The Short List to Avoid Fragrance- It’s a trade secret, which means that companies are not required to disclose what’s in it—usually, there are dozens, if not hundreds of potentially toxic chemicals, including phthalates, which cause the fragrance to stick to your skin. Parabens- is indicated by any word that ends in paraben, like methylparaben, propylparaben, etc. Parabens are an endocrine disruptors. The endocrine system is incredibly complex and important: It’s responsible for regulating everything from our mood, to our reproductive processes, to our growth and development, to our sexual function and metabolism. Exposure to endocrine (or hormone disruptors) is particularly scary because they’re so potent in small doses, as they mimic the hormones that our bodies produce in small amounts every day. Endocrine disrupting chemicals can lead to reproductive problems, metabolic issues, cancer, birth defects, and other devastating disorders. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)-The surfactant Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) can cause skin irritation and allergies. The much bigger problem is that in the process of making it less harsh for the skin (ethoxylation), a carcinogenic byproduct emerges: 1,4-dioxane, which shows up on the label as SLES. It’s never listed on an ingredient label because it is a “contaminant,” but it’s often present where SLES appears. Formaldehyde-This is another that you’ll never actually see listed on the label: It’s also a carcinogen, and it is linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. It’s likely present wherequaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol) are listed on ingredient labels.” Phthalates-Abbreviated to DBP, DEHP, and DEP, these plasticizers make products more pliable—and make fragrances stick to skin. They are endocrine/hormone disruptors commonly used in nail products, and they hide in fragrance. While the FDA theoretically governs personal care products, and the EPA oversees chemicals in general (including those used in household cleaners), neither agency is resourced or empowered to demand safety data or require studies around long-term health impacts, it’s completely legal for companies to use known carcinogens. We can’t control everything, but the products that we bring into our homes and put on our bodies every single day is a good place to start

Benefits For Using EO's in Your Recipes Essential oils are delicious in our foods and beverages. Eo's are potent for years where as dried herbs have a short shelf life. Using oils saves you money, only tiny amounts are needed. Oils give you a variety of delightful aromas and flavors.

Quick Tips Use glass, metal or ceramic utensils and bowls for mixing, serving and storing foods containing essential oils. Always mix essential oils into another liquid, in a separate bowl, making certain it is evenly distributed. Microwaving food using eo's will cause them to lose potency. For maximum flavor, add eo's during the last steps of a recipe.

Measurement Guidelines *Citrus zest or juice measurement guidelines: The zest of 1 lemon, orange or tangerine = 10-15 drops of its companion essential oil. *Recipes that call for a tablespoon of spices can be replaced with 1 drop of the essential oil companion. *For recipes that include less than 1 teaspoon of a herb or spice, use the toothpick method. For a more subtle flavor or those smaller portions (less than a teaspoon) remove the inserted plastic dripping cap off the bottle of essential oil and dip a tooth pick into it, then swirl the essential oil dipped tooth pick in your food. The toothpick method works well for warmer Eo's like cinnamon bark, clove, ginger, basil, marjoram, oregano, thyme, black pepper, dill, rosemary, sage, coriander and nutmeg oil they are much stronger thAn their companion spices. *Using essential oils in baking and candy making: essential oils are about 3 to 4 times stronger than alcohol-based extract flavorings. To substitute Eo's for an extract, start by using Âź teaspoon (15 drops) of an essential oil in place of 1 teaspoon of an extract. Some essential oils such as clove and peppermint are particularly potent. We recommend starting with less and adding more to taste (toothpick method).
