Pick up a copy of "A Lucky Life Interrupted" by Tom Brokaw today and register to join us to discuss the book.
Tails and Tales Cover2Cover Brokaw takes us through all the seasons and stages of this surprising year, the emotions, discoveries, setbacks, and Adult Bookclub: "Lucky Life struggles—times of denial, acceptance, turning points, and courage. After his diagnosis, Brokaw began to keep a Interrupted" by Tom Brokaw journal, approaching this new stage of his life in a familiar role: as a journalist, determined to learn as much as he could about his condition, to report the story, and help others facing similar battles. That journal became the basis of this wonderfully written memoir, the story of a man coming to terms with his own mortality, contemplating what means the most to him now, and reflecting on what has meant the most to him throughout his life.
Tom Brokaw has led a fortunate life, with a strong marriage and family, many friends, and a brilliant journalism career culminating in his twenty-two years as anchor of the NBC Nightly News and as bestselling author. But in the summer of 2013, when back pain led him to the doctors at the Mayo Clinic, his run of good luck was interrupted. He received shocking news: He had multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cancer. Friends had always referred to Brokaw’s “lucky star,” but as he writes in this inspiring memoir, “Turns out that star has a dimmer switch.”
What weird animal can you make? It's up to you. Come create your very own animal portrait with us at the Fairview Library! All materials will be provided.
Tails and Tales Teens: Animal Egg Carton Portraits
Pick up a copy of Saving Marty by Paul Griffin and register to join us to discuss the book and share a book related activity.
Marty is extraordinary—he thinks he’s a dog and acts like one too—and his bond with Renzo is truly one of a kind. At Tails and Tales T(w)eens Read first, the family farm seems like the perfect home for Marty, but as he approaches 350 pounds, it becomes harder for Book Club: "Saving Marty" by Renzo to convince his mom that a giant pig makes a good pet. So when Marty causes a dangerous (and expensive) Paul Griffin accident, Renzo knows Marty’s time is up. He’d do anything and everything for his best friend, but will everything be enough to save Marty?

Jacob Janowski's luck had run out―orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was the Great Depression and for Jacob the circus was both his salvation and a living hell. There he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but brutal animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this group of misfits was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.
Join the Summer Reading Program fun with this take on the “tails” portion of the Tails and Tales theme. This New York Times Best Seller had over 10 million copies in print world-wide. Set during the Great Depression, this story of friendship, adventure, and love is one you won’t forget.
Join Ms. Julie in Fairview as we make a fun pom pom cat toy for your furry feline! Register today! Limited spots are available.
