WHY I DEsign
Kia Ora! I’m McKay. I’m a petrolhead, Love a cheeky Craft beer, and feels that Nickelback is just terrible. I’m a designer by day, and a maker by night. I love to tinker with “things” and make them better, faster, more efficent or as kids say these days, “Lit” This need to make things “Lit”, more efficient and interesting gives me skills that I feel could create value to the workplace. I’m an absolute sucker for new and innovative design/ technology and In the workplace, I’m a hard worker, yet still have time for some solid friendly banter. My work has been seen in Exhibitons, Various Media, And even the odd racetrack or two.

Tall wood study
01 ““Identify and create a easy, simple and effective solution to give users an understanding of Tall Wood’s innovative building system ”” For small low cost homes to multi level apartments, Tall Wood has developed a innovative building system, using engineered timber to deliver sustainable buildings that have massive quality, speed and cost advantages, over traditional building techniques. Tall Wood’s new and unique approach to construction and design needs further explanation to potential clients. Using Industrial/Product design based thinking, I came up with a number of simple diagrams and renders to explain the basic principles of Tall Wood.
CABA solution CABA is a Pre-Fabricated modular building system designed for a variety of different uses, whether that is a small beach bach, or a large 4 bedroom family home. Explaining the potential of this concept to potential uses involved diagrams of the basic structure, and give users possible layouts and ideas to make their home truly theirs.
TALL TIMBER solution Using a similar approach to the CABA diagrams/ renders, I developed a series of renders/diagrams showcasing the basics of Tall Woodsâ€™ Tall Timber system. This gives potential clients a understanding of the Tall Wood concept
WASTE REUSE EVOLVED
OMNI - RAFT
02 ““Identify new potential uses for this valuable waste material, especially in the form of new products”” For the production of motorhomes, light commercial and emergency vehicles, Action Manufacturing has developed a lightweight foam‐fibreglass sandwich panel which can be further re‐enforced with internal aluminium framing. This product is branded as ‘Omni Panel’ and is produced in‐house in a range of thicknesses and CNC cut to size. Apart from trimming the edges of each panel, doors, windows and service opening are removed leaving an abundance of medium to large size off‐cuts which currently have no value and go to waste. In an attempt to operate more sustainably and maximize material use Action Manufacturing was looking for a way to reuse and add value to these off‐cuts.

Despite it’s size, The OMNI-RAFT can fold flat, rapidly improving storage space. With the simple pull of a rope, the whole raft comes together. Its also lighter than similar rafts, while being stronger, due to the Omni-panel structure. All of these amazing properties, while being manufactured from waste materials. Smart.

RAPID IDEATION How do I Improve this?
WHAT IS XYLO-FUN? XyloFun is an interactive modular pedestrian lane that consists of a series of various colored “buttons” which are retrofitted to an existing pathway. These “buttons” light up a series of LED lights on the next available button, and initiate a sound, when walked over. These buttons are powered by the kinetic energy recovered from the commuters walking, which is then stored in a battery. These lights create a unique and fun way to way finding, while also creating a enjoyable and uplifting environment through positive physical interaction.

04 “TO CREATE A UNIQUE AND ATTRACTIVE IDENTITY FOR BGB DRIFT AND ITS PRODUCTS” BGB Drift are a Drifting Team currently compeating in the D1NZ Pro-Sport series. After the success of previous years, They gained a number of new sponsors that wanted a Vinyl design that would “Stand Out” on the track giving a large share of exposure. The combination of bright colours and Digitzed hand drawn graphics ensure an incredibly unique stance.

05 Oceania Career Academy (OCA) is a Trade focused Academy targeting youth with a student-focused, career-focused and industry-driven programme. Through The Southern Initiative (TSI), The OCA wants to enhance creative and experimental learning opportunities within the academy. CEPS or Creative, Engaging Problem Solving is a model devoted to giving the youth of New Zealand the tools and the hope that they can address issues in a trade-based environment, classroom or anywhere with the hope that they will find the tools to solve issues in their community and society as a whole.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE?
This project was in collabaration with 4 other designers in other fields. We created and implemented an innovative model to enable applied learning for students. To full y understand what possible issues the trade schools have, we did some role playing, becoming so-called “Teachers” for a week.
Curent robotic “tunnel vision” learning leaves little room for expression
Our first trial was practiced through The OCA (Oceania Career Academy) and it’s through this trades-based academy that we have developed our model.

WHY SOLVE THIS ISSUE? -30% of South Auckland youth are unemployed - Tradesmen shortage - Trades are seen as “unsuccessful”

WHAT IS CEPS? Empowerment and confidence is the key and through CEPS weâ€™ve seen that the model is successful in our first trial.
