Dal Vaticano, 17 agosto 2015 A Sua Eccellenza Reverendissima Mons. FRANCESCO LAMBIASI Vescovo di Rimini Eccellenza Reverendissima, a nome del Santo Padre Francesco e mio personale, rivolgo un cordiale saluto a Lei, agli organizzatori e ai partecipanti al XXXVI Meeting per l’amicizia fra i popoli.

La suggestiva e poetica espressione scelta come tema di quest’anno - “Di che è mancanza questa mancanza, cuore, che a un tratto ne sei pieno?” (Mario Luzi) - pone l’accento sul “cuore” che è in ciascuno di noi, e che sant’Agostino ha descritto come “cuore inquieto”, che mai si accontenta e ricerca qualcosa all’altezza della sua attesa. È una ricerca che si esprime in domande sul significato della vita e della morte, sull’amore, sul lavoro, sulla giustizia e sulla felicità. Ma per essere degni di trovare una risposta occorre considerare in modo serio la propria umanità, coltivando sempre questa sana inquietudine. In tale impegno - ci dice Papa Francesco - «è possibile ricorrere semplicemente a qualche esperienza umana frequente, come la gioia di un nuovo incontro, le delusioni, la paura della solitudine, la compassione per il dolore altrui, l’insicurezza davanti al futuro, la preoccupazione per una persona cara» (Esort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 155).

Qui vediamo emergere una delle grandi questioni del mondo di oggi: davanti a tante risposte parziali, che offrono solo dei «falsi infiniti» (Benedetto XVI) e che producono una strana anestesia, come dare voce agli interrogativi che tutti si portano dentro? Di fronte al torpore della vita, come risvegliare la coscienza? Per la Chiesa si apre una strada affascinante, come fu all’inizio del Cristianesimo, quando gli uomini si affannavano nella vita senza il coraggio, la forza o la serietà di esprimere le domande decisive. E, come accadde a san Paolo all’Areopago, parlare di Dio a chi ha ridotto, censurato o dimenticato i suoi “perché?”, risulta una stranezza che sembra lontana dalla vita reale con i suoi drammi e le sue prove.

Perciò nessuno di noi può iniziare un dialogo su Dio, se non riusciamo ad alimentare il lumino fumigante che arde nel cuore, senza accusare nessuno per i suoi limiti- che sono anche i nostri - e senza pretendere, ma accogliendo e ascoltando chiunque. Il compito dei cristiani - come ama ripetere Papa Francesco - è iniziare processi più che occupare spazi (cfr ibid., 222). E il primo passo è proprio ridestare il senso di quella mancanza di cui il cuore è pieno e che così frequentemente giace sotto il peso di fatiche e speranze deluse. Ma “il cuore” c’è, ed è sempre in ricerca. Il dramma di oggi consiste nel pericolo incombente della negazione dell’identità e della dignità della persona umana. Una preoccupante colonizzazione ideologica riduce la percezione dei bisogni autentici del cuore per offrire risposte limitate che non considerano l’ampiezza della ricerca di amore, verità, bellezza, giustizia che è in ciascuno. Tutti siamo figli di questo tempo e subiamo l’influsso di una mentalità che offre nuovi valori e opportunità, ma può anche condizionare, limitare e guastare il cuore con proposte alienanti che spengono la sete di Dio.Ma il cuore non si accontenta, perché, come disse Papa Benedetto XVI parlando ai giovani a San Marino, «è una finestra aperta sull’infinito» (19 giugno 2011). Perché dobbiamo soffrire e alla fine morire? Perché c’è il male e la contraddizione? Vale la pena vivere? Si può sperare ancora davanti a una “terza guerra mondiale combattuta a pezzi” e con tanti fratelli perseguitati

e uccisi a motivo della loro fede? Ha ancora senso amare, lavorare, fare sacrifici e impegnarsi? Dove va a finire la mia vita e quella delle persone che non vorremmo perdere mai? Che cosa stiamo a fare nel mondo?... Sono domande che si pongono tutti, giovani e adulti, credenti e non credenti. Prima o poi, almeno una volta nella vita, a causa di una prova o di un evento gioioso, riflettendo sul futuro dei propri figli o sull’utilità del proprio lavoro, ciascuno si trova a fare i conti con uno o più di questi interrogativi. Anche il negatore più incallito non riesce a estirparli del tutto dalla propria esistenza.

La vita non è un desiderio assurdo, la mancanza non è il segno che siamo nati “sbagliati”, ma al contrario è il campanello che ci avverte che la nostra natura è fatta per cose grandi. Come ha scritto il servo di Dio monsignor Giussani, «le esigenze umane costituiscono riferimento, affermazione implicita di una risposta ultima che sta al di là delle modalità esistenziali sperimentabili. Se venisse eliminata l’ipotesi di un “oltre”, quelle esigenze sarebbero innaturalmente soffocate» (Il senso religioso, Milano 1997, 157). Il mito di Ulisse ci parla del nostos algos, la nostalgia che può trovare soddisfazione solo in una realtà infinita.

Per questo Dio, il Mistero infinito, si è curvato sul nostro niente assetato di Lui e ha offerto la risposta che tutti attendono anche senza rendersene conto, mentre la cercano nel successo, nel denaro, nel potere, nelle droghe di qualunque tipo, nell’affermazione dei propri desideri momentanei. Solo l’iniziativa di Dio creatore poteva colmare la misura del cuore; ed Egli ci è venuto incontro per lasciarsi trovare da noi come si trova un amico. E così noi possiamo riposare anche in un mare in tempesta, perché certi della sua presenza. Ha detto Papa Francesco: «Anche se la vita di una persona è stata un disastro, se è distrutta dai vizi, dalla droga o da qualunque altra cosa, Dio è nella sua vita. […] Anche se la vita di una persona è un terreno pieno di spine ed erbacce, c’è sempre uno spazio in cui il seme buono può crescere. Bisogna fidarsi di Dio» (La Civiltà Cattolica, 19 settembre 2013, 470).

Con il tema di quest’anno, il Meeting può cooperare a un compito essenziale della Chiesa, cioè «non consentire che qualcuno si accontenti di poco, ma che possa dire pienamente: “Non vivo più io, ma Cristo vive in me” (Gal 2,20)» (Esort. ap. Evangelii gaudium, 160), perché quello di Gesù «è l’annuncio che risponde all’anelito d’infinito che c’è in ogni cuore umano» (ibid., 165). Gesù «è venuto a mostrarci, a rendere visibile l’amore che Dio ha per noi. […] Un amore attivo, reale. […] Un amore che guarisce, perdona, rialza, cura. Un amore che si avvicina e restituisce dignità. Una dignità che possiamo perdere in molti modi e forme. Ma Gesù è ostinato in questo: ha dato la vita per questo, per restituirci l’identità perduta» (Papa Francesco, Discorso nel Centro di rieducazione a Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, 10 luglio 2015). Qui sta il contributo che la fede cristiana offre a tutti e che il Meeting può testimoniare innanzitutto con la vita delle persone che lo realizzano.

Per questo il Santo Padre augura agli organizzatori e ai volontari del Meeting di andare incontro a tutti, sostenuti dal desiderio di proporre con forza, bellezza e semplicità la buona notizia dell’amore di Dio, che anche oggi si china sulla nostra mancanza per riempirla dell’acqua di vita che scaturisce da Gesù risorto. Egli chiede di pregare per il Suo ministero e invia di cuore a Lei, Eccellenza, e a tutti i partecipanti al Meeting la Benedizione Apostolica.

Nell’unire anche i miei migliori auspici, profitto della circostanza per confermarmi con sensi di distinto ossequio.

he message sent from Pope Francis

From the Vatican, August 17, 2015 To the Most Reverend Francesco Lambiasi, Bishop of Rimini, Your Excellency, On behalf of the Holy Father Pope Francis I wish to express my wormiest greetings to you, the organizers, and the participants to the 36th Meeting for Friendship amongst Peoples.

The evocative and poetic phrase selected as the main theme for this year’s Meeting – What is this lack a lack of, oh heart, of which all of a sudden you are full? (Mario Luzi) – particularly emphasizes the heart inside each of us and that which Saint Agustine described as “restless heart”, which is never satisfied and keeps looking for something that is up to its expectations. This quest is expressed through questions on the meaning of life and death, love, labour, justice, and happiness.

However, to be worthy of finding an answer, it is necessary to seriously consider one’s own humanity, always cultivating this healthy restlessness. “In this effort – as Pope Francis says – we may need but think of some ordinary human experience such as a joyful reunion, a moment of disappointment, the fear of being alone, compassion at the sufferings of others, uncertainty about the future, concern for a loved one”(Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium 155).

Hence one of today’s big issues is raised: before so many partial answers, which only offer “false infinite” (Benedict XVI) and produces a strange anaesthesia, how can everybody’s inner questions be voiced? Before the numbness of life, how can one’s conscience be awakened again? For the Church, a fascinating journey opens up, as was the case at the beginning of Christianity, when the people were busy in a life without courage, power, or seriousness to ask decisive questions. And, as experienced by St. Paul at the Areopagus, speaking of God to those who diminished, censored or forgot his “why?” appears as something strange that seems to be far from real life with its tragedies and trials.

Therefore none of us may start any discourse on God, unless we are able to fuel the tiny and smoky light burning in our heart, without accusing anybody for their limits – which are also ours – and without pretentions, but welcoming and listening to anybody. The duty of Christians, as Pope Francis loves to remark, is starting processes rather than occupying spaces (ibid., 222). And the first step lies in reawakening the sense of that lack our heart is full of and that very often lies under the burden of frustrated efforts and hopes. Yet “our heart” is there and is always in quest of something.

Today’s tragedy consists of the impending danger of negation of persons’ identity and dignity. A worrying ideological colonization diminishes the perception of the authentic needs of the heart while offering limited responses, which do not consider the scope of the quest for love, truth, beauty, and justice that is in each individual. We are all children of our time and we are influenced by a way of thinking offering new values and opportunities, which can nevertheless condition, limit, and damage our heart with alienating proposals that quench the thirst for God. But our heart is never content, as Pope Benedict XVI said when talking to the youths in San Marino, “[it] is a window open on the infinite” (19 June 2011). Why do we have to suffer and eventually to die? Why do evil and contradiction exist? Is it worth living? Is

it still possible to hope before a “third world war engaged in a piecemeal fashion” and with so many brothers being persecuted and killed due to their creed? Is loving, working, making efforts, committing oneself still meaningful? What is the destination of our life and of the people we would never want to lose? What are we doing in this world?... These questions are in everybody’s mind, young and adult people, believers and non believers alike. Sooner or later, at least once in our life, due to a challenge or a sorrowful event, thinking about our children’s future or about the usefulness of our job, each of us needs to come to terms with one or more of these questions. Even the most stubborn deniers cannot eradicate them from their own existence.

Life is not an absurd desire, the lack is not evidence that we were born “flawed”, rather it is a sign that our nature is made for great things. As God’s servant Monsignor Giussani wrote, “human needs constitute a reference, an implicit affirmation of an ultimate answer which lies beyond the experiential aspects of existence. If the hypothesis of a ‘beyond’ were to be eliminated, those needs would be unnaturally suffocated” (The Religious Sense, Montreal 1997, 115). The myth of Ulysses tells us about the nostos algos, i.e. the nostalgia that can only be fulfilled in an infinite reality.

For this reason, God, the infinite Mystery, bowed to our nothingness, thirsty of Him, and offered the answer that everybody was awaiting even without being aware of it, while they seek it in their own success, money, power, any kind of drug, in asserting their own momentary desires. Only the initiative of God the Creator could fill in the scope of the heart; and He came to us to let us find him just like when finding a friend. Thus we can rest even in stormy waters, as we can be sure of his presence. Pope Francis said: “Even if the life of a person has been a disaster, even if it is destroyed by vices, drugs or anything else-God is in this person’s life. […] Although the life of a person is a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God (America, The National Catholic Review 30 September 2013).

With this year’s theme, the Meeting can contribute to an essential task of the Church, i.e. to “stimulate a desire for this growth, so that each of us can say wholeheartedly: «It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me (Gal 2:20)» (Ap. Exhort. Evangelii Gaudium, 160) in that Jesus’ message “is the message capable of responding to the desire for the infinite which abides in every human heart” (ibid. 165). Jesus “came to show the love which God has for us. […]It is a love which is powerful and real. […]It is a love which heals, forgives, raises up and shows concern. […]It is a love which draws near and restores dignity. We can lose this dignity in so many ways. But Jesus is stubborn: he gave his very life in order to restore the identity we had lost” (Pope Francis, speech delivered at the rehabilitation centre of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, 10 July 2015).

Therefore the Holy Father wishes the organizers and volunteers of the Meeting to welcome everybody supported by the desire to spread with strength, beauty and simplicity the good news of God’s love. Once again, today the Lord bows to our lack in order to fill it with the water of life gushing from the risen Christ. His Holiness asks everybody to pray for his ministry and gives wholeheartedly his Apostolic Blessing to your Excellency and to all the Meeting participants.

Agli organizzatori, ai volontari e a tutti i partecipanti al Meeting per l’amicizia tra i popoli desidero rivolgere il saluto più cordiale e l’augurio affinché anche questa XXXVI edizione abbia il successo sperato.

La persona è il fondamento della comunità e dello Stato. La sua libertà, il valore incomprimibile del suo essere unica e irripetibile, l’integralità dei diritti umani preesistono, come indica l’articolo 2 della nostra Costituzione, agli stessi ordinamenti. Da questa radice è nato il Meeting, che nel tempo ha prodotto centinaia di incontri e discussioni, ha arricchito il dialogo, ha sviluppato maturazioni e amicizie.

In questa esperienza si sono formati tanti giovani, è cresciuta e si è fatta adulta la vostra associazione, ne ha tratto ricchezza il pluralismo della nostra società e della nostra cultura.

L’intensa poesia di Mario Luzi dalla quale avete tratto il titolo del Meeting di quest’anno “Di che è mancanza questa mancanza, cuore, che a un tratto ne sei pieno?” – scava ancor più in profondità nell’animo umano, alla ricerca della fonte di quell’incessante bisogno di verità, che sospinge le nostre energie spirituali e sociali. Viviamo in un mondo di comunicazioni immediate, di straordinarie potenzialità tecnologiche, di connessioni multiple e all’apparenza infinite. Sono opportunità che vanno messe al servizio del progetto di un umanesimo integrale, premessa dello sviluppo civile, evitando che sia la tecnica a dominarci. Ogni volta che siamo assaliti da sensazioni di strapotere scopriamo che si tratta soltanto di un’illusione se perdiamo di vista la nostra umanità, la fraternità, il desiderio del bene e di ciò che è bello, il valore della legalità, la percezione dei limiti invalicabili agli stessi poteri pubblici, l’aspirazione a una condizione di pace, di maggiore giustizia e uguaglianza.

L’ideale personalista è una grande aspirazione dell’uomo moderno che trova nelle formazioni sociali e nei corpi intermedi il suo pieno compimento. È un impegno di popolo, al quale ciascuno è chiamato a contribuire nel pluralismo delle convinzioni e delle culture.

Tutti ne trarremo beneficio. A partire dalle istituzioni e dalla politica.

Il rischio di chiusure settarie, o di tentazioni fondamentaliste, è sempre in agguato. Basta guardare attorno a noi il riemergere di populismi e nazionalismi. Ebbene, la risposta viene offerta da tante testimonianze di moralità, di solidarietà, di impresa responsabile, di governo dei conflitti, di ricostruzione del diritto laddove la sua rete è stata lacerata.

Personalismo e solidarietà, valori che si trovano alla base della nostra Costituzione, hanno bisogno di essere continuamente realizzati. E chi lo fa con generosità, accresce anche gli anticorpi per affrontare le difficoltà che si presentano nelle diverse stagioni.

La nostra società, dopo una lunga crisi economica, che ha lasciato ferite così profonde, avverte ancor di più l’esigenza di valori e di percorsi ispirati a ideali sinceri. E ha bisogno di testimoni credibili, che conducano la loro azione con coerenza e moralità, rompendo l’area grigia dell’opportunismo, che purtroppo sfocia spesso nella corruzione, germe distruttivo della società civile.

La XXXVI edizione del Meeting si apre con un importante incontro sulle religioni. Dalla capacità di dialogo, di comprensione reciproca, di collaborazione tra le religioni monoteiste dipenderà la pace nel mondo. Di questo dobbiamo essere consapevoli. Il terrorismo, alimentato anche da fanatiche distorsioni della fede in Dio, sta cercando di introdurre nel Mediterraneo, in Medio Oriente, in Africa i germi di una terza guerra mondiale.

Sta alla nostra responsabilità fermarla.

Sta a noi prosciugare l’odio, far crescere il fiducia e la cooperazione, mostrare i vantaggi

della pace.

L’Europa ha un compito di grande rilievo perché il dialogo tra le religioni monoteiste può svilupparsi già all’interno delle nostre società, divenute plurali e multietniche.

L’umanità che mostreremo nell’accogliere i profughi disperati, l’intelligenza con cui affronteremo i fenomeni migratori, la fermezza con cui combatteremo i trafficanti di esseri umani saranno il modo con il quale mostreremo al mondo la qualità della vita democratica. La democrazia si esporta con la cultura e con l’esempio.

Con questo spirito seguirò i vostri lavori, rinnovando il mio sincero augurio.

he message sent by President of the Italian Republic

The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 36th edition of the Meeting for Friendship Amongst Peoples sent a message to all organizers, volunteers and participants to the event, extending his “most cordial greetings and wishes for this edition to receive the desired success.

The person is the foundation of both community and State. The liberty, the absolute value of their being unique and unrepeatable, the completeness of human rights, come before any code and system - as stated in Article 2 of our Constitution. The Meeting stems from this notion, producing at the same time hundreds of conferences and discussions, enriching dialogue, and developing friendships and relations.

This experience has been education for many young people, and your association has grown and reached its maturity; our society and our culture’s pluralism have benefited from this.

The intense poem by Mario Luzi from which you have taken the title of this Meeting – “What is this lack a lack of, oh heart, of which all of a sudden you are full?” – digs even deeper into the human soul, in search of the source of our constant need for truth, which drives our spiritual and social energies.

We live in a world of real-time communications, extraordinary technological potential, multiple and seemingly endless connections. These opportunities should be at the service of the project of humanism as a whole, a prelude to civil development -preventing technology from dominating us. Whenever we feel super powerful we discover that, in fact, it is just an illusion: we lose sight of our humanity, fraternity, the desire for what is good and beautiful, the value of legality, the perception of limits that are impossible including for public authorities, the aspiration to a condition of peace, greater justice, and equality.

The personalist ideal is a great aspiration of the modern individual, whose fulfillment lies in social groups and intermediate bodies. It is a commitment for the entire people, everybody is called upon to contribute with the pluralism of beliefs and cultures. We shall all benefit from this. Starting from institutions and politics.

There is always a risk of sectarian reactions or fundamentalist temptations, as testified by the resurgence of populism and nationalism around us.

Well, the answer is provided by many testimonies of morality, solidarity, cooperate responsibility, conflict management, and the recovery of the rule of law whenever its structure has been damaged.

The value of personalism and solidarity, which constitute the foundation of our Constitution, need to be continually fulfilled. Those who do this with generosity contribute to strengthen the antibodies to face the difficulties that arise in different seasons.

Our society has gone through a long economic crisis, which has left deep marks, and it needs more than ever values and processes inspired by sincere ideals. It also needs credible witnesses, who behave according to consistency and morality, eliminating opportunism, which unfortunately often leads to corruption, a destructive germ for our civil society.

This 36th edition of the Meeting starts with an important conference on religions. World peace depends on the ability to dialogue, mutual understanding and collaboration between the monotheistic religions. We must be aware of this.

Terrorism fueled by fanatic distortions of faith in God is trying to introduce in the Mediterranean, Middle East, (and) Africa the germs of a third world war. It is our responsibility to stop this.

It’s up to us to drain hatred, build confidence and cooperation, show the benefits of peace.

Europe has a task of great importance because the dialogue between monotheistic religions can already develop within our own societies, which are now pluralist and multi-ethnic.

The humanity we show in receiving desperate refugees, the intelligence with which we face migratory phenomena, and the firmness with which we fight human traffickers will be the way we show the world the quality of democratic life. Democracy can be exported by means of culture and good examples.

With this spirit I shall follow your proceedings and wish you once again every success.

Un saluto a tutti i partecipanti al 36° Meeting per l’amicizia fra i popoli. Congratulazioni per un incontro così animato con migliaia di persone di diverse fedi, culture e tradizioni, che si uniscono in nome dell’amicizia e della pace. Il mondo di oggi è deturpato dai conflitti, dalle disuguaglianze e da divari crescenti. Ma ovunque vado, incontro anche persone che favoriscono la comprensione, la riconciliazione e la speranza. È proprio questo ciò che vi porta a Rimini. Ed è questo che porterà i leader mondiali, tra cui Sua Santità Papa Francesco, a New York il mese prossimo. A settembre adotteremo una nuova agenda per lo sviluppo sostenibile al fine di trasformare il nostro mondo entro il 2030. Lavorando insieme ce la possiamo fare. Credo fermamente nel potere delle persone, degli ideali e del cuore umano. Vi ringrazio per esservi riuniti per immaginare un mondo migliore e costruirlo insieme. Grazie.

Congratulations on such a spirited gathering with thousands of people of different faith, cultures, and traditions, uniting for friendship and peace. Our world today is marked by conflicts, inequality, and growing divides. But everywhere I travel, I also see people fostering understanding, reconciliation, and hope. That is what brings you to Rimini. That is what will bring the world leaders, including His Holiness Pope Francis, to New York next month. In September we will adopt a new Sustainable Development Agenda to transform our world by the year 2030. Working together, we can do it. I believe in the power of people, ideals, and the human heart. I thank you for coming together to imagine a better world and to build it. Thank you.

di Otello Cenci* Il Meeting di quest’anno ha presentato una varietà sorprendente di spettacoli, concerti, incontri e performance.

Oltre 15.000 persone hanno partecipato ai 13 principali eventi realizzati in collaborazione con soggetti artistici nazionali e stranieri.

Tra le produzioni 2015 tante sono state quelle create con il fondamentale sostegno del Meeting e ispirate dal potente verso del poeta Mario Luzi che ha titolato e provocato la XXXVI edizione del Festival internazionale riminese.

Il lungo lavoro di confronto, ricerca, contatti, viaggi e prove di un anno si è concentrato in appena sei giorni in cui la provvisoria ed eterogenea compagnia formata da un centinaio di artisti coinvolti nel corso dei mesi si è riversata nella moderna arena allestita per l’occasione nei padiglioni della Fiera di Rimini, in una teatrale unità di spazio e tempo. Qui l’audacia creativa degli artisti è salita sul temibile banco di prova rappresentato dal palco e dal pubblico: ampio e vasto il primo, vario (per provenienza, età e gusti), il secondo.

Il coraggio degli interpreti di sfidare titoli assai ‘ingombranti’, di giocarsi la notorietà con progetti d’innovazione, o, ancora, di sperimentare commistioni di generi distanti tra loro, ha rappresentato la nota caratterizzante di questa straordinaria edizione.

Il concerto-preghiera preparato dai monaci buddisti del monte Koya, in collaborazione con il coro ‘Millennium’, brilla come piccolo ma luminoso esempio di una libertà che rende audaci. Un evento culturale e artistico unico, che ha sorpreso e commosso per bellezza e intensità.

Un dialogo musicale avviato con le alternate presentazioni in forma canora e terminato con un brano corale che ha documentato in modo delicato e potente la profonda unità di cuore che lega Shodo Abukawa all’esperienza del Meeting.

Grazie all’amicizia tra i chitarristi Marco Poeta e Marco Licci, è stato presentato un esperimento di crossover musicale tra il Fado portoghese e il Griko salentino.

La nostalgia della chitarra portoghese, la forza del canto Griko e l’interpretazione di alcuni testi tradizionali da parte di Giulia Poeta hanno offerto un ulteriore contributo e una chiave di lettura alle parole prese a prestito da Mario Luzi: una serata di grande fascino di cui essere grati ancora una volta, merito della creatività e del talento di alcuni artisti senza paura.

Durante il concerto “Un cuore più grande della guerra” i giovanissimi ragazzi del coro CET hanno prodigiosamente coinvolto oltre 1.500 persone nell’esecuzione di un tradizionale canto di montagna, al termine di una stupenda serata realizzata grazie alla contagiosa passione e affascinante dedizione degli interpreti; e ancora per “Teresa de Jesus” sono state aggiunte tutte le sedie e le panche a disposizione della Chiesa del Suffragio, una delle chiese simbolo della città di Rimini.

L’opera in musica composta da un ensemble composto da attori, musicisti, cantanti, compositori e autori di grande talento e realizzata grazie alla collaborazione dello storico festival musicale della Sagra Malatestiana ha rivisitato un genere tradizionale di rara freschezza e verità: il pubblico che ha riempito la chiesa ha ringraziato con un’ovazione, continuata poi con diversi minuti di applausi.

Impossibile dimenticare che questo è stato il Meeting di una grande opera come L’annuncio a Maria di Paul Claudel, ritradotta in maniera magistrale da Fabrizio Sinisi per

ScenAperta: la compagnia, con una sana curiosità e un sincero affetto per il testo, si è confrontata con uno dei mostri sacri del teatro francese, ottenendo al termine i complimenti dall’erede dell’autore, Violaine Claudel.

Infine, grazie al talento e alla disponibilità di alcuni dei più importanti interpreti della scena teatrale internazionale, è stato possibile riascoltare una selezione di poesie straordinarie sul tema della mancanza.

Lo spettacolo, costruito come un sogno lungo un giorno, dentro cui le voci, i suoni e le visioni si rincorrono e si accavallano come sensazioni, ha inaugurato un programma artistico definito dalla capacità di osare, sperimentando nuove strade e nuove forme suggerite da incontri, circostanze, passioni.

Il coraggio di alcuni artisti di seguire piste non battute alla scoperta di se stessi e del mondo ha offerto alla manifestazione momenti di sorprendente bellezza e verità, confermandone la vivacità creativa.

Finché ci sarà questa voglia di mettersi a nudo e rischiare un confronto anche espressivo su temi importanti dell’esistenza, sarà bello costruire insieme il Meeting di Rimini. *Responsabile Spettacoli Meeting Rimini

By Otello Cenci* In the past year, the Meeting presented a surprising multiplicity of shows, concerts, conferences and performances.

More than fifteen thousand people took part in the thirteen main events organized in cooperation with foreign and national artistic subjects.

Among the many productions in 2015, were a lot created with the fundamental support of the Meeting and inspired by the compelling line of the Italian poet Mario Luzi, which headed and provoked the XXXVI edition of the international festival in Rimini.

The long process of discussion, research, relationships, travels and rehearsals converged in just six days, in which a temporary and miscellaneous company formed by hundreds of artists involved over the months, poured out in the modern arena set up for the occasion in the pavilions of Rimini’s fair, in a theatrical unity of time and space.

Here the creative audacity of the artists got up on the fearsome test represented by the stage and the audience: wide and ample the former, uneven (by origin, age and taste) the latter.

The performers’ courage of challenging very “cumbersome” titles, of risking their reputation with innovative projects, or, moreover, of testing mixtures of genre distant from themselves, represented the characterizing note of this extraordinary edition.

The concert-prayer prepared by the Buddhist monks of mount Koya, together with the choir “Millennium”, shines as a little but bright example of freedom that makes one bold.

A unique cultural and artistic event, which amazed and provoked with beauty and intensity.

A musical dialogue launched with alternate presentations in singing form, and ended with a choral piece, which in a delicate and powerful way documented the deep unity of the hearts that ties Shodo Abukawa to the Meeting experience.

Thanks to the friendship between the guitarists Marco Poeta e Marco Licci, an experiment of musical crossover was presented, between the Portuguese Fado and the Griko from the Italian region of Salento.

The nostalgia of the Portuguese guitar, the strength of the Griko song and the interpretation of some traditional texts by Giulia Poeta, offered a farther contribution and interpretation to the words borrowed by Mario Luzi; an evening of great fascination, and we are grateful to the talent of a few artists with no fear.

During the concert “A heart greater than war”, the young boys of the CET choir miraculously involved more than fifteen hundred people in the execution of a traditional mountain song, at the end of a marvelous evening realized thanks to the contagious passion and fascinating dedication of the performers. Moreover, all the chairs and benches available were added for Teresa de Jesus, in the Church of Intercession, one of the symbol church of the city of Rimini.

The play in music composed by an ensemble of actors, musicians, singers, composers and talented authors, and achieved thanks to the collaboration of the historic music festival “Sagra Malatestiana”, revisited a traditional genre of rare candor and truth; the audience who filled up the church thanked with an ovation, continuing with a few minutes applause.

It is impossible to forget that this has been the Meeting of a great opera such as the

“The Tidings brought to Mary” by Paul Claudel, translated in masterful way by Fabrizio Sinisi for ScenAperta.

The company, with an upright curiosity and an honest affection for the text, compared itself with one of the giants of French theatre, obtaining at the end compliments by the heir of the author, Violaine Claudel.

Lastly, thanks to the talent and willingness of some of the most important performers of the International theatrical scene, it was possible to listen to a selection of extraordinary poems on the theme of lack.

The show, constructed as a day-long dream, in which voices, sounds and visions chased each other and gathered as sensations, launched an artistic program defined by the ability to dare, experimenting new paths and new shapes suggested by meeting, events, passions.

The courage of some artists to follow unfrequented paths in order to discover themselves and the world, offered to the manifestation moments of surprising truth and beauty, proving a creative vitality.

As long as this desire to lay bare and risk a debate on the important themes of existence lasts, even in expressive form, it will be beautiful to build together the Rimini Meeting. *Performing Arts Manager of Rimini Meeting

TU SEI UN BENE PER ME YOU ARE A GOOD FOR ME Rimini, Friday 19th - Thursday 25th August 2016 #meeting16 “È una ricerca, quella che dobbiamo intraprendere, che si esprime in domande sul significato della vita e della morte, sull’amore, sul lavoro, sulla giustizia e sulla felicità…..

Perché dobbiamo soffrire e alla fine morire? ha ancora un senso amare, lavorare, fare sacrifici e impegnarsi? Che cosa siamo a fare nel mondo?”.

Citando questi interrogativi, che Papa Francesco poneva nel Messaggio inviato all’inizio del Meeting 2015, Eugenio Scalfari, su Repubblica del 23 agosto, così li commentava: “Rispondere a quelle domande realizza l’incontro della Chiesa con la modernità, ci fa sentire tutti simili.”

Proprio nell’alveo di questo incontro con la modernità il Meeting ha tentato di collocarsi, invitando tutti a confrontarsi sulla provocazione contenuta nei versi di Luzi “Di che è mancanza questa mancanza, cuore, che a un tratto ne sei pieno?”. È stato un vero incontro, senza soluzioni precostituite, senza tesi da dimostrare o battaglie da lanciare.

Un incontro semplicemente generato dalla convinzione, suffragata dall’esperienza, che tutti gli uomini condividano quella mancanza e che il solo fatto di trovarsi a ragionare della vita, dei problemi, delle grandi emergenze e delle tragedie spesso irrisolvibili, proprio a partire dall’esperienza di quella mancanza, sia un bene per sé e per tutti gli uomini. È stato un incontro libero, a tutto campo, su tutto e con chiunque. “Qui si parla di tutto e la gente ti guarda negli occhi”, commentava stupito un ospite importante, Timothy Shriver, nipote di John Kennedy, uno di quegli americani che, con i ventimila eventi all’anno che organizza con Special Olympics, di gente deve averne vista tanta.

Non saremo mai sufficientemente grati a don Giussani per avere condiviso con noi questo entusiasmante amore alla libertà dell’altro, questa capacità di guardarlo negli occhi.

Non siamo poveri né di Verità né di certezze, ma, come diceva don Julian Carrón nel memorabile incontro al Meeting con il Professor Weiler: “Abbiamo imparato che l’unico rapporto con la verità è quello che passa attraverso la libertà.”

Questo dialogo, generativo di una amicizia e di una commossa condivisione, ha consolidato storie e rapporti, ne ha creato di nuovi, ha messo in moto strade per l’affronto di bisogni, ha fatto intravvedere percorsi di ricerca, ha creato trame e relazioni da una parte all’altra del mondo.

“Tu sei un bene per me” sarà il titolo del 2016.

Non è stato difficile pronunciare questa frase l’ultimo giorno di Meeting, perché in essa sono racchiusi tutto il valore e la ricchezza vissute nell’esperienza del Meeting 2015.

Un bene sono stati i volontari, gli ospiti, i relatori, gli artisti e i curatori delle mostre, i partner e gli amici che ci sostengono.

Un bene sono stati anche coloro che non ci hanno apprezzato, che ci hanno, più o meno garbatamente, criticato, perché ancora una volta ci hanno costretto a dare le

ragioni di ciò che facciamo, o, eventualmente, anche a correggerci.

Ma cosa può generare uno sguardo all’altro e alla realtà tutto pervaso dalla certezza di una positività? Quale socialità e quale affronto dei problemi si profila all’orizzonte di una posizione che non abbia come criterio la semplice tolleranza del diverso, ma che intravveda un bene proprio nella diversità? Ma soprattutto cosa rende possibile una posizione come questa?

La passione ad iniziare il lavoro in vista del 2016 nasce dal desiderio di potere cominciare a confrontarsi insieme a tanti su queste sfide e su tutte quelle che il Mistero della realtà vorrà farci intravedere.

These questions were asked by Pope Francis in the message sent for the beginning of the Meeting 2015.

On 23rd August Eugenio Scalfari, writing in Repubblica, commented: “Answering those questions makes the encounter between the Church and modernity happen, it makes us all feel the same.”

The Meeting tried to position itself within this encounter with modernity, inviting us all to face the provocations held within the lines of Mario Luzi: “What is this lack a lack of, oh heart, of which all of a sudden you are full?”

It has been a real encounter, without ready-made solutions, without theories to be proven or fights to be promoted.

An encounter simply generated from the belief – supported by experience – that all mankind shares this lack and that gathering to talk about life, problems, the great emergencies and the often unsolvable tragedies, starting from the experience of that lack, is a good for oneself and for all mankind.

It was a free encounter, a comprehensive meeting, about everything and with anyone.

“People talk about everything here and they look into your eyes,” commented one of the amazed guests of honour, Timothy Shriver - John F. Kennedy’s nephew - who is one of those Americans that, having organised more than 20000 events a year with the Special Olympics, must have seen a lot people in his lifetime.

We could never be grateful enough to Father Giussani, for having shared with us his fascinating love for other people’s freedom, this ability to look into their eyes. We met the Truth and we have many certainties in life, but as Father Julian Carrón said during the unforgettable conference with Professor Weiler at the Meeting: “We have learnt that the only relationship with the truth goes through freedom.”

This dialogue, which engenders friendship and a moving way of sharing, has strengthened narratives and relationships, has created some new ones, has found new ways to face needs, has thrown light on research paths and has weaved relations all over the world.

“You are a good for me” will be the title for 2016! It wasn’t hard to say this sentence on the Meeting’s last day, because it sums up the value and richness experienced during the Meeting 2015.

The volunteers, guests, speakers, artists, researchers of exhibitions, partners and friends who have sustained us have all been a good.

But also those who didn’t appreciate our work, those who might have politely criticized us, have been a good for us, because they forced us once again to give reasons for what we do, or eventually even to correct ourselves.

But what can be generated by a gaze towards others and towards a reality that is pervaded by the certainty of positivity? What type of social relationships and which ways to face problems emerge from the attitude of seeing a good in diversity and not simply the tolerance of differences? And above all, what makes this attitude possible?

The passion to begin working for the Meeting 2016 is born from the desire to start.
