Opalum Move - Degree work 2011

Start point This project explores the behaviour we have with sound and music in our homes. Internet and digital media have changed our way of using music products, but the products have not implemented the benefits from the new way of consuming music... yet. There are several reasons why I chose the home for my project. The main factor is that the home is a place where we have time and feel secure. That, in combination with stroke research that proves how music trains and stimulates the brain in a positive way, made my choice simple. I also identified a behavior, both in myself and other people, that you have a good music system in your living room but you can not use it when you are elsewhere in your home.

Findings I have had a human-centred design approach during the whole process: I analysed the behaviour and needs from the users in the home. One clear fact stands above the rest; people want to listen to music in all rooms at home. This together with my desire for innovation lead to a mobile speaker.

Collaboration partner

Opalum is a brand for the company Actiwave that have a patent on digital filter for sound. This makes Opalum a unique brand on the market. Their speakers do not have to obey the acoustic laws to the same extent as other speakers. Their speakers also include an amplifier and are wireless. This was perfect for me; I could focus almost entirely on the behaviour of people and the design for the user instead of following the acoustic rules to make the best out of them.

Form development For the development of my concept I initially sketched abstract shapes inspired by music. Then I developed the form with physical models to find an attractive shape that is made for mobile usage. At the same time, the shape expresses melody and music.

Result Do we need more than one speaker? Instead of having a whole system for each room, I created a mobile speaker you can use with all your multimedia products. The speaker is active, which means it has a built-in amplifier. The music is streamed to the speaker using the wireless DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) system, and these together create a wireless stereo system, all in a hand-held unit. In addition, you also have a remote control covered in touch-sensitive fabric so you have all your music at the tip of your finger. From this remote you can change volume, switch songs, change the source and much more. To power it all, the speaker is driven by a high capacity battery that charges through induction discretely in the dock. The shape of the speaker is reminiscent of an instrument, and will create a benchmark for what a mobile speaker can look like in the future.

Scenario To watch a short presentation movie for the project, please visit my vimeo account: http://vimeo.com/24323636

The consept is sold to Opalum for further development within the company. Hopfully the product will be launched during 2013

The remote can be detached

The speaker is held up by gecko imitating material

The music is streamed trough DLNA

Enjoy your music wherever you want

Twist - Competition finalist 2009

Brief Create a unique public bench and exhibit in V채ster책s over a summer. The shape is made so people will face eachother and are encouraged to speak more. The seating area leans for different seat heights and also so water will run off.

Result

My goal was to surprised people with a shape that they did not expect in a wooden bench. The bench was 3Dmodelled in Rhino and then milled at a wood workshop in V채ster책s.

Hot Team - Innovative shovel and pic 2010

Brief Briefe To minimize the dangerous physical strain that follows road construction. Focus is to improve the shovel and the wedge-point digging bar ergonomics without considering the heritage of the tools. Goal The goal was to prevent the injuries workers sustained after long-time use of hand-held tools. Many of the motions cause great pain in shoulders, back, elbows and wrists

Context The context of road construction contains a lot of stressful ovements and heavy cognitive input. With this in mind, the hand held-tools cannot be an obstacle, they should be a extension of their bodies..

Method - Hot Team The team members consist of a core and with other members that rotate between the teams. My final team was: Malin Andersson Arash Karimi Melker Molin Tor Hauksson Jesper Målsten Hanna Olausson John Vikström

Transparency All research, conclusions and concept development are put up on the walls at each of the teams’ offices. This means that all information is shared with the whole group.

Conclusions Our research confirmed the tatistics of overall working injuries within the industry. We also found out that it is the shovel that causes most injuries.

Concepts We made lots of working mock-ups from our concepts and tried them out with the user. Thereafter we evaluated them with different methods to ensure the best concept would become further developed.

shock absorbing and rotating handel The space created by the shape make it possible for digging under pipes

Shovel, Our solution provides excellent posture for the user while using the shovel. The shape itself works as a big shock absorber.

The frame works like a shock absober. Here is a render over the moment in the material during impact

Hollow Phone

Method

Inspiration My inspiration for this projects comes from other products that have played with hollowness to create a function advantage.

The goal of this project was to play with our expectations in products. A phone is usually a solid shape that feels heavy unless it’s very thin. But what if the shape itself was hollow? Can the phone possess a lightness?

Portfolio 2011 - Melker Molin, UmeĂĽ Institute of Design - Bachelor of Industrial Design

Result Hollow phone moves your - the viewer’s - mind away from the ordinary appearance of telephones at home. The light helps to indicate incoming calls, battery status etc.

Additional work

Laser Cutter This work was done in the laser cutter at school. To the left and below are form studies I made on my own to make a two dimensional shape 3D. To the right is a sun dial that I made during an art course with the theme Time and Contrast.

Chess Board This is a chess board I made for myself in the spring of 2010. I was inspired by simple chessboards I saw made from metal pipes. I wanted to try to make a really simple design for the chess pieces. I started with a cube, subtracting material in diffrent ways that seperate the pieces. The board itself also works as a storage compartment for the chess pieces.
