Dear neighbours,

Editor: Debbie Ross

Welcome to this month’s issue of the Melton Messenger TM the free monthly local directory of businesses and services suggested by yourselves for yourselves.

Enquiries & Advertising: 01664 852940

The summer seems to have just flown by this year. Our family spent a pleasant week camping in Devon at the end of August and If the forecast is to be believed we should hold onto the better weather for a little longer. Whilst we were there we visited the South Devon Chilli Farm which has inspired our recipe this month. Speaking of food don’t forget that it is Leicester Food Fortnight from 21st September to 6th October. Here in Melton you can sample some real ales and ciders at the Melton Beer Festival and of course sample lots of delicious food stuffs at the East Midlands Food Festival both of which are held at the Melton Cattle Market. You may also like to celebrate by visiting Brentingby Meadows for a special free farm walk and dairy tour (see p.60) Continuing on from last month’s theme we have lots of newly launched local businesses in this issue. Please do support them and give them a try. Sam is back from his summer holiday again and so you could win one of two £20 vouchers to spend on complementary therapy with Anna Marie Clark. I have used Anna for a neck and back massage and it is a real treat! Competition on page 33. Don’t forget to download our app for all the latest events and local offers and remember that the Find us on clocks go back on Oct 26th! Kind regards

Debbie Ross

8 If the statistics are to be believed many of us will fall victim to crime, but thanks to an extensive range of affordable, simple and easy-to-use home security devices, protecting your property, possessions and family is becoming easier. This is a guide to some of the most popular products around at the moment. Fence Prikka Strip, £8.95 A simple, cheap and effective way of protecting your property from intruders. Each anti-climb strip consists of a series of closely arranged cones that are formed from durable weatherproof PVC. Easy to trim to the size you require, the strips can be glued, screwed or nailed into place and are perfect for use on all perimeter fencing. Byron CS11D Dummy CCTV Camera Unit, £12.29 - Flawlessly replicating a real CCTV unit, the dummy camera is extremely realistic. The accurate design and flashing red light gives the appearance of a genuine and operational camera. Driveway Monitor, £18.49 - Recognising intruders up to 100ft away, the Driveway Monitor offers cordless infra-red detection of heat or movement and alerts the homeowner via a radio signal that’s sent directly to the indoor receiver. Frostfire Home Security Bar, £23.50 Designed for use with both standard hinged and sliding patio doors, the Frostfire Home Security Bar can be wedged at any angle to prevent forced entry. Because it’s made from 20-gauge steel, the bar is incredibly strong and exceedingly robust, and so protects against forces of up to 150 kg. Fake TV Burglar Deterrent, £24 Simulating the appearance of an active television set, the Fake TV helps to create the illusion that someone’s at home by using realistic LED lighting. An inbuilt sensor automatically triggers the system at dusk and thanks to its compact design, it’s perfect for use anywhere in the home.

As part of the scam, the callers request the victims allow the collection of their bank cards via taxi for ' safe keeping ' . Please note that a police officer will at no time ask you for your bank details over the phone or arrange to collect your bank cards as part of an investigation. 12 More of us are open to the idea of seeking counselling to help us cope when life becomes complicated. We go to the gym to feel good physically, we have massages to feel good holistically, so counselling can be thought of as a sort of ‘mind massage’, giving you the opportunity to let your words and emotions out without being judged. The number of people accessing mental health services has risen steadily in recent years, yet not everyone will use NHS services. You might decide to go private for a number of reasons - there may be a waiting list or a lack of availability in your area, for example. “I started off by having counselling under the NHS, but this meant I couldn’t choose my counsellor. I didn’t really get on with her, and I wasn’t able to select what type of counselling therapy she followed,” said Samantha, aged 28. “I decided that it was better to go down the private route.”

What makes a good counsellor? A good counsellor should not judge or criticise you, but instead will focus on what you are saying in order to help you deal with your problems. If you feel that things aren’t going the way you want them to, then you should discuss this with your counsellor first to see if anything can be improved before going to a new one. Regular sessions are also a good idea so that you can start to see a difference. All counsellors are required to have supervision and counselling themselves as part of their training.

Payments and accreditation Fees can differ depending on the experience of the counsellor and the number of sessions you commit to. Ensure that any health professional you go with is registered and approved. You can find out more about this by getting in touch with one of the following bodies or visiting the relevant websites: Taking control of your life • British Association for Counselling and Counselling can help you when you’re Psychotherapy (BACP) struggling to cope, whether it’s for • UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP): depression, stress and anxiety, obsessive psychotherapists compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, drug or alcohol • The British Association for Behavioural & misuse, bereavement, sexuality issues, or Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) post-traumatic disorder and there are many • British Psychological Society: different types of counselling therapies. psychologists There’s no shame in seeking further help. • Association for Family Therapy (AFT): Instead of seeing it as a weakness, it can be family therapists the first step towards taking control of your • British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC): life and finding new strength, especially if you psychoanalytic psychotherapists feel you have nobody close to confide in. • College of Sexual and Relationship A counsellor won’t tell you what choices to Therapists (COSRT, formerly BASRT): make or offer you specific advice, but they couples counselling and sex therapists will guide you and help you understand why you may be feeling a certain way. 14 Chiropractic care is safe for pregnant mums, babies and children. Children are not just little adults – they have specific issues related to birth and development that require attention as soon as possible. We need to ensure that children grow out of problems and not into them. Pregnancy is a time of rapid growth and change, which places physical stresses on the mother’s body and significantly alters posture. Low back, pelvic, mid-back and rib pain are frequently experienced, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy. Chiropractics is a gentle, safe and effective way of relieving these symptoms and preparing the body for delivery. This may speed up delivery times and reduce the need for intervention in labour. All techniques are adapted for the pregnant state, making them safe and comfortable for mum and baby. Birth may be the most traumatic physical event that many of us will experience.

After the baby is born it is important to have a thorough neurological check-up within the first 6 weeks of life. Chiropractic assessment also looks at age specific reflexes, movement of the cranial bones, upper neck, pelvic joints and limbs. Treatment on babies uses no more force than you would place on your eyeball and they respond much more quickly than the majority of adults. Not all chiropractors treat children as they require a different style of treatment to adults. As well as treating babies and children with specific complaints, just as with their eyes and teeth, they benefit from regular check- ups to assess their spine, joints and posture. Rural Ramblings -View from the Farm

Julia Hawley helps husband Ian and his family to run Hall Farm in the tiny hamlet of Brentingby where they have farmed since the 1880’s. Here they manage a traditional mixed farm with sheep, beef, arable and dairy enterprises.

that in the summer our cows are regularly crossing or walking up the lane to access grazing. Luckily we only have 60 cows (the average herd size is 120; many have several hundred) and they have between 20 and a hundred yards to walk (depending on which field they are grazing). Other drivers – often, I suspect, blindly following sat nav directions, come racing down the lane (or As farmers we are increasingly aware of cyclists, minus the sat nav) and try and how far removed most consumers are from drive or ride straight through the cows. Why the production of food even in a rural area do they do that? I know that cows look such as Melton Mowbray. Many commute placid but would they do that with horses? along country roads or work from home in a (…Perhaps best not to answer that!) village but have little Our girls are generally quiet understanding of what is but there is the odd nervy happening in the fields character. Increasing numbers of farmers and farm workers are active on Twitter and through other communities and it can be a great way to keep in touch with customers as well as relieving the isolation of working alone or at unsociable hours. There is a regular ‘roll call’ at #teamdairy when the morning milkers start in the early hours – nice to know that you’re not the only one up at crazy o’clock! We are fortunate in that our neighbours in the villages of Brentingby and Wyfordby (thank you all) are very tolerant of our farming activities and in particular, the fact

This is just one example of why it’s important that we as farmers engage with the public. Regular readers will know that we often welcome groups to the farm. We are planning a couple of free farm walks this autumn for the general public (see events page at the back of the mag). Perhaps you’ve seen the film Mr Moo Man and want to know a bit more about dairy farming. Or you might just fancy some fresh air and want to join in an event for Leicestershire Food Fortnight. We look forward to seeing some of you; in the meanwhile if you’re coming through Brentingby and you see some cows on the road, please STOP – they only take a minute! 18 Buying and selling property at auction can be an exciting experience. Properties of all types are sold at auction. From a seller’s perspective the big advantage of a sale by auction is that as soon as the hammer falls the property is sold and the buyer is bound to complete. The auction contract will state the completion date (often 28 days from the date of the auction but not always) and contracts are exchanged at the moment the hammer falls. From a buyer’s perspective there are a number of factors to consider. A buyer should always look through the legal pack and as appropriate take legal advice on it. There may be matters affecting the property legally which are not apparent from an inspection of the property. The contract can also sometimes contain provision for additional payments to be made on completion. Often the contract will require the buyer to refund the cost of any searches supplied to the seller on completion but sometimes there are also

agent’s commissions or premiums to be paid. The buyer should always take a cheque book to the auction because if successful a 10% deposit is to be paid immediately. The buyer should obviously also have finance in place that can definitely be drawn down for the set completion date. It is always wise for a buyer to set a limit when bidding and stick to that. I have seen many occasions where buyers have become carried away and ended up paying much more than they originally intended. Bidding is very important. If you set a limit then you should try and enter your bid so that your limit will be reached when it is your bid. It is often wise to position oneself so that you can see the other bidders so that you can gauge their reactions and seriousness. Above all enjoy the experience. 20 New massage services to help active individuals get the most from their lives are now available locally. Sports massage therapist, Graham Spencer, has just opened for business in the Melton area. Graham says: “Whether you are an active sports person or someone with a busy physical job, sports massage can be really helpful in keeping you in good shape. It can relieve stress, aches and pains and help you to get the most from your physical performance. People think sports massage is just for sports people but I’ve worked with blacksmiths, gardeners and desk workers with great success.” Graham’s approach is to understand what his clients are looking to achieve, and then to tailor an individual massage programme

based on what’s right for them. Graham was first inspired to become a Sports massage therapist after he cycled the Coast to Coast for charity. Fortunately a massage therapist had been enlisted to help with sore shoulders and legs over the three challenging days and demonstrated to him how invaluable the service could be. Graham decided to train himself so that he could support others in their ventures too. As well as cycling Graham enjoys running, badminton, mountain biking, golf, yoga and gardening. He knows what it is like to want to stay healthy and active. Now qualified, Graham holds a VTCT Level 3 (Vocational Training Charitable Trust) in Sports Massage Therapy. He can travel to clients or arrange appointments at his Waltham studio. References from previous clients are available. For more information or to book an appointment contact Graham or see his website, details below.

26 As we come into the winter, we start to need more light in our homes both day and night. There seemed little new in the lighting market for many years, but this has all changed now and from energy saving and long life to remote control, the technology has come out of the dark ages. The most obvious change in lighting is the end of incandescent bulbs and the arrival of low energy lighting. While early CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs were pretty horrible and couldn't be dimmed, today's models are far nicer and can even be bought with remote controls to dim and brighten them. The big news though, is the rise of LED. Light-emitting diodes aren't just incredibly cheap to run; because they don't get as hot

as other bulbs, they are much more versatile. They're already a common sight in car headlamps, and you can replace most of your house's incandescent bulbs with LEDs for relatively little cash - including halogen downlighters, which were previously difficult and expensive to replace with LEDs. When you combine LEDs with sensors, things start getting interesting. For around ÂŁ12 you can get LED motion detectors, which light up stairs and other potential hazard areas and a LED in an external motionsensing security light will give you the same peace of mind as before, without the enormous energy drain.

27 As technology gets smaller and cheaper, it switches. Once again it isn't cheap - expect to pay around £39.99 for a light switch and also gets smarter. Wouldn't it be great if the same for a plug socket that you can use your lighting linked in to your wireless to control table lamps - but the technology network and could be controlled by your is interesting: you can combine phone? That's already Wemo with the “If This Then That” available: Philips' Hue web service. So, for example, you lightbulbs do just that, could add a motion detector to enabling you to change switch on the hall light when you both brightness and open the front door or get the light colours - so you might switch to activate at sunset each evening. use a gently brightening yellow glow to wake you in the morning, or point at a photo If you like the idea of motion sensors, light to get the lighting to match its colours. It'll sensors or timers for your lighting but would be a while before such technology is every rather not shell out for expensive day affordable though - a starter pack will smartphone-connected kit, you don't have currently set you back £179 for one to: a simple but effective motion and soundcontroller and three bulbs - but it's still quite sensing light switch will set you back less exciting. than £10, an electronic timer light switch will cost less than £10 and one with a built-in Another exciting idea is Wemo, Belkin's sensor will only cost a few pounds more. wireless technology for home automation. You can already buy Wemo-enabled plugs, The smartphone-compatible hardware may have the wow factor, but lower-tech options and now you can buy Wemo-enabled light won't give your wallet the "ow" factor.

31 Boilers account for around 55% of what you could spend a year on energy bills. Most boilers over 15 years old can be repaired to keep them working, but they will be less efficient than modern ones. The government is currently running some schemes to encourage consumers to upgrade or to even get a new boiler installed for free. You could receive up to £270 cashback for updating your boiler through The Green Deal Cashback Scheme. The scheme will give you money back if you make energy efficiency improvements in your home such as installing a new boiler, having loft or cavity wall insulation done, improving heating, draught proofing, double glazing and installing renewable energy such as solar panels. The Green Deal is available to households in England and Wales and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. You can apply even if you are renting privately or in social housing providing the landlord can pay for installations costs. You will need a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property which will tell what could be improved. Then agree to a quote with a Green Deal Provider. www.greendealorb.co.uk/consumersearch. Once you have agreed the quote, apply for the Green Deal Cashback Voucher at www.gdcashback.decc.gov.uk. Make sure you have the work completed before the voucher expires and you’ll receive your cashback within 30 days. Running alongside the Green Deal is the Governments Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) This has been put in place to help improve the ability of low income households to affordably reduce their energy bills. Here accredited installers have funds provided by the big energy companies to cover the cost of installing free boilers to those on low incomes. You must live in your own home or a privately rented one and be receiving certain state benefits to qualify. Also your existing boiler must be in need of upgrading. See

36 For years the Range Rover Sport has reigned supreme in the SUV market and now Land Rover is back at it again, with an all-new variety. Lighter, faster and more capable than ever before, the new model is no longer based on the Discovery, but now takes its underpinnings from the full-fat Rangie. Design DNA comes from the incredibly popular Evoque and mixed with the luxurious surroundings from the daddy of the line-up, it’s a potent combination and will be an absolute winner. Under the bonnet A choice of diesel and petrol units, plus there’s a diesel hybrid on the way later this year. The petrol station-crushing supercharged 5.0-litre V8 510bhp lump hits 60mph in five seconds dead and on to a top speed of 155mph. Ok, it emits 298g/km and returns 22.1mpg, but it’s so worth it. The SDV8 arrives later this year and in the meantime you can pick from the 3.0-litre V6 diesel in 258bhp and 292bhp guises – the more powerful of the two hits 60mph in 7.1 seconds.

What's the spec like? Palatial. It’s awash with fresh technology, from wade depth sensors to traffic sign recognition. A real innovation is the two extra seats in the boot; these are for occasional use only, but the electrically powered perches will come in handy with families. The front seats are adjustable 14 ways, heated and cooled and so too are those in the middle row. There’s a powered tailgate, cooled centre console that you can fit a bottle of champagne in and soft-close doors.

So instead of leaving it to a pension fund to decide what to invest in, you choose the products yourself, whether it be shares, bonds, commercial property or other things.

Teaching your child about money

A sure-fire of making your child comfortably off, is to teach them how to manage their money early on. Start as soon as they can toddle round the supermarket with you. Ask them to tell you the numbers on the price labels and then, later, run round finding the cheapest version of what you want to buy. Give them pocket money and set up a savings account for them, showing them how their money can grow over time. There are lots of ways to give your child the tools he or she needs to learn the basics of budgeting, spending and saving wisely. Go to pfeg.org for downloadable financial education guides that will help. Remember, it doesn’t matter how much money your child has later on, if they know how to live below their means and save for the future they will never be poor.

Weed attack!

Some weeds are pretty, some less so, but one thing they all have in common is that they are indeed growing where you don’t want them, and may be causing your garden plants to suffer. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, then read on. Off with their Heads Whatever the weed problem it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed, as most weeds are very efficient at building up their numbers by seed. So cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth. Stop Stowaways When you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying. Spaghetti roots Some weeds like couch grass, bindweed and nettles have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots in to little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process. Lawn Louts Lawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are difficult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool. It may be a slow process but will allow

by Pippa Greenwood you to dig them out individually. Deep Rooted Problems Some weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very difficult to kill. To make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run. Laying Carpet If large areas are weedy you could try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fluffy side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fibres, not synthetic, or else you’ll be left with it in the soil. For allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet. Time it Right Some weeds such as the purple flowered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out at this time of year, you’ll run in to trouble as the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be firmly attached and weed them out then. Hoe, hoe, hoe An old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re readily available at any decent garden centre and are a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly. Careful what you Compost Only compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any flowering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems. For more information visit www.pippagreenwood.com

56 Pattern, like colour, can be a wonderful addition to a home, providing character and vitality. Pattern can provide subtle interest through a few simple pieces featuring charming, understated designs. Or it can be the raison d’être of an entire room, a complex combination of patterned walls, rugs, fabrics and accessories. It’s easier to go down the simple route with pattern, and limit it to appearing in just one or two places. But combining a variety of patterns can be tremendously exciting and full of impact. Whatever items you’re putting together there are some guidelines that will help make the best of them. First, when mixing pattern with pattern or, indeed, pattern with plain, a really good colour match is important. This will hang the whole effect together. Stand back and assess which colours are most visible in your patterns, then aim to combine one main colour with two or three highlights. After working out a comfortable colour balance, think about scale. In bigger rooms you can afford to use very large-scale patterns for impact, while smaller rooms are generally better suited to medium- or smallscale patterns – unless you want to make a particular feature out of a tiny room by blasting it with a giant pattern. Second: When combining patterns aim to vary their scales – to avoid monotony – without going to extremes. Dramatic changes of scale tend to look strange. Don’t

forget that very small patterns are only really noticeable close up; from a distance they look like a plain colour. A tiny pattern can be used as a lovely addition to a scheme that calls for a decorative but subtle element. Third: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. As with scale, when using several types of pattern together, a variety of densities gives balance and interest. Fourth: design. Abstract, figurative, retro, traditional, modern – you name it, there’s something for everyone. Avoid an incongruous mix by limiting your pattern combinations to designs that originate from the same era or stylistic aesthetic. A delicate Georgian floral is unlikely to sit well next to a Seventies abstract geometric, for example, but will look great when combined with another pretty, spriggy floral of whatever origin. Remember that plains and stripes are brilliant at co-ordinating with more intricate patterns. And finally: cheat! If you love the idea of pattern but are really stuck, check out manufacturers’ wallpaper and fabric pattern books, which show you how to mix and match with ease. Success with pattern is simply a case of trial and error, putting different things together and changing them around until you’re totally happy with the results – a coherent, confident look that has great pattern panache.
