Shaving head for a cause Submitted photo

Mark Isabelle of Mechanicsville will be participating in the St. Baldrick’s signature head-shaving on Saturday, March 22, in Church Hill Irish Festival. He is a sixth grade student at Chickahominy Middle School and had cancer when he was 5 years old. He had leukemia and underwent chemotherapy for almost four years. Mark said, “I had to take a lot of pills and get many shots. I even had a port where a lot of my medicine went in. I hated having cancer but I love being cancer-free.” In honor of his friends and his aunt, Michele, who is battling cancer, is he going to shave his head as a fundraiser for cancer research. Mark’s goal is $500.

Global Youth Service Day Kick-Off Party set Saturday All Hanover County youth are invited to attend the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Kick-Off Party, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at the Randolph-Macon College Brock Fitness Center located at 202 Henry St. in Ashland. The purpose of the Kick-Off Party is to introduce young people and their families to service opportunities and encourage them to register for a GYSD project. In addition to meeting service project hosts and youth-serving organizations, participants can enjoy music, free food, games, activities and volunteer for onsite mini-service projects. Bennett Pienkowski, a sophomore at Patrick-Henry High School who participates in GYSD activities, said, “Service is one of the greatest ways for people to improve the world and find personal gratification. GYSD gives youth a chance to discover and understand these boons early in life. What better way to ensure a bright future than to instill up and

coming generations with the drive to help better their communities and enrich the lives around them.” GYSD is a world-wide event that mobilizes millions of children in more than 100 countries to serve their community over GYSD weekend on April 11-13. This is Hanover’s seventh year celebrating GYSD. The event is coordinated by the Hanover County Department of Community Resources and the GYSD Youth Planning Coalition and would not be possible without the support of its national and local sponsors: Youth Service America, State Farm, Randolph-Macon College, Mexico Restaurant and Brookwoods Golf Club. For more information, contact Laura Robertson, youth services specialist with the Hanover County Department of Community Resources, at larobertson@hanovercounty.gov or 804-365-4180.
