transplants. It is the only one of its kind in Edinburgh, where I see you from consultation, through treatment and all follow ups through recovery. Today’s procedures are incredibly advanced and carry a success rate of 90-100%, resulting in a natural finish. Hair transplantation can improve hair density at the front of the head and the crown, by moving follicles from unaffected areas at the back of the head. We use two very successful techniques for hair transplant surgery: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT or Strip Technique) surgery. Both procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic, and both are extremely effective at delivering natural results. While both procedures have pros and cons, the best treatment is the one that suits your needs and scalp. FUE involves removing healthy hair follicles directly from a donor area (usually at the back of the head, where hair is plentiful) and grafting them onto the thinning or balding areas. There is no detectable scarring and in most cases, patients are able to return to work within the week. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and as stitches aren’t required, recovery time is reduced. In cases where there are not enough follicles to extract individually, then a strip of follicles can be extracted, which is the FUT method. This is usually taken from the middle of the back of the head, an area which is largely immune to DHT. The FUT strip method leaves a fine, pale linear scar at the back of your head, which is easily covered by your own hair. Dissolvable sutures are used, which are usually absorbed within two to three weeks, although I recommend removing them between eight and twelve days after the procedure. Many old methods of hair transplants saw patients take weeks to recover, however today’s methods are sophisticated enough that most patients return to work and normal daily life after a week following their surgery. The results are quicker too. Within two to three weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but the new implanted follicles remain and patients will start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will have attained 60% of new hair growth after six to nine months, with almost full restoration after a year. It is always going to be a big decision as to whether hair transplant surgery is right for you, but if you are concerned about thinning hair or balding, hair transplantation can significantly improve your appearance and your self-confidence – it’s no exaggeration to say that it really can change your life. However, as with every medical procedure, it’s essential that you do your research, and book a consultation with a specialist doctor or surgeon trained in these procedures, who will give you honest and informed advice about the best treatment for you. Dr Nestor’s specialist operating theatre for hair restoration procedures is now open; please visit www.drnestor.co.uk to book a consultation.
