Dr. Cool Tech Reveals Hot Gadgets For Holidays Dec 3, 2009 Three weeks from Friday, the Christmas shopping season will be all over and even if you haven't started, there's a good chance you'll be buying some high-tech gifts. One of the hottest items this year is a new take on a classic. With a rechargeable battery and flashing touch screen, it's not your classic Rubik's cube. "All of your movements you would do with your Rubik's cube, you do with your finger, just swiping it back and forth," says Dr. Cool Tech Dave King, a home shopping guru. "And what's neat about it because it's a touch screen, none of these [panels] are active. The accelerometer makes the top one active, so you switch it now this one's active." King says the new cube is a high-tech twist on the 35-year-old puzzle. It's $150, but it comes with a brain. "Let's say you have a problem, need a little hint - press the hint button and it will tell you what your next move is," he said. But what if your problem in life is direction? We all know GPS units are hot items but so is the iPhone. Tom Tom offers a kit that marries the two for $99, AT&T does it for $10 a month and now for $70, Magellan is in the mix. "This one also goes in 3D, so you can actually see the buildings on your left and right as you go through downtown Pittsburgh as we happen to be here and also if you want to, you can press here if you want to find a cup of coffee ... just press the nearest coffee right there," King explained. But the holidays are all about memories and digital cameras have always been hot sellers. But the Samsung Dual View TL225 offers 12.1 megapixels, a large screen and it takes pictures on its own. "So smile recognition, it has facial recognition - it has smart facial recognition so it will recognize your face, my face, other faces - specifically if you want to train it to do just that," King said. It starts at $269 although similar quality ones without dual screens can go for half of that. But no matter what you buy, the cost of high tech gifts is dropping each season. "And will continue to do so but it gets even better, so that's my recommendation for this holiday season," King said.
