BARCELONA BLUEGRASS BAND WEB Two great musicians, Llu铆s G贸mez on banjo and harmonica player Joan Pau Cumellas, present the Barcelona Bluegrass Band project. This group is primarily dedicated to playing the original music of the Appalachian Mountains of the USA. However, they enrich the traditional sound with touches of blues, country, jazz and celtic music. The other band members are Miguel Talavera on guitar and dobro and Maribel Rivero on doublebass. All of the band are specialists in bluegrass which is a demanding style and one which captivates lovers of acoustic music. While paying homage to the music of the mountains of North America, the group also plays its own compositions, giving a modern and personal touch to this musical genre.
This formation presents a modern concept of the banjo, and is one of the few in the world that includes the harmonica as a lead instrument in this context. This has led them to being very well received in numerous festivals both in our country and in Ireland, England, Holland and France.
After the good international reception of the CD ?Barcelona Bluegrass Band? (2009) with Oriol Saña, Robbie K.Jones, Ricky Araiza, Albert Bello and special guests from Nashville such as Tim Carter or Alison Brown, we now present our new work entitled 'Old Time Blues' (2011). This is an album where bluegrass meets the classic sounds of blues and jazz, with Oriol Saña, Robbie K. Jones, Valentín Moya, Albert Bello and Josep Traver. A special guest from the USA, the great banjo master Tony Trischka, collaborates on two tracks. Following the line of his first CD, Lluís Gómez creates compositions with his banjo which fit perfectly with the sound of Joan Pau's harmonica. This gives a unique touch to this acoustic formation. Lluís Gómez, 5-String banjo. He is one of the rare musicians dedicated completely to this magnificent instrument in Spain. For years it has travelled to the United States to learn his secrets with the teachers banjistas more venerated of the bluegrass and the music folk. He itself is already in a modal in our country. It composes his own music, does pedagogic meetings on the banjo and publishes articles in EUA's specialized magazines.
Joan Pau Cumellas, harmonica. Known internationally by his interpretive skill with this small instrument, he leads formations as Mr. Hurricane Band and it works for artists like Quico Pi de la Serra, Big Mama, Angela Brown or Manolo García, and for television and cinema. It is one of few harmonica players that it dominates styles as the 'country' and 'bluegrass' and is capable of taking the instrument up to surprising limits in this area.
Miguel Talavera, acoustic guitar and vocals. He is a fingerpickin virtuoso. He has accompanied numerous international artists of blues, country and jazz and works for the company of spectacles Universal Studios. Likewise, it does pedagogic meetings of his instrument and musical recordings in study for other groups.
Maribel Rivero, uprightbass. With a classical guitar background, she?s one of the most popular bassist in the folk, blues and bluegrass Barcelona scene. She has accompanied several North American artists in tours along our territory (Tony Trischka, Bill Keith, Tom Corbett, Jayme Stone, Andy Glandt and Trae and Jamie Lynn Buckner) and plays in Badalona's Big Band directed by Carlos Vecino and the Sagrada Familia classical orchestra . She shares these activities with the teaching in schools of music in Catalonia.
PRESS The Barcelona Bluegrass Band is the brainchild of five-string-banjo player Lluís Gómez and harmonica player Joan Pau Cumellas. They assembled a cast of Spanish instrumentalists such as Miguel Talavera, Ricky Araiza and Albert Bello (guitar), Oriol Saña (fiddle), Maribel Sánchez (double bass) and Robbie K.Jones (cajón) to realise their musical vision. The CD is kicking off with Earl Scruggs' "Blowing Groundspeed," followed on the heels by the traditional "Angelina the Baker" (a Stephen Foster song turned into an old-timey instrumental, compare -> FW#39) There's self-penned pieces by Gómez, more from Grisman and Monroe, plus the famous "Orange Blossom Special" and "Cluck Old Hen" and some traditional Irish jigs and reels. The playing is excellent, the arrangements imaginative. The overall sound is fresh, stretching bluegrass music into a new acoustic sphere. Sometimes it needs outsiders such as these Spaniards to show them Yanks on which side the bread is buttered on. If you don't believe my word, the excellence has been recognized by Alison Brown and Tim Carter who contribute some duelling five-string banjos (#18, #25, #38). Gracias, muchachos! Thomas Keller "Folkworld" Last week I received a copy of "The Barcelona Bluegrass Band" new CD!! WOW it is a CD you will listen to over and over again. A nice blending of Bluegrass, Jazz and Flamenco. Oriol Sana, who plays a Bubinga 5 string violin I made for him a year or so ago, is an amazing talent! I had heard some of his music before and I knew he was extremely talented, but when I heard him play on this CD I was BLOWN AWAY! this guy is Smokin' I would not encourage people to listen to this CD if it were not sooo good. If it was poor showing for my violin I wouldn't want people to hear it but this CD is just the opposite. Oriol really makes my violin sound great and I am proud to have him as a friend and player. The other members of the band are all super talents. I am a harmonica player so I was especially excited by the Wolrd Class harmonica by Joan Pau Cumellas. This guy redefines what can be done with a harmonica! Barry Dudley, Violin Maker It is refreshing, inspiring and surprising to discover something so totally new could emerge from the low-tech combination of traditional acoustic instruments. What is particularly interesting is that Barcelona Bluegrass Band combines harmonica and Cajon percussion elements with traditional Bluegrass instruments in driving and fun way. The blended virtuosity of these fine musicians sets a new standard for the acoustic music of today. Tom Nechville, banjo inventor
