A GLIMPSE ON TRADITION
UNO SGUARDO ALLA TRADIZIONE
The invention of a machine somewhat similar in its external appearance to the sun and planet wheels, which were formerly used in steam engines, and its application to clocks were possible thanks to the gifted English engineer and inventor William Strutt, who brought it to life in the early part of the 1800s.
Being fascinated by such principle of epicyclic gearing, William Strutt proceeded to design a clock based upon it, which he persuaded his closed friend William Wigston, an English machine maker, to manufacture. We were inspired by the great engineer’s immense work and in our Libra clock we tried to combine modern and innovative design with traditional mechanical clockmaking and to maintain original and basic principles of William Strutt’s skeleton epicyclic clock.
LIBRA THE EPICYCLIC SKELETON CLOCK
LIBRA L’OROLOGIO EPICICLICO SCHELETRATO
At its heart, Libra is an eight-day spring-driven pendulum clock with the epicyclic train (planetary gearing). Its motion work is based on the Ferguson Paradox, a principle where two wheels of identical diameter but slightly different tooth count are driven off the same pinion producing two different rates. Such a solution avoids the need for a 12 to 1 gear train between the hour and the minute hands.
The most remarkable feature about this timepiece is that its case is substituted with two 8mm-hardened crystal glass plates which, in this way, gain a double function. Such a decision was made in order to expose the beauty of the skeleton mechanism and to give an impression as if suspended mid-air. In order to obtain this effect, the stainless bushes were welded to the glass plates and only afterwards elaborated.
Glass, as opposed to metal, was also applied to the big ring wheel, where its 5 metal spider spokes were substituted with the 4mm-hardened smoked or satin (depending on the model) crystal. Although this material is very delicate and it required skilled knowledge to be worked, it helps to achieve an optical illusion of the clock’s lightness and minimalism.
The other striking feature of the Libra is the position of the pendulum which is made of Invar, a material that is totally unaffected by changes in temperature. Instead of hiding the main timekeeper behind the clockwork, as it is usually done in the classical clocks, the pendulum was moved to the left side.
“At first sight, you would understand that this Clock has been thought for you”
Luxury calls for the identity A superior level of elegance
We have created the exclusive Libra Square to satisfy the most exigent clock lovers’ highest expectations of Italian luxury. This timepiece has a very personal expression which evokes a strong sense of elegant sophistication. Every detail was selected with the utmost accuracy in order to leave the admirers with a feel of perfection. An ideal balance between precision and charm makes your Libra Square a room’s stylish star.
LIBRA SQUARE The crystal glass case, completely transparent, embodies minimalism, elegantly protects the clockwork and reflects the idea of the mechanism floating mid-air.
The graceful satin glass, which substitutes the spider spokes of the Big ring wheel, represents the union between the world renowned Italian art and modern technology realisation techniques.
Libra Clocks are thought and created in terms of aesthetic appeal, progressive know-how and strict precision. 24-carat gold and Rhodium plating as well as DLC coating treatments applied to the gear, entirely correspond to those criteria. 12
Constant innovations and the use of the cutting-edge systems and high-quality materials, such as Invar, used for the pendulum rod and known for its steadiness to temperature changes, are the core elements of the clock house’s vision
Italian design and Roman modern luxury, which are perceived in the hands’ beautiful curves and soft lines, are fused in a perfect harmony in order to create a unique and ingenious timepiece.
The extremely asymmetric crutch, which pushes from one side only, makes the clean lines and the mechanism’s essential features protagonist of a scene where nothing else interferes. Such precision and accuracy can only be realized by the great craftsmanship. 13
“A sportive soul that ignites your passion and emotions
A new personality of the timekeepers Refined dynamism, made in Italy
R-Design represents and catches the sportive soul of your Libra Sloped clock. This look is inspired by the performance, both external and internal. Together with its exceptional shape and the remarkable black shining colour theme, present in the basement and other distinctive details, it immortalizes the dynamics and essence of the movement. This is a style, which leaps out from every perspective.
LIBRA SLOPED The 8mm-hardened crystal glass plates with their round shape and clear transparency, chosen to highlight the essence of the movement and convey a feeling of lightness, have the double function of case and clockwork’s support.
In line with R-Design, the fascinating Graham deadbeat escapement gives a more precise and at the same time vivacious performance, which will not pass unnoticed by the true lovers of motion. The solid “Black” of the aluminium anodized base, which is inclined at 14 degrees, lends more vigour and dynamism, especially together with the captivating engraving, realized in the utmost traditions of Italian craftsmanship. 16
The hypnotising swing of the hand-polished stainless-steel bob lens fills the room with the lively tick and tock of daily life. It is possible to personalise your Libra clock by engraving the mirror-like surface of the lens.
The idea to create a winding key, which is similar to those of the first steam engines and which, at the same time, maintains the reference to the sportive line of the clock’s style, reflects our philosophy to fuse the past with the present.
The racing theme finds its echo in the Clock’s gear as well. The innovative, diamond-like coating, better known as DLC, is applied to the central Big ring wheel. This treatment, first used in 90s for the Formula1 motor races, guarantees a high level of durability and low friction. 17
