PERSONAL PROJECT EXHIBITION INVITITATION

ECOLOGY CLUB VISITOR TO JBS On March 6th, a visitor arrived at JBS with a box of wiggly worms and compost. Ann Love, a green-fingered lady who has written a book about gardening in the UAE and Oman, came to speak to Nurse Rachel and the members of the Ecology Club about starting a vegetable garden at JBS. Ms. Love showed us some worms, which are essential for decomposition, and how to take care of them so that they can be released into the soil. The Grade 7 students who came along with Isa from grade 4 enjoyed seeing the worms and helped to shred newsprint for a “worm farm, which, despite being rather bizarre, is really useful. Ms. Love also offered suggestions about composting in order to prepare the soil for planting vegetables and herbs. Overall it was an interesting experience- I learnt a lot about gardening and look forward to when JBS starts planting a vegetable garden this autumn. By Aatikah Mouti - Grade 11

GRADE 9 POETRY SLAM COMPETITION Last Thursday 7th March, all students in grade 9 took part in a Poetry Slam competition. Students had been working on their own poetry and practising their performances in class, preparing to go head- to - head with their grade 9 peers. Ms. Rogland led the session with some warm up exercises and then students enjoyed performances from Carlee, Yasmin & Sarah A, Rayan, Sarah F, Zeyad, Gheeda & Haya,Marika & Arianna,Ben, Mohammed,Rawdha and Hiraa. The slam was a success and students had so much fun that the English Department have already decided to start preparing for the next one!!

GRADE 9 POETRY SLAM COMPETITION Reality I bounce on my bed All thoughts clear my head I cover myself with the cover And start to dream of my lover Its all unicorns and rainbows I watched as the rivers of nutella flows Yellow, blue, purple and green Everything just seemed very clean Suddenly a stroke of lightning I feel my heart tightening Butterflies turned to crows What happened nobody knows That night I had the scariest dream Soo scary I couldn’t even scream Ghosts, spiders, thieves and death I have to try and catch my breath

Yasmin Farrington - 9S

See in a second or two Everything good seized to be true We went from sweet dream to scary nightmare As they say life is never fair I get that feeling where I’m about to fall I wake up sweaty and all I look at the time Everything around me seemed just fine I try to fall back asleep Next thing I hear is my alarm going BEEP I wake up and look at the mirror The last thing I saw was horror

My hair was like a lion I honestly wanna start cryin’ Not only did I have a terrible fantasy But I also have a terribly reality Sarah Abdul Jalil - 9S

GRADE 11 ECOLOGY FIELDTRIP The Grade 11 students are conducting fieldwork in the Grey Mangroves of Umm Al Quwaim. The first lab has them looking at the effect of abiotic factors (pH, soil salinity, temperature and amount of minerals) on biotic factors (number and type of plants, number and type of aquatic invertebrates) along an in retroussĂŠ belt transact from the mangroves to the land. They are also measuring the diameter of crabholes along the transect to see if there is correlation between the amount of crabs and the abiotic factors. Here are some interesting facts about the Grey Mangroves: -salinity concentration of soil is so high that plants ate adapted to excrete salts from their leaves -there is a low amount of oxygen in soil so they have modified roots growing out of the soil -fish use them to establish fish nurseries because they are well-protected from larger predators -80% of commercial fish that we way start in the mangroves -they protect the land from wave erosion and trap the extra sediment the waves bring in -they protect us from tsunamis

Aatikah excelled in her age category,15-18 years old, with her entry to the 'Seeking the Truth' competition, which inspired many writers from schools all over the region to create imaginative and thought provoking responses. Aatikah's winning entry has now been published by Oxford University Press in the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature 2013 book of winning entries. JBS is extremely proud of all of the students who took part in this competition.

“GIVE ME INDEPENDENCE” WORKSHOP The workshop was helpful as it prepared us for the future. It guided us towards the process of growing up and being independent. Being an adult is a challenge as it involves a great sense of responsibility. They helped us understand the concept of saving money and how to avoid being in debt. We acquired those skills by doing interesting and fun activities. I enjoyed learning something that would be useful to me in the future. By Sabrina Chelli - Grade 10J

On Wednesday the 6th of March a few students from grades 10 and 11 had the opportunity to take part in the ‘Give Me Independence’ workshop. A few finance professionals came to the school and spoke to us about budgeting, finance and other related things. The aim of the workshop was to teach us how we to manage our money in the future. I found the workshop fun as we got to do some activities and a quiz. There was a good video at the end to sum it all up. Our parents were with us, this made it better as we could see what they do with money and think about money, and in some cases even our parents learnt new things about managing money. I learnt more about what things cost realistically, and ways to make sure we save money whenever we can, if not always. By Kimberlee Brinkman - Grade 11
