Cervical Foraminotomy Spine Surgery MedMonks Health WHAT IS IT? A cervical foraminotomy is a type of spine surgery performed from the back of the neck so as to relieve pressure on one or more spinal nerves. A small portion of joint and bone which overlie on the spinal nerve, as well as any soft tissue that may be causing compression, are carefully removed.

In rare cases a disc prolapsed is also removed. Spine Surgery in India is provided at the best hospitals by highly qualified doctors and surgeons. Hospitals in India are equipped with latest and modern technology.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THE SURGERY? 

A person with degenerative disorder or a disc prolapsed (bulge)

Adults who are of age 18-60 years with symptomatic cervical disc disease who have failed to improve after 6 months of non-operative care.

A healthy person who is a candidate for surgical spine surgery like cervical spine fusion.

Person who has one or two damaged discs that causes compression of a nerve.

BENEFITS 

Relief of neural compression (pressure on the spinal nerves)

Pain alleviation

Medication reduction

Prevention of deterioration

RISKS ASSOCIATED Just like any other surgery, cervical foraminotomy also has a few risks associated with it such as: 

Wound breakdown

Infections

Drug allergies

Stroke

Pulmonary embolism

Other rare complications

PROCEDURE

A general anaesthetic will be given to you to put you to sleep.

A breathing tube called endotracheal tube will be inserted.

Intravenous (IV) antibiotic and steroids are injected so as to prevent any postoperative nausea and infection.

Calf compression devices are used throughout surgery so that the risk of developing blood clots in your legs is minimised.

A vertical incision of about 3-5 cm will be made down the back of your neck in the midline.

The muscles at the back of the neck are then gently separated from the spinal bones, and the bony roof over the spinal nerve is carefully removed using small drills and other fine instruments. Any soft tissue that causes compression is also removed.

Once the bone and other tissues are removed, the spinal nerve is decompressed.

After the procedure is completed, the wound is closed with staples or sutures.

Immediately after the surgery some pain is felt, especially at the incision site. You will be given a few pain medications to help control the pain. RECOVERY GUIDELINES Following are a few guidelines for a healthy and a fast recovery after the surgery: 

Maintain a healthy diet with high fibre

Take prescribed medications on time

Make sure to take small frequent walks

Do not lift heavy objects

Stop smoking

Make sure that you keep your wound dry



Report any persistent oozing, redness, discharge, or clear drainage from the wound to your doctor.



To reduce scarring, gently rub Vitamin E cream into your wound starting from 3 weeks after the surgery.
