Reflection: Sample Students Evaluation/Assessment Instruments
My teaching philosophy is basically based on the student’s motivation and interests. I planned for the student’s assessment in class to be fun and different. I was inspired by how the students love to show off their skills, so every time I gave them work, I gave them an opportunity to express themselves and show their work to the class. Their works were based on drawings, poems, stories, comic strips, etc. Their tests, on the other hand, always had motivating quotes or picturesque drawings son that the pressure would be less. According to Pavlov humans can react to different stimuli which can be reinforced by rewards. I usually used this method with my classes. I always liked to motivate the students in class. It was a way of waking them up and preparing them for the day’s lesson. As long as they had a reward in the end, the activity was worthwhile. I didn’t want my students to rely on rewards, but this is one way of getting them to function in class. I also focused on David Kolb’s learning styles theory. It is definite by now that every students has a different way of learning. I took this fact as an advantage for me, because I love working with individual differences. I consider myself very different, and I know that I learn in a different way. I took into consideration how some are more observable than others, others liked to listen, others liked to see what was being explained, others liked to be more hands on and to work immediately. These were some of the styles that I had to take into consideration when making an assessment for the students. I usually am very open minded, and I let the students give me ideas on how I could give my classes. I also let my students choose on how they would like to do their presentations. This is all part of working with individual differences and styles. Haward Gardner’s multiple intelligences are also a part of my teaching styles. I, myself am very bodily kinesthetic. I like to do things, to move around in class, I like to check up on my students and help them out as much as I can. I also believe that my students are the same way as I. They can’t be sitting a whole hour doing nothing but writing or reading. They need to work they need to practice, but all of this in a fun and interactive way. The grammar translation method was also used in some of the student’s assessments in class. In order for the students to have meaningful learning, I believe they must first know the meaning of the English vocabulary in their own native language. There are so many other strategies and techniques that I could have used with my students, but the time just wasn’t enough. I did the best that I could to push them a little bit further so that they could reach their expectations and go even a little bit higher than expected. My students enjoyed the majority of the assessments that I gave them, so I feel relieved and grateful for haven been given the opportunity to practice with such outstanding group.
