Gentle, beautiful & exciting

Hanseatic town of Rostock: Between the town‘s idyllic harbour and the towering churches in gothic brickwork style, beats the heart of a young, cosmopolitan metropolis.

Tips Shopping

A source of great delight in the towns and Baltic resorts are shopping sprees in the shop-filled streets in the old town‘s pedestrian areas, the large shopping centres, farmers‘ markets, souvenir shops or designer boutiques. The shops open Monday to Saturday between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. and usually close between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. As a general rule in Germany, shops are closed on Sundays. However, spas and resort towns enjoy an exemption to this rule and shops are allowed to open on Sundays from the end of March until October from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. The shops in towns are also allowed to open on a few selected Sundays in the year.

Credit cards

Modern cash machines accept most foreign cheque and credit cards, however, not all small shops accept credit cards.

Tipping

As a general rule, you do not have to give a tip in Germany, however, it is usual when the service has been good. Between 5 - 10 %, for example, is recommended for service in restaurants.

Currency

The EURO has been legal tender in Germany since 2002. At the time of press, 1.00 EUR = 1.44 USD, 1.00 EUR = 0.89 GBP (Dated June 2011).

Of all the places in Germany, the region with the lowest population density extends between the major cities of Berlin and Hamburg. City dwellers are soon out of the town and surrounded by a peaceful vastness and an invigorating freshness. The scenic spots are bedecked with white sandy beaches, lush meadows, richly green forests and more than 2,000 crystal-clear lakes. And even the salty, sea breeze refreshes body and spirit. Added to this, is the sheer abundance of sunshine. Nowhere else in Germany does the sun shine as much as here.

With the help of massive investments, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has evolved into one of the most modern tourist regions in Europe. Resorts, hotels, guest houses, camping sites, adventure water parks, yacht harbours and wellness temples of the highest standard have sprung up across the entire state. It all began [1] Island of Rügen: In front of the stunning chalk cliff backdrop yachtsmen find excellent wind conditions.

in Heiligendamm - the oldest seaside resort in continental Europe. Many other resorts followed suit along the Baltic Sea coast. And all of them decked out with resort architecture of an outstanding quality. Besides the delights of its nature, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also boasts a moving history. Thanks to the Hanseatic League Europe‘s first Economic Community - the seaside towns saw a fabulous period of prosperity during the Middle Ages. Gigantic, sky-high, red brick churches sprang up everywhere as a symbol of their trading power. Even after 600 years they are still amongst the tallest in the world. The medieval town centres of Stralsund and Wismar have been particularly well preserved. And it was for this reason that UNESCO declared them both to be World Heritage sites.

Tips

In a similar vein, everything revolved around a glorious expression of power in the residences and manor houses too. Princes and dukes bequeathed magnificent palaces, manor houses, parks and gardens to this federal state - hardly any other region in Europe has as many. The prima donna amongst them is Schwerin Castle. The »Neuschwanstein of the North« floats on a tiny island on Lake Schwerin.

[3]

Then, as today, the magnificent turreted building with its golden roofs is the enchanting focal point of this magical landscape. Nowadays, the royal residences and their gardens serve as an enchanting backdrop for concerts and culture. For example, the

»Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival« ranks amongst the top three major music festivals in Germany. The natural and cultural treasures of the state are best discovered by hiking, biking and boating. Far from the hectic pace and city noise, the protected paradises of nature provide plenty of space for adventures. An extensive, far-flung network of hiking and cycle paths has been constructed which connects proud Hanseatic towns and idyllic fishing villages, crystal-clear lakes and the undulating sea, fertile fields and blossoming meadows, enchanted marshes and shady forests. The countless number of lakes in the heart of the federal state are a source of delight for those cruising the waterways. In total, including the neighbouring German states of Berlin and Brandenburg, there are 5,000 of them. Most are interconnected through rivers and canals to make up the largest network of waters in Europe. Unique conditions for practically every class of boat. It doesn‘t matter whether it‘s a canoe, houseboat, yacht or sailing boat. Hobby captain‘s can even explore the waters without a boating licence. The Müritz - Germany‘s largest inland lake - is the centre of all this blue glory.

Did you already know, that ... ... a princess from Mecklenburg sat on the throne of the United Kingdom? Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz married King George III in the year 1761 and was crowned a short time later. A town in North Carolina was named »Charlotte« and a region named »MecklenburgCounty« by English settlers in honour of beloved Queen Charlotte. Furthermore, the South African flower known as Bird of Paradise was given the Latin name »strelitzia reginae«. During her reign, many a palace, country estate and park in the Queen‘s homeland was created in the English style. www.linking-stories.com

Food & drink 6

A holiday you can sink your teeth into The people of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern enthusiastically serve up what the country produces. The state‘s natural flavour enhancers come in the form of clear water, salty sea breezes, fertile fields and lush meadows. And right at the top of the menu is fresh fish, of course. Smoked over beech chippings, fried in butter, cooked in a herb stock or baked in pastry made with beer. There are just as many ways to prepare it as there are types of fish: Halibut, herring, cod and eel freshly caught from the Baltic Sea, while pike, pike-perch,

carp and whitefish populate the numerous inland lakes. Potatoes, cabbage, game along with specialities made from sea buckthorn are also typical of the North. A famous beer has been brewed on the Baltic coast for 700 years already. To a large extent, the Hanseatic towns owe their wealth to the success of this cool export which has been shipped over the whole Baltic Sea. In Rostock alone, there were as many as 300 breweries. This great brewing tradition is still continued in Rostock, Stralsund and Lübz. Dozens of

brewery inns across the state offer their own home-made barley brew. Locals and tourists celebrate the tasty, healthy dishes as part of the fish festivals, cabbage weeks and potato days. In the state, connoisseurs can find 130 top restaurants that boast a mention in international gastronomic guides. The food, served in the stylish ambiance of tasteful manor houses and magnificent palaces, is a feast for all the senses.

Sea buckthorn: »Lemon of the North« The orange-coloured Sea buckthorn fruit certainly pack a punch, they contain seven-times more Vitamin C than citrus fruit. Nowadays, a wide range of mouth-watering and body-care products made from the power berry abound. The Sanddorn Storchennest GmbH in Ludwigslust, one of Germany‘s oldest and largest suppliers, produces juices, teas, sweets and natural cosmetics from Sea buckthorn.

Naturally healthy In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Nature proves without a doubt that well-being and health most definitely exist. Nowhere else in Germany does the sun shine so untiringly as it does here. The coastal area, particularly the islands of Usedom and Rügen, boasts the highest number of sunny days in a year. And the reason why beach holidaymakers can still enjoy its warmth during the cooler times of the year is because the sea and sand reflect and intensify the light. During the summer months, the thermometer climbs up to 30 °C and even in September

Balloon flight: A lot of people think that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is best discovered from the water. But the colourful countryside is just as attractive when seen from the air, especially in spring. In a hot air balloon, visitors seem to effortlessly float across the yellow fields of rape, colourful meadows, green forests and blue lakes. And their gaze is drawn wistfully towards the distant expanse of open sea.

it still remains a pleasantly-warm 25 °C. The Baltic Sea then reaches 20 to 23 °C, the larger bathing lakes are considerably warmer still. Winters are comparatively mild with average temperatures around freezing. The sea is a dominant feature of this profusely healthy climate and the fresh sea breezes ensure the air is the cleanest in the whole of Germany. In this vast expanse of land, Nature reveals itself in its primeval form and with an abundance of water. Every fourth German lake glitters behind the 1,900 kilometre-long coastline.

Crane safari: It‘s not just tourists that flock to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Every year in the autumn and spring, up to 80,000 cranes replenish their energy levels for their long journey and that‘s just in the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft alone. The elegant frequent fliers can be observed from bird hides in several places. Excursions and lectures by the National Park Rangers promise fascinating insights and amazing views.

The gentle rivers cover many thousand kilometres and are connected by canals into one unique labyrinth. Lying in the midst of this blue splendour can be found a sea of gently undulating hills and dense forests which grow down to the shoreline. The oldest group of trees in the National Park Müritz and Jasmund were even declared a cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 2011. 3 National Parks, 7 Nature Parks, 1 Geopark and 2 biosphere reserves protect this bewitching primal nature.

Sleigh rides: When the lakes freeze over and time seems to slow down, city dwellers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern exhale stress and inhale peace. A charabanc journey through the snowy forests promises a tranquil breathing space in time. The coachman not only knows the way, but also knows the local nature. And, of course, he makes sure his guests are well-provided with warming drinks too.

Like treasure chests the towns of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern house exceptional cultural heirlooms. Cloisters, churches, royal buildings, art collections and many museums tell tales that seem right out of a storybook. The trade by sea in the alliance of the Hanseatic League and busy merchants ensured an immense upswing in the coastal towns in the late Middle Ages. During a traditional night watchman tour that takes you through the medieval alleys of the old Hanseatic and residence town, you will discover many things about the history of the towns, sometimes funny, sometimes grim but quite definitely in a class of its own. shops, cosy cafés and modern shopping temples. In between these fine restaurants and rustic pubs invite people to visit.

Monumental church towers and huge warehouses made of burnt bricks still determine their silhouettes. Merchant houses with magnificent gables, town halls with filigree spires show that the Middle Ages cannot have been quite as dark in this region as is often claimed. The historic town centres of Wismar and Stralsund are UNESCO world heritage sites.

The former residence towns surely are grand. In Güstrow, Ludwigslust and Neustrelitz you get a sense of dukes‘ glamour to this day. And above all of them resides the provincial capital of Schwerin with its fairytale castle.

Because so much success also increased greediness the town elders built powerful fortifications. The fortification of Neubrandenburg is considered to be one of the most beautiful. Richly decorated gates and an almost closed ring wall express the former wealth.

Ports, castles and parks transform into theatre and concert halls in the summer. Atmospheric productions and fiery open-air spectacles entertain the audience everywhere. The event season is crowned by the Rostock Hanse Sail. The meeting of the sailing boats and traditional tall ships is one of the largest in the world. Traditional, romantic and typically German are the Christmas markets in MecklenburgVorpommern.

A stroll in front of a fairytale backdrop From the defiant castle behemoth to the palatial castle in the midst of a romantic park landscape - nowhere else in Europe are the colourful historical jewels so closely together as in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. More than 2,000 castles, monasteries and manor houses. Protected by giant gnarled trees and entwined by thorny roses, many a one has not been awakened from its fairytale dreams until recently. The country between the rivers Elbe and Oder owes its chequered history and in part desolate balance of power to its »Deluge of parks and castles«. Time and again the dukedoms of Mecklenburg and Pommern have been ripped apart. Naturally, every regent needed his own palace along with summer residence and hunting lodge. And even some landlords got their own respectable manors. In the 19th century, numerous castles and gardens of the Grand Dukes as

well as several impressive factory owner villas have been added. The Schwerin Castle with 365 large and little towers, the richly decorated facades and golden roofs is seen as one of the most important buildings of the romantic historism in Europe. In the interior of the palace the festive throne hall, impressive social rooms and the consistent gallery of ancestors express the magnificence of the dukes. World famous landscape architects such as Peter Joseph Lenné ensured a framework which was just as pompous. And modern garden specialists gave the romantic castle park, the idyllic castle garden and the already forgotten kitchen garden new glamour for the German Federal Garden Show 2009. In addition, there is a whole court of castles and estate homes. Such as the enchanting Renaissance castle in Güstrow, the monumen-

tal Baroque castle in Ludwigslust and the neoGothic hunting lodge Granitz on the island of Rügen. Today these and other magnificent examples accommodate interesting museums and repeatedly invite to fabulous parties. Many of the former manors are regularly used as a backdrop for unforgettable concerts or are the home of beautiful hotels with firstclass restaurants and generous spa areas. From rustic to exclusive there is something for every taste and every budget.

Many of the palaces and manor houses act as a venue for the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. The classical concerts are definite highlights often combined with a picnic in the park with the palaces serving as a backdrop, and sometimes even finishing with a fireworks display.

Actively experience nature Nature lovers will feel right at home in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where all roads lead to unspoiled landscapes and often directly to the sea. And behind the Baltic Sea there is one mini mountain next to the other. Bright yellow rapeseed fields alternate with purple blooming heath. Camomile, poppy seeds and cornflowers border the fields, gnarled fruit trees, lurching fields and powerful chestnuts the avenues.

The elegant cranes treat themselves to a gala buffet every year in the bay landscape of Vorpommern. Up to 80,000 of the transcontinental migratory birds are entertained here twice a year. Rangers pilot onlookers to safe observation places. The absolute holiday highlight for many visitors is the snow-white chalk cliffs. Through the rustic beech tree forests of the Stubbnitz you scale the roof of the island of Rügen with its height of up to 118 metres. Those ascending to the top can look from above over the Baltic Sea right to the horizon. Protected nature paradises offer ample space for submerging and recharging your batteries. Holidaymakers discover the idyllic surroundings by bicycle, on horseback or by boat. Signposted paths, panoramic walking trails

and water routes lead through the region to quiet banks, old windmills and historical walls. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is also worth a visit for hikers. Above all families, senior citizens and Sunday hikers enjoy the gentle hills. The routes lead through meadows and forests, over dunes, dikes and avenues, past houses covered in reed, castles entwined with roses and sparkling lakes. The idyllic watery network offers unique conditions for almost every class of vessel. Hobby captains can explore a large part of the inland waters without a coxswain‘s licence. Devotees of the small white ball can play golf on 19 modern courses in front of unparalleled backdrops. Be it on an island, directly on the Baltic Sea or close to a romantic castle.

Pure bathing delight with a box seat Fine white sandy beaches, romantic bays, dreamy islands and crystal-clear water ensure untarnished pleasure when bathing and swimming. And the sun is also particularly friendly to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is not as hot as on the Mediterranean. The wind, surf, current and salt content are more pleasant on the Baltic Sea than on the Atlantic. And as opposed to the North Sea it does not constantly disappear as here there are no tides. No wonder that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has effectively invented bathing. And more than 200 years ago at that. No less a figure than the duke of Mecklenburg bravely went into the refreshing water in the year 1793 in Heiligendamm and established the first seaside resort of continental Europe there. Since then, many more have been added. Strung together like a pearl necklace, the seaside resorts invite you for a stroll with

their white villas, imposing sea bridges and endless boardwalks. There are perfect conditions for sailors and surfers, for example, off the coast of Warnemünde. The district is one of the most beautiful in Germany. However, you can also place the sail into the wind at many other locations along the coast or dive into the waves. And off the coast too, Germany‘s water country no. 1 with more than 2,000 crystal clear lakes offers ideal bathing in front of a scenic natural backdrop. Every third German lake is situated here. Clear water guarantees bathing fun for everyone. Because the bodies of water in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are among the cleanest in Germany. 13 state-of-the-art recreation and adventure baths as well as unique maritime museums such as the Ozeaneum and the Müritzeum -

promise fun and variety for those days when the sun in Germany‘s sunniest region is hiding for once. Spa and wellness oases in the entire state pamper holidaymakers with select spa and health programs. In elegant resorts and romantic manors guests enjoy classical spa treatments and natural Far Eastern therapies. The unspoilt nature gives vitality and is also the source of renowned cures such as brine and moor. Characteristic specialties are the treatments with Rügen‘s medicinal chalk. Very typical is of course an original Thalasso therapy. Besides fresh seawater and vitamin-packed algae, the low allergen maritime climate is also necessary for such a therapy.

The wicker beach chair is typical of Mecklenburg. Germany‘s piece of beach furniture no. 1 was invented 125 years ago in Rostock to protect people against wind and sun.

On your excursion you will get to know some of the most beautiful parks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: the castle and palace gardens of the fairytale palace in Schwerin, the baroque palace gardens in Ludwigslust, the park complex in Hohenzieritz as an example of an early landscaped garden, one of the oldest manor parks in Dammereez and which is considered a treasure of dendrology, the gardens and parks of Marihn Palace with the world‘s largest David Austin rose gardens and much more besides.

[1] Versailles of the North: Ludwigslust Palace was inspired by the French model. [2] Perfect symmetry: The extraordinary orangery nestles perfectly next to Schwerin Palace.

2nd Day: Schwerin with castle and palace gardens The first day is marked by a day of »promenading«. Once you have fortified yourself for the day, a tour of the state capital Schwerin awaits. Your tourist guide will show you the major sights, such as the highly visible cathedral with a height of 117 m, the market square with the town hall and the new palace. Schwerin Palace is the unrivalled landmark of the city, a picturesque vision nestling in the fascinating composition of castle and palace gardens. The castle gardens were created on the lake side of the palace island during the 19th century and are modelled on the Roman terrace gardens and in the style of English landscape gardens which are quite a contrast to the baroque palace gardens. These were created on the south side of the palace

[3] In the English style: The landscaped park in Hohenzieritz. [4] Elegant appearance: The »Strelitzie« (bird-of-paradise-flower) was named after Queen Charlotte from Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

in the mid-18th century and were modelled according to the French style. Free time to spend in Schwerin, return to Plau am See, overnight stay. 3rd Day: Ludwigslust and Dammereez After breakfast, you will travel to Ludwigslust to view the large 150 hectare baroque parkland of the palace in Ludwigslust. The landscaped park can be described as the

4th Day: the Mecklenburg Lakes The day begins with a tour of the flower garden in Malchow before moving on to the world‘s largest David Austin rose garden in Marihn with a display of more than 8,000 genuine English roses. Afterwards, you will travel to the summer residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The transformation of this small baroque garden, belonging to the classicist Hohenzieritz palace, into the ducal pleasure gardens during the 18th century, is a prime example of the English landscape garden, a style of garden which has barely survived in this form. Equally impressive are the palace gardens of Neustrelitz. Even today, with its sculptures, fountains, pillars and valuable old trees it is still the impressive focal point of the former palace grounds between the palace church, classicist orangery and the banks of Lake Zierker See. Return to Plau am See, overnight stay.

[5] Exotic gardens: The landscaped park in Dammereez. [6] Greek goddess: The Hebe temple in Neustrelitz.

Our suggestions for you: Short weekend trip to the Baltic Sea: Maritime 3-day trip including everything that Rostock and the Baltic coast has to offer: enthralling history, historical architecture, lively trips round the harbour, white sandy beaches and the open sea. Island highlights: 6-day tour through elegant resorts and sleeping fishing villages, along the rugged coastline and flat sandy beaches. Each one of MecklenburgVorpommern‘s islands fascinates with stunning nature and irresistible charm. Sovereign residences: 5-day tour to the state palaces of Schwerin, Güstrow and Ludwigslust, considered to be the crown jewels in the diverse palace landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

»Sanssouci of the North«, a description which is in no small part thanks to the efforts of the Royal Prussian Garden Director Peter Joseph Lenné. Afterwards you will travel on to Dammereez where you can marvel at the age of the oaks and ashes - 400 years and older - as well as other exotic specimens in one of the first manor parks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A 40-metre long tunnel system beneath 100-year old trees awaits you in the Zentrum für Mensch-Natur-Technik-Wissenschaft (Centre for Man-Nature-Technology-Science) which provides fascinating insights into the underground architecture of roots. Return to Plau am See, overnight stay.

Our offers are as interesting and varied as the holiday destination between the Baltic coast and the lake district. Whether you prefer packages or individual tours, day trips or two-week round trips - our aim is to please.

Hops, malt and grapes: 5-day trip all about the barley juice. Brewing beer has a long tradition in MecklenburgVorpommern. [8]

5th Day: Return trip The return journey will take place after breakfast.

[7] Simply heavenly: The neo-gothic castle church in Neustrelitz. [8] Marihn: A feast for the eyes.

Caspar David Friedrich: This 4-day trip will whisk you away into an artist‘s life full of enchantment and make you a little more familiar with the life of the painter.

Get there faster By car, you can easily reach your holiday destination on the coast by taking the Baltic Sea Motorway A20 from Hamburg or the A19 from Berlin. The German rail network - Die Bahn - also has numerous direct connections from many cities. Travellers from Switzerland and Southern Germany can take a car train or overnight sleeper to the North. Ferries from various Baltic countries arrive at the seaports on an hourly basis. The fastest way of getting to the Baltic Sea is by taking one of the many airlines that fly from Rostock to the Island of Usedom. If you fly directly to the large international airports of Berlin and Hamburg or Lübeck, then you can continue your journey in comfort either with a hire car or by rail. Full mobility is guaranteed locally by a well-developed public transport system.
