X™ knot

2006

Ever since the conception of the X™ knot in 2006, the X™ fence® brand has been proven worldwide. This premium wire netting offers great advantages in simple erection, strength and longevity. The smooth, unobtrusive, cold-forged X™ knot joint and one piece vertical wires provide a long lasting, binding joint. X™ fence® leads the way for ease and speed of construction, out-performing other types of fencing. X™ fence® mesh patterns have the capability to fence in livestock, horses, game animals, camelid, beavers and poultry, whilst also keeping out badgers, boar, otters and deer. It is also a strong intruder defence. Whatever your requirements, X™ fence® provides a powerful, effective, secure barrier.

X™ fence® Benefits Manufactured from highest quality primary metals only, which guarantee consistent tensile strength every time. 95% Zinc 5% Aluminium coating (known as XTRALIFE) lasts 2-3 times longer than standard galvanised wire. 24% stronger knot joint. 450mm pre-stripped both ends for ease of tying off. Great savings can be made in labour and erection time. This offers you savings over the life of the wire, that outweigh the cheaper brands. The extra benefits of Alu/Zinc XTRALIFE coated wire are that it is more ductile and more resistant to fatigue. All this and superior corrosion resistance too. Jumbo rolls available 200m, 300m and 500m in certain mesh patterns. Tension curves absorb any pressure put on the fence whilst also providing a visual aid to erection. They also allow the fence to react to climatic conditions, reducing stress to joints and fixings. One piece vertical section makes for easier, almost self supporting erection. Manufactured with a Alu/Zinc coating exceeding BS EN 10223-5 Full spec sheet on request.

Superior coating for increased longevity? The wire used in the production of X™ fence® has an improved coating which provides greater durability. Since the development of Zinc/Aluminium coated wire in 1984, various companies have used this coating to provide a longer life for their products. McVeigh Parker are also offering this XTRALIFE as standard in all their range of high tensile horse, stock and security X™ fence® fencing products. XTRALIFE wire offers superior corrosion resistance which is ideally suited to industrial and coastal areas, lasting up to four times longer than heavily galvanised wire. The traditional galvanised coating can have the tendency to be brittle and crack when tying off, whereas the XTRALIFE Zinc/Alu mixture provides a more ductile wire and will not crack when the wire is twisted, making it easier to erect. The tensile strength and coating used in the manufacturing of X™ fence® make it the wire of choice with both fencing contractors and equestrian establishments alike.

Why horse X™ fence® ? • The unique strong unobtrusive X™ knot not only provides an excellent joint, but its smooth surface also provides a safe environment for your horses. • Improved XTRALIFE coated wire offers greater longevity over traditionally galvanised wire, providing a longer, maintenance free life. • Proven tests have shown X™ knot to be 24% stronger than any other knot configuration. • More durable thanks to the elasticity of the high tensile wire. The spring like properties provide you with a fence which is not only easier to erect, but also reduces the need for ongoing maintenance. • Savings on posts thanks to the self supporting characteristics of X™ fence®, posts can be spaced up to 6 metres apart. • Security and peace of mind knowing that your animals are safely enclosed, as well as protecting them from intruders such as dogs etc. • Five sizes to choose from, all with reduced mesh sizes, greatly reducing the risk of injury or hoof entrapment. Ultimate X™ fence® is recommended for where foals may be present. • X™ fence® is unlike traditional stock fence, the vertical wires are continuous from top to bottom, this single vertical wire dissipates any pressure on the fence providing a very strong resilient fence line. • Quality controlled, only primary metals are used in X™ fence®, giving you a consistent and reliable fence.

What is Predator X™ fence® ? Predator X™ fence® is the name given to any X™ fence® product with a four wrap hinge within its construction, allowing for an apron fold either at the top or bottom. The hinge allows the fence to have an apron fold either at the top or bottom of the fence, which will act as a defence to burrowing or climbing predators. The benefit of this type of fence is that there is no compromise in its overall strength and appearance. Erection becomes a lot easier with a saving in both time and labour as there is no need for two separate fences to be erected and joined together. Erecting the fence to the correct tension becomes easier with the two-piece netting, as the vertical section can be strained up allowing the apron section to simply unfold. Prevent, exclude and contain · Otter predation · Protection of fisheries · Re-direct badgers · Exclude foxes · Protect highways · Contain wild animals Predator X™ fence® has the answer. We are able to create a range of mesh patterns, heights and designs to suit a number of applications. Already successful are our badger, poultry and otter predator range. If you have a specific requirement why not discuss with our knowledgeable team. Spot your predator!

10 Otter

Why Predator Otter X™ fence®? The otter is classed as a European protected species and holds the highest level of protection available. This legislation makes it an offence to kill or injure an otter or attempt to do so, to damage or destroy their resting or breeding places or obstruct access to them. Since otters have become an issue fencing them in and out has been a challenge. Electric fencing has been used to good advantage; however this requires monitoring and regular maintenance. Chain link has been the wire of choice due to its finer mesh but can be costly and labour intensive. Hinge jointed wire netting has been manufactured and used, however the hinge joint can be forced apart which enables access. Otter X™ fence® has been trialled and has proven successful in many projects so far. The trials have shown that the X™ fence® configuration and mesh aperture to be the most suitable for otter exclusion. This, coupled with our predator X™ fence® design means we are confident that this product will not only keep your predators out but will also look good and last for many years to come.

11

This predator otter X™ fenceŽ has been designed to protect inland fisheries and facilitate highway exclusion. This type of fence is produced to a very high specification, which makes it particularly suitable for commercial and government sectors. Shorter heights and lighter gauges, coupled with electric fencing can be more cost effective for private enterprises. Choosing the right specification Firstly assess what type of fence you require: 1. Solely to exclude otters. 2. Exclude otters and badgers. 3. Exclude otters plus livestock. 4. Exclude otters, livestock and the public. 5. Exclude otters and dissuade mink by use of electric lines. 6. Protect otter and direct them away from causes of danger such as highways. Once you have highlighted the type of fence, we can then advise you on the most suitable product.

14 Badger

Why Predator Badger X™ fence®? Possibly the strongest wire netting on the market, the conception of the X™ knot has given wire netting a new added strength. This proven 24% stronger knot makes it the ideal fence of choice when it comes to containing the aggressive and persistent nature of badgers. The Alu/zinc (XTRALIFE) coating provides an effective barrier against premature corrosion especially as the wire needs to be buried underground. McVeigh Parker stock Badger X™ fence® the one piece vertical wire netting in two sizes as listed, which since the conception of the X™ fence® have been used successfully on many major projects. This one piece Badger X™ fence® makes an almost impenetrable barrier mat when used on embankment protection. Also available in the same mesh pattern is the Predator Badger X™ fence® with its hinged apron fold. This type of fence would suit projects where regular badger activity occurs and the ground is softer. Predator Badger X™ fence® offers the maximum defence. This product is available in standard patterns as listed. We can also manufacture taller or smaller mesh netting for more specific environmentally sensitive or higher exclusion projects.

15

Recommended burying depths Min 30cm in hard ground or areas of minimal activity. Min 45cm angled towards the badger’s entry where regular activity takes place. Badger and Otter exclusion fencing combination Where there is a need to direct otters and badgers from areas of harm such as infrastructure projects, highways or fisheries, Otter Predator X™ fence® should be used. For the ultimate exclusion especially in softer ground a taller Otter Predator X™ fence® of 2.4m high is recommended with 26 lines creating a thinner mesh pattern, this can then be dug deeper and angled slightly in the ground to deter badgers from burrowing. Testimonials for Badger X™ fence® Badger fencing for numerous highways projects. Relocation areas for many construction companies. Golf club green protection in the midlands. Railway exclusion in Gloucestershire. Ring fencing estate in France. Bio security fencing against TB for Harper Adams University. Protection of sites of archeological interest in Lincolnshire.

18 Boar

Why Predator Boar X™ fence®? fter an absence of three hundred years, wild boar are now roaming freely in parts of the , and breeding successfully. This high tensile wire has the strength to both contain captive boar and exclude feral. Predator oar X™ fence® can be used for the following • Prevent feral boar from crossing thoroughfares such as roads and railways. • eep farmed and captive boar contained. • Prevent male boar from contact with outdoor domestic and rare breed pigs. Wild boar can be destructive and capable of breaching stock, rabbit, deer and game pen fences. This creates a risk of predation to game and poultry, whilst also decimating crops. specialised fencing is required to control these animals and with this in mind Predator oar X™ fence® has been designed. The tensile strength of the wire along with the fixed X™ knot prevent the boar from destroying the fence and gaining entry.

20 Poultry

Why Predator Poultry X™ fence®? With the EU ban on battery and caged poultry there has been a significant rise in free range and organic egg production. This comes with its own issues, fencing in poultry whilst also protecting them from predators. With the increase in free range units there is a demand for a strong reliable poultry fence that is secure enough for chickens whilst effectively protecting them from predators. Good fences make good neighbours, whilst also making good business sense without the depredation of the fox which would eat into your profits and efforts. A good poultry fence will also dissuade any dogs, feral cats and badgers. Fencing is also required to direct the birds to fresh pasture, which can be a lower height and lighter grade. McVeigh Parker can supply the traditional hexagonal chicken netting for the more domestic low density units to the larger poultry enterprises that require maintenance free longevity and security that only the superior Poultry X™ fence® can offer.

21

Plan your fence Three specifications to choose from: 1. External or perimeter fencing to keep out predators. 2. Internal or pasture control fencing to restrict the movement of chickens to certain areas. 3. Simple domestic compound. Wire of choice Advanced - The smaller mesh pattern will retain poultry, the hinge apron at the top of the fence will prevent foxes jumping whilst the base is buried, this should prevent other predators such as badgers creating holes for foxes to enter. The added height will deter other would be intruders. This taller Poultry Predator X™ fenceŽ is the preferred choice for external perimeters, offering a higher degree of security and durability. This design is also available in the cheaper larger 7.5cm vertical wire mesh spacing. Basic & Medium - Offers a more cost effective solution, that may require electric fence reinforcement. Hexagonal Wire Netting- Also stocked for a budget fencing option.

Deer X™ fence® – the ultimate in deer management Deer fencing, when properly planned for, constructed and maintained, can be an effective way of controlling deer and allowing different land uses to coexist in close proximity. It also helps to protect public safety. X™ fence® Deer is the ultimate in deer management. · Its proven 24% stronger X™ knot provides an unmovable, non abrasive joint. · The alu/zinc coating (XTRALIFE) increases the life of the fence up to four times further than traditional galvanised wire. · Only primary metals are used in the wire, this guarantees consistent high tensile strengths on every line. · The one piece vertical wire makes this fence almost self supporting, which means less posts are needed when installing. The latest figures estimate there are currently over two million deer in the UK and over three hundred deer farms and estates. There are six deer species that you might stumble across in our parks, estates and in the wild; however only two of these species are truly native – red and roe deer. The other four species have made their way into the countryside through deliberate release or have escaped from parks. McVeigh Parker can supply a wire fence to contain or exclude the right species of deer.

30 Deer

The height of a fence should be determined by how high the deer can be expected to jump. See recommended heights and mesh sizes below for the six species of deer that can be found in the UK.

Muntjac Minimum fence height 1.5m Maximum mesh size: 75mm x 75mm Product code: F2410 XHT15-158-7.5 This deer fence should be dug into the ground as Muntjac will burrow under a badly fixed fence and will jump over anything up to 1.2m in height. Habitat: Deciduous or coniferous forests, preferably with a diverse understorey. Also found in scrub and over-grown gardens in urban areas.

Fallow Minimum fence height 1.5m Maximum mesh size: 220mm x 200mm Product code: F2440 XHT13-190-15 Light weight version (used for internal division) Product code: F2441 XLHT13-190-15 Habitat: Mature broadleaf woodland with understorey, open coniferous woodland, open agricultural land.

Red Minimum fence height 1.8m Maximum mesh size: 220mm x 300mm Product code: F2444 XHT17-190-15 Habitat: England and southern Scotland, occurs in woodlands and forests but can adapt to open moor and hills.

Why Security and Civil’s X™ fence® ? Security and Civil’s X™ fence® - The superior X™ knot alternative to chain link and welded mesh, is stronger and more resilient, along with being easier to erect. X™ fence® will deliver major dividends for a wide range of security and perimeter fencing needs. The only way the mesh can be penetrated is by cutting every strand of wire individually and the small mesh spacing prevents any foothold being made. Why X™ fence® over chain link or welded mesh? · X™ fence® is made from high tensile wire. · X™ fence® is manufactured to be self supporting. · X™ fence® requires every line wire to be cut to gain access. · X™ fence® will not sag over time. · X™ fence® produced in a high tensile wire and 100 x 50mm mesh specification makes a far stronger security fence than chain link. · X™ fence® has a far better appearance when erected than chain link. · Chain link and welded mesh are easy to penetrate due to being manufactured from mild steel. · Chain link fences require extra line wire to help support the fence. · Cutting one wire of chain link allows you to unwind that wire and gain access through the fence.

Choosing the right timber? Long term fences Permanent fences are generally classified as those that are required for more than five years. When used in the forestry terms this time scale allows for trees to grow adequately out of the damage-vulnerable stage (usually 5–15 years). Permanent boundaries or simple livestock containment also require a greater strength and longevity. Temporary fences Generally those that are required for less than five years and are aimed at short-term management problems, e.g. protection of recently cut coppice, Pipelines, rented ground, etc.

Guide line recommendations only, for permanent fences. Length in metres (mtr) and top diameter in centimetres (cm).

These sizes are suitable for permanent fences in normal situations. For a softer terrain, undulating ground or multifunctional fence, larger diameters or longer lengths may be required. Post driven strainers may require a slightly longer post. Strainers should be set at 70 metre spacings or as the landscape will allow. Stakes can be adjusted to suit terrain, livestock pressure and soil conditions. Length and diameter of stakes can be adjusted to suit desired fence height and specification. The above are only guidelines, every situation differs and a site survey is recommended before installation.

43 Timber

What fencing timber to buy... Most customers spend time deciding what specification of wire to buy and what labour to use when planning their fence requirements. Whilst this tends to form the main expenditure of their project, the timber stakes are an afterthought with their cost usually the main issue prior to purchasing. Stakes are as important if not more important to the longevity of the fence and time should be taken to fully consider the options available before commencing. This very competitive market has numerous variants and knowing exactly what they are is complex. We have listed some of the options available to you with a brief description on their make up and their expected longevity, which we believe will help you avoid the disappointment of having to prematurely replace your fence. Ideally any timber in ground contact needs to have the very best form of treatment, whereas rails (out of ground contact) do not need the same degree of treatment. For strength, cleft, although rustic looking, is the strongest form of fencing as it is taken from the natural grain of the timber. However, market demands and price dictate that peeled, machine full round, half round and sawn timbers are the preferred options in both stakes and rails.

44 Timber

UC4 – User Class 4, kiln dried redwood Recommended (15 years desired life) Timber kiln dried to a moisture content of less than 28%. Only selected redwoods are used and pressure treated in accordance with the European regulations and guidelines. Supplied in regular sizes rustic cundy or machined finish. Kiln or air drying the timber prior to treatment is essential; it enables the treatment plant to monitor all aspects of the treatment process including the essential moisture content prior to the fixation process. This form of treatment will provide a desired life of 15 years in line with British standard specification. This is a more recognized form of quality, timber redwood only, selected kiln dried timber, then a controlled treatment process providing the ideal in-ground post products to give you a durable, long lasting fence. Cost comparison – 30% more than merchantable, 15 years desired life. Guaranteed to BS8417.

Creosoted pressure treated Selected suitable redwoods only, dried to less 28% then pressure creosoted, this age old process has long been the choice of many orchards and equestrian establishments. The life expectancy of these exceeds 25 years. Beware of cheaper products which use whitewood which will not offer the same service life. Supplied in standard regular sizes in cundy peeled rustic finish.

Cost comparison – 55% more than merchantable, desired life in excess of 15 years.

Chestnut timber English coppiced woodlands provide an annual source of fencing timbers. Chestnut coppiced in the winter will give the longest life, ideally sitting for a year then tar dipped; or coated in Tuffdip. However this process is laborious and costly. Supplied in quarters, halves and full rounds mixed. Chestnut tends to be sawn rather than cleft, it then can be susceptible to splitting naturally. Cost comparison – Equal to merchantable. Longevity, winter cut should give 15+ years.

N.B The life expectancy and cost comparisons is only meant as a guide. McVeigh Parker are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information contained in this publication. And therefore will not be liable for any loss or consequential loss arising out of this in anyway.

45 Timber

SC4 - Sector 4 (30 years desired life) We can offer sector 4 equivalent British standard specification on redwood timber which offers a desired service life of 30 years. This is available in both pressure creosoted or pressure treated. Pressure creosoted preservative will comply to BS EN 13991, with penetration and retention levels in accordance with the relevant provisions of BS 8417. Any other acceptable type of formulation treatment, the penetration requirements for all timber species will be in accordance with the relevant provisions in BS 8417 (30 year specification). This form of treatment is only available to order, in certain rustic cundy or sawn timber sizes. Cost comparison –250% more than merchantable, 30 years desired service life, guaranteed to BS8417 (30 year specification).

Merchantable Quality mixed species Treatment may vary, dependant on winter cut or summer cut timber and these tend to be air dried to a moisture content of between 35% to 28%, then treated. However it is important to note that the moisture content reading is formed from an average selection of the products to be treated. The mechanical strength of whitewood is half of what you would get from redwoods. A merchantable quality is a mixed species of white and redwood selected, and treated to market guidelines. Whilst every care is taken to comply with the guidelines, without the costly exercise of kiln drying it is not possible to offer a guarantee on longevity of this product. Due to market demands and competitive pressures this type of timber tends to be price sensitive and although it will suit most situations, any doubt to its longevity or application then User Class 4 or Sector 4 timber should be purchased. Ideal for pipelines, rented ground or where initial costs is priority. Cost & longevity comparison – competitive, longevity dependant on ground condition, timber species, treatment process. Variable service life.

FSC – (Forestry stewardship council) Your assurance of quality, once you have chosen your preferred timber you can be assured that all our timbers are sourced from FSC approved managed woodlands. Proof of FSC, PEFC and treatment documentation is available on request at time of ordering. Once you have chosen your selected timber then you need to select your wire… X™ fence® offers the greatest value and longevity.
