The Heights, Pimpana Civil Engineering The Heights is a master planned residential community. It has over 1000 homes and parklands located on a 105ha site in northern Gold Coast. Meinhardt has been involved with conceptual earthworks modelling to detailed bulk earthworks, roadworks and services design and documentation. The existing site was steeply graded with a 60m level increase and significant drainage paths across the site. Bulk earthworks were undertaken in a staged construction to create level building sites. Weathered rock has required the use of ripping, and drill and blast operations, with multiple blasting events of 5,000 to 10,000 cubic metres required. Specialist geotechnical controls for rockfill placement and compaction were part of Level One earthworks testing and compliance. Erosion and sediment controls have been implemented across the site by utilising future stormwater bioretention and detention devices as temporary sediment basins during construction.

Hervey Bay Aged Care, Hervey Bay Structural, civil and engineering Hervey Bay Aged Care is a 145bed aged care complex in Hervey Bay, Queensland. The development included 3 internal courtyards with cantilever balconies, a feature skylight over a central dining area, a canopy covering the main entry and drop off area, a bowling green, sports bar, theatre, function and training rooms, barbeque areas, pergolas and gazebos. Plant platforms were recessed into the roof, while still being readily accessible from an in-roof walkway. The tiedown of the roof structure was meticulously designed for high wind conditions, while both services and structure considered the critical fire compartmentation of the building.

BAC ITB Northern Concourse Expansion Project, Brisbane Building Services Engineering, Aviation Services This development is a $100M expansion of the International Terminal Building (ITB) and apron to provide increased aircraft docking and parking space, as well as improved passenger experience and processing efficiency to cater for future growth. The expansion added 11,000m2 across three levels, two fixed links and four aerobridges. It included the provision for future expansion of the Emirates Lounge through a 2-storey fixed link. The expansion has increased efficiency for both arrivals and departures, adding capacity for airlines to increase scheduled services.

PFAS Management at Airport and Fire-Fighting Sites Site assessment, waste categorisation, risk assessment and management The Environment team worked closely with Australian key clients to complete multiple site assessments, waste categorisation, risk assessment and management in accordance with evolving guidance for soils, surface water and groundwater impacted by PFAS from historical airport and firefighting activities. We have provided clients with detailed advice on the appropriate management, mitigation and remediation of PFAS impacted media at these sites. We generated site specific CSMs, designed permanent/temporary soil repositories, provided EMPs for both ongoing site use and construction activities. These works have helped our clients manage PFAS risk in an appropriate and proportionate manner while determining the value of the land previously affected by PFAS impacts.

Environmental Audit Overlay Assessment, Victoria Environmental auditing The Environment team provided initial advisory services followed by completion of PSI and DSI assessments for a private residential site. This was subject to an EAO in the planning scheme, due to its proximity to a former industrial site. We produced a remediation plan and specification for the removal of contaminated soil and supervised validation works on completion of the investigations. Working closely with the client, the Environmental Auditor and incorporating other adjacent client-owned properties in the Audit, we minimised the duration of the Audit process and provided the client with an economical and efficient outcome.

Premier Tower, Melbourne Building Services Engineering In the heart of Melbourne, Premier Tower – inspired by Beyonce’s Ghost music clip – blurs the boundary between art & design.

Irving Street Brewery, Sydney Structural, Civil and Facade Engineering Meinhardt was appointed to convert this heritage-listed brewery into a boutique hotel. The regeneration involved restoring a 62m heritage-listed chimney that will be used as the exhaust flue for the new tri-generation plant. We designed an efficient clear-span portal frame solution and limited deflections to reduce cracking risks with extensive computer modelling of all loading situations. The design complements the heritage steel hoppers and concrete grain silos. The space reactivates the Brewery Buildings for the new uses, maximises internal spaces and reinvigorates existing heritage items.

KIOSC Swinburne University, Melbourne Civil & Structural Engineering, ESD Two storey training hub centre/ facility, including labs, for Swinburne University. Its design incorporates the concept of sustainable building practice, which in itself will facilitate students learning and understanding of environmental sustainability. The main feature of the building is the front facade and roof. The first structural design challenge was to design the thin sun blades of no more than 75mm structural thickness throughout the front north facade. These blades will then taper to visually create a thin line at the edge of the roof. Furthermore, the brief also called for no visual obstructions (i.e.. columns) from behind the glass facade.

Queens Square Law Courts, Sydney Electrical, Hydraulic, Communications & Fire Engineering, Security, Specialist Lighting The Queens Square Law Courts refurbishment project has involved the improvement of the building’s services, as well as the quality, amenity and efficiency of the internal spaces in the 27-storey tower. The objective has been to provide a solid foundation on which a proper maintenance program can be implemented to effectively prolong the building’s life span for the next 30 years. The result showcases a suite of high-efficiency building features, all presented within a design framework of institutional dignity and legal authority.

University of Notre Dame Medical School, Sydney Structural engineering The University of Notre Dame built their Medical School within the existing Sacred Heart Church and ancillary buildings. The Church and School Building date back to the early 1900’s, and the Presbytery was built in 1970. Meinhardt undertook the structural engineering to cut, lift and move a 92T mosaic wall. Months of careful planning were critical to preserve the heritage icon, comprising of some 750,000 tiles. In addition to primary lifting steelwork, we devised a secondary steelwork bracing frame grouted tight to the walls and the floor slab, to avoid twisting or cracking of the arched wall. The internal and external steelwork were bolted together through the concrete wall, creating a lifted framework.
