FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Happy days are here again with HOLI. With winter neatly tucked up in the attic, it’s time to come out of our cocoons and enjoy this spring festival. Colorful days, solemn rituals and joyous celebrations - Holi is a boisterous occasion! Draped in white, people throng the streets in large numbers and smear each other with bright hued powders, squirting colored water on passers-by, dunking friends in mud pool amidst teasing and laughter, getting intoxicated on bhang, and reveling with companions- its nostalgia at its best. Why is India still a developing country? What is stopping it from being a developed country? This particular question strikes me every time when I read something about India’s education system. I see India’s education system as a stumbling block towards its objectives of achieving inclusive growth. In India around 240 Universities controlling somewhere 5000 colleges of various courses churning out millions of graduates seeking jobs in vain due to lack of employability, communication skill and entrepreneurship quality. In many states more than 60, 00,000 students are hunting for jobs without hope due to political rivalries and lack of investments in job generating manufacturing units and companies. This is one side of the picture. On the other side, all want to become Engineers or Doctors or Computer specialists in IT or Software, which is beyond the reach of many and also all, cannot shine in such a line if not suited later on. So, to overcome disappointments in the working life clear appraisal of one’s self is necessary before pursuing a course of action. Parents still are hung up on children pursuing conventional courses in medicine and engineering streams. With a plethora of career options available today, students still feel helpless to opt for any of these as the traditional belief of non-conventional career being superior still exist. Parents don’t seem to be too convinced with a lot of career options available today. Most still feel careers in medical and engineering streams are more superior to a lot of the options available today. Our feature stories gives you a glimpse of unconvential careers which have set standards high while our piece of life sections educates you to allow your children to follow their passion. THREE THINGS I’VE LEARNT THIS ISSUE When you believe in defying the norms and doing what you want, it simply means you want to stand out in the crowd. Like Aamir Khan’s role in ‘3 Idiots’ you believe that if one chooses a career based on what one likes rather than what others are doing, you’ll invariably do well. You are also a leader and not a follower. Adults are always asking little kids what they want to be when they grow up because they’re looking for ideas.

Bollywood

Have no Communication

A

After the failure of ‘Tees Maar Khan’, Farah Khan and her hubby Shirish Kunder got so much busy with their next flick, ‘Joker’ starring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha that the husband and wife almost forget to communicate with each other. If on one hand, Farah is denying having Katrina Kaif in the item number with Sonakshi, while on the other hand, Shirish Kunder in an interview said that Kat is very much in the song. We wonder why there is so much confusion between them. Is there any professional trouble brewing between them or they are yet not sure about the film casting. Well, Kat is Akki’s lucky charm and Farah might want to produce Katrina as a surprise element. We all know the romance between Farah’s two year old son and Katrina.

RANI AND AAMIR Are shooting secretly

A

After ‘Ghulam’ and ‘Mangal Pandey’, Rani Mukherjee and Aamir Khan are again set to ablaze the silver screen together for Reema Kagti’s untitled project. In the film, Aamir will be seen in the get-up of a cop with beard on his face. The duo is secretly shooting with only few necessary people surrounding them inside an old Parsi building in the FiveGardenarea for the past one week. Aamir and Rani used to shoot when the residents of the area go to sleep. The dark and old bungalow was taken for the shooting because it would add the suspense to the entire thriller”No one’s allowed inside the set, other than Aamir and Rani, the director, and the technicians,” informs a unit member. However Rani is highly excited to work with Aamir after a long gap. She gushed, “For me it’s wonderful to work with Aamir, especially after so long! `Mangal Pandey’ wasn’t based on us. But this one is more about us”. She further adds, “Over the years Aamir and my chemistry have only got better. If you don’t believe wait for this movie”.

But at the moment it’s too early to talk about the casting of my film.” Sridevi was supposed to re-launch by her husband Boney Kapoor but things did not materialize. In the film, she will essay the role of a lady who doesn’t understand English but married to a highly educated and aristocrat man. Creative Fusion Collection

The fusion collection at Home brings to you a selection of intricately and artistically done up figures such as elephants, cock, bowls, ganpati and vases. Each of these pieces is beautiful individually as they are painted with a mixture of colors and patterns. Keeping even just one of these pieces at the corner or at the center of the table would grab the attention of the spectator and hence make a personality statement. Each piece of art is exclusive in its own way as the hues differ from piece to piece providing a graphic appeal to the eye. The color palate is a fusion of neutral as well as contrast colors with bright colorful splashes of royal gold, classic red, cobalt blue, white and emerald green, interest is also added very creatively with painted stripes, petals, leaves, geometrical figures and polka dots.

Loving Every Moment !

SPECIAL BONDING

Marriages are surely made in heaven. The story of the bonding of two souls for lifetime makes for a perfect relationship. This deep in love couple definitely has the best marriage with a marvelous compatibility level. Chaitanya and Neeta Kumar get candid about their life which allows you to know a lot more about these love birds! Saloni Gupta walks down the memory lane with them as they describe their beautiful journey of life. “Each day I love you more, today more than yesterday and less than tomorrow.” They started as friends and gradually fell in love completely and were seeing each other. Then they decided to take the relationship to the next level. Neeta and Chaitanya the owners of the exclusive furniture store, Vivanta, could not hide the excitement that life brought to them all these years. “Belonging to two different castes, Guajarati and Marwari unfolded the leading events of our marriage”, says Chaitanya with a smile. They had a typical romantic courtship period of 18 months. “We wanted to spend good quality time with each other and know the other well. It was a very special for me because… Chaitanya proposed to me for 101 times actually in cute different ways till I said a yes finally”, says Neeta with a twinkle in her eyes. “Really I can never forget that time when I had made John Abraham once propose to her on my behalf sitting outside her house with a banner of ‘I love you’…” grins Chaitanya. Marriage was like the new beginning of a new chapter of their lives. Fast forwarded eight years and they are happily married now. “We tied the knot on 27th March, 2003, our wedding day was like so special for us actually it was like a kind where so much was happening till we realized and got married”, says Neeta with a shinning smile. “The pre wedding days were far more fun filled for us. We has a gazhal night for sangeet, enthralling parties and the best part was we had all our friends come over from abroad to bless us on the big day”, says Chaitanya with a melancholy smile. Neeta who has finished her MBA and has done furniture designing says that she is a perfectionist. “I just want everything very organized and neat around me”. Chaitanya nods his head and agrees to what she says. He on the other hand is an engineering student and is more easy going man who manages the business very efficiently. When asked about their travel plans together, Chait16 TULIP MARCH 16-31, 2011

SPECIAL BONDING anya says, “We both love travelling a lot and keep planning a holiday every three months or so. Europe was where we celebrated our honeymoon”. Neeta whips up saying, “Trips actually gets us closer with good memories, laughter and joy!” Looks like they admire each other a lot… and gel very well together! “Chaitanya is a very down to earth guy and his first love are horses. One thing I adore the most in him is his calmness and peace of mind which I really need to learn from Chetu”, says Neeta with a pompous smile on her face. When Chaitanya was asked the same he said that he adored Neeta in many ways. “Ummh… she is very hard working and always passionate about her work. I love the way she maintains balance between work and home. Oh how can I forget this thing that she is a pakka cleanliness freak”, says Chaitanya with a grin.

While talking about the gifts they got from each other and cherish the most, Neeta flashes an innocent smile and says, “It was the most special message note Chetu wrote for me and gave me in a bottle”. While Chaitanya looks at her very affectionately and says, “Her coming into my life and my daughter are the most best of the best gifts I ever got from Neetu”. They share a much equaled up level of compatibility. Neeta says, “We have our own shares of fights also… it’s not always very silent out here!” and on this Chaitanya suddenly whips in and says, “How can you be married without any arguments?

If they aren’t any then surely there is a big problem”. Neeta continues saying that never soak us up with them all the day round because… by the end of the day we make up soon! Both of them are like totally opposites and also very similar. There is an equivalent temperament bond between these two. “We are pretty similar in every ways. We love our Sundays together”, says Chaitanya very excitedly. Neeta quips in and says, “Lots of similarities and differences describe us well where we share it all and try to accept each other in every sense”. “He is a typical Piscean and is very chilled out most of the times…In fact a bindass guy! I am the other way round. Being an arien I’m a bit short tempered, it’s like I am a blaze of fire and Chetu is the water thrown on it to soothe it all”, says Neetu with lots o glow on her face.

Talking about their four year old daughter, Tia, Neeta and Chaitanya say that she is a blessing in their life. We love her a lot and also confess that their lives revolve around her. “Tia actually got us very close together and we feel very blessed to have her. Both of us are totally dedicated to our adorable daughter who is now a chatterbox”, says Chaitanya with a broad smile and adds saying that the first word she said was ‘papa’. Neetu is lost in her daughter’s birth days and smiles saying that, “I actually loved the experience of being a mother and my pregnancy days were superb as Chetu treated all my mood swings very well. Tia is the happiness of our life!” Talking about the family bonding they have a very close knit family. “Both our parents are always there with us as we are living very nearby. It’s a very good rapport with both the sides and we all get along quite well with each other”, says Chaitanya with a smile. Neetu very happily says, “Playing poker is MARCH 16-31, 2011 TULIP 17

One unforgettable day in their life which they treasure forever was the birth of Tia. “She just changed our lives completely to a new one where each day and every moment is so special with her”, says Chaitanya with an adoring smile. When asked about their future plans, Chaitanya very enthusiastically says, “Trust and love is the mantra to keep our bond alive and here we are now as the most happily married couple (touchwood)”. While Neeta says, “We are looking forward to enjoy more and work little less so that we can retire soon and relish all our moments together”. They say opposites attract! This is a true statement with Neeta and Chaitanya. Where Neeta is more reserved and chooses her own friends, Chaitanya is the social one who loves to make a lot of friends and partying a lot. Together they make a perfect match bonded with love forever! They seem to a relationship like a flowing river of joy and believe in karma. We wish them a happy days and the best luck with their daughter in this beautiful journey of life! “True love is eternal so let us give it sometime.”

Vehicle of Education Yes we live in a free society but do we, ‘this generation’ kids have the liberty to study what they want. So what happens when children are forced to take up various genres of education by their parent even though they don’t like it? Deepa S K decodes the system of education that needs to be changed and allow children to follow what their hearts want them to.

om, when I grow big, I’m gonna be a painter and will paint the whole town’s road red. I don’t like their color now. His mom smiled and said, “But your father and I have decided that you will be an engineer”. Confused, he said, “Mom when I grow up what I become is my business right, how can you decide for me?” Surprised by the answer the mother replies, “We know what is better and a painter is no job” and brushed away the conversation. Alas! The mother has no clue that she has already sown the first seed of disagreement about her own son’s future and decision by disagreeing to what he wishes to do. A childish dream may be, but this was whooshed away! This episode is one of life’s most common and unavoidable situations and conversations that take place in our lives. Almost on a daily basis, the perpetual arguments, fights and disagreements happen when a child longs to do something and on the other side parent’s sketch an altogether different picture for them. Choices are the most misunderstood, misinterpreted and wrongly practiced practice of life. Children, choice and parents don’t really go hand in hand. Do they? Parents don’t understand children and vice versa, is a forever debatable talk. It’s not that parent’s are always fault. Poor souls, since the time lady fortune lays a child into the cradle of their life, they try to give only the best. The child being the flesh and blood of them becomes the very life of their lives. But, I guess, somewhere down the lane, they tend to forget at ease that their child is an individual. A person in the making, they have a dif-

ferent DNA that is in a never endless work of weaving them with thoughts and emotions that will eventually define them as unique human beings. In short, no matter how similar or different they look in comparison to their parents, they are different. And as one grows, decisions are made for them. Feelings are taught. Right and wrong is being fed into their brains. The scariest part begins when children go to school. School is a place where a child goes to transform into an educated person. But, in our culture school is a place where children are sent to transform themselves into what their family what them to be. Oh! Common, how many of us disagree to this? Yes, they need to be educated and knowledgeable but beyond that school becomes a ‘grade marathon’. I’ll confess, once upon a time I was a victim of this. In the race of gaining good grades, I never registered anything what I learnt. I was always asked, “How much did she and he get?” When I answer that, I exactly knew the next word coming out… “Why did you get so less….”. I must have been like 8 or 9 years old. How would I know what the meaning was of this big and mean word called ‘COMPETITION’ was? Sometimes I think parents go a little far too much by seeing that their kids only concentrate in their studies. No play or TV and the poor kid’s childhood itself. Corporal punishment is almost a crime, but what about the physical torture that a child takes in from home and other places. This is definitely a serious issue to address. Driven by the demon of grade/ranks, parents sort such kind of painful methods, which they call discipline to push them learn and 20 TULIP MARCH 16-31, 2011

win grades. But are they even aware, every time they do this they mar the soul, the conscience and the self confidence of the child? “Spare the rod and spoil the child”, may be the quote that would run in contrast to what I wrote. Yes, parents do need to discipline the child. Nevertheless, you also need to know when to draw the line as well. Recently, a national paper stated that the weight of a school child’s bag is weighing somewhere between 5-9 kgs. So heavy is this burden that research has proven children suffer from back problems. Is it worth for a child to carry so many burdens at such young age? This is just one side of the story, other side being, when a child shows interests in subjects which the parent’s consider not opportunistic. The clash between interests and aptitudes is like-‘the clash of the titans’. It’s a well known fact that ‘Science is well preferred than Arts”. Even to this day, engineers and doctors are churned out in lakhs from India. (No wonder there are Indians reigning in the Silicon valley and NASA! Good or bad, I keep guessing!)No offence against them, but, yes kids to get stressed and spanked when it comes to science and mathematics. There are versions of stories where parents send their kids to more than one tutorial class, one after the other and by the time the kid return home they crash. There is no break in between; all they do is study and sleep. What a life? No wonder they get stressed and develop psychological issues at an early stage. It’s both saddening and infuriating to know that the pressure of performing well reaches such unimaginable peaks that kids and youngsters feel ‘it’s enough so I’ll give up’ and take up

extreme steps like medicines and drugs. Apparently, there are medications to beat exam stress and anxiety. Some of them are given with the knowledge of the parents. Suicide attempt is the extreme of all. Our city is not new to headlines describing students taking their lives, as they cannot handle the stress from family and institution. When caught in such a situation, where do they go? When the pressure comes from both the ends, whom do they lean to? So what do the family turn into, friend or foe? These words may sound like families are to blame-Yes and No! Yes, for all the reasons that obvious. No, because even each of you reading this is helpless to competition ruling this world and time is also the biggest villain here. Take a second and think, you’re doings as a parent, is it right and worth it? You are raising a person and only hoping to provide the best. Quite understandable and agreeable, but we all must remember that as you and I have choices to make, likes and dislike, even children are a mould of all these attributes. Yes, when they are young, they don’t know what is good for them, what they are good at or what are their strengths and weaknesses. It is for the parents to observe, understand and realize what and who they are. From a child’s mouth, have mercy and do not compare. That’s the worst enemy for every kid’s morale. Every single time you do that, you are literally ripping their confidence and self esteem, tearing and breaking them into a zillion pieces. Sadly, the heart break goes unheard and unseen. Understand us, us kids! Yes, there needs to be a change in the education system, the mentality of parents. From one end the world looks like a child’s greatest ‘hell to be’ but at the same

time, with the advancement of various fields and disciplines the rainbow of opportunity has never looked so colorful and vibrant. We have sportsmen, media houses, counselors, financial experts, education professionals, directors, economists and a host of new professions opening up. Gone are the days when a child had only few options and had to choose between an engineer or doctor or accountant. Times have changed. People! Open your eyes and see! This is the best times we are living in. It is your world and it is their world as well. So shun the conventional though and let a revolution take place in your mind. We all live in the 21st century where we are being taught to be welcoming and broad minded. Kids are ten times smarter than their parents. They are all born into a technology and online era. How can you then judge and decide for them with your thought age? It definitely is a question to be asked. And is there a solution to how parents behave on what their kids want? Yes. And it’s for each parent to comprehend and act. An ancient saying goes that we are all born unique. We may be similar but we are not the same. Parent’s gasp when children compare them to their friend’s parents on various factors. And this really disturbs the parents. On a similar basis, this is what happens when parents demand and push children. Things go from bad to worse when parents force them to choose a professional stream against their likes. A career choice is a huge decision and if one is not content with it, it will be one of the biggest mistakes of their lives. Would you want your child live with such a mistake? And probably blame you for all that happened. As yourself, is all this worth at all? MARCH 16-31, 2011 TULIP 21

olors play a very important role in our lives. One festival that celebrates the true essence of color is Holi, one of the greatest and the most joyous spring festivals in India. Holi marks the beginning of spring. The festival is celebrated with a great fanfare and the traditions related to it throughout India in the Hindu community. The day before Holi is known as Holika Dahan, burning of Holika or Chhoti Holi. On the first day bonfires are lit in memory of the miraculous escape that young Prahlad made when the demon Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu, carried him into a raging fire. Holika was burnt to a cider. But Prahlad, a staunch devotee of God Vishnu, escaped without any injuries due to his unshakable faith that he would be unharmed by the power of Lord Vishnu. The next day, people amuse themselves by splashing colored water and throwing colored water powder on their friends, relatives, neighbors and even passerby. Noisy and colorful processions are taken out through the bazaars and streets. In sophisticated people it is characterized by songs, music, and floral decoration and splashing of perfumed water. Sweets and Bhaang is prepared at home, and served liberally. New corn is baked and eaten on this day for the first time in this season. People forget all enmity and embrace each other, with warmth and love, and replenish their friendship. Well, here are some real HOT SPOTS of Holi celebrations. Take a virtual tour to have the feel of real happenings over there. Let us start the journey from the places where the Holi in its present form originated by Lord Krishna.

North India Holi at Mathura, Nandagaon, Barsana and Vrindavana is celebrated with great gusto for a period of sixteen days. For, these were the places where Krishna spent most of his childhood. The state of Uttar Pradesh in the Braj region, the celebrations spans over a week or so. Each major temple, housing the idols of Krishna and Radha celebrates Holi on a different day. People throng the temples to get drenched with colored water and consider it a blessing from the God.

Western India

In Maharashtra and Gujarat, a grand procession of men soaked with colored water walks through the streets with a mock alert call that asks to care of pots of butter milk as Krishna comes in. This refers to Krishna’s habit of stealing butter and milk stored in terracotta pots from people’s homes. There is also a tradition of hanging a pot of buttermilk high up in the street. Men forming a human staircase try to break this pot and whoever succeeds is crowned the Holi king of the locality for that year.

Haryana

A human pyramid is formed to break the pot of buttermilk hung high up in the streets. The tradition of the Hindu undivided family there is that the brother’s wife beats her brother-in-law with her sari rolled up into a rope in a mock rage. All this happens in good humor and in the evening the brother-in-law brings sweetmeats for her.

Eastern India

North East

In Manipur too, Holi is extremely interesting. It is a six day festival here, commencing on the full moon day of Phalguna. The traditional and centuries old Yaosang festival of Manipur amalgamated with Holi in the in the 18th century with the introduction of Vaishnavism. In earlier times, folk dances were performed with folk songs under the moonlight. Presently they are the modern bands and fluorescent lamps. A thatched hut of hay and twigs and sticks is built and then set ablaze. The next day, boys go in groups to play gulal with the girls. Also devotees play gulal and dance in front of the temple of Krishna dressed in the traditional white and yellow turbans. On the last day of the festival, hundreds of devotees take out processions towards the main Krishna temple and various cultural activities are performed.

In Bengal, Holi is called Dol Yatra or the swing festival. Traditionally the festival is celebrated with idols of Krishna and Radha are placed on swings and devotees take turns to swing them. Women dance around the swing and sing devotional songs, as men spray colored water and powder called ‘Abeer’. However recent trends don’t see much of those traditions. People play with colored waters, powders in the morning and later take out processions on the streets with bands and faces and boodles covered with Holi colors. Orissa has also the similar traditions but they only place the idols of Jagannath in place of Krishna and Radha. This is because the famous Jagannath Temple of Puri is situated in Orissa and Jagannath; ‘The Lord of Universe’ is another name of Krishna.

Tanuweds Manu Why should you watch Tanu Weds Manu? For R Madhavan who will win your heart as a sweet lovable NRI doctor Manu who has the misfortune of falling in love with a Kanpur-girl Tanu (Kangna Ranaut) who not only rejects him as a suitor but also uses him to elope with her ruffian boyfriend. Hiding his heartbreak and disappointment behind a smile, Madhavan fits into the role of a goody goody NRI like a glove. He is hopelessly in love with Tanuja who doesn’t miss a single opportunity to hurt him. Rules, they say, are meant to be broken and that’s what Tanu’s agenda in life is - to break all rules that a middle-class family swears by. Well, an NRI coming home to find a suitable bride for him is very common in Indian society and director Anand Rai’s comedy opens with the same. He tries to be as close to reality as possible - from the backdrop, to clothes, to character artists - all bring out the element of a middle-class setup perfectly. With a marriage in the background providing a perfect place for Tanu’s second chance meeting with Manu, the movie traces the relationship between the girl and the NRI. Surely, perfect material for sentimental romances with ‘comedy ka tadka’. But there is something missing to make it a perfect romantic comedy. First, the script is punctured, then there is no chemistry between Madhavan and Kangna and if that was not enough, the narrative doesn’t flow at the desired pace - it’s slower than it should be. Though the director picked up an interesting subject, he has not 26 TULIP MARCH 16-31, 2011

Before you head for a day of fun, butter popcorns and visual treat to those tired eyes, read on our verdict on this fortnights latest movie. succeeded in executing his story effectively on screen - there are not enough laughs in the film. Whatever funny scenes are there, credit goes to the chemistry between Madhavan and Deepak Dobriyal who plays his friend Pappi. Kangana’s dialogue delivery puts you off and she lacks the spunk and spark to play the free bird that she is in the movie. In fact, Swara Bhaskar, who plays her friend Payal, holds the fort as the Bihari girl who is marrying a sardarji (Eijaz Khan) who also happens to be Manu’s best friend. Payal is impressed with Manu and even tries to drill some sense into Tanu’s head but Tanu, a rebel, doesn’t want to admit her feelings for the man who is picked by her parents. Critics won’t appreciate the plot but Madhavan fans would find enough material to enjoy the film. Music plays an important role in a wedding-based romantic comedy and the director could have got it right if he had opted for more fast-paced peppy numbers, like Saddi Galli... In the performance department, full marks go to Madhavan, Deepak and Swara. The supporting cast of K.K. Raina, Rajendra Gupta and Navni Parihar don’t have much to do, but whatever role they have, they carry it well. Jimmy Shergill as Kangana’s ruffian boyfriend is wasted, so is Ravi Kishen as his sidekick. If you are looking for a great romantic comedy, this is not the one, but watch it for Madhavan. He is convincing.

Hands and Nails!

If you haven’t felt the supple feel in your hands off late need not to worry as TULIP suggests simple and easy ways to follow to make your hands soft and smooth. Hands care Beautiful hands are an essential compliment to a women’s beauty. By taking proper care, you can make any part of the hands look beautiful. Hands are not only symbols of beauty, they are messengers of sentiments. Your hands are more noticed then the face, so you have to care for your hands as much as you care for your face & remember, hands are the busiest part of the body. They are exposed to all kinds of atmosphere, so they are the first part of the body to show the signs of ageing. It is easier to hide any part of the face using makeup but hands need time to time care. People having beautiful hands are lucky, so be thankful & take good care of them. The first step towards grooming of your hands is to keep them neat & clean. Try to use a good lotion or cream every time you wash them. Actually creams & lotions don’t soften the harder skin but they hold the moisture in them.

Nail Care Just as beautiful teeth are important for a beautiful face, beauty of hands has much to do with the nails. A woman loves to be complimented for beautiful nails. It is not important that you have very long nails, what is important is that you have beautifully filed neat nails. Nails are also composed of Keratin like hairs which are formed from Calcium. Nails which are in poor condition give an indication to poor health. So your hands care should include your nails care too. 32 TULIP MARCH 16-31, 2011

If you plan to play the host this Holi, all you need is little planning to make sure your guests and you have a rollicking time!!! GUEST LIST The first thing to remember when throwing any party is the guest list. Spread the word all around and be clear about the venue if it’s your home, farmhouse or a resort party. Ensure that all the guests know each other well. Meanwhile even you could have a gala time as to relax yourself and enjoy the fun!

DRESSCODE The best part about Holi is that you don’t have to dress up too much! It’s a festival of all bright colors but if you want a dresscode and make it mandatory you could specify your guests to dress up in that crisp cooton white dresses to add more fun. MUSIC A Holi party is incomplete without music! If you planning a traditional theme party then the dholak and folk songs will help to bring in the desi flavor Loud and live rocking music in the house with DJ and a dance floor will get everyone to the festive mood. Grooving in the Bollywood Holi numbers like ‘rang barse’, ‘Holi ke din’ and ‘do me a favour let’s play Holi’, can be a never ending episode!

DÉCOR With a lively décor you can get the guests in the fesitive spirit. Place the beautiful floral and sparkled colors all over the place with colorful water-filled pichkaris and water balloons, and also a floral tub full of rose and lily petals to add spunk to this season of playing colors. It’s a very good idea to set up a shade or a canopy and also a bonfire to follow up the traditions of Holi.

COLORS AND WATER Holi is the festival of colors but get hold to use organic ones which are skin-friendly and does not ruin your skin. To add up the colorful and safe event keep trays of dry colors like gulal in all shades on each table from where your guest can easily access them To add more fun don’t let any of your guests get away without getting wet with those water guns and colored balloon darts.

SWEETS FOOD AND BHAANG Plan your menu a week before and try to keep it very simple. No finger fries for this day and let your guests put away that china and forks for the day at a side. You could have stalls of street food like golgappa shots, aloo tikki, bhel puri, kachori, etc Holi cannot be complete without those yummy sweets and intoxicating bhang! Let the taste buds be pampered with those lip smacking gujiya’s, malpua’s, laddus and barfi’s. Bhaang laced thandai can be served in huge glasses or you could even replace these with milkshakes and lemonades as they act as good coolants. Hiring a bartender, for that bunch of young crowds holding the bottoms up with glasses of chilled wine or beer would be a great option

HOLI GIFTS If you are buying Holi gifts for all your guests go for the eco-friendly ones. Innovative packaged ones in jute and cane baskets along with things like herbal gulal, ittar, badam, pista and the traditional tesu ke phoolmake. This will be cherished by all the guests. In the end while winding up the party make sure nobody is left plain without colored faces and just remember to create a festive fun that carries through the party. Celebrate and enjoy your Holi! 34 TULIP MARCH 16-31, 2011

PETS

Jibbering Gooses

You should get at least a pair and more if you so choose. If you have chosen a breed, it is best to acquire them as goslings. It’s best for a goose to always have a mate. If it does not, you should acquire more geese or even several ducks so your bird will not get lonely and distressed. lifespan Tales abound of geese living up to 80 years of age. We have found that that 20-22 years is more likely for the average domestic goose. Heavy geese have a shorter life span.

Worming geese Geese are relatively easy to keep except for one problem, which can be avoided quite easily. Both ducks and geese can get gizzard worm but geese are far more likely to suffer from its effects and die. So always worm geese when buying or selling them. Do make sure that this is not done twice.

of Embden will eat 12 oz or more. Geese also like greens such as cauliflower trimmings, small amounts of carrots and potatoes, and bread (not more than 10% of the diet). They do have to acquire a taste for new food though; geese tend to eat what their parents ate. Be careful that geese do not get too fat. A good regime is to feed them only morning and evening and to let them graze for most of the day if they have access to clean grass.

Care

Food Large growing goslings of large strains

Health and care The cages should be clean, the water fresh, and the smell shouldn’t be too overpowering. The animals should look relatively clean, healthy, and alert. Stick your hands in the pen. If they react, whether running away or coming closer out of curiosity, this is usually a sign that they are healthy. 36 TULIP MARCH 16-31, 2011

Consider locking your geese at night and letting them out during the day. Be aware that the shelter will be a mess and you will have to do a bit of cleaning. Simply scrape up droppings with a shovel and toss them outside, away from the shelter. Supply clean hay, bedding, or straw, dump waters outside and refill them. Clean food containers if neccessary. Predators include bobcats, coyotes, dogs, and more. It is strongly advised that you do not shoot the predators, as you could accidently shoot a goose, a neighbor’s pet, or a harmless animal. Tea Tasters Tea tasters are essential to any organization which deals with tea, be it a plantation, broking house or a tea marketing company. But unlike history, tea tasting is no longer about simply tasting millions of cups of tea. It is a demanding job today where an aspirant requires developing a quick commercial sense and being in sync with consumer demands. Tasters in any organization are required to perform multiple roles. In a tea marketing company a taster would first test a tea for its quality. They would look for indicators such as quality of the liquor, the size and appearance of the tea leaf and ensure that the tea is free of defects. One of the greatest drawbacks of this industry is that it has only a handful of players and is not expanding as rapidly as some other sectors. This means limited job opportunities for aspirants. But the advantage is that the relatively small size ensures quick recognition and rapid rise.

JENNIFER KOTWAL talks to Aaliyah Bilgrami about her movies in the south, her attitude towards life and the qualities a man should possess to sweep her off her feet. Where does Jennifer come from? I’ve been born and brought up in Bombay. Studied in an all girls convent ‘Villa Theresa’ and then studied in HR College. I have always been a good student and my parents have always been supportive in whatever I do because of that. Nothing in my life was ever planned. I never thought I would be into movies or even do modelling. Tell us about your venture into modelling and acting? I entered modelling at the age of 15. My first ad campaign was toothpaste commercial. I had gone to cheer up a friend at her audition. They erratically asked me to try out and as luck would have it, I was chosen from 500 girls to do the toothpaste campaign. I’m aware many people still know me as ‘Saloni’ from the teenage TV drama “Just Mohabbat” which I did in high school. I loved to be a part of that show. Every day at shoot was a picnic. I’m glad that a south movie called ‘Jogi’ happened to me at the right time and I’m lucky I got to be a part of one of the biggest hit in the industry. What are you usually like? I enjoy being a ‘Leo’ girl, possess a wicked sense of humour which not everyone comprehends and find any kind of ‘speed’ irresistible. Be it bike, boats or cars. I have at least 6 to 8 cups of tea or coffee each day. I have been to an extravagant wedding in shorts and t shirt (Literally) and i also write poetry. The most interesting person you have met so far?

I have worked with all the top heroes in Karnataka movie industry and done ads with Mr. Shahrukh Khan and Mr. Bachchan! I also love Jayaprada Madam and wish she can play my mom in all movies. I was taken back on one of my sets. She is beautiful and one of the most graceful ladies I have ever met. What kind of role do you see yourself doing? I don’t have any kind of dream role. But my favourite actress is Sridevi and I wish I can do a role like she did in ‘Chalbaaz’ , so people can see two sides of me in one movie. The western and a very Indian side to me. How do you find Mumbai? I consider Bangalore and Mumbai to be my two most fav cities. How do you deal with rumours? By clarifying to my habitual loyal fans on Facebook and twitter (If explanation is needed). I’m very clear cut and my fans already know that I don’t belong to the ‘manipulative’ breed of actresses. What u see is what u get. The best compliment you have got? From my kiddie friends. When they say I’m fabulous and fantastic, I believe it. Kids don’t lie. The most rewarding thing about being an actress? That I can touch lives of so many people just by emoting on screen. The ability to make people laugh, cry and dance is overwhelming What are the future projects you are working on?

How difficult is it to have a true friend in cinema?

There is “Prince” (with Darshan) for release and foraying into Tamil industry by March end.

Never thought about that, I’m always myself. Whoever can handle that, can be my friend.

Are you a fitness freak?

Can actresses be friends?

Foodie all the way. I Promise.

Any homemade beauty tip you follow?

Sure. If the two are confident, secure individuals, then definitely YES. But most times, one of them fails to live up to the demands of true friendship and occasional envy may creep in. But two people who are well brought up with healthy mind frames can surely be friends. No doubt.

None.

Have you made any foes? If you have not, how come?

What is your personal style statement?

I usually do my work in Bangalore and bounce back to my home town Bombay. I don’t reside in Bangalore. Guess that’s the secret to being away from any trouble. (Laughs)

Make up products you swear by? Mac and Bobby Brown

My favourite is a beautiful saree. Is there any similarity between your real life and reel life character? The Jogi character is very similar. Pretty talkative!!! The most desirable man in India?

Anything you would like to tell your fans?

The arrogant, self-obsessed and show-off’s put me off.

“It is never too late to reinvent yourself. You can rise from the ashes of even your biggest crashes.” Good morning. Focus. Believe. Achieve. Swig some coffee. Let’s go!!!

What’s your dream guy like?

Is Bollywood Calling?

That’s a tough question but my man has to be confident, ambitious, loyal, fun loving, adoring and intelligent. He has to get along with my friends and family, who are very important to me.

Bollywood, the term is clichéd to begin with, but I always said if the role is good I would even do Spanish or a Chinese movie. Language is not a barrier for me to choose my movies.

Whoever I will date in future will be the most desirable. What turns you on in a man? A man has to be secure, confident, fun-loving and caring. And what turns you off in a man?

Dream date would be? I think it’s a deadly combination. I don’t have pre conceived notions about a perfect date.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH??? Emotionally distressed CHECK sharp rise in binge-drinking CHECK aggressive behaviour CHECK fascination for ‘size zero’ celebrities CHECK severe depression CHECK too reserved CHECK poor self-esteem CHECK celebrity worship CHECK. Does your child have all these symptoms??? Here is a lowdown on increasing teenage problems and solutions on how to curb them.

OVER OBSESSION WITH CELEBRITIES Many teens’ lives are centered on celebrity happenings and scandals. In almost every conversation adolescents have, there is some mention of a popular celebrity’s life. But why are teens so interested in celebrities? Teens want to get famous, they also want it easy, and they want it fast, with no suffering and no sacrifice. The kids want fame in Indian Idol, Dance India Dance or Chote Ustaad, where one day you’re aspiring, the next day you’re discovered. This is why most fantasize about becoming the next Kareena Kapoor not the next Abdul Kalam. Pipe dream or not, those expectations spell big trouble for the culture now and for years to come. Of course, most young people dreaming about red carpets won’t ever walk down one. But their dreams don’t come cheap either. Teenage girls who spend all their time looking at supermodels can no longer appreciate their own beauty, the beauty of an ordinary human body. Make them understand if a celebrity’s life becomes their ideal of what a human life should look like, then they never appreciate the greatness of the human lives around you, including their own.

(meaning it could be seen as addictive) were twice as likely to develop symptoms of depression during the study. Internet use seemed to have no effect on anxiety symptoms. Internet addiction disorder (IAD), or, more broadly, Internet overuse, problematic computer use or pathological computer use, is excessive computer use that interferes with daily life. These terms avoid the distracting and divisive term addiction and are not limited to any single cause. Teenagers who log at least five hours a day online are one and one half times more likely to become depressed than those who use the web moderately. Some (teens) spend more than 10 hours a day, they are really problematic users and they show signs and symptoms of addictive behavior. Surfing the net is a passive activity which reduces our brains to mush.

4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight. Kids who view violent acts are more likely to show aggressive behavior but also fear that the world is scary and that something bad will happen to them. TV characters often depict risky behaviors, such as smoking and drinking, and also reinforce gender-role and racial stereotypes. As kids get older, too much screen time can interfere with activities such as being physically active, reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family. Of course, television, in moderation, can be a good thing: Preschoolers can get help learning the alphabet on public television. They can learn about wildlife on nature shows, and parents can keep up with current events on the evening news. No doubt about it — TV can be an excellent educator and entertainer but the truth is, while TV has brought a fair amount of entertainment into our lives, it has numerous side effects. It subjects us, for example, to hours of political propaganda and consumerism brainwashing. It can thus instill fear and anxiety into us - TV, could, for example, alert us to possible dangers like viruses or natural disasters, causing unnecessary worry. And it can make us feel inadequate and worthless, too. For example, we may become unhappy that we are not as pretty, or as slim, or as rich as TV personalities, or that we are incomplete because we don’t own the latest electronic gadgets or expensive handbags being advertised. TV time, too, could affect one’s sleep patterns, which is important for good mental and emotional health. It is also a direct cause of junk food feasting and couch potato lifestyles, which in turn translate to sluggish bodies and obesity.

OVERUSE AND ABUSE OF INTERNET Internet ‘addiction’ could fuel depression in teenagers. Teenagers who show signs of being ‘addicted’ to using the internet have double the risk of getting depression, a new study says. The students whose internet use was classed as ‘pathological’

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS Parents should take action if they suspect a teen is too obsessed with themselves and becoming indifferent to school or withdrawing from the family. Turn off the television. Keep a check on their usage of internet. Teach children how to make small sacrifices. Do not buy magazines, journals or newspapers with excessive celebrity news. Encourage your children to become involved with school activities and get involved yourself when it’s appropriate Give kids responsibilities at home or suggest that they find a part time job after school or volunteer their time with others who are less fortunate. Give your teens the freedom to be self-expressive to explore the world around them; but learn to identify the difference between a harmless interest in pop culture figures and an unsound fascination with celebrities. Most importantly, set an example of high character for your kids, without judging or lecturing. The more teens respect their parents, the less likely they are to idolize stars. Fur is a luxury that has a timeless appeal no matter whether it’s fake or real. The texture of fur creates a comfortable and cozy feeling. This fur-pillow project will have your decor looking like a million bucks, and it doesn’t matter if you are a teenager or a great grandma, it will fit into most any style of decorating.

instructions 1

Cut two 15-inch squares of fur fabric. Cut the fur from the back, inserting the tip of the scissors under the backing. Cut the backing, not the fur.

2

Match the squares with the grain of the fabric going in the same direction. With the right sides together, push the fur at the edge of the squares to the inside layered squares. Pin the squares of fur together.

3 Sew a half-inch seam allowance on three sides of the pinned fur squares. 4 Sew the fourth side with a half-inch seam allowance, leaving a 10-inch opening in the middle of the seam. Back stitch both sides of the opening to prevent it from ripping while stuffing with the pillow insert. 5 Clip the bulk from all four corners of the fur pillow squares. 6 Turn the sewn fur pillow squares right side out. Using you fingers, push the corners out so they form sharp points. 7 Stuff the pillow insert into the fur-pillow cover. Work the corners of the insert into the corners of the fur-pillow cover. Add extra stuffing into the corners to better form, and fill them out. 8 Pin the opening of the fur-pillow cover closed. 9 Whip stitch the opening using the carpet thread. Whip stitching the opening closed may seem odd, but because of the bulk of the fur, it gives the best results. It will provide a sturdier closure, and the fur will camouflage the thread. 10 Comb the seams of the fur pillow to pull the fur that is caught in the seams. Fluff and pick the fur in the seams until the seams are no longer noticeable. MARCH 16-31, 2011 TULIP 45
