Welcome to our 32nd annual bull sale. This will be our first year offering two year old bulls. These bulls were held back last year and have not been offered for sale before. They were fed the same as the bulls we sold last spring, and then ran out on grass since last spring. They are still out in a section pasture as I’m writing this and are being fed Muggli cake and free choice hay. They look good and are ready to roll into anyone’s wintering program. All of these bulls are virgin except a couple we used on our heifers last year. They are marked and have been trich tested. We are also selling yearling bulls that are suitable for use on heifers. We know the need to get a couple years out of your heifer bulls, so we will continue to sell yearling heifer bulls. These bulls will not have been semen tested as of sale day because of their age. We will semen test them in April before we deliver them. If one of these bulls happens to fail that semen test, we will replace him with another bull of equal or greater value from the 70 head of bulls kept to be sold as 2’s next year, or return your money, whichever you prefer. We again welcome Cook Angus to the sale. Our similar breeding philosophies, genetics, and management make us a natural fit and it’s a pleasure working with them again. We’ll be offering two well started young ranch geldings this year, a three-year-old from Spike and Kirbye Buffington’s program, and a five-year-old gelding from our friends and neighbors Russ and Natalie Burrows. Videos of the bulls and the horses are available at frontierstockyards.com. We’re still using the star rating for calving ease. 4 star bulls are what we consider sleep all night calving ease bulls. The 3 star bulls may give you a little more at birth and possibly a little more weight at weaning time. We’ll be serving coffee and food in our heated shop all day so come and spend the day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any one of us. Thank you for your support and interest in these bulls and our program.

Jack McNamee Claire McNamee SALE LOCATION: Go 15 miles south on 59, turn east on County Road 538, go 3 miles to the ranch.

Thanks to our friends and neighbors for their help and support! Auctioneer: Mark McNamee Phone 307-760-9510 Any correction made from the block on sale day takes precedent! McNamee Angus Ranch assumes no liability for any accidents occurring on the ranch.

EPD’s

Any yearling Angus animal’s EPD’s are interim since they obviously have no offspring yet. Those interim EPD’s are figured by the American Angus Association and are basically 50% the sires EPDs and 50% the dams with slight adjustments up or down for their actual birth and weaning weights. Our benevolent Angus Association has always given an interim EPD when we reported our calves for performance data. However, the board of directors decided that an interim EPD was a benefit of registration and unless you registered these calves, you would not get an EPD for them. The bottom line is too many people were not registering their AI calves because of the cost of the AI certificates. The breeders that sell the certificates were not getting any money when this happened. An AI certificate must accompany every calf that is the product of AI when they are registered. The Angus Association gets $10 for each AI certificate and the owner(s) of the bull usually gets anywhere from $10 to as much as $10,000 per certificate, I’ve heard. The cost is determined by the owner(s) of the bull. This really hurts us as we can’t register our calves early because we don’t collect the DNA information until we wean, and the later you register, the more it costs to do so. If I register late, it will cost me either $14 or $27 per head depending on when I get the DNA information back. What these directors don’t understand though, is they sold me a computer program that figures all the performance data (ratios). Interim EPD’s are not that hard to figure, so, the EPD’s on all of these bulls are 50% the sire’s EPD’s and 50% the dam’s and are not figured by the American Angus Association. All bulls except those marked as commercial are eligible for registration but will be sold without registration papers. If you have to have papers for programs like Angus Source, I will gladly register the bulls for you. If you are a registered breeder buying a bull to clean up on a bunch of AI’ed cows, and want to dabble in these genetics, I will NOT register those bulls. No offense to anyone, but I don’t like watching my good commercial buyers compete for bulls with that type of buyer. I’d much rather see the bulls go where they will do the most good. I also believe the value of these bulls should be set by what they will contribute genetically, and not based on the latest fad or the rarity of the genetics. We are raising bulls for the commercial industry, and have no desire to be part of the mainstream bull-of-the-month club, seedstock industry. We sell semen if you want to dabble.

Inbred Regression

Inbred regression in my opinion is about as misused a phrase as government intelligence. Inbreeding will expose problems in a particular animal, not create them. Inbreeding the right animal will likewise emphasize that animal’s good qualities. Too many times, problems exposed when inbreeding gets laid at the feet of inbreeding when the real problem was the animal that was inbred. You can’t make a thoroughbred out of horse shit. We’ve been inbreeding/line breeding 1116 for 12 years now and the cattle just continue to get better. By better we mean better as a group and not just better individuals. Better as in consistency of the type that suits our needs, both from a management and an environment stand point. All of this is not by chance either. 1116’s breeding was created by better breeders than us who believed in this very same philosophy, generations ago. You see it all the time in nature. Animals that come back from the brink of extinction. Think how inbred they must be. If inbred regression played as large of a role as some would like you to believe, Bald Eagles should be the size of pigeons and the wolves in Yellowstone Park would look like scrawny coyotes chasing bison around that were the size of sheep. 2

FOUNDATION BULLS

1116

We usually lead off our herd sires with 7013, but as good as 7013 was, we have really bred his sire 1116, more through four different sons: 7013, 6936, 6141, and 6916. We have also kept and used numerous grandsons and great grandsons of his. To our way of thinking, 1116 will go down as the most influential bull we’ve used in our 30+ years breeding cattle. He was bred and raised by Dennis and Erica Voss of Horse Butte Ranch. In 1116, we have been able to find cattle that do so many thing’s well for us. From the beautifully maternal females that last in our environment and under our management, to the functional, masculine males that get out and work to get cows bred, we have seen success on both ends. We will continue to fold 1116 into our breeding program. Thank you, Dennis and Erica Voss, for sharing the genetics of 1116 with us. He is your life time of work and experience, and we don’t take being able to benefit from the use of him lightly.

6946 is another 1728 son we kept from our 2016 calf crop, largely based on the strength of his dam. She is from our Sweet Sarah cow family and she’s a daughter of 6936. The 6936 daughters have made beautiful, easy keeping, correct cows. They’re very gentle, attentive mothers that look to last.

6055 is a bull that we kept from our 2016 calf crop. He’s out of 1728 back to a True Bess- Sweet Sarah cow. His mother was phenotypically right in every way and was one of the most attentive mothers as a heifer we’ve ever had. You never saw her that she didn’t have that calf with her. We used him successfully on heifers for two years and moved him onto mature cows last spring.

7472 is another son of 1728. His dam is a full sister to the 4003 bull and a direct daughter of the 832 cow.

1728 is a 7013 son that has done a really good job for us. His daughters are solid cows in every manner. They’re very maternal, structurally correct, beautifully uddered cows, and his sons are bulls that act and breed like a range bull should. Very balanced cattle. He is the sire of 6055, 6946, and 7472

6428 is a son of our 4001 bull. He goes back to 1126, HBR Emblem (a half-brother to 6141 through the 3128 cow), and a double bred Appraiser daughter. We kept him to use on our heifers. Vey consistent calving ease bull.

4832 A was our top selling bull in 2015 and we flushed Cole’s Shoshone Rosemary cow to him. These are range cattle that don’t need much extra to get their job done.

6368 is a double bred 6936 son of 2943 out of a direct daughter of 6936. He combines the Forever lady cow family and the Sweet Sarah cow family and is triple bred 1116.

6461. We flushed the old Sweet Sarah 807 cow (tag number 832) to Voss’s Shoshone 1216144 bull to bring in the Prudence cow and to continue on the 832 cow. We have two really nice made daughters out of that flush. They’ve held their condition really well and they’ve got perfect udders. This is the first calf out of one of those daughters.

Dimond Edison 927 is the first outside bull we’ve bought in years. He’s a son of JAD Phylix that brings in the Prudence 6157 cow and then out of a tightly bred 6141 daughter. He combines the Ben Diamond and John Dockweiler programs, both of which we have the utmost respect for.

The two-year-old bulls will be delivered as soon after the sale as possible. A $50/head discount will be given if you take your bulls home sale day, or within a few days of the sale. They have been poured for lice. The yearling bulls will be delivered in April after they have passed their semen evaluation. A $50/ head discount will be applied if you pick them up within a week of us letting you know they passed their semen test. They will have had two shots of foot rot vaccine and they will be poured for lice. 7

325, 419, 220, 435, & 286 are the bulls in the pick of the flush. They are out of the 730 cow (tattoo 7413) and our 5339 bull. This flush represents a line we’re developing to provide an outcross for our customers to cross on our 1116 pedigree’s. The main thing we were looking for in an outcross bull was one that would not be a disruption to what we have gained with 1116. 5339 is doing that for us and we’re confident that he’ll do the same for you. He traces back to a bull we bought from Greg Golden, Cole Creek 1100 Black 1272, so you know the guess work has been taken out of his pedigree generations ago by one of the few breeders left in this business.

12

THE 730 COW

We flushed the 730 cow based solely on what she is and what she’s produced. This picture was taken in mid Jan. of this year. She is a coming 13 years old. She’s calved out in the hills every year since she was a two year old, she’s never lost a calf, she’s never been touched for any calving problems, she’s never calved late, she’s always in good shape and she looks to last for several more years based on her structure and history. All things vitally important to the profitability of a range cow and not an EPD for one of them. The other four bulls that don’t sell from this flush we will keep and use along with two other sons out of the 730 cow.

Welcome to McNamee Angus 32th Annual Bull Sale. The support, mentoring, and friendship of Jack and his entire family has been unbelievable. We truly appreciate the opportunity to participate in their sale. Our goals and objectives have not changed; raise a functional set of mother cows that fit the harsh Eastern Montana environment with minimal amount of inputs. We also are offering some two year old bulls for sale this year. These bulls were held back for this reason and not offered for sale before. The bulls have been running with and handled the same as the McNamee bulls since the middle of May. None of the bulls offered were used this past year and all were semen tested in September. We are also offering a hand full of yearling bulls some of which are suitable for heifers and others that are outstanding cow bulls. There will be 20 head of two year old bulls for sale next year from our program. Like McNamee’s, these yearling bulls will not be semen tested before sale day due to their age. Bulls will have a full reproductive and semen test performed by Miles City Vet Clinic, Dr. Cal Davidson the end of April before delivery. If a bull does not pass, we will replace him with a bull of equal value or refund your money, which ever you prefer. This year we started using McNamee’s star rating calving ease system on our heifer bulls. Hopefully this keeps things easy to follow and consistent. We also are going along with McNamee’s programs on bull delivery and discounts. Our program is consistent with the past. Cattle graze on improved dryland and native pastures. The only new part of our operation is that the cows stay at the ranch on Rosebud Creek. This has been great for us and our cattle. Cows are fed hay and DDG’s as needed in the winter to maintain condition. Salt and mineral are free choice year-round. Our registered and commercial cows run together with the exception at breeding. We line breed when possible, producing cattle that are predictable and consistent. We will use some home raised bulls to breed both our commercial and registered cows. We focus on a structural correct, moderate cow that has a live calf, savvy mothering ability to raise that calf, with an appreciated disposition. We do not waiver our core values for open, hard keeping, poor udder, high headed cows. We want cows that stay in the herd a long time, returning like kind and profitability. You will notice several Dams and Grandams of the sale bulls are still actively producing at 10 plus years old. A tribute to structural soundness, fertility, and longevity. The bulls are wintered at the ranch 10 miles south of Colstrip, MT. Fed CHS Bull Challenger pellets, long stem hay, 4 pounds DDG’s and Flax Lick tubs. All two year old bulls are and were fed the same as spring yearling bulls till turned out on grass in May. Bulls have had branding and preconditioning shots. This fall they were given Multi Min 90 and poured in January. Yearling bulls will receive a Fosoguard and anther Multi Min 90 shot at semen test time. The EPD’s on our bull calves are estimations: formulated using sire and dam EPD’s. We emphasize functional and economical traits rather than focusing on numbers. The bull calves have not been registered, if you need a bull registered let us know and we will register at our cost, except those marked as commercial. Lindsey and I would like to thank everyone for your continued support and prayers. If you have any questions, please contact us at any time. Visitors are always welcome. Home raised bull. Crossing these two lines of Angus cattle have produced a long, deep body, outstanding herd bull. We kept this bull to use on our commercial cows with great results. We are using him on the papered cows with same good results. His dam might be my favorite cow, excellent phenotype and structure, breeds back right on time. Females produced by these genetics will stay around for a long time.

SHINEY TRIGGER

is now standing at McNamee Angus Ranch and accepting mares for the 2020 breeding season. We are about to welcome our 7th colt crop out Trigger and couldn’t be more pleased with his offspring thus far. He has no doubt stamped them with his good conformation and amazing disposition. Trigger is the kind of horse you can ride all day and get your job done on and at the same token our kids gets along great with him too. Trigger will be available for viewing sale day at the ranch and we are excited to offer one of his colts in this years sale!

Call Spike now to get on the schedule for the 2020 breeding season 406-421-5623.

Wizard is a beautiful, well built, 3-year-old palomino gelding with an exceptional mind. We started him when he was two, gave him some time off and got back to riding him steady this fall. He has the build, athleticism and mind to go in any direction you want from ranch to the arena. This great gelding is gentle and safe for the whole family. Because the sale is earlier this year, I would like to give the new owner the option of leaving Wizard with me for two months, so I can get some more outside miles on him during calving and then send him home ready to go! Call Spike for more information and to try him out before sale day 406-853-4629 or 406-421-5623.

33

2016 Aqha Bay Gelding. 15.1 Hands tall and is still growing. He is broke but not finished. He has been used on the ranch, goes where you point him and started on the hot heels. He is light, responsive, and very gentle, about anyone could ride him. He has good bones and feet but he does turn in on the front. Text or call for more info and videos.
