My Best Of Cobb Poor customer service, mediocre dining experiences and general rudeness seem to be par for the course sometimes, so I always enjoy catching a business or a person doing good and finding a place for them on my annual Best Of list. This year, there were quite a few that came in strong. Unfortunately, most of those were in the food category , so in an effort not to emphasize my belly, I limited the dining and food winners. As I say every year, none of these businesses pay to be in this spot, though we at Cobb Life are always open to discussing sponsorships (are you reading this Lexus, Brooks Brothers and Sony?) 1.Best Spinach: I always have an of f-beat one or two Best Ofs, but this might be a first on any Best Of list - Best Spinach. Kudos to Come and Get it restaurant located on the Church S treet Extension in Marietta. Great food all around here, but the spinach is hands down the best I’ve had. They lightly steam their baby spinach so it comes out tender and tasty. My dining companion (who will remain unnamed out of concern for his reputation) actually drank the juice in the bottom of his bowl the day I went. If you’re looking for veggies that don’ t come out of a can, stop by here for lunch. 2. Best Customer Service: Shopping for eyeglasses every five or so years is about as enjoyable as Algebra. I had to get two new pair last year . The first place I bought a pair (which shall remain nameless because of the old adage about if you can’ t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all) treated me like back-door help. The second store I visited was America’s Best, located in the East Lake Shopping Center in Marietta. The service I got was amazing. The lady who helped me walked me through the process, offered suggestions on styles and price and did not try to up-sell me. She was also downright pleasant. Here’ s the kicker: I wanted to speak to the manager to let him or her know what a great job this employee did. When I mentioned that, I discovered that the woman helping me was the manager! Thanks again Maria Burrow, general manager at America’s Best. You made my day. 3. Best Gourmet Food Store: About two years ago, this Southern boy discovered apple and cherry chutneys and, consequently, feels like a snob while discussing the sublime taste of a blend of chutney, a gourmet piece of cheese and a crisp cracker . My challenge is that finding a non-mango chutney is virtually impossi-

ble. I’ve only found one store in Cobb that carries my new culinary obsession - Harry’ s Whole Foods. Yes, the store has an abundance of gourmet items, but the chutney alone prompted me to give them this honor. And, please, please if anyone knows where I can satisfy my nonmango chutney cravings, send me an email. 4 Best Dining Service: Got to give this one to C&S Seafood located in Vinings. I finally had the opportunity to dine there in late November. The food was good. The service even better. Attentive and, as a bonus, the waiter actually knew and could recommend the cuisine, pairings and how the dish might be best served – all a lost art these days in most restaurants. 5.Best Music Store:Ken Stanton Music. Music stores are notorious places to shop. Even when I “looked” more like a musician many , many moons ago with an untucked shirt and shaggy hair, the snobbery of music store clerks could be almost too much to bear . Imagine how I feel now venturing into music stores donned in a tie and sweater vest and having a 19-year -old salesman either ignore me or try to impress me with a bit of obscure musical lingo. All that to say, there is one local music store that bucks the cliché – Ken S tanton. I bought my last guitar there five years ago and I still venture in a couple of times a year to restock on strings and picks. The staff is very cordial, very knowledgeable and actually say hello when you walk in - sweater vest or not. And, yes, they are locally owned. I hope you enjoy the Best Of your community in 2011. And if you have any suggestions, feel free to email me at mmaguire@cobblifemagazine.com Best,

Mark Wallace Maguire

mericans have had a love affair with chili for centuries. And a case can be made that it’s as American as apple pie. Contrary to popular belief, it’s unlikely that chili originated in Mexico. Other than in spots catering to tourists, chili as we know it cannot be found in that country today. Since Mexico’s indigenous populations have rarely changed their culinary customs over the centuries, San Antonio writer Charles Ramsdell concludes that the starting point for our familiar “bowl of red” was probably across the border . Research reveals that as far back as 1731, a spicy chili-like stew was concocted by women who had emigrated from the Spanish Canary Islands to the

Paradise Grill

area that is now Texas, and numerous references to chili can be found throughout U.S. history. Basic ingredients are usually meat, tomatoes, cumin, onion and garlic, but that’s just a starting point for creative chili cooks. Partisans may debate whether beans are a necessary ingredient, but that, like the “right” degree of volcanic heat, is a personal preference. We set out to find some of the best chili in the county, and found three different examples of the genre, something to please every taste.

W hen it opened in 1992, T’s Parkside served a dynamite white

3605 Sandy Plains Rd. Marietta chicken chili, one that lingered in Jeff Hurt’s memory. But T’s closed (770) 579-6226 www.paradisegrillemarietta.com and a chain eatery moved in, minus

the chicken chili. Hurt and partner Jeff Durham bought the location in 2000, reopened it as Paradise Grille, and Hurt set out to replicate the gastronomic treat. “I talked to T’s employees to find out what I could about the basic recipe, but nobody remembered it completely. I worked with a spice blending company and went through several different combinations. It was trial and error,” Hurt said. “And I think what we’re making now is as good, or better, than what T’s had.” Only boneless white chicken is used for this brew. Cannellini beans, canned and fresh jalapenos with seeds removed to mitigate the heat,

green pepper and onion are just a few of the ingredients, along with heavy cream and an absolute abundance of cheese. There are 14 different spices in the secret seasoning mix, and it’s the same blend used in Paradise’s red chili, which also is quite good. But it’s a distant second to the cheesy, zesty white chili, which is so soulgratifyingly delicious that it had me coming back for more. “I’m not a trained chef, but I’ve had plenty of restaurant experience and I’m a home cook, and I seem to have a knack for putting things together,” Hurt said. The white chicken chili is so popular that Paradise can go through 20 gallons a week, and even more in cooler weather. “People ask us for the recipe all the time, but we don’t give it out,” Hurt said with a grin.

L egions of dyed-in-the-wool chili lovers, as well as cook-off judges in

Georgia and across the country, have crowned Rocco’s chili as one of the best around. Chock full of ground beef and full of flavor without the pepper-induced scorch some cooks feel is necessary, this brew is exactly what we expect chili to be. The first thing that hits your palate is cumin, a smoky element essential to chili authenticity. Fresh onion, tomato, beef broth, a top secret spice mix and several glugs of Miller Hi Life round out the mix, yielding substantial flavor. Rocco’s owners Danny and Mindy Ciorrocco served the chili since they opened the pub in 1980. The recipe evolved from one in Mindy’s family, according to her sister, who works at the pub. After winning numerous awards for the chili, including the Georgia State Championship, and founding an annual chili cook-off at Rocco’s sanctioned by the International Chili Society, the Ciorroccos sold the busi-

ness two years ago to one of their longtime employees, Chip Olshein. The chili is a top seller year round, but in colder weather the pub can go through 90 gallons a week. Chip makes each batch himself, starting with 120 pounds of ground chuck, which he boils to remove much of the grease. After a cold water rinse, he picks through the meat to ensure no gristle or bits of bone end up in the pot. No beans go into the chili. “We have beans on the side for customers who want them, but we don’ t cook with them,” Chip said. “In competition chili, no fillers are allowed.” The chili is simmered at least three hours before it’s ready to serve by the cup, bowl or the “super bowl.” Beans, cheese and onions can be added. Customers also can have it one of several other ways” over spaghetti, on a hot dog or burger; layered and covered with corn chips, cheese, onions and jalapeños; on fries or nachos; or on loaded potato skins.

Does Wallace Barbecue take their chili seriously? By the e xpression on operations manager Scott T aylor ’s face, the answer is yes. Y ou can also tell by the orders the restaurant gets during the winter months.

or straightforward, all-American chili that is uncomplicated but satisfying, Wallace Barbecue is the place to go. Family members have been serving up barbecue at Wallace’s since the ‘60s, said co-owner Scott Taylor. But it has been only recently that the venerable eatery has had chili on the menu. “I started it last year during the cold months,” Taylor said. “I didn’t know how a barbecue place was going to do with chili, though.” So far, so good. “People are trying it and folks are taking it home in pints, quarts and gallons,” he said. Taylor, who runs the restaurant with his brother Mark, makes the chili from his grandma’s recipe. “This is what we always had at home,” he said. Ground chuck, kidney beans, onions, green and red bell peppers, cumin, chunky tomatoes and cayenne go into the chill pot, but Taylor doesn’t use oregano. Leaving it out of the mix keeps the chili more mainstream and accessible for his customers, he feels. The simplicity of the chili appeals to a broad range of tastes, and if more spice is desired, Wallace recommends a couple of dashes of hot sauce.

All Natural... All The Time

BY RYAN PECK

When East Cobb’s John Kirchner decided to try his hand at a pot of

chili as a Georgia State University student several years ago, he had a simple yet particular game plan he hoped to execute. Kirchner, who prepares meals for himself most days during the week, values flavor and quality of ingredients when preparing a cuisine. And he will be the first to proclaim one can never go wrong cooking with a little bit of heat. Or a lot. “I love how my chili is very meaty and spicy ,” said Kirchner, 30, a Cobb resident and 1999 graduate of Harrison High School. “If you like sweat dripping from your forehead when eating spicy foods, then my chili is perfect for you.” The initial bite of Kirchner ’s chili captures the

heartiness of chunky ground beef. While he appreciates and frequently enjoys lean meats, Kirchner avoids them with his chili in an ef fort to emphasize flavor. Next comes the crunch of red onion and bell pepper, with traces of kidney beans and tomato complementing the taste. Kirchner said he initially did not include onions and bell peppers, but added them over the years to enhance flavor . The final sensation is a jolt of heat — thanks to chili pepper and a healthy dose of thoroughly stirred in hot sauce — tar geting the taste buds. If you enjoy spicy dishes, the first spoonful of this chili will leave you eager to dive in for more. Just be prepared to wipe your brow and nose throughout. “I make sure I only include simple, fresh ingredients,” said Kirchner, a certified professional accountant for Wendy’s/Arby’s Group. “I don't like to use chili mixes that you buy at the grocery store because they have preservatives.” Kirchner recommends cornbread or a handful of tortilla chips when enjoying his chili, which also pairs beautifully with a seasonal ale.

“When I was younger, I would have sworn martial arts was the cure for everything,” Joe Corley confides over a cup of coffee at a diner near his dojo, Joe Corley American Karate, Tae Kwan Do & Kickboxing, in East Cobb. With a father in the military, Corely moved around often as a child. Always the new kid in school, he was an easy target for bullies. His dad taught him how to box and encouraged him to use his skills in defense when necessary. At age 16, on the verge of manhood, Corley explored karate as a way to help him develop the power to defend against adults that “fought more savagely than kids.”

“[Karate class] was a place for me to punch and kick and scream and everybody would say ‘good job’, so I was hooked,” he said. “In my personal life, it helped me relieve teenage frustration. We grew up [watching] ‘Leave it to Beaver’ and I learned later everyone’s family is not like that. I realized in the course of it you have to deal with most of your emotions — fear, frustration, exclusion — martial arts help you get through these things.” Those familiar with martial arts know that Cobb has a gem in its champion-fighting resident. His list of accomplishments is impressive, even to those who know nothing about karate. A ninth degree black belt

with over 45 years experience in the martial arts, Corley was named Official Karate Magazine’s Man of the Decade in the 70s. The three-time U.S. champion retired as the number one ranked Middle Weight contender in the world. He opened his martial arts studio at the age of 20, and has trained over 30,000 students to date. He produced and appeared in over 1,000 hours of video for ESPN and other networks as an expert analyst, commentator and host, in addition to his broadcast fights. He founded the Battle of Atlanta in 1970, which has become one of the premier martial arts tournaments in the world, with over 2,000 attendees each year. Corley’s calm, nice-guy nature doesn’t conjure the image of a fighter, until you begin to consider the origins of martial arts and think more Karate Kid and less Kill Bill. With a low, yet commanding voice, Corley possesses a gentle, zen-like prescence, but his power and strength is evident in the way he carries himself with confidence. It’s the zen and the power Corley juxtaposes in his martial arts. Corley’s style of teaching encourages mindfulness as much as the physical aspects of the discipline. “It’s not just fighting, there’s a philosophical side” he said. “People get more in touch with their body and feelings and emotions the more they train.” I test this out on a warm November evening at one of Corley’s adult kickboxing classes. I meet Corley a few minutes before class so he can go over the basic kicks and punches with me. After some repetitions hitting and kicking the air, he holds up a punching bag for me to actually throw my weight into. I give it a few tentative punches and kicks. “The louder you scream, the harder you kick,” Corley advises. I take a deep breath and on the exhale belt out a “hiya!” as I strike my leg against the punching bag. This time I could feel the adrenaline pumping, and I felt a sense of power. That boosted my confidence as I struck again and again, feeling stronger and stronger, and lighter and lighter as the weight of stress was unloaded with each kick and punch. Confidence-building is one of the attributes of learning martial arts, and the sport is especially effective in boosting the self esteem of children. Corley says it’s the impact on kids who go on to be something they may not have been after gaining confidence and leadership skills through his program is one of the things he’s most proud of. East Cobb residents Preeti and Jeff Chan take their

two children, Nicholas, 10, and Sophia, 6, to karate lessons six times a week. Nicholas suffers from asthma and doctors said building strength would help lessen the symptoms. Having seen Corley on television when he was young, Jeff was excited to learn he taught here when the family moved to Marietta. Nicholas and Sophia were enrolled, and Nicholas achieved black belt within two years. “Karate has been absolutely great for him, especially how Joe is working with the kids,” said Jeff. “Getting his black belt has been great in building confidence. The health benefit, as a parent it has been great for us. But in getting his black belt — Joe emphasize the leadership aspect of it, so what he likes to do is train them more than just the physical, the mental, to become leaders as well. Nick has always been shy because he has hearing problems so his self-confidence with speech and everything else was a concern for us. Joe develops his advanced students to lead. Once they get black belt they begin starting classes and helping younger kids. When Nick first started you wouldn’t think he would do that but now he leads the class and is a mentor. It’s a far cry from where he was. I’m really sold on Joe’s school.” In the adult classes, students are there for various reasons. Some come for a workout, some to learn self defense. A father and son find it’s a great way to bond while being active. It’s these positive aspects Corley wants to present to the world. He and several partners are poised to take martial arts fighting to the same level as wrestling or perhaps even football with a 24-hour martial arts channel. The programming would consist of tournaments, old kung fu movies, morning exercise shows like taebo with Billy Blanks and more. Corley’s mission is to use his knowledge to inspire in others the confidence, discipline and integrity that can be derived from martial arts. “When I started, karate wasn’t socially acceptable,” Corley said. But since that time, Corley has played a part in making karate a required stop on the soccer mom’s route. “Today there are 20,000 schools (martial arts) in North America that can combat negative perception on the local level in communities.”

Sophia Etheredge’s room before and af ter renovation at The Smith-Manning House.

The year 1839 was a momentous one. Many believe it was the year that Abner Doubleday invented the national pastime and it was the first year when tea from India arrived in the United Kingdom. That same year the original foundation stones were placed for Marietta’s historic Smith-Manning House. Built by Beaufort, South Carolina native Dr. Sidney Smith between 1839 and 1841, the house was originally part of a several hundred acre estate, named Rockford, which included the current sites for A. L. Burruss Elementary and Marietta High School,

as well as the residential developments of Lee’s Crossing, Rockford Commons, and Rockford Township. By the time the Greek Revival-style Sand Hills Cottage was completed in 1841, Monet, Renoir, and Tchaikovsky had been born. The property remained in the hands of the Smith family until after the Civil War, when the house changed hands several times. It was finally sold to John Manning in 1893, around the time that Thomas Edison completed the world’s first movie studio and the first electric car was built in Toronto.

Manning’s son, James T. Manning, inherited the house and lived there while he held political office as a State Representative and Senator, served as a judge on the Cobb Judicial Circuit, among numerous other important positions. The Manning heirs held onto the property until 2006. In 2009, Cobb County residents Will and Erin Etheredge purchased the property with the intention of completing a historic renovation of the home. “We kind of stumbled upon it, so I can’t say we went looking for it,” Will recalled. “It kind of found us. We had heard that it was for sale, we looked

into it, we made an of fer, and we lucked into being the new owners. It had always been a dream of ours to live in a historic home, and with the chance to do that, we jumped on it.” As part of their renovation of the structure, the Etheredge family sought to have the house protected by the National Register of Historic Places; however, the guidelines and application procedure are time-consuming and complex. For assistance with the process, they sought the expert help of Smyrna-based historic preservationist Gil Prado. “Rehabilitation is what most people think about when they think about restoration or preservation,” Prado clarified. “This allows you to keep the original structure but make all the upgrades with all the modern things like HVAC and a new kitchen. In order to receive the historic house credit, you have to rehabilitate the house to certain standards set by the Secretary of Interior for rehabilitation of historic properties.” Several elements of the estate make it appropriate for Historic Register status, including the rarity of its architectural style and the continuity of the entire property throughout its history, including the surrounding grounds and the agricultural buildings. But the role of the house in Civil War history is its most outstanding trait. “It was used as a Confederate headquarters for General Hardee,” Prado, a SCAD graduate, explained. “That is very rare, because typically Confederate headquarters were burned. When Sherman came down from the North, as the Union troops won a battle, they would typically burn or destroy a lot of buildings, especially if a building was the Confederate headquarters. It is very rare that this building served that purpose, but the house is still standing. We haven’t really found a reason why, but we do know that the building was used as a hospital after the war.”

While the home is historically significant, the Etheredge family also wants the renovated structure to be environmentally friendly. “We’re also pursuing EarthCraft House status, which is a green construction standard,” Will explained. “It’s a program by the Greater Atlanta Homebuilders and South Face Institute. EarthCraft has a list of guidelines as well. It focuses on energy efficiency, water conservation, durability, comfort, and air quality. So we’re trying to blend the historic home aspect with a more modern energy efficient standard.” A year and a half after the Etheredge family purchased the home, most of the interior work is complete and the couple has moved into the house with their children, Sophia, Zeke, and Liam. But the total renovation is far from complete. The inside of the house only represents phase one. The exterior of the house will be phase two, while the

12/23/2010

grounds and outbuildings will be addressed in phase three. “We have three kids,” Will counted. “They’re a little young now, but we expect them to jump in at some point. We might take a summer and do one building, and take another summer and do another building. They’re all water tight for now, so they’re not deteriorating. We’d like to keep them as part of the original farm complex as we like to call it.” In addition to being a family venture and learning experience for the Etheredge family, the house is also a passionate historic preservation project for them. “We feel very blessed and fortunate to be able to push this house further into the future,” Will expressed. “It’s an old house and we’re glad to be a part of the history of it. We feel very fortunate that way, to preserve a good part of Marietta history.”

The Etheredges installed a claw foot tub and walk-in shower in the master bathroom.

It’s no wonder people love the Diner with its friendly mom and pop atmosphere and offerings like the fried chicken with green tomato chutney. So, what’s the secret to the crispy scrumptiousness of that fried delicacy? It’s definitely the breading (including buttermilk, thyme and black pepper), but don’t ask Loren’s head chef hubby for details. “All of Chad’s breadings are different,” Loren said. “They’re all secret, and he doesn’ t write anything down.” Now, that’s the kind of fried chicken you can’ t keep a secret for long.

in our “best place to celebrate” category, it’s no surprise Old Mill is still a champion among our readers. Housed in an 1870 building just south of Acworth’s historic district, the restaurant’s Sunday brunch is more than just a meal. With over 30 different items to choose from, it’s a feast, and, at times, maybe a bit of a party. “We want you to come in and have fun,” said head chef Larry Epps. He, along with owner Tommy Allegood, enliven the restaurant with their huge smiles and antics at the waffle station. Many Sundays they will have specialty waffles, such as pumpkin waffles with candy corn for Halloween, or a Caribbean-themed variety, in which they joke with guests that Allegood just flew in

D

from the Bahamas to make the dish. “It’s become quite an event,” said Allegood, who is also the mayor of Acworth. “It’s entertaining. And the customers can also come in and ask me about the potholes,” he joked. Allegood claims they do have a secret recipe that makes their waffles a cut above the rest. The batter has Guatemalan and Belgian roots, made from scratch by one of their kitchen staff. In addition to the waffles, the brunch has an omelette station and an assortment of breads, desserts, pastries, soups and fruits to go along with main dishes such as crab legs, pot roast, and salmon. About 20 percent of the menu changes each week, while the staples remain constant.

he Kennesaw Avenue Historic District runs along Kennesaw Avenue from just before Maple Avenue and ending just before Atwood Drive. The Kennesaw Avenue Historic District is located in northwest Marietta less than a mile from the city’s historic square. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 as part of a much larger district called the Northwest Marietta Historic District. This National Register district includes not only the

Neighborhood

Kennesaw Avenue District but the Moon-Holland District and other historic sections of Marietta. In the 1830s Marietta was selected as the home base of the newly formed Western and Atlantic Railroad. By 1845, this railroad operated between Atlanta and Adairsville, with service to Chattanooga five years later. This increase in rail capacity led to an economic boom in Marietta, and its success was evident on Kennesaw Avenue. That evidence of success is still there today.

rediscovering Myrtle Beach

Cobb couple part of surging dining scene BY MEREDITH PRUDEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACEY EVANS AND COURTESY OF THE BRANDON AGENCY

Here in Cobb, residents anxiously anticipate their annual beach vacation to sunny Florida. But, an oft-overlooked jewel lies just to our east along the shores of South Carolina. As one might expect of a tourist centric community like Myrtle Beach, there’s plenty to do for the whole family - from awardwinning golf courses and Brookgreen Gardens to Ripley’s Aquarium and countless choices for mini golf. But, it is the area’ s burgeoning culinary scene that may surprise you. Even in the off season, when the typically vibrant beach community transforms to a sleepy coastal township, there is no shortage of tasty fare (the Cobb Life crew even got to experience a farm to table dinner in a cornfield while we were there!). Cobb native Meredith Guthrie Fusco was lured into the city’s fine dining scene when she relocated with husband Mike to join ranks at his family’s restaurant Villa Mare. The traditional Italian restaurant has been

owned by Italian immigrants Fred and Lucy Fusco since 1990, and Meredith happily takes customers’ dining orders for favorites like lobster ravioli and saltimbocca. Also noteworthy is the café Croissant’s. Its assortment of savory dinners and sweet treats will definitely please your palate. Last year Myrtle Beach kicked of f the first Coastal Uncorked Food and Wine Festival to highlight their local cuisine. The annual event features a trolley tour around Myrtle Beach where attendees can sample food from the area’s best restaurants and participate in beer, wine and spirit tastings set off by live entertainment and cooking demos. The 2nd annual festival is scheduled for May 8 - 15 this year . There’s never been a better time to discover (or rediscover) Myrtle Beach. This eclectic beach town is a little bit rat pack and a little bit family pack, but it’ s definitely packed with plenty of activities and enough appetizing dining options to cap of f any day at the beach.

Myrtle Beach’s tourist district, the Grand Strand, was first developed

in the early 1900s and has since enjoyed a consistent evolution, including major expansions in the 1930s and recent renovations to older str uctures like the Caravelle Resort. The Caravelle, located on the nor th end of the Strand, celebrated its 50 year anniversar y in 2010 following a major renovation in 2007. Today, the Grand Strand, and indeed the whole of Myr tle Beach, enjoys nostalgic scenes of days gone by — think open air arcades and campy old style gif t shops — melded with more contemporary architecture and a newly constr ucted boardwalk providing sweeping vistas of grassy dunes, white sand beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.

WINES OF WINTER Welcome to 2011.

A new year of wine discovery awaits us and while we cocoon during the long, cold days and nights of January our winter tasting and drinking patterns tend to focus on the fuller bodied, aromatic and richly textured red wines from the global vineyard. Oak-aged wines offer more structure and are not over shadowed by the more complex foods of the season. For example, during the cold winter months before going to Wheeler High School in the early morning, my wife Patti will prepare a slow cooked crock pot, a one-dish meal with beef, root vegetables, herbs and, of course a generous amount of wine to complement her signature stew. Be sure to use the same wine in the recipe as you plan to drink. It truly makes a difference! BY MICHAEL VENEZIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN GRAY

The following wines tend to be grown in warm climates where they achieve super ripeness, attain deep color and of fer round full bodied flavors.

Syrah, Shiraz and Petite Sirah

The Rhone Valley in France is known for many famous appellations. The most prominent is Chateauneuf du Pape, a complex blend that can be a bit expensive. A Cote du Rhone will be perfectly suitable for both cooking and drinking. A great value is produced by a French family named Moillard and is branded under the proprietary name of “Les Violettes.” It is packaged in a traditional bottle, which is both unique and attractive. This interesting blend of syrah, grenache, mourvedre and cinsault is fermented in stainless steel and finished in seasoned-oak barrels. Your horizons will be expanded if you seek out a Shiraz from Australia. Shiraz and Syrah are the same grape variety and the D’Arenberg family from the South Australian region of McLaren Vale produces a pure Shiraz wine called “The S tump Jump.” This wine is dark in color exhibiting a potpourri of vibrant raspberry fruit, rose petals, and a delicate licorice spice flavor . For an intense and exotic option select a petite sirah from California. This grape has

a long history in the state and produces dark-colored wines that have brambly fruit flavors with layers of vanilla beans and roasted coffee aromatics. Although the grape’s origin is shrouded in mystery, it has been planted in California for more than 130 years. Fine examples are produced by Bogle, Spellbound, and the historic Stags’ Leap Winery in the Napa Valley. My value pick of the month is called 14 Hands, produced in Washington State by Chateau Ste. Michelle. “Hot to Trot” offers an unusual blend of syrah, mourvedre — which are French grapes coming from the Rhone Valley — and merlot with a splash petit verdot, whose origins are in Bordeaux. The wine offers generous aromas of ripe berries, black plums and pitted cherries. After fermentation the wine is finished in mostly neutral French and American oak barrels which preserve the fresh fruit flavor and soften the wine’s texture. If you wish to share with me your wine discoveries, my email address is mvenezia@uniteddistinc.com.

slice of cobb by Heather Teilhet

Clutter can be a good thing I really despise clutter. Every day, I wage a battle against the junk mail, loose change, discarded jackets, receipts, business cards, stray socks and sippy cups that wind up stacked on the kitchen counter. I probably spend a couple hours every day, in five-minute increments, decluttering, all day long. Maybe I’m the psychological opposite of the featured subjects on A&E’s “Hoarders.” It gives me a genuine thrill to see bare counter space and underused cabinets. I get an adrenaline rush when boxes of stuff leave my house for Goodwill. I will trash something in half the time it takes me to evaluate whether or not I’ll need it again. That’s precisely what got me into trouble. But before I confess, I have a complaint. None of my mommymentors warned me about this one. No mention in play group. Not even a measly Facebook post. I guess everybody assumed this life lesson is so elementary, surely no one needs it spelled out. I’d hate for my mommy failures to be in vain, so all preschool mommies-to-be, please consider yourselves warned.

Preschool can mean monumental change. To be sure, there are many tender, touching and compelling reasons to be prepared for this transition. But in practical terms, one side effect we’ve experienced is that preschool means more stuff. More bags. More forms. More notes. More papers. Way more artwork. In an attempt to clear of f the counter after dinner the other evening, I sifted quickly through the junk stacked on the kitchen island. Mostly trash, except some construction paper scarecrows my twin girls had made and brought home from school a week ago. In one week those scarecrows had gone from the refrigerator, to the floor, to the playroom, back to the refrigerator, and now were in the mail stack. These scarecrows qualified as clutter. Snap decision. Scarecrows in the trash. Counter cleared. An hour later and feeling like mom-of-the-year, I sent one of the girls to the trash can to throw away her popsicle wrapper like a big girl. She came tiptoeing back, holding her trashed scarecrow by one corner, its face dripping with the remnants of the trash can. “Mommy, you don’t like it?” asked my wide-eyed (almost) three-year-old. Wow, the guilt. Mom-of-the-

year, indeed. I’d trade every orderly cabinet and clean counter in my house for the last three years if I could take away the look in her eyes. But in true three-year-old fashion, she forgave me in about 20 seconds, and ran off to play dress up in a construction hat and a tutu. So today I’m proud to be a recovering declutterer. We now cover every inch of the refrigerator with anything that our girls’ crayons have touched. When it’s finally time to rotate artwork of f to make room for more, we save each piece in a dedicated artwork drawer. One day I’ll choose a few for a wall framing project, and you can bet there’ll be a scarecrow in there. What I’ve realized is that clutter is still annoying. But if it means having threeyear-olds who feel loved, confidant, talented and proud as they grow up, I’ll bury our house and myself in their artwork. Anyone with children knows that you live in a constant state of transition. At the rate we’re going, I may be a legitimate candidate for Hoarders before we get to the first grade.
