fuqua-Bey posted career highs in rebounds (9), blocks (2) and steals (4). - Memphis falls to 0-2 against teams from last year’s NCAA post-season tournament field. The Tigers also lost at Middle Tennessee in the second round of the Preseason WNIT. Memphis has one more non-conference game remaining against an NCAA tournament team and that will also be played in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse when Memphis hosts UALR, Friday, Dec. 7th. - Memphis used its third different starting lineup in five games. The first three games, Memphis had an established line-up, but freshman Mooriah Rowser went down with an injury in the win at Illinois State and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir went down in the win at UT Arlington. Jamila Ajanaku and Jaymie Jackson made their first career starts at Memphis in the Prairie View A&M game. Dickson Drawing Defense After back-to-back 30 point outings, Nicole Dickson drew a lot of attention on the Tigers’ offensive end of the floor against Prairie View A&M, getting face-guarded and drawing double and triple teams any time she touched the ball in the paint. The Tigers will need to establish another scorer to help Dickson out as the season goes on. Rowser and Abdul-Qaadir gave Dickson help in the backcourt, preventing teams from collapsing on her with their mid-range games. The Tigers may spend the rest of the non-conference schedule trying to restructure the offense to include sophomore center Ann Jones, who had career-high 22 points in the win at UT Arlington. Focus on Stronger Start To say the starting line-up got off to a rough start in the first half of the Prairie View A&M game might be an understatement. The five starters (Ajanaku, Hearn, Jackson, Jones and Dickson) were a combined 1-for-19 in the entire first half of the game. Dickson will held to just one first half point on 0-for-6 shooting, while Ann Jones was 1-for-7. The starters also accounted for five of the team’s nine first-half turnovers. Pa’Sonna Hope gave Memphis a spark off the bench, scoring 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting and being the only Tiger to have more than two first half rebounds, but after playing 14 minutes in the first half, she played just three minutes in the second half. Tigers’ Stats Offensive Two Tigers are leading Conference USA in offensive stat categories early in the 2012-13 season. Senior forward Nicole Dickson leads the league in scoring (22.0 ppg) and three-point field goals made (2.8), while freshman Ariel Hearn leads the league with 5.0 assists a night. Dickson also ranks 7th in rebounding (7.4) and field goal percentage (49.4), 4th in three-point shooting (42.4 percent) and is tied for fifth in blocks (1.2). Hearn also ranks 14th in the league in scoring (12.1 ppg) and 10th in freethrow percentage (77.8). As a team, Memphis ranks first in Conference USA with 76.6 ppg and ranks 26th in the NCAA in scoring offense. But that number came with Mooriah Rowser and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir in the line-up for the first three games of the season. The 58 points the Tigers scored against Prairie View A&M was the lowest offensive output of the season for Memphis, as was the 30.2 percent shooting clip from the field. Dickson Goes Hits 30 Point Mark for Second Straight Game Nicole Dickson finished the UT Arlington win with 30 points, marking the first time in her career that she has put together back-to-back 30-point outings. She had set a career-high with 36 points in the win at Illinois State on Sunday. Dickson hit a career-best five three-point field goals in the first half of the win at UT Arlington, finishing with six triples, 30 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double was the first of the season for the senior, but was the 11th of her career.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

Two Over 20 Again In the first four games, Memphis has had a pair of Tigers score 20 or more points in a game twice -- both of those involving Nicole Dickson. In the season-opener, it was freshman Mooriah Rowser (24) teaming with Dickson to score 20 or more points (Dickson finished with 20). In the win at UT Arlington, it was sophomore Ann Jones, who complemented Dickson’s 30 point night with a 22 point effort of her own in a win. Freshman point guard Ariel Hearn just missed becoming the third Tiger to hit the 20-point mark, finishing with 17 points. Another Start for McGraw With the injury to freshman Mooriah Rowser in the Illinois State win, sophomore guard Lauren McGraw stepped into the Tigers’ starting lineup for the first time this season. The role as a starter is one that McGraw should be familiar with. She started four games last season and played in all 32 contests. Tigers Gain Another Player for the 2012-13 Roster Memphis got word on Tuesday that they will have the services of senior guard Jamila Ajanaku for the remainder of the 2012-13 season. Ajanaku is a 6-1 senior guard who transferred back to Memphis from Middle Tennessee State over the summer. Ajanaku played in 38 games with two starts in three seasons at Middle Tennessee. She comes to her hometown team after playing at Central High School in Memphis, where she was the No. 20 ranked wing in the country according to ESPN.com. She received a waiver from the NCAA to play this season in order to be closer to home for family medical reasons. Dickson With a Career-High Sunday Night Melissa McFerrin had her hands full early in the first half of the game at Illinois State. Ariel Hearn and Ann Jones were both on the bench with two fouls when freshman Mooriah Rowser, the Tigers’ leading scorer in the early part of the season, went down with an injury that kept her on the bench for the rest of the game. But Nicole Dickson took on the scoring burden from there, scoring 18 straight points from the 1:23 mark in the first half until the 15:00 minute mark in the second half. Dickson went on to finish with a career-high 36 points on 15-for-25 shooting. Dickson’s 36 points marked the first time a Tiger scored between 35-40 points since Victoria Crawford scored 38 points in a WNIT loss at Western Kentucky in 2004. Dickson Nabs a Pair of Weekly Honors Scoring a career-best 36 points, adding a team-best four steals and two blocked shots to go with two assists in 38 minutes of play helped net senior forward Nicole Dickson a pair of weekly honors. She earned her first career C-USA Player of the Week honor and was also named the Tennessee Sportswriters Association women’s basketball player of the week. It was her first career honor with the TSWA as well. About the Freshman Starters When Ariel Hearn and Mooriah Rowser appeared in the starting line-up in the season opener against Grambling State, they were doing something that isn’t done often at Memphis. They became the first two freshmen to start the regular season opener since Malissa Bush and Kelly Herron appeared in the starting line-up in 1997-98. Memphis lost that game with Bush and Herron in the line-up, 68-65, at Southern Illinois, but that team went on to post a record of 22-8 overall and 13-3 in Conference USA play, winning the C-USA championship and appearing in the NCAA Tournament. Bush and Herron did have some more experienced teammates to help them out though. Former WNBA players Tamika Whitmore and LaTonya Johnson were Tigers teammates to the duo. Dickson Named Pre-Season All-C-USA Senior forward Nicole Dickson was voted to the Conference USA Preseason All-Conference team by the league coaches. The Greeneville, Tenn., native was a second team, all-conference honoree last year and has already started working her name into the Memphis record books. She currently ranks 20th in school history with 1,064 points through three seasons and eighth in Memphis history with 112 three-point field goals made. She needs 19 more triples to move to seventh in career threes, where former Tiger Kelly Herron (1995-2001) currently sits. In the exhibition game against Rhodes, Dickson played just 23 minutes and almost had a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. Tigers Picked Fifth in C-USA Preseason Poll Despite the loss of five seniors from last year’s roster, including C-USA Player of the Year Jasmine Lee, C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Ramses Lonlack and three-time All-C-USA honoree Brittany Carter, the C-USA coaching pool has still has lofty expectations of the 2012-13 Memphis roster with eight newcomers, picking the Tigers to finish fifth in the C-USA Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

RECORD BREAKDOWN

HEAD COACH MELISSA MCFERRIN

MCFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the past four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different Melissa McFerrin players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman 5th Season at Memphis honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at At Memphis: 80-55 (.593) the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 Career: 131-125 (.512) record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
