MEGA Roadmap in 2019 List of key developments, contributions, projects, events, and achievements of MEGA in 2019.

Dear Friend, We, the team of the organisation Moldovan Environmental Governance Academy, or simply MEGA, are happy that you have shown interest in the sixth edition of the MEGA Annual Report and all our experiences, developments, contributions, projects, events, and accomplishments described in it. The year 2019 marked the sixth year of the existence and “evolution” of MEGA. It brought us multiple new opportunities to provide our Gamified Education service, a series of new initiatives about nature conservation and social entrepreneurship that we had launched, a prestigious environmental award that we had received at both national and global level, and many new partners, who had supported us throughout the year. Perhaps you, dear Friend, is also one of them. With regard to the MEGA’s Gamified Education service, we were glad to deliver it to our customers in Moldova and Tajikistan by organizing training programmes and courses lasting one or several days. The topics of our trainings included integration of ecosystem services into development planning, eco-friendly manufacturing via 3D printing, project management, and autodidact learning. In relation to new initiatives, in 2019, we joined two of our partners, EcoVisio and Generator Hub, and together launched the Green Drinks Chisinau networking events and the GreenTech Rangers preacceleration programme for environment-and-sustainability-focused startups. By the end of the year, we also succeeded in attracting significant financial support to continue both initiatives in 2020. Finally yet importantly, the year 2019 brought us recognition for all the efforts we had invested into the MEGA Game platform and all the outcomes and positive impact our product had created for society and the natural environment over five years, from 2015 to 2019. That recognition came in the form of the Energy Globe National and World Award, which we had received in Moldova and Finland. In total, 2019 turned out to be quite a successful experience for MEGA. It definitely contributed to fulfilling our mission of connecting people for a sustainable future. Now, we invite you to explore that experience in more details on the pages of the present Report. We hope that what you would see and read here will inspire and convince you to join our cause and to MAKE IT MEGA TOGETHER!

With great respect and gratitude, The MEGA Team www.megageneration.com hello@megageneration.com www.fb.com/megamoldova

About MEGA

What is

MEGA (the complete name: Moldovan Environmental Governance Academy) is a

MEGA?

experimenting with innovative projects and solutions to the most pressing

social entrepreneurial organisation working as a collaborative platform for

environmental and social issues in the world. Founded in 2013 by a team of four young activists and entrepreneurs, MEGA has evolved over the past six years into an experienced, collaborative, and innovative player within the community of environment-and-sustainability-oriented organisations in Moldova and beyond.

In its social business activity, MEGA specializes on the approach and technology of gamification in nature conservation and sustainable development. Specifically, it delivers services of project gamification, serious game development, and gamified education with environmental and social value.

The purpose of MEGA is to change how nature conservation and sustainable development are done these days. Instead of working with symptoms of environmental and social issues (planting trees, cleaning up waste dumps, etc., which we also do as part of various MEGA projects), we target the roots of these issues and mobilize resources (ideas, solutions, talents, etc.) needed for resolving them. In such way, we serve as collaboration-enabling platform with a set of modern information technologies (gamification, e-learning, and other) necessary for systemic changes in environment protection and sustainable development.

MEGA

MEGA Vision A sustainable future, where every person and organisation contributes to nature conservation and sustainable development through creation of positive environmental and social impact in a collaborative, innovative, enjoyable, and fun way anywhere in the world.

MEGA Game: The Game with Impact had been the core product of MEGA for four

The Game with Impact

years, from 2015 until 2019. It represented the organisation’s most ambitious,

gamification with activities on nature conservation and sustainable development. MEGA Game was a map-based project management platform with elements of gamification and e-learning designed specifically for environmental organisations and individual environmentalists. The platform helped them to connect with each other and to manage environmental projects and fieldwork in a collaborative, fun, engaging, and motivating way within a global community. In 2019, after supporting 17 environmental organisations, hosting approximately 30 environmental projects, educating and engaging over 150 young people into those projects, and winning a series of awards, MEGA Game was put on hold. The decision to do it was based upon the need to not only introduce new features into MEGA Game, but also redesign the entire user interface and gamification mechanics of the platform. In turn, that need had arisen from the new purpose and value of our product: instead of just helping organisations manage their environmental projects, the new platform would educate and support its users in transforming those projects into sustainable social ventures. The new version of the MEGA Game platform is going to be developed and launched in 2020. Please follow the MEGA Blog and our social media pages to be the first one to gain access to our upgraded product when it becomes available.

“Edinet – Economic Growth Pole in the North Region of Moldova is a project implemented by our new Moldovan partner Industrial Park Edinet and its Edinet Business Hub with the aim to support economic growth and business development in the Northern region of the Republic of Moldova. Within this project, we delivered a short training course about environmentally friendly manufacturing with the use of 3D design and 3D printing technology. Specifically, we trained young entrepreneurs and residents of Edinet Business Hub on how to develop prototypes, Minimum Viable Products, and components of final products for their businesses in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner by using 3D design applications and 3D printers. Our participants were then able to apply their new knowledge and skills in practice and to print their first designs with a FlashForge Guider II 3D printer installed in Edinet Business Hub. As an outcome of the training, 15 young people from Edinet are now able to use 3D printing for prototyping and product development in an eco-friendly way.

ClimateLaunchpad is the world’s largest competition of green business ideas that address the issue of climate change. An initiative of EIT Climate-KIC, this competition is organized in two stages: firstly, National Finals take place in participating countries, and then the Global Final is held in one of these states. After winning the National Finals in Moldova with our MEGA Game back in 2015, we once again joined ClimateLaunchpad Moldova in 2019. This time, however, we assumed the role of its co-organizers together with EcoVisio and Generator Hub. In this consortium, we organized the fifth edition of the competition, including its Bootcamp, coaching sessions, and the National Finals. Moreover, we supported two national winners in their participation at the Global Final in Amsterdam and

“Forest Ecosystem Services:

Management” is an e-learning course on the topic of forests, economic valuation of their ecosystem services, and approaches to conservation and sustainable management of forest ecosystems and biodiversity within them. The course is comprised of ten video trainings and a manual created in 2018 as outcomes of our research-and-educational project “The Codru Quest II: A New Hope”. In 2019, we reviewed and updated five of the ten video trainings of the Forest Ecosystem Services course. Those review and update were necessary to align the information and knowledge conveyed via the video trainings with the previously revised content of the course manual. We also needed to reshoot a number of scenes from the trainings in summer and early autumn, so that the forest background in them looked more lively and suitable for the training narrative. The updated video trainings are now available on the course webpage, which was viewed more than 170 times by over 90 new visitors from 10 countries in 2019.

Partners

Once again, in 2019, we succeeded with our ambitious experiments, valuable services, impact-creating projects, and interesting events because of the great support provided to us by an ever-growing community of MEGA Partners and Friends. Many of them had been with MEGA throughout the last couple of years and remained faithful and supportive to us in 2019 as well. Others joined our cause and lent a helpful hand to us only recently. Nevertheless, all of MEGA Partners and Friends, both already existing and new ones, significantly helped our organisation and projects to create important value and positive change for civil society, social and environmental entrepreneurship, and the natural environment in Moldova and beyond. With their kind assistance, MEGA has moved further in achieving its vision and in fulfilling its mission of connecting people for a sustainable future. Shown below are the organisations, companies, institutions, agencies, and foundations, to whom we are most grateful for all the valuable support provided to us and for all the great work done together with us in 2019.

We also extend our gratitude to many wonderful people, who had contributed to the growth of MEGA in 2019 as our colleagues, coaches, mentors, volunteers, participants, supporters, and simply great and reliable friends!

26

Finance

27

The year 2019 turned out to be quite successful for MEGA in terms of its financial situation and fundraising. Although the organisation still relies on grants, sponsorships, and our own investments to continue to grow, in 2019, we nevertheless generated about 358 EUR in revenue with an additional sum of 313 EUR yet to come. The first payment already received was for delivering our Gamified Education service to Industrial Park Edinet and its Edinet Business Hub within their project “Edinet – Economic Growth Pole in the North Region of Moldova”. The second sum will be paid for similar MEGA service already provided to experimentQ within its project Autodidact. In 2019, we also attracted the largest grant support in the MEGA history so far. The grant of 41 562 USD, or 37 531 EUR, came from the Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the GEF and UNDP to support GreenTech Rangers in 2019 and 2020. The first instalment of 20 781 USD, or 18 766 EUR, has already been paid to the MEGA account.
