Limb Technology Some people don’t know or remember how it feels to wiggle their fingers, being able to feel the fresh water flowing onto their toes. Some don’t know how it feels like holding hands, or even know what it’s like to have a ring on your finger because they don’t have any fingers. There are nearly 2 million people limbless; but this is only in America, and the number worldwide is expected to double by 2050. 185,000 people have an amputation each year. This is a huge amount of the world, limbless. Dr. Charles Goldfarb, a surgeon at St. Louis Children’s Hospital says: “A teenager wants to be like any other teenager.”This is special because of how he helps children, and how he made a prosthetic 3D printed arm for one of his patients. Technology can be life-changing. Technology is a remarkable development and should be open to everyone with disabilities, not just the rich people. People with disabilities should be guided by technology that helps them reach things they couldn’t accomplish before. The text “With a new arm, a young war victim finds her artistic talent” from Newsela, the text says that a girl from Afghanistan was playing with her brother when they came across a ‘rock’, what actually was a bomb, and it exploded. It killed the girl’s brother, lost an eye, most of one of her arms, and has scars all over her. This is significant because technology has given her a new arm, and with that arm, she now can paint. In fact, she has found her artistic talent, like the title says. Limb technology should be open and in use for everybody who needs it. Some people are helpless, without legs, or without arms, and that’s why they need limb technology. Everybody limbless needs it and needs treatment like what happened to Shah Bibi, a girl, according to Newsela who was near a bomb when it blew up and lost several parts of her body with scratches and bruises. She was brought to America, and treated there for free, with her new arm. It is amazing how they just picked her up and helped her, even though her country was fighting the US, and they have mercy. They helped her for free, and later she would go back to her family, and then go back for treatment of her scars and a new eye! Certain technology should be used for people without limbs, to help, and let the limbless be able to enjoy the freedom of being able to go out and have fun. Some people can’t go for a walk in the park without sitting in a wheelchair. Some people don’t know the feeling when you go for a run or climb a tree. Some people are crippled, and can’t walk, or they can’t wave their hand at someone familiar. Some can’t play the violin, the piano, and other instruments. I find that terrible! Just imagine sitting in a chair all day, doing nothing. A minute would seem like an hour. They have limited options to choose, not like the ‘normal’ people. According to Newsela, a girl called Isabella Nicola wanted to play the violin. Now she can, because of the technology. She had no hand, but now she does, and it’s pink and glittery, and she’s completely
in love with it! Technology grows every day. Someday, people without legs will be able to walk, and climb trees. Someday, they will be able to run and play the piano. The point is that some technology should be used for helping limbless people, and let them enjoy a normal life. All in all, all people that are limbless should be helped with technology. Technology should help them achieve things they couldn’t complete before and should be open for everybody who needs it. Technology should be helpful for the limbless, and let them be able to enjoy it. What if you were that person? Or those people? Just imagine the world, everybody enjoying themselves, no people suffering from limb loss, being healthy and happy, children who are able to climb trees, or people who are able to hold hands; compared to now: crying, bleeding, not having the wonderful privilege of walking, and that needs to change.
