Dear Friends, In the year 2016 we, the MEGA Team, celebrated 3 years since the foundation of the Moldovan Environmental Governance Academy (MEGA). These were the 3 years full of focused commitment, passionate teamwork, amazing adventures together with many lessons learnt, life-changing journeys in different countries of the world, as well as challenges that were overcome, results that were achieved, awards that were received, and environmental and social positive impact that was created in our home country Moldova and beyond. Of all the 3 years the last one, 2016, was the richest in activities, results, and impact. We significantly advanced the development of our gamification platform, MEGA Game: The Game with Impact, by adding new exciting features to it. Now the user experience of MEGA Game can be adapted to any project. We organized the second edition of our annual competition MEGA Impact Championship and as part of it conducted the first phase of the Codru Quest - the unique research on economic valuation of ecosystem services. We continued the development of games on the topic of conflict resolution and peace building within the “Operation P.E.A.C.E.” project from last year. This time we organized a game development hackathon, where its participants released on-line versions of these games now accessible for teachers and students to play in. We took on the challenge of organizing Hai Moldova, the campaign of cleaning up our home country in one day. In 2016 we focused on the capital city Chisinau to start with. As part of it we also realized the first ever Ecohackathon in Moldova - a competition of innovative ideas for addressing various environmental issues in Chisinau. All these projects and activities were done by enjoying the challenges, teamwork, and ultimately successes together as the MEGA Team. Certainly, we could not do and achieve all this without the kind support of our MEGA Partners and Friends, as well as volunteers and members of local communities, who were inspired by our vision, mission, and goals, and believed in them. Together we contributed to the realization of a good number of “green dreams” and growth of the community of “Green Agents” ready to lead their own projects and organisations. Now we invite you to explore the following pages of the MEGA Annual Report for 2016. We hope that our actions, their results, and impact will inspire you to contribute to protection of the environment as well. We also hope that you will join us next year to move further in realizing the vision of a sustainable world and MAKING IT MEGA TOGETHER!

With great respect and gratitude, The MEGA Team hello@megageneration.com www.megageneration.com 4

About MEGA

Why MEGA?

MEGA (the complete name: Moldovan Environmental Governance Academy) is the social entrepreneurial organization focused on delivering services of gamification, game development, gamified trainings, and e-learning with environmental and social value. Since its establishment in November 2013 the organization, as well as its MEGA Team, have evolved from the “seed” of an idea and vision into a strong, experienced, collaborative, and important player in the community of environment-oriented organizations in Moldova and abroad.

MEGA represents an innovative solution for addressing the modern world’s most pressing social and environmental issues, including inefficient natural resource management, environmental pollution with greenhouse gas emissions and waste toxins, loss of biodiversity, climate change, etc. We tackle these issues through community participation and collaborative environmental governance.

The purpose of MEGA is to create an environmentally sustainable world on the basis of such positive and motivating feelings as fun, enjoyment, and optimism about the future. To achieve this we combine psychology + technology + ecology in an innovative way and use their combined advantages. More specifically, we apply gamification, open-source eco-innovations, and citizen science for granting communities the “power” to create the clean, green, and environmentally prosperous world they dream of with their own hands and minds.

6

MEGA

MEGA Vision A sustainable world, where every person lives an eco-friendly life, has open access to practical learning opportunities, constructs own open-source eco-innovations, and thus contributes to sustainable development and creation of positive social and environmental impact in a collaborative, enjoyable, and fun way anywhere in the world.

Vision, Mission, and

MEGA Mission Make people’s green dreams* come true. *Under “green dreams” we understand sustainable solutions, eco-innovations, and environmental projects / initiatives that improve both the social well-being of communities and the quality of the environment they live in.

MEGA Values PASSION: We exist to serve the nature and people; COOPERATION: We believe in the power of communities; SUSTAINABILITY: We act sustainably in everything we do; EXCELLENCE: We strive for excellence in all our endeavours; FUN: We do serious work in a fun way; LEADERSHIP: We lead by example; TEAMWORK: We make it MEGA TOGETHER!

Playing for Impact

Just like a tree uses its leaves to “communicate with the external environment, receive sunlight and transform it into its internal energy, as well as take carbon dioxide and give back oxygen for other organisms to breathe, so does MEGA rely on its MEGA Game: The Game with Impact to communicate with young environmentalists and sustainability-interested economic agents, receive valuable environmental data and inputs from them, and give back important learning, impact-creating challenges, and rewards for eco-friendly actions and behaviour. MEGA Game: The Game with Impact is a unique gamification* system, where creating positive impact becomes a habit. It consists of web platform and smartphone application that nurture environmentally friendly habits and socially valuable behavior in individuals, called Green Agents, and companies and organizations, called Mission Providers. The system does so by combining practices of psychology, technology, and ecology that are directed towards elearning, collaboration, and real-world positive change. In such way MEGA Game connects the on-line world with its accessibility and technological innovations to the real one with its challenges and opportunities for playing and at the same time creating meaningful environmental and social impact. MEGA Game can be accessed at www.megageneration.com.

*Gamification – the practice of applying game tools, mechanics, principles, and mindset to a nongame context, such as environmental protection and management in the case of MEGA Game.

MEGA Impact

MEGA Impact Championship is the annual national initiative of MEGA that is aimed at stimulating cooperation among organizations and companies around identifying and resolving social / environmental issues in different places in a specific country. Innovation of this initiative is the application of gamification and

focused on the topic of biodiversity conservation. It consisted of three levels full of trainings on ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation, visits to the

forest, provocative missions and challenges there, etc. The Semi-finals of the Championship represented a reforestation campaign organized together with Seed It Forward and Eco-village Moldova, where its participants had planted the foundation of a new community forest. The Finals included biodiversity research missions and concluded with the celebration of the 3 MEGA Years Anniversary.

The Codru Quest is a scientific research initiative, which emerged from MEGA Impact Championship. It is now a stand-alone study on economic valuation of ecosystem services in the Codru Nature Reserve and the Codru forest in Moldova. The primary goal of the study for 2016 – 2017 is to estimate and present the economic value of ecosystem services and biodiversity in the Codru Nature Reserve and forest. This value is then going be used for further research,

The Codru Quest

awareness raising about benefits of the forest and value of endangered species of flora and fauna there, reforestation and nature conservation activities, and the proposal for market-based sustainable management of the natural resources and biodiversity in this area. The project is also designed to experiment with the use of gamification and IT tools for conducting economic valuation surveys. Based on the results of these experiments we intend to design and propose a solution on how to increase response rates, as well as quality of data obtained from such surveys. The Codru Quest study is structured into three phases. In 2016 the first phase was completed, where the initial design of the economic valuation survey was tested.
