THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS by the Automotive and Engineering Department of Manchester College A company’s workforce is the backbone to any business. Up-skilling your employees can give you the edge over your competitors and ensure that you have a team of people who have the right skills, who are doing the right job, to help improve the service you offer your customers and ultimately increase your turnover. The Manchester College has developed its automotive and engineering centre to a high standard and it is now one of the most technologically advanced training centres in the North West. Through partnerships with Greater Manchester Police and donations from major car manufacturers such as Jaguar, Landrover, Vauxhall and Ford, the College provides state-ofthe-art training vehicles and equipment to give all our students the best possible practical experience. For customers coming into a business, and for employees showcasing their skills to their employers, it is vital to ensure that a consistent level of quality is maintained. For people working within the retail motor industry, accreditation is a big step towards achieving this acknowledgement. As an approved ATA assessment centre, the College can offer you the chance to gain industry approved accreditation in a stateof-the-art training centre. ATA technician training and assessment is offered in paint, panel, MET, light vehicle, fast fit, air conditioning, and vehicle damage assessment. Industry accreditation is just one of the options on offer at The Manchester College to those working in the motor vehicle industry. The Automotive and Engineering department at the College offers courses, Apprenticeships, and up-skilling programmes, which can help people enhance their existing skills and help career progression.

Using skills to aid our Olympic hopefuls Students enrolled on the Vehicle Body and Paint Operations diploma courses were given the exciting opportunity of working on the Great Britain (GB) bobsleigh before it was used at the Winter Olympics qualifying stages.

The GB bobsleigh team needed the students to repair damage which was sustained on the track and take off as much of the old paint as possible to reduce the weight and maximise track times. The students worked on the 2man and 4-man bobsleighs, respraying and repairing bodywork. Student Umar Khan, 19, from Crumpsall said: “Working on the Team GB bobsleigh is definitely an inspiration. It’s been an interesting thing for us to do because there are more curves than on a car and it’s something that you don’t get to do every day.” Neil Hughes, Course Tutor Level 2 Paint and Body Refinishing said: “This was a great opportunity for my students to be involved in. Once the Bobsleigh arrived the students were really eager to work, they took great care of it and got stuck in straight away. This project was certainly a massive boost to my students’ knowledge.” Lamin Deen, GB Bobsleigh Team said: “The paint refinishing job the students at The Manchester College carried out has pushed us to achieve a great set of results to start the season. The sleigh received no end of compliments from the rest of the world teams, pilots, coaches who competed in Austria.” For further information how the Automotive and Engineering Department at The Manchester College can help you, visit www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk/subject-area/automotive-and-engineering

Female Focus

on ...

Jeanette Simkins of Macclesfield MOT & Service Centre

STOP PRESS Jeanette got married during the production of this magazine and we would like to wish her every happiness for the future.

In our first ‘Female Focus’ feature, we talk to Jeanette Simkins who is a Service Advisor at Macclesfied MOT and Service Centre. Jeanette runs all aspects of the Service Reception and can often be found under a vehicle asking questions to further her technical knowledge of vehicles in order to have the confidence to answer questions from the customers. How long have you been with Macclesfield MOT & Service Centre and why did you choose the automotive industry? I have worked at the garage for 5 years, I was working at another garage as a Book keeper, when the job became available at Macclesfield MOT. Although I knew very little about cars, I fancied the challenge and the chance of customer interaction. Historically the automotive industry has been a male oriented business, as a female how do you think the role of women has changed the face of garages in the past couple of decades? I can only answer this question as a female working office based, however I do feel that a female presence can diffuse aggression. Customers do enjoy the interaction between us and also seem to have respect for the knowledge I have gained and females customers seem to feel more at ease when they are speaking to me, they have trust in what I say and appreciate me explaining aspects of the repairs, which in past experiences, they say they have been made to feel stupid. What is the one thing that you love about your job? and why? I love the trust and respect I have gained from all our customers, especially Paul and Sean’s existing customers, some of 20 years!! It’s nice when they ask for me!! (some would only talk to Paul).

What (if anything) frustrates you most about your customers? When I am unable to help them as they have left it to the last minute to book their car in. I get very frustrated when customers assume I cannot help them with a problem as I am female, but it’s great when I can and they then respect me. If you could give one piece of advice to a female wanting to start a career in the automotive industry – what would it be? Be aware that although you are working in a male dominated business, you can make a difference and learn as much as possible about vehicle repairs to give you the confidence to carry out your job and to help customers feel confident in what you are telling them.

TO BLOG OR NOT TO BLOG . . . ? Automotive Marketing Company, Media Angelus explain what a blog is and how it can benefit your company. Blogs - the definition of a blog in Wikipedia is: "A blog (a portmanteau of the term web log) is a discussion or information site published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order so the most recent post appears first. " A bit wordy, but essentially a blog at its basic level. So how does that help you? Well these days no business can afford to ignore the digital age and its effect on your marketing and sales strategies. If you have a dealership, bodyshop, service garage or all three combined, then you must have a web presence. And if you want to get the best exposure out of your marketing then you should be incorporating a blog, and an emailed newsletter or some kind of regular contact with your existing and potential customers as part of those strategies. And if you think you have no time for such activities then think again. We can show you ways to reduce the amount of time you need spend on maintaining that contact, by automating the basic tasks and giving good quality information to your customers. Don’t know how? If you can have a conversation over the garden fence with your neighbour then you can blog. If you can send an email then you can send regular newsletters. And if you know how to look up a website, then you can find content and information for your blog. And if you really can’t do any of those things then there are people who can do it for you and for very little cost. AUTOMOTIVE VISION—Issue 1, Quarter 3

You can set up a blog in many different types of software, but probably the two most well known are WordPress and Blogger – the latter is run by Google. The main difference between these two are that both run free sites, where you pay no domain fees, hosting fees or servicing fees – BUT (and it’s a big consideration) you are open to having that blog taken down with no notice for any number of reasons. The servers may go down, you may have something on your site which has been reported, or other reasons over which you have no control. Not a good scenario. So the best compromise in my view is to buy your own domain name – relevant to your business – and use the WordPress software on that domain at a hosting company for which you will pay annual hosting fees (the whole thing for less than £100 a year). There are many to choose from (just check they can run WordPress first). Then you have control and the worst that can happen is the hosting company’s server could crash (they have backups – and so would you right?) And blogs are not just for chatting to people, they can earn you a passive income too. Simple links placed strategically through the blog can lead to automated commission payments and valuable links through the internet. All helpful in maintaining the holy grail of the Google index. Heck there is very little about a blog that is negative other than the ones that are designed to be offensive or derogatory. And that’s not you is it? I don’t have time I hear you say, well in that case Media Angelus can set up and run your blog for you and create your newsletters for a lot less than you think!

Write-off Avoidance Programmes A number of auto manufacturers have introduced write-off avoidance programmes over the past year. The primary aim, of course, is to boost parts sales, however there are clearly benefits for approved repairers – an increased level of repair work – as well as vehicle owners, who don’t have to cope with possible discrepancies between the write-off offer from their insurer and replacement costs. Below is a brief summary of the approach that the manufacturers have taken to this issue as at October 2012. The information has been provided by relevant dealer groups.

FGAUK: (Fiat, Alfa & Chrysler) treat each case on its merits and the appropriate zone aftersales business development manager has the autonomy to adjust the nett parts prices to dealers to reduce the overall price of the parts for a repair. This needs to be auditable both from a dealer and FGAUK point and all invoices will be scrutinised along with estimates, repair orders and invoices from bodyshop to show a reduction in its labour, materials, paint costs to ensure the vehicle is repaired and all parties benefit from this. Contact your One Call Main Dealer for more information.

Vauxhall: do have a programme but repairs only through their own bodyshop network

Mercedes-Benz: have a progamme but only to their own approved bodyshops.

Land Rover: – No progamme Nissan: – see opposite Peugeot: – Citroen/Peugeot have a program called ResQ – Contact Parts Northwest on 0161 848 6800 for further details

Volvo - If the vehicle is borderline the dealer has to fill out a form with all the vehicle details, damage and costings. Volvo will then evaluate this and if they think it is a potential repair will adjust parts discount to try to keep the vehicle repairable. Contact your One Call Main Dealer for more information.

Toyota: - (note: information provided by Bentleys (Warrington) Ltd). With the event of the general downturn in Body parts sales across most franchises caused by insurance companies insisting on panel repair, copy parts or green parts supply, Toyota's parts sales in reality for original fit parts is limited. Cars are often written off as uneconomical repairs because the labour, paint and parts add up to what the car is worth on paper. Toyota now are dipping their toes into the world of Write off avoidance. Pilot programmes are currently running at a couple of dealers, at centres with in-house body repair facilities on site so Toyota can see what's needed to put a workable program into the network. We are currently unsure if this will benefit external Body Repair Centres at all, lets hope it will. It may funnel heavily damaged vehicles into Toyota Centres then again it may not so we will have to wait and see. Our hope at Bentleys is that it will support our own smaller "Write off Avoidance Programme". We are currently operating it on a case by case basis when the cars are a little older. How it works is this, we go out to the Body Repair Centre, take the order, price it out checking availability of parts, agree the order, check the value of the repair and of the vehicle, agree discount, take a one off upfront payment by cheque and finally supply the parts. Any subsequent order for the same vehicle or other parts are at the normal trade terms we normally offer. Yes its a bit hit and miss and could be open to abuse by shops claiming the cars going to be written off when in fact its not and its a way of getting better discounts. Obviously we need to retain some profit to offer the program and maintain the services we offer so if we feel that its not near write off we will not offer the programme. Lets wait and see what happens. Porsche: Pricing Support Requests - Revised Information and Form Pricing Support Requests can enable Porsche Centres to offer customers, with particular circumstances, special prices on a part or set of parts. These are handled through the Parts Operations Team Pricing support requests must be supplied with a valid reason of why the customer, or Porsche Centre, requires help with the price of a Part. Pricing support should only be applied for where there is a specific market reason Competitive pricing, Insurance write off etc. However, Pricing Support should not be used as a method of goodwill. All PCGB goodwill support should be raised through the Porsche Customer Assistance Centre. Nor will requests for price discounts on bulk purchases be accepted. You must supply a required Centre Net price to enable us to give the appropriate level of support. Please ensure that the requested price is of a realistic value, for example requests for a new price of £1.00 or for a 50% discount will not be entertained. Also please indicate if the Labour Rate is being supported by your Centre, Bodyshop or 3rd party repairer. Contact your One Call Main Dealer for more information. It’s a fact that perfectly repairable vehicles are being written off by insurance companies. Not because they are beyond repair but ‘beyond economical repair’. These vehicles will take a variety of routes from ending up with salvage agents who will dismantle them or sell them as repairable vehicles or even purchased by the policy holder to have repaired themselves. The danger is that these vehicles could be repaired by bodyshops using parts from a vehicle involved in an accident and not using the correct methods of repair and the vehicles end up re-insured and back on the road. The Ford Write-Off Avoidance Programme applies to CAT C & D vehicles and is only available to the Ford Accident Repair Centres and selected repairers who have PAS125 and attempts to bridge that gap by making it easy to submit a claim for the Vehicle Damage Assessor and offering a contribution to reduce the repair costs. It’s as easy as that. If a vehicle is written off there is a cost involved for the bodyshop so they would prefer to repair vehicles it’s how they make a living and since 2010 the Ford programme has been responsible for saving over 2500 vehicles giving incremental revenue to the repairers and keeping customers in their vehicles and their policies. As you maybe aware One Call promote the Brinklake/BTEC Gunwash System and other products. Brinklake as from Monday 22nd October until the end of January 2013 have announced some fantastic offers which you can see below. One of my bodyshops bought the D800 Machine earlier this year and not only did he save on SafetyKleen costs but he has reduced his usage of PPS Cups dramatically, his email as to how he has done this is below:

“The saving on pps is easily achieved by not using them for your activated products such as wet on wet primer, high build and clear coats, this accounts for 2 thirds of pps usage. There is a slight increase in gun wash solvent but the PPS saving easily out weighs this. Our site with your machine in saves around £3500.00 a year.” So with the savings on PPS cups alone this bodyshop is virtually covering the cost of the D800 machine in year one, obviously they will save this amount of money every year!!! If you would like a demonstration on your site or a brochure please contact neil@ocbs.co.uk or mob 07780 002518 or CLICK HERE to download.

In our Mechanical Garage Spotlight we speak to Julie at MDR Garage who are based in Ashton-under-Lyne

What is the history of the company and who founded it? The company was founded in 1997 by Mark Robinson, who ran it as a sole trader, and his girlfriend (now wife) Julia sitting at home doing the bookkeeping and invoicing. We ran from Bury Street in Mossley for a number of years, but the premises we were renting was rumoured to be going up for sale. With this in mind, we began looking for somewhere else to trade from. We were offered the chance of some land on Manchester Road, Mossley. This was a great opportunity, and meant we could build our own garage, thus giving us much more security. It was also just across the road from where we lived!!! Due to the massive costs involved in building a unit of this size, Mark was extremely apprehensive, but with a tremendous push from wife Julia, he decided to go ahead. After building the unit, business boomed, so we changed the business entity to a partnership, installed an MOT bay, employed a mechanic and the business grew stronger still, meaning we could employ another member of staff! We currently have four staff members, Mark, Julia, Jason & Gary.

What is special about your business and how does it differ from other similar businesses in your area? We consider our business to be very successful, and I feel this is due to a few simple things . . . the best customer service we can possibly offer, honesty in every single thing we do and the most qualified and knowledgeable staff we could employ. We are also very supportive of other local businesses wherever we can be. We do a lot for charities, both local, national & international. This starts close to home, sponsoring things like Kidsafe (road safety campaigns in schools) Mossley AFC and Dr. Kershaw's Hospice, and goes much further afield to as far as Sarajevo and Uganda, working very closely with the Revive a Life Church.

What are your plans for the company in the future and what outside influences may affect them? At the moment, we are happy with how things are going. We don't have any huge current plans for the very near future at the moment, except maybe one more member of staff. When an opportunity comes along, we like to be in a position where we can grab it with both hands, but until that opportunity arises.... who knows?!

What do you like about the Main Dealer Price checks that One Call carry out? We do consider our weekly One Call Price Checks to be helpful to us. As you are aware, in a garage environment, people just don't have time to call the dealers as well as the factors to price check on every single job, so having Neil calling to do that for us takes a massive weight off our shoulders. People like to have a service done using manufacturer parts, and it makes the garage look professional if they can offer that.

Are you looking for more work? If so . . . how good is your marketing?

Winning new customers is a challenge for all businesses and in these days it’s vital that Bodyshops and Garages continue to find those new customers and also ensure they keep in touch with existing customers and let them know what you can do for them. However many garages and bodyshops are not used to doing ‘marketing’. So as a gentle introduction to the things you can do to win more work, here are 15 questions that will help you confirm whether you are on top of your marketing or it may need some working on. They are simple ‘closed’ questions, so a Yes or No answer is all that’s required. However, to get the most from the exercise it may be useful to expand your answers. Suggestion; Answer the questions in brackets – and maybe ask your team the questions. 1.

Can you list the reasons your three best customers buy from you? (What are they?) (now ask yourself – is this true or have I assumed it)

2.

Can you and your team name three things that set you apart from your competition? (What are they?)

3.

Do you communicate the benefits of your product or service in all of your promotional literature, websites, letters etc.? (what are the two major benefits you provide to customers?)

4.

When you speak to a potential new customer, do you differentiate your company from your competition and immediately capture the customer’s attention? (How do you know?)

5.

Have you tested Direct Mail to attract new customers? Did you accurately measure the results? (What were the results?)

6.

Have you tried Social Media to attract new customers? Did you accurately measure the results? (What were the results?)

7.

How much time do your key team members spend improving their sales skills? (When is the next session planned?)

8.

Do you obtain and use testimonials from your best customers? (When were they last updated?)

9.

Do you have a referrals system in place? (How many did it generate last month?)

10. Do you use press releases to promote your company? (when was your last one published?) AUTOMOTIVE VISION—Issue 1, Quarter 3

Designed by www.MediaAngelus.com

11. Do you offer something of value to your website visitors in exchange for their contact details? (When was it last updated?) 12. Do you personalise your email newsletters? (How many did you send out last month?) 13. Do your team understand that the best way to sell is to ask questions? (what questions do they ask regularly?) 14. Do you communicate by mail, email and telephone on a frequent basis to your current customers to ensure they know what you have to offer? (What was the take up on the last one?) 15. Do you get feedback from all your customers on how you are doing? (what was the last thing you changed as a result of customer feedback?) You should be aware that each question you answer ‘No’ to probably means that you are losing out opportunities. Don’t worry if you answer No; just do something about it before your competitors do. Choose two of the questions and create an action plan for them. Do this every month and you will soon be ahead of your competitors. Newcoat Garage is a long established and highly respected accident repair centre based in Dukinfield, Manchester, we chat to Garry Holt about the business he has built up.

What is the history of the company and who founded it? I started with a little lock up and just never took the business seriously until 10 years ago. I purchased a garage in Droylsden which was an MOT station. I made it into a small body shop and rented the MOT station out. I was forced to sell the garage due to a CPO from Tameside Council a few years later. I couldn’t find new premises which were suitable and were within the budget I had to work with. I was in the process of building my own house at this point and decided that I would get more for my money if I found some land and built my own premises. Unfortunately the land I purchased needed a lot of work and money and the project ended up costing a lot more than originally thought. Six years down the line the garage is 98% finished. I have had to scrimp and scrape to get to where I am today. I’m not insurance approved and don’t want to be as I would find it very difficult being dictated to by some of the engineers who have never done the job and don’t know how hard it is.

How many staff did you start with and how many do you employ now? There are three members of staff and two freelance.

What is special about your business an dhow does it differ from other similar businesses in your area? We take great pride in what we do. It doesn’t matter if it’s a £500 car or a £150 car we still take great pride in our work. We can sort out pretty much anything, but if not, we always know someone who can. We always do our utmost to get the job done. We have extensive facilities: purpose built unit; Carolina jig; two paint mixing schemes; Junair Spray Booth; recovery truck; two courtesy cars; one small courtesy can; one large courtesy van; etc. We have a very good relationship with our non-accidental company, Collision Solutions, who we have dealt with for over four years now and they take as much pride in their work as we do. They will fight for you and your customer 100% of the way. AUTOMOTIVE VISION—Issue 1, Quarter 3

What is the service like from one call main dealers? One call main dealers are improving more and more. If there is a problem all you have to do is pick up the phone and ring Neil Buckley at One Call and if he can’t deal with it, he always gets someone who can. Neil is always on the ball.

What are your plans for the company in the future and what outside influences may affect them? My plans for the future are to try and highlight to the public how well we can provide them with every service they need and to try to prove to them that the insurance companies do not give them the best service and to stop bullying the customer when they ring up their insurance company say that they want to take it to their own garage. The customer needs to know that ‘insurance approved’ does not mean that they can do the best for them, it just means the approved garages have to work by the insurance companies set parameters on costing the job, which isn’t always beneficial to the customer. Due to the recession people are putting off non-essential repairs to their vehicles. They have also to take into account how much their excess is, which can be very difficult to many people when money is short. (So what do we do?): ‘answers on a postcard please’ !!!

When not working what do you enjoy doing? What little time I do have to enjoy life – I like to spend time with my family, play football, watch football, watch bike racing on Sky and do as many track days as possible both here and abroad.
