Today’s Matchup: Memphis (3-1-0) vs. ETSU (1-1-1) Series History...

Season Dedication...

This will be the first meeting between the Memphis Tigers and the ETSU Buccaneers.

The Memphis Tigers are dedicating the 2013 season to former Tiger David Medlock. Medlock was a defender for Memphis from 1998-2000, and played in 24 career games. Unfortunately, Medlock passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer.

Scouting the Bucs...

ETSU’s head coach Scott Calabrese has been in charge of the program since the program’s inaugural season of 2008, compiling a record of 48-39-13 in five-plus years. The Buccaneers won the Atlantic Sun Tournament and made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2010.

For the entire 2013 season, the Tigers will wear a patch with Medlock’s number “3” on their jerseys.

The 2013 team has a record of 1-1-1 in the early stages of the season. The Bucs lost their first game of the season 1-0 against South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Last weekend, ETSU defeated Kentucky 1-0 in their home opener in Johnson City, Tenn., and tied Winthrop 0-0. The leading scorer through three games is freshman defender Thibault Civalier, who scored the game-winning goal in the Sept. 5 game against Kentucky. Senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter has started in all three contests and has posted two shutouts. The 2012 Bucs went 10-6-4 and finished in third place in the Atlantic Sun with a 5-2-1 conference record. The team was 1-0-1 in neutral site games in 2012. Sixteen letterwinners and seven starters return from last year’s team.

“Soccer For a Cure” Classic The Tigers will be playing in the 16th annual “Soccer For a Cure” Classic this weekend in Birmingham. The event will raise money to help aid cancer victims through the sport of soccer. The money raised will be given to cancer research facilities in the Birmingham area. This is the fifth consecutive year that memphis has played in the event (2009-pres.).

Head coach Richie Grant and the entire Memphis men’s soccer program are honored to dedicate the 2013 season to David Medlock and the entire Medlock family.

Memphis Against The Atlantic Sun...

Memphis scored twice in the last five minutes of the match to earn the comeback victory. Memphis outshot the Golden Eagles 13-1 in the match. Mark Sherrod and Benjamin Ciosanski led the team with three shots each. Cody Uzcategui earned his third win of the season in goal. After a scoreless first half, Oral Roberts got on the board first with a 67th minute goal from Alex White. White was able to head the ball past Tigers goalkeeper Uzcategui after a cross from Juan Diego Padilla. The Tigers kept the pressure on the Golden Eagles’ and broke through in the 85th minute. Mark Sherrod created the opportunity after making a strong run toward the box. He passed the ball to Benjamin Ciosanksi, who delivered a great to pass to Danna who was able to chip the ball past ORU keeper Ben LaCourse. With the game tied, Memphis pulled out the victory just before the game ended. In the 87th minute, Memphis was able to get two consecutive corner kicks. On the second kick, Sherrod get his head on a ball from Liam Collins, and Danna was able to knock the loose ball into the net. Both defenses were strong in the first half, as neither side produced many chances. The Tigers had the best chance in the 32nd minute when Sherrod hit the post on a shot from outside the box. Memphis ended the half with four shots. The Memphis defense produced another strong performance in the victory. Memphis returns to action next weekend in Birmingham, Ala. The team faces off with East Tennessee State on Friday and Charlotte on Sunday in the UAB “Soccer For a Cure” Classic.
