meet the team
We are Mari-Anna Debel / Isa Lapera / Monica Prunell During 10 weeks we worked together in order to create a Ser vice for a special group of freaky people of Barcelona. We were inspired to choose this target thanks to our first tutor - Ariel Guersenzvaigand. That inspiration never left us and we were able to finish this project with a lot of passion and effor t thanks to our final tutor - Cristina Taverner.

DROIDS we are different
Droids Is a name of a ser vice for freaky people of Barcelona that we were working on. That name was chosen after making an investigation among the target and brainstorming all the names that were proposed. Resulted that the “Droids”, which is actually a name of robots from Star Wars, is best known by any geek, or how we also called them - freaky people! In a good manner of course. This service aims to connect specific groups of “Geeks” from all over the city in order to provide them with different types of information, special offers, activities, materials and as well unite them all together in one central point with a possibility to meet face to face.
The service consists of two points
WEB & APP
A website and application are used for getting information, making reservations and communication.
All activities take place in the Droids center. It contains : A bar / An outdoor amphitheatre Computer room / Screens rooms Workshop room / Shopping center Expocition
Mobility Security Entertainment
Education & Work
Youth needs In the beginning of this project we were asked to analyze a youth needs nowadays. We ended up with 7 main needs that we consider most important. Those are: - Mobility - Security - Technology - Education and Work - Independance - Socialize - Entertainment We also discovered a connection between some of them and as a result we ended up with a sort of cycle, that is clearly shown in the mood board on the left. As for eample: when we talk about security we should also think about technology as these terms are connected in everyday life! And same thing happens with technology and education, they both go together in most cases.

“Game Workshop” is a Warhammers shop
Going out or playing a games with my friends
It’s not just work, it is also a hobby

Is a fun way to entertain and it helps to de-stress I’ve always thrown a little more to the strategy. There’re games that are only for solo player with a very interesting story, I play 3 hours per day more or less I made a lot of new friends on online games and I meet some of them face to face When we meet we go out and drink
New generations accept that Video games are changing, they look like movies. They’re getting the big industries Retro Barcelona is an event dedicated to computers and consoles Nowadays, everything is online and nobody wants to meet face to face. As for us, we like to play console games with four controllers together, side by side, you can see sides of faces like that Game Industry changes. They sell you easy games so that you finish them quickly and buy new ones In Japan you can still find amusement arcades machines

You can be whomever you want, act how you want!
Playing. It’s like my second life
Game of Thrones! Just love it. Walking Dead is cool.
It’s like a drug! And I am very addicted! I spend more time playing than my husband does
After we watch one we love to discuss it while drinking a beer
I love different characters, historical, Manga, I also love some from series
Frequent game updates don’t give you a chance to finish the game and get bored
I wish one day I’ll have a wife, same passionate for series as I am
Every outfit needs a lot of time and effort Imagine, how many sleepless nights we have while crafting our outfits!
Usually I’m not playing all the time but my character is always online
A big screen is a must have!
My friends with whom I played online games inspired me.
We, cosplayers, usually have a normal life If we want to meet together we do that, we go to cafes, bars, we meet at home Find friend who will support you I believe it is art, a contemporary art and everybody has rights to be an artist.
Usually we communicated in Ventrilo We discuss future game events, like for example castle sieges Some of my friends love cosplay and role game so we meet on an open air a lot We love making photos every time we meet Try communicating on gamer forums
Everything depends of who you are surrounded with
the “GEEK” and its needs
“GEEK” Concept Definition Is a person, who is very enthusiastic and obsessed by a certain topic of interest. Actually there are a lot’s of different geeks (see next page for an explanation) In this case we chose SERIES/ COSPLAY/ VIDEOGAMES geeks as we are mostly interested in creating something new for this “freeky” group as there are very few activities available for them. All 3 go together because they have many similar touch points. First of all, all three groups can be treated as a Japanese theme as well as U.S theme. For example - An online gamer plays final fantasy game. A cosplayer as well plays it and chooses to dress like its characters on congresses. A series lover loves to watch final fantasy anime series. So they all have something in comon and they all apreciate each others hobby as well as they have similar topics to discuss. And that’s why usually we can find all 3 in the same comix/cosplay outfits/ fantasy figures, e.t.c. shops. They have too much in common.
One of our main reasons why we chose this topic is because it is not yet well observed and opened in Barcelona.
We want to investigate all the possible activities that geeks do, visit and take part in. To find out more information about that, we will start from researching geek forums and then we also plan to visit the Salon de Manga congress on 31st of October.
It is also very interesting for us to get in touch with a new creative field that is represented via costume-plays, e.t.c , and that has few possibilities to be observed, as for example during special festivals, that take place only once or twice a year. We hope to find an interesting solution to make this kind of topic more open-minded and active in Barcelona. Thus, as one of our objectives, we hope to find a way to get people out of their homes and to help the beginners overcome their fear.
WHO? We are going to study people that are “geeks”: people that are obsessed by different, “strange” interests, like for example: cosplay. We intend to analyze both sexes and different ages in order to enter deeply in this new world for us.
WHEN? Since we don’t have a lot of information about the topic we are to study, we have to make first observations, to find out when is the best time to analyze.
WHERE? First of all we are to observe internet sources, like forums and special web sites to get in touch with “geeks”. Secondly, we are to visit a “Salon de Manga” in Fira de Barcelona to feel the atmosphere of this extraordinary world, to make interviews with the real fans and to find the missing answers to our questions.
After analysing the interviews and all the material studied about our target, we came to the following conclusions: Unfortunately, there are very few places in Barcelona, where you can go and meet with teammates (gamers/series lovers/ cosplayers) and calmly discuss favorite hobby without strange views from anybody who’s near, where you can learn something new or vice versa - show your knowledge and special abilities. As well, the number of held events, dedicated to our freaks, leaves much to be desired. Due to these lacks, “Geeks“ feel themselves very uncomfortable and are forced to spend more time alone at home, playing, watching series, etc. They become more closed for society, and it doesn’t mean that this is what they want. They do communicate a lot with their own kind via different programs, forums, chats, etc. but don’t go out a lot all together. Since this kind of society is not so rare, despite the fact that they are not likely popping out, they still deserve their own community to be in touch all together and be able to know that they are not alone, and understand that being a “geek“ is a new, modern way of life.
It would be great to discuss it with someone
The Star Wars movie is great!
I wish I had someone who could help me with this cosplay outfit....
CASE 3 We’re a little crammed here ....
Would be great to go play somewhere comfortably
And the TV is very small .... can’t see anything
With a large TV and new playmates
Through this storytelling we wanted to show the daily journey of some of our users. The first one is sad because he can’t share his opinion of the serie with anybody, and wonders how good it could be having someone to talk with. The second case shows a cosplay girl that has a lack of experience in creating cool outfits. The third case shows a group of friends that love playing videogames together but they feel crammed at their homes and sad with their small TVs, so they are dreaming of a perfect place to play consolas, with a large screen. The fourth case is a warhammer fan, he is passionate about it but doesn’t have enough experience to create his own figures, and he doesn’t know anybody who could help him. And the last case is a representation of a usual situation in wich geek people meet at a bar for example and feel very uncomfortable and a bit ashamed because people that surround them give them strange glances, so they wonder of a place where they can go and stay comfortable and relax without people talking about them.
CASE 4 I don’t know which color to paint the shield of this Warhammer ...
I will look at some internet forum...
I wish I could find someone who could help me....
That girl over there is watching us ...
And we found a solution!
Service Proposal Our service aims to connect specific groups of “Geeks” from all over the city in order to provide them with different types of information, special offers, activities, materials and as well unite them all together in one central point with a possibility to meet face to face. A Central Point First of all, our service package is going to include a central point, which is a sort of a “geek” community, a meeting point. Although there are many feaky points all over Barcelona ( img 1 ), in different districts, our central point is going to be placed in the “Ttriangulo Friki” zone ( img 2 ), where most of the thematic shops are situated – near Arc de Triomphe. The center point will serve as a place where “geeks” can interact, play games, participate in workshops, watch series and many more. A place where they will be able to make new friends, learn something new and have a pleasant time. For customer convenience, we also plan to launch digital information systems in order to keep our target in touch with the main center as well as provide them with all the needs no matter where they are, at any time of the day or night.

Quim / 23 years old
Alex / 29 years old
Quim is a student of science, loves cooking and can’t live without series. His favorite ones are the Game of Thrones, Lost and Walking Dead. As these series come out once a year and are scheduled only during few months, rest of the year he’s waiting forward for them with his friends who share his interests. Sometimes they make thematic evenings, sometimes they watch their favorite series chapters again and again… They always enjoy spending time together.
Alex is a young doctor, soul of the company and a board game lover. Normally he spends his free time with his friends, going out or watching football, but every Tuesday, after his work, he rushes at breakneck speed to the Workshop shop, to meet his special fellows and play Warhammer game with them. He is also a very creative person, all the characters that he uses in his games are painted by him as well.
GOAL Because of the fact that Quim lives with his mom, he can’t invite his friends over a lot and that’s a problem for him, as he would like to see his friends more often. As well, guys always dreamed of a cozy place with a large screen that would allow them to watch their favorite TV series as if they were in cinema.
GOAL Sometimes Alex feels a bit sad that the shop is so small and there is not enough space to make big competitions as well as he always wanted to make new friends with other board players from other Warhammer shops from all over Barcelona.
Natalia / 20 years old
Erik / 21 years old
Natalia is a student of graphic design and seems to be a very active and beautiful young girl with a lot of creativity that she tries to show in her works. As for her hobby, she loves cosplay a lot and is an active participant of cosplay summits, where she always stays in the center of attention thanks to her outfit craft skills and model abilities.
Erik is just a simple guy from Barcelona, studying marketing and playing online games during his free time with a lack of social life. Well, actually he spends most of his free time playing and communicating with his friends from games but almost never goes out.
Once in a while, Erik goes out with his gamer friends to have a drink but every time when they are together almost all the topics go around their hobby and they can’t stop receiving strange glances all the time. Erik always wished to have a special place to spend more time with his friends where everybody would feel themselves proud of what they love.
While there are not enough events of that kind in Barcelona, Natalia feels sad that she can’t throw out all that positive energy and share all the knowledge she has with others.

And having enough light is a must have! We love making photos every time we meet.
Finally, there are many people who are still ashamed of their hobby and they don’t participate in these events. What would you say to someone, who hardly knows this world, to convince him/her to attend an event/conference? / It is always like that, at first you feel ashamed, but the more friends you have, who share your interest, who play with you or love manga or fantasy, the more relaxed and ok you feel about that. It takes time. Try communicating on gamer forums about big congresses and hang outs to start with.
INTERVIEW 3 Could you tell us your name and your age? / My name is Alex, I’m 24 years old What is your occupation? Or do you still study? / I work as an IT manager Where do you see yourself in 10 years? / Still working I hope! And having a family How does a normal day in your life look like? / I get up very early and go to work. I get back very late and go out with friends or stay at home watching movies and series. What do you like to do during your free time? / I love reading and watching series How does your hobby influence on your daily life? How important is it? / It doesn’t, it is a thing apart How did it all happen, your hobby? Was there some special person who dived you in this new world? / I don’t thin that somebody dived me in. I started it on my own
Do you remember how old were you when you started your new hobby? / Something like 16…. Don’t remember very well Some people like historical characters, others prefer manga or comics ones. There are many different groups, to which one would you refer yourself? / I love fantasy most, a bit of history as well. Manga – no. That’s not my thing at all. What kind of movies or series do you like? What is your favorite one? / Game of Thrones! Just love it. Walking Dead is cool. I also watched Merlin, The Tudors, Rome e.t.c. These are something from new ones. But talking about favorite…. I’m not sure. I don’t have one Do your friends share your preferences with you about series or movies? Do you organize meet-ups or marathons for watching the movies or series? / Some of my friend do, and we meet together frequently to watch new episdodes together. After we watch one we love to discuss it while drinking a beer. I wish one day I’ll have a wife, same passionate for series as I am. If you think of an ideal place to gather together with other cosplay or game /series lovers / comrades, How do you imagine it? / A quite place, where you can watch series together… A big screen is a must have! And an opportunity to drink something. It must be comfortable there otherwise well prefer staying home :) . Finally, there are many people who are still ashamed of their hobby and they don’t participate in these events. What would you say to someone, who hardly knows this world, to convince him/her to attend an event/conference? / Being ashamed of series is a normal thing only if your friends don’t like it. But actually, maybe they are lying to you so that you don’t think badly of them. I wouldn’t say that a series lover is a
geek. A movie lover like starwars- maybe. But anyway, everything depends of who you are surrounded with. If you don’t have friends that share same interests- find new ones in internet.
INTERVIEW 4 /My name is Natalia, and I am 20 years old. What is your occupation? Or do you still study? /I’m still a student Graphic Designer actually ;) Where do you see yourself in 10 years? /I am afraid to think that far yet, I live with today and don’t bother with my future. How does a normal day in your life look like? /I spend a lot of time studying, so I don’t have much free time. What do you like to do during your free time? /I prepare myself for new cosplay festivals and I love doing photo sessions How does your hobby influence on your daily life? How important is it? /It gives me inspiration as well as my daily life and studies inspire me for my hobby. Cosplay is something very thin. You can be whomever you want, act how you want! You’re like a totally different person! How did it all happen, your hobby? Was there some special person who dived you in this new world? /My friends with whom I played online games inspired me. They were doing cosplays so I decided to try it as well. Do you remember how old were you when you started your new hobby?
/ I was 15. It happened 5 years ago. Some people like historical characters, others prefer manga or comics ones. There are many different groups, to which one would you refer yourself? /I love different characters, historical, Manga, I also love some from series! One of my latest shoots was dedicated to “Walking Dead” series. Are you an active cosplayer? Do you visit other countries for the big cosplay events/ conferences? /Oh I am VERY active) Thus I only visited Russian cosplays, and I am planning to get to an international level. Where do you get the material for your cosplay outfits? Do you always choose the same theme or character or you prefer making a change each year? /All clothes – I make them myself; and all the weapons are made by my boyfriend. He is also an active cosplayer) We actually met on one of the conferences and since then we visit different ones every time there is something in Russia. Sometimes we use old outfits; sometimes we make new ones for new characters. It depends of how much time is left till the congress; every costume needs a lot of time and effort. What do you like the most of doing a cosplay? /As I already mentioned before, I love being a different person. A fantasy character with its secrets. If you think of an ideal place to gather together with other cosplay or game /series lovers / comrades, How do you imagine it? /I actually never thought about that… You see, we, cosplayers, usually have a normal life) I mean, we are normal people with our own friends and if we want to meet together we do that, we go to cafes, bars, we meet at home, doesn’t matter where. Of course if there would be some open aired space to gather in summer for example, it would be nice. To discuss news, to search for new comrades for photo sessions, even to make shows maybe. Yeah,
it should be something open air, with a podium maybe and some kind of cafeteria. Imagine, how many sleepless nights we have while crafting our outfits! We need coffee) Finally, there are many people who are still ashamed of their hobby and they don’t participate in these events. What would you say to someone, who hardly knows this world, to convince him/her to attend an event/conference? /Don’t be afraid, try to find a right company for your self with same interests. Like I found my in Games. And remember, every body is a sort of a freak inside and has no rights to judge you if you are afraid of that. Feel uncomfortable of what your friends will think about you? Find friend who will support you then! I believe it is art, a contemporary art and everybody has rights to be an artist.
INTERVIEW 5 -Could you tell us how old are you? 19 -What is your occupation? Or do you still study? I’m studing Medicine -Where do you see yourself in 10 years? -What do you like to do during your free time? ANSWER: I like to watch TV shows, movies , playing tennis . Depending on the show I like to attend concerts , theater , opera or showrooms if they try a topic that interests me . I love listening to music, it accompanies me every time : when I study while I’m practicing stports - How does your hobby influences into your daily life? How important is it? A: The music that I hear has an impact on my mood and vice versa I suppose. I usually spend at least 15 minutes each day to just listen to music .Series take me much longer and I spend more time on weekends . I have spend an entire Saturday watching episode after episode , it’s not very healthy, but a vice is a vice :) - How did it all happen? Was there some special person who dived you in this new world? ANSWER : I guess getting passionate about series ( which is STARGATE , I had not mentioned it before :) ) is up to my father, because he loves it and sometimes we tend to talk about what happens and bogus issues raised in Chapters sometimes for hours . On the other hand ,I has always liked music, but there are songs , styles or groups I know for love interest -Do you remember how old were you when you started your new hobby? ANSWER: uff .. music since always. Series and movies maybe from eleven years old. - Some people like historical characters, others prefer manga or comics ones. There are many different groups, to which one would you prefer yourself?. ANSWER: I prefer Marvel characters (comics ) and history or science fiction and fantasy ( Spiderman , Superman, Hulk , Thor , Iron Man, Optimus Prime, Van Helsing , witches , vampires , werewolves , wizards, etc. ) . Identifying myself with any of them is difficult because the girl is always like a little aloof, but Pepper of Iron Man or Lara Croft might be my favorites.
-Earlier you mentioned that you like Manga, do you know there is a Mango expo in Fira in the end of October? Are you planning to visit it? ANSWER : Yes ! I will go with my friends -And if you are going there, will you be just a viewer or you will participate . Who are you going to be dressed like? ANSWER: Probably I’ll go as a spectator as last year , and did not take cosplay, but my friends are going to wear one -How do you feel about video games and what genre do you prefer? Normally you prefer online games or offline? RESPUESTA: I prefer offline videogames -There is a range variety of ofline videogames. Which one do you prefer, which is your favorite one? A: My favorite video game is Rayman the begining. It’s great for playing in family. Also I ‘m having fun with Assasins Creed and Tomb Raider . I also like the car racing and football games . - Where do you play? Did you organize tournaments with your friends anywhere? ANSWER: I play at home with my father. I have been sometimes in a friend’s house to play with another console. I have the xbox so If I have the opportunity to play Mario Bros on the wii is great. -What do you think, is it better to meet on an open space or some bar/cafeteria,v or at home? ANSWER: Both are great , depends on what you want to do. -If you think of an ideal place to gather together with other cosplay or game/series lovers/ comrades , how do you imagine it? Insonorizado por supuesto. Y deberia tener comida. Los baños a la salida XD. ANSWER: a room with low light , sofas or beanbags scattered on a carpet floor with a projector wihich creates the image on the
entire wall and soundproof of course . And should have food too. /if a person says he prefers series or movies// - What kind of movies or series do you like? What is your favorite? ANSWER : I like sci-fi, fantasy and action movies. The series that I follow are Stargate it is basically a mix of the things that I’ve already mentioned. - Have you gone to a premiere with your cosplay? Have you attended a conference? ANSWER: I have never attended a conference of this series. - What is special about this series or movie? What makes it different? ANSWER : It’s original, it’s fun , has humor wich you can’t find in any other series . It speaks of the existence of extraterrestrial life and the ability to travel to other planets in one step arguing historically and scientifically very well, so that is really convincing. That’s what I appreciate most in a science fiction story that only you know it’s not real, you don’t have the right technology but if you have it that would be possible. Something like Journey to the Moon by Jules Verne : in his time was science fiction and now is a reality. so I like to think that science fiction today will become true someday . -Do your friends share your preferences with you about series or movies? ANSWER: NO. They prefer Korean and Japanese series. Do you organize meetups or marathons for watching the movies or series? ANSWER : Yes, we do meetups for movies marathons . This year we have done meetups for Disney movies ( there’s a lot ) and to see Star Wars .
Finally, what would you say to someone who hardly knows this world to convince him/her to attend an event / conference? One is geek in the extension he want, I mean it’s not necesary to be the most geek on the convention, or have the best cosplay, or have a library of comics, you do not even have to know the characters of the costumes of your friends . You can attend and participate in what you liked most ( if not, there is always food stands ) .I attended my first “Salón del manga” last year with my parents, the only costume I recognized was one of a boy who was Pikachu , and stayed until the end, even if you are not fond of manga stroll seeing others dressed is better than any museum or movie you’ve ever seen . There’s nothing like people who have a passion.

INTERVIEW 8 Alfonso 35 y Andreu 38 Dependientes.
Salon de Manga experience We were lucky to be able to attend this years Salon de Manga on 31st of October. It was an amazing event that explained us how freaky people of Barcelona actualy live and act. We found out a lot of important facts for futher work and as well enjoyed our time there. First of all, when we arrived to the Fira, we were surprised by the number of visitors waiting in a queue in order to enter. And the most notable thing was that nearly 80% of visitors were cosplayers. We’ve seen all kind of manga characters , as well some army style guys dressed as Call of Duty Ghosts characters, the game that came out just few days before that event. We’ve also seen famous Jessica Rabbit and gorgeous Disney princesses and Spiderman and the Craven, and all kind of characters we could ever imagine. The expo in general occupied two Fira buildings and had 4 different zones. One of them was dedicated to sports- Japan sports like karate for example and manga series or comics that are dedicated to sports as well. Second zone was dedicated for exposition, some kind of workshop zone and the main conference stage. The third one was the main one, with all the shops, main expositions and stands with the most crowd and of course Playstation and XBox consoles available for play. The last, but not the least, was a Japanese food zone with real Japan fastfood joints and a workshop, dedicated to Japanese cuisine. What we noticed from the beggining is that there were many tatamis all over the Fira complex and they were really crowded! People were taking a rest there, listening for conferences, eating or playing. Thats when we decided for sure to use them in our service. The idea of making our service full of workshops also comes from our Salon de Manga experience.
GLOBAL PROJECT II
