Final Year Dissertation This dissertation has investigated DfD in terms of using principles and theories to aid the design process. An examination into the macro and micro detail was undertaken to test the working method of the design process. This study set out to investigate the principles based strategies of DfD as applied to the construction process. The research focused on the macro level leading to a detailed investigation of a school building and at micro level through the window detail. This study has shown that DfD is a different approach to detailing for construction; however the same principles of conventional detailing are applied. The difference with DfD is the understanding of how building is layered with different life spans and the different transformational needs of every building. In general, therefore, it seems that if every building has different transformation needs than a generic system of DfD will not benefit various types of buildings. The research suggests that the designer of the building will need to establish the transformational needs and estimate the life span of the layers before the application of the design theory can be applied to the micro level. The findings of this research also suggest that the ability to upgrade will be beneficial for a building to increase its energy usage performance through time, reduce waste flow when renovating and increase the useful service life of the building. An issue that was not addressed in this study was that the designs did not lead on to potential types of transformations. This could possibly be addressed applying different forms that a building could make with one structure. The main obstacle to DfD is the uncertainty about the future of a building and the changes that will affect a building. Further work needs to be done to establish an accurate reading of areas that may need upgrading or repair within a building. This would enhance the process of designing for disassembly.

3rd Year Thesis Community Centre, Train Station, Social Housing, Broombridge, Dublin 7. This project involved the coordination between an architectural student and myself. Through regular meetings and consent communication I was to complete a set of drawings to planning stage and detail selected areas for the architect. Through this exercise I learned the importance of communication and maintaining a trusting relationship with the Architect. The thesis was divided into 5 stages: Stage 1: Acceptance of the Architect Students’ Designs, Audit and Study of the Building Typology Stage 2: Esquisse; Location and Site Analysis, Planning and Organisation, Structure, External Envelope, Environmental Services/ Mechanical Plant, Fire Safety, Study of Materials, Acoustic Performance. Stage 3: 1:20 Section with Reference to NBS Stage 4: Details from 1:20 Section Stage 5: Gerenal Arrangements to Tender Stage

_Cuilin House

4th Year Thesis Cuilin House Project The brief consisted of the refurbishment & redevelopment of Cuilín House, Hampstead Avenue, Dublin 9. The project involved re-imagining a future for the Model Farm and its agricultural heritage in the context of an urbanised society facing into the challenges of climate change, peak oil, resource scarcity and a growth in global demand for food. Therefore, it was proposed that the agricultural education background of the building’s is reinstated in the form of a proposed urban farming school and agro-ecological model of food production. This collaborative project consisted of a team of 7 students and Lead Architect James Howley of Howley Hayes Architects. The submission consisted of: Stage 1: Site Investigation, Survey & Representation of Cuilin house Stage 2: Design Investigation & Development Stage 3: Fire Safety Certificate, Planning Permission, Disability Access Certificate Stage 4: General Arrangement Drawings to Tender Stage Stage 5: Oral and Graphic Competition Presentation to Dublin City Council

Woodwork One of my passionate hobbies is woodworking. I have spent the last couple of years collecting tools and developing new skills. I have had wonderful summers working in American summer camps teaching and running the woodshop. The Sun Chair This was my first major project and it was apart of my construction studies state exam (Leaving Cert.). I used lengths of seasoned oak and steamed each one individually to create a balance sun lounging chair. After steaming the wood was placed in a form for three days to let dry and stiffen. Once each length was curved, the lengths were fixed together using spines and finished with wax. The Picnic Table Project This brief explained that the table needed to be dissembled easily to be stored during the winter months and have enough seating for at least ten people. The disassembly is achieved by sliding the table top off and then by simply removing the pins from the legs the table is then dissembled and ready for storage. The table is made from red cedar. Projects Taught at Camp Theses are a few examples of the projects which I taught at camp. The children were allowed decide which project they wanted to do under the supervision of my co-councillors and I. Each project was given a different level of complexity which allowed the children to choose for themselves.
