Artist Statment As a Cuban who has recently immigrated in the United States, art uncovered a new side of me that became a major part of my life. My interdisciplinary art practice covers a broad range of topics around the overall themes of memory, time, and sense of place. My pieces revolve around humans, by either physically exploring the human body or referring to their behaviors, feelings, and emotions. Life experiences and observations of the world as a Cuban immigrant inevitably feed into my art making. My collectivistic upbringing developed a strong sense of connection with my family and my roots, which allowed me to overcome the burdensome distance that separates us. This body of work aims to illustrate what it’s really like to live in Cuba. I wanted to capture a part of Cuba that is more common to the Cubans living there, than to tourists who are usually shown the coastal side of the island. On August 2019, I went to visit my family, and while I was traveling from town to town, I photographed people and places as we were passing by. These images were taken in Sancti Spíritus, Fomento, Guayos, and Cabaiguán.

Texto Argumentativo Luego de inmigrar a los Estados Unidos desde mi tierra natal, Cuba, el arte se ha convertido en una parte irremplazable de mi vida. Mi práctica artística interdisciplinaria abarca una amplia gama de temas acerca de la memoria, el tiempo y el sentido del lugar. Mis obras se enfocan en lo humano, ya sea explorando físicamente el cuerpo humano o refiriéndose a los comportamientos, sentimientos y emociones. El hecho de ser una inmigrante residiendo en los Estados Unidos ha influido recientemente mi percepción del mundo y mi arte en sí. El entorno colectivista en el que crecí ha fortalecido mi conexión familiar y mis raíces, lo cual me ha permitido superar la enorme distancia que nos separa. Este proyecto tiene como objetivo ilustrar la realidad en la que se vive en Cuba. Mediante una serie de fotografías capto ese lado que es más común para los cubanos que viven en la isla que para los turistas, a los que generalmente se les muestra el lado hermoso y “exótico”. En agosto del 2019 pude visitar a mi familia y mientras viajaba de pueblo en pueblo, fotografié personas y lugares en el camino. Estas fotografías fueron tomadas en Sancti Spíritus, Fomento, Guayos y Cabaiguán.

About the Artist Melissa González López is a Cuban artist who immigrated to the United States in 2015 and has been living in Tallahassee since then. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a second major in Psychology at Florida State University. In her junior year, she studied abroad at Universitat Politècnica de València in Valencia, Spain as an exchange student.

Acerca de la Artista Melissa González López es una artista Cubana e inmigrante en los Estados Unidos desde el 2015. Vive y trabaja en Tallahassee, Florida. Cursa un grado en Bellas Artes y otro en Psicología en Florida State University. Durante su tercer curso, Melissa estudió un semestre en la Universitat Politècnica de València, Valencia, España como estudiante de intercambio.
