Fall 2012 Newsletter/Course Schedule
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at The Florida State University A Message from the OLLI Director and OLLI Member President When we were children and summer drew to an end, our thoughts turned to school and fall classes. Membership in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FSU provides the opportunity to experience that same “first day of school” excitement we felt as children. What subjects will we study, who will be our teacher, and which extracurricular activities will tempt us? OLLI offers intellectually stimulating academic classes and an abundance of activities providing quality educational and recreational experiences. With over 700 students, OLLI is a member-driven organization supported by an exceptionally qualified staff. Members are governed by an Executive Board, supplemented by an Advisory Board consisting of volunteers who lead committees, programs and activities. Volunteers make OLLI the wonderful organization it is, and all members are invited to offer their ideas and services to make OLLI even better. Our current and future success is founded on our relationship with FSU and the Bernard Osher Foundation. At the same time, OLLI is truly community-wide, with our wonderful partnership with Westminster Oaks and the area’s colleges and universities and cultural institutions. Classes are offered not only in Tallahassee but also in Monticello, and lifelong learners from throughout the region are invited to join us. Looking toward the future, we held a strategic planning retreat last February and developed goals for the next five years, including enhancing classes, increasing volunteers, ensuring leadership succession, and developing a culture of giving. Already, through the generosity of our members, OLLI has now awarded scholarships to three deserving FSU students, two of whom have served as exceptional OLLI instructors. We invite you to review the wealth of classes and activities described in this newsletter and join us for all the learning and fun that OLLI offers. Be sure to check out our website, olli.fsu.edu, for even more information. As we like to say, “Come for the classes. Stay for the friendships!”
