Whether you’re an avid user of the existing Meeker China Wall Trail System, an occasional explorer who takes an out of town guest up for a hike once a year, or have never ventured up into the hills adjacent to town, you should be proud of the cooperative efforts your local, county, state, and federal government agencies have taken to provide and expand these great trails in our community. This summer ERBM and the BLM White River Field Office will oversee 4.54 miles of trail expansion thanks to the joint investments of ERBM, the Town of Meeker, Rio Blanco County - Economic Development, BLM, and a $106,750 grant award administered through Colorado Parks and Wildlife and funded by the Federal Highways Recreational Trails Program. Now that’s federalism at its finest, all levels of government working together to get things done. This expansion project, which you can see more detail about at ERBMrec.com/park-projects, has only been made possible because of the tireless efforts of countless professionals from various agencies working through all the required prerequisites for this type of development, including: federal environmental assessments, wildlife impact studies, public comment periods, concept design and mapping, industry cost analyses, grant and other partner funding processes, volunteer support coordination, etc. Needless to say, there are a lot of hurdles to jump through, but achieving an attractive and sustainable trail system that drives both local and regional visitation to our great outdoors, and accomplishes an ongoing positive economic impact, makes it all worth it. Another collaborative government undertaking that will be very noticeable once complete is the Main Street Committee’s project to install new directional signage on Market Street and throughout Meeker, which will better orient out of town travelers to all the wonderful public assets we have to offer here, including: the trails system, fairgrounds, recreation center, golf course, library, schools, etc. This enhancement has been made possible thanks again to broad multi-agency support, including: DOLA, Town of Meeker, ERBM, Library District, assistance from the Town of Rangley engineer, CDOT, and others. ERBM is proud to work with leaders in the public and private sectors who labor together in the collective undertaking of making Meeker a more viable and vibrant place to live and play. These are just a few current practical examples of the varied and ongoing efforts of both entities and individuals working together to create a vibrant community for the residents, visitors, and future generations of Rio Blanco County.
