HISTORY OF DANCE-POP

THE GENRE DANCE-POP ORIGINATES ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE 1980S. THIS IS THE ERA IN WHICH DISCO STARTED TO BECOME LESS POPULAR AND WAS MODERNISED AND EVOLVED INTO MUSIC WITH NAMES SUCH AS POST-DISCO AND DANCE MUSIC. AS DISCO VANISHED COMPLETELY, POST-DISCO MUSIC WAS GENERALLY VERY ELECTRONIC WITH THE USE OF SYNTHESIZERS AND OFTEN DJ DRIVEN, THIS WAS TO MAKE IT MORE APPEALING TO CLUBS. DANCE-POP CAME TO SHOW IN THE 1980S AS A VERY UP TEMPO AND VOCAL PIECE OF MUSIC WITH EXTREMELY STRONG BEATS. KYLIE MINOGUE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF EARLY DANCE-POP AS SHE MORE OR LESS CREATED DANCE-POP INTO THE MAINSTREAM GENRE IT IS TODAY. IN THE 2000S ARTISTS SUCH AS BRITNEY SPEARS, CHRISTINA AGUILERA, MADONNA AND MORE WERE STILL SINGING SONGS IN THE GENRE OF THIS STYLE WITH SOME INFLUENCES TO R&B IN THE LATE 2000S, ARTISTS SUCH AS RIHANNA, LADY GAGA AND KESHA BEGAN TO BE IN THE LIME LIGHT AND SHINE BRIGHT WITH A MORE MODERNISED DANCEPOP GENRE OF MUSIC, WITH HINTS OF SYNTHPOP. NOW IN THE 2010S, ARTISTS SUCH AS USHER, ARIANA GRANDE, AND TAYLOR SWIFT CONTINUE TO MARK THE DANCE-POP GENRE, PROVING IT IS A VERY DIVERSE GENRE. AS LONG AS A SONG HAS A FAST TEMPO, VOCALS, AS WELL AS A STRONG BEAT, IT WILL BE CLASSED AS A DANCE-POP SONG.

Now, the big hair and smoky makeup is still prevalent in today’s dance pop genre, along with the ‘out-there’ clothes which sort of become a fashion statement for the fans of this genre today.

• It is argued that Madonna was the start of the style of the dance pop genre. In all public appearances she would wear her black miniskirt exposing her stomach, mesh tops with her underwear visible through, stiletto heels, rubber bracelets, and the most huge, teased hair you will ever see. All along with heavy, smoky makeup.
