What is rice bran? Rice bran is the outer layer of the grain removed by polishing brown rice to become white rice. It is a highly nutritious product, being a rich source of energy, protein, vitamins, minerals and fibre. By comparison, rice hulls—the outer covering of the grain removed during the de-hulling process—contain a high level of fibre and have limited feed value.
Research has proven that feeding additional energy in the form of fat increases the concentration of cholesterol, fat and progesterone in the blood. Rice bran also contains up to 15 per cent protein. The amino acid profile of rice bran is well-balanced and compares favourably with other cereal bran.
Rice bran contains up to 26 per cent oil, which is a good source of highly digestible energy.
Besides offering quality energy and protein, rice bran is an excellent source of vitamins B and E, macro and trace minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants required for optimum health.
Feeding of an energy-rich ration
CopRice is located at Site 1047.
Rice bran is the outer layer of the grain removed by polishing brown rice to become white rice.
reduces the negative energy status of early lactation cows.
Nutritional quality of rice bran
Improved feed efficiency, which equates to better feed conversion, increased milk production, improved fertility and cow health.
CopRice strategically utilises rice bran, a highly nutritious by-product of rice processing, in its livestock rations.
Source of sustained energy
Limited risk of acidosis, allowing high feeding rates when necessary (e.g. early lactation).
High energy content
Increases the cow’s energy intake and reduces the impact of negative energy balance in early lactation.
Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants (e.g. gamma oryzanol)
Essential fatty acids and antioxidants have an important role in improving cow health and fertility.
Moderate levels of protein
The protein in rice bran contains a good balance of essential amino acids. The quality of protein in rice bran is generally better than that of cereal grains.
Excellent source of Vitamins E, B1 and B3
Vitamin E helps build the immune system especially prior to calving. Vitamin B1 is important for energy metabolism. Niacin reduces the incidence of metabolic diseases.
Rich source of trace minerals (e.g. manganese and zinc)
Manganese is essential for reproduction, building the immune system, bone development and strength. Zinc promotes hoof and udder health.
