start your degree here!

Medicine Hat College has transfer agreements in place with many universities including the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge, Athabasca University, University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, Montana State University, and Mount Royal University. Starting your university education with us can provide advantages over a larger institution, including low tuition, less expensive accommodations, and more one-on-one time with instructors who know you by name. Depending on the program you choose, you may be able to take up to two years on our campus and then transfer on to university. Many professional university programs [such as Law, Medicine, or Chiropractics] may require a degree to be admitted. On its own, a degree can increase your employability and credibility, as degree completion demonstrates commitment to reaching goals. Our program list [see previous pages] includes several degrees that can be completed at our campus. This section outlines other degrees that you can start here and transfer on to another institution to complete. As transfer agreements vary from one university to another, it is recommended that you meet with an Academic Advisor to put together an academic plan to reach your goals. If you have questions about starting your university degree here or would like to book an appointment, call 403.529.3819.

what is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and technical training that leads to certification as a journeyman. The program is administered by Alberta Learning.

Apprenticeship involves learning a trade through observing, practicing, studying, and attending technical courses. These courses run from six to twelve weeks in length during each period of your apprenticeship. In the field you will work under a qualified tradesperson and learn the principles, skills, tools, and materials of the trade. The term of apprenticeship varies in length depending on the trade. It can be anywhere from two to four training periods [two to four years]. During this time, you are indentured to an employer who has agreed to provide an opportunity for you to gain work experience in the trade. You are obligated to perform the job to the best of your ability and usually supply your own tools.

funding

The Human Resources Development Centre may provide some financial support when you attend technical training courses. Contact your local Canada/Alberta Service Centre for more information. Other funding is available through Student Finance in the form of grants based on financial requirements.

special fees and expenses

programs

Automotive Service Technician Carpenter Electrician Heavy Equipment Technician Plumber/Gasfitter Steamfitter/Pipefitter Rig Technician Welder Pre-Employment programs are offered in some of the trades. [please visit mhc.ab.ca for further info]

Tuition fees are applicable as per Provincial Government policy. Books and supplies vary with each trade and cost about $900 per training period. A consumable materials fee is applicable to all apprenticeship students. For more information on careers in trades, process and requirements, and tuition, visit tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca.

As an apprentice, you are an employee and are usually paid an hourly wage. Wages increase according to experience. Depending on the trade, wages range from 50% to 90% of a journeyman’s wages.

international mobility program

want to study

abroad?

There are several ways that Medicine Hat College students can combine their education with an international study component. Medicine Hat College offers students the ability to experience student exchange, short term study abroad or international degree completion opportunities and realizes the value of these initiatives in terms of creating better global awareness and understanding of different cultures and languages.

student exchange

Through an exchange agreement with a partner university or college, each institution allows select full-time students in good academic standing to enroll at a partner institution for one semester. Students remain registered at their home institution while on exchange, and therefore, do not have to apply for re-admission upon return.

short term study abroad

Short Term Study Abroad is initiated by a faculty member from the program you are registered in. The Office of International Education will assist in the process, if necessary. Please contact your program coordinator for opportunities.

international

degree completion

MHC is proud to facilitate relationships with international universities and colleges that will offer MHC diploma graduates the opportunity to earn an international degree. MHC currently has partnership agreements with post-secondary institutions in:

AUSTRALIA malaysia CHINA mexico JAPAN taiwan KOREA thailand
