That’s me, the tan one. This was taken May 2011, at my sister’s high school graduation.

June rolled around and I began my job as a manager and lifeguard at

A month passed by and I began having an incredible thirst. I drank

began getting weak and spent alot of time in bed. I couldn’t walk up stairs without being winded and occasionally blacking out for a few seconds. The doctor said that it may just be a bug, so blood tests were taken and the wait began.

The first diagnosis was Water Intoxication or hyponatremia. The overwatering of my body was washing away all of my sodium. I was limited to a small amount of water a day and forced to drink electrolytes then retested soon after.

Amidst all of this I made two visits to the ER for dehydration, tachycardia, and 8 pounds lost over night. This is where I did

15 doctor’s appointments, I was handed over to an endocrinologist.

After retelling the reason for my rediculously dark skin the doctor looked at me and said to show him an area of skin where the “sun didn’t shine,” it was equally dark. “You have what Kennedy had”

“You have what Kennedy had”

he said. This scared me because I had no clue what that meant I mean what didn’t Kennedy have.

I had Addison’s Disease.

BY DEFINITION. Addison’s Disease is a rare autoimmune disease in which the adrenal glands do not work properly or stop working altogether. The adrenal glands produce many hormones, including cortisol, which helps the body maintain heart function, blood pressure control, and blood glucose control.

1 The pituitary gland sends alerts to

the adrenal glands to make cortisol.

Cortisol controls stress on the body

2 As the cortisol rises and heals the body, the alerts from the pituitary gland lower.

3 People with Addison’s disease get

these alerts but the adrenal glands do not respond.

SYMPTOMS. Addison’s disease symptoms usually develop slowly, often over several months & may include:

Muscle weakness and fatigue Weight loss and decreased appetite Darkening of your skin

Acute adrenal failure / Addisonian Crisis. Sometimes the signs and symptoms may appear suddenly, these symptoms include:

Low blood pressure, even fainting Salt craving Low blood sugar Nausea, vomiting Muscle or joint pains Irritability Depression

Pain in your lower back, abdomen or legs Severe vomiting and diarrhea Dehydration Low blood pressure Loss of consciousness High potassium

Even after diagnosed, an Addisonian Crisis is a threat. Something as simple as consistently taken medicine can overt these complications. But an Addisonian must be prepared in the event that something unexpected happens such as a car accident/ sport injury .
