While attempting to balance oneself in space is a video in which I reflect upon the gesture of defining and distributing a standard unit throughout a community, as a way of tuning the instruments this community use for relating to the world. I am looking at the eleventh International Pyrheliometer Comparison Event that took place in Davos in October 2010. Here, 85 scientists spent three weeks in order to calibrate their instruments according to a standard unit. They measure the strength of solar radiation, compare their data and generate a verified calibration factor for each of their instruments. This allows for all of their measurements to be comparable. Such procedures are a cornerstone in scientific production of knowledge. I seek to reflect such procedures in a portrait that can render an image of it and that can allow for other forms of knowledge to emerge and inform this idea, or even this way of relating to the world through defining a standard unit, a point of reference to which everything refers.
