How to Enroll in Classes Apply for Admission to the College – New students should complete the online application for admission available at www.mecc.edu. If you are unable to access the online application, you may contact Enrollment Services on the first floor of Godwin Hall for an admission application form. Returning students who have not been enrolled at the College anytime during the last three years, must submit an updated application for admission to the College (online applications available at www.mecc.edu). Complete Assessment if Enrolling in a Plan/Program – If you are enrolling in a plan/program leading to a certificate or degree, you will need an assessment of your basic skills (reading, writing and math). There is no cost for this assessment, which is conducted in the MECC Testing Center in the Student Services Office in Holton Hall. Students with SAT scores of 500 or better in reading, writing, and math or ACT scores of 21 or better in English, reading, and math may submit these scores in lieu of the assessment. Students who are not enrolled in a certificate or degree plan/program are not required to take the assessment unless they are enrolling in a mathematics or English class. Apply for Financial Aid – If you are applying for financial aid, contact Financial Aid on the first floor of Godwin Hall. An application should be made at least two weeks prior to the start of your classes to allow processing of the application. Financial assistance information is available at http://www.mecc.edu. Students applying for financial aid less than two weeks prior to the start of classes will need to pay for their tuition and books and be reimbursed by financial aid later in the semester. Meet with Advisor – Meet with your advisor, who will assist you with selecting classes. Check with the Student Services Office if you do not know the name of your advisor. Enroll OnLine from your home computer or on campus – Log on to MECC OnLine at www.mecc.edu to enroll for classes. If you do not have access to the web from home, you may enroll at Enrollment Services on the first floor of Godwin Hall. How to Pay Tuition and Fees Students may pay at VCCS SIS/MECC OnLine with VISA or MasterCard. Payment in person can be made by cash, check, money order, VISA, or MasterCard at the Business Office on the first floor of Godwin Hall. Personal checks are payable to MECC for the exact amount of the tuition and fees. Payment for students receiving financial aid is automatically deducted from the student’s financial aid amount. Any balance can be paid by one of the methods above.

Important Notice

Students enrolling early: Class space will be held until January 4.

All tuition and fees must be paid by this date or you will be dropped from classes. Students enrolling on or after this date must pay tuition on day of enrollment. You may re-enroll for these dropped classes, if space is available, through the last day to add a class. For help with the enrollment process, contact Enrollment Services at 276-523-7474.

Free services to eligible students include: • tutoring • mentoring • transfer assistance • career counseling • personal counseling • cultural activities • academic skills development

(study skills, test-taking skills, etc.)

• informative seminars For more information, please contact the GAIN Program, Godwin Hall 216 or call 276-523-2400, ext. 278 or visit our website on the GAIN link of the MECC home page.

DISABILITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE An important issue for potential and current college students with disabilities is to understand the differences between disability rights laws in high school and college. In college, more responsibility is placed on the student. Check out the differences on MECC’s Disability Services website: www.mecc.edu/dept/services/disability.htm

Reading the Class Schedule ORIENTATION

Most video and web classes require some form of orientation. Orientation is used to give students important information about the course. Following are examples of the different types of orientation: Online Orientation, email instructor at (email address) between (dates) - students must send instructor an email introducing their self at some time during the dates given. The instructor will respond with the information needed for the class. On-Campus Orientation, Day, Date, Time, Room - orientation will be held on campus on the specified day, date, time, and room. If students are unable to attend orientation on the specified date and time, which varies by class, they need to contact the instructor.

Students will then utilize the videos, textbook, and Blackboard to complete the required coursework as stated in the class syllabus. These classes require students to take tests/exams in a proctored environment.

WEB CLASSES

Classes with section numbers that include a “W” are Web classes. In courses offered in this delivery format, all instruction is web-based.

COMPRESSED VIDEO

Classes with section numbers that include an “C” are Compressed Video classes. These are courses delivered via video to two or more sites. Students may be at a different location than the instructor.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Classes with section numbers that include an “X” are Independent Study classes. These are highly individualized, planned studies.

HYBRID

Classes with section numbers that include an “H” are Hybrid classes. These classes require students to attend class on-campus less often by utilizing on-line components that can be completed at home.
