The Power of Community to Change Lives
Volunteers Trained for Enroll DuPage Initiative Loaves & Fishes is one of 13 community partners awarded funds by the DuPage County Health Department to participate in Enroll DuPage activities, which entail conducting outreach, education and enrollment in the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace throughout DuPage County. Enrollment in the Marketplace will begin at our site in mid-October, with coverage starting January 1, 2014. Loaves & Fishes received a grant of $50,000 to participate in this effort. DuPage County Health Department received funding from the Illinois Department of Public Health to partner with community groups in providing outreach and enrollment assistance to DuPage County residents. The state has received federal funding to cover the start-up costs and the first year of operations of the Marketplace. Staff and volunteers selected for Enroll DuPage participated in an intensive training program designed to prepare them to educate consumers about the ACA and their health care options. Several Naperville CARES volunteers are also part of the Loaves & Fishes program, which will offer 12 to 15 hours of weekly assistance. “Our amazing volunteers have worked hard to meet the demands of an In-Person counselor for the Affordable Care Act,” according to Jane Macdonald, Director of Client Engagement. “The training required both federal and state components, a significant commitment of time.” While many questions exist about the changes in healthcare coverage, many Loaves & Fishes clients are expected to be able to take advantage of the new Medicaid expansion. Volunteers are happy to answer clients’ questions and to be part of finding the solutions for our community.
REFRIGERATED TRUCK OPENS DOORS FOR LOAVES & FISHES The top priority of Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry’s strategic plan is to provide the broadest array possible of healthy and diverse food options. Loaves & Fishes consulted with its Nutrition Advisory Council (NAC), comprised of nutritional experts and licensed dietitians, for advice to achieve this goal. With a client base transcending all ages and diverse cultures, nutritional considerations are no small challenge, and the NAC is tasked with ensuring that Loaves & Fishes’ clients receive well-balanced, healthy food options. According to NAC chair, Toni Havala, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., “Low fat dairy alternatives, such as soy, are the primary sources of calcium and vitamin D in the American child’s diet. They also provide a valuable source of protein. Without these foods, it puts a child at risk for deficiencies and the associated health risks.” Thanks to a recent grant and additional private donations, a new refrigerated truck is now part of Loaves & Fishes’ food recovery vehicles, which will make it possible for Loaves & Fishes to substantially increase the amount of healthy lean proteins and produce it offers. “Families with limited resources often have to forgo these food groups to make ends meet,” Havala explains. “Having these foods available to pantry clients is such a wonderful opportunity and a boon for the health of the community.” With the addition of a refrigerated truck, perishable products will now be safely and efficiently transported year round. Charlie Brooks, United Parcel Service (UPS) Region Operations Manager, who serves on the Loaves & Fishes Board of Directors, was instrumental in obtaining funding toward this critical expense. Additional support came from donors who contributed to the Truck Club, a targeted appeal. “The purchase of this refrigerated vehicle realizes a long-held goal to allow Loaves & Fishes to access many more opportunities to receive healthy, perishable food items for our families,” said Charles P. McLimans. “This truck will help us increase capacity in providing the nutritious, fresh foods that are so popular with our clients and essential for their health and well-being.” Large donations of perishable goods may be arranged by calling 630-355-3663. 1

Director’s Corner A Time for Giving Thanks Autumn is my favorite season. Cooler temperatures arrive, leaves begin to turn, our fiscal year audit is complete, and we continue to reap the rich harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables planted and shared by our neighbors. And so it is we enter the season of giving thanks. Thank you for helping Loaves & Fishes achieve another record year! In the past fiscal year we provided 3,272,680 pounds of groceries to 4,606 individual households, a 9% increase over the prior year. The number of people served throughout the year totaled 122,932, and 43% of them were children. 1,682 people enhanced their lives through our empowerment programs, and our volunteers provided 79,000 hours of service to our cause. Wow! That is the power of a compassionate community in action. Thank you to our donors for funding our shared aspiration of a hunger free community, and the aspirations of the neighbors who come to us who need our help and rely on your compassion. Through your generosity we were able to fund three new programs and feed more people with more nutritious food. For example, you have helped us to triple our purchase of milk for families with kids, and obtain a refrigerated truck to transport dairy, meats, and other fresh products safely and directly from our community food partners to our grocery distribution center. Thank you to our outstanding volunteers who are the most amazing, giving, wonderful people in the world. Loaves & Fishes runs and works because of your heart for service. And even though we had a record number of volunteers and service hours this past year, we still find ourselves short-handed in many areas. With the addition of more hours of distribution this past year, more empowerment programs, and more opportunities for volunteer engagement in leadership roles, we continue to seek and need more helping hands and open hearts. So please thank our volunteers when you see them, and consider the many service opportunities available at Loaves & Fishes. By the way, December 3, 2013 is “Giving Tuesday” nationwide. Read more information about this tremendous opportunity to double the impact of your gift in the box below. And thank you for the blessing of your friendship! Gratefully,

Volunteer Corner Summer was a busy time in the Volunteer Engagement office. Shelly Schmitz has stepped in as Director of Volunteer Engagement after April Fitzhugh made the decision to stay home with her new son. Hilary Nelson, who became interim Volunteer Coordinator when April went on maternity leave in June, was rewarded for her fine work with the permanent title of Volunteer Coordinator. We are excited to have this duo lead our current volunteers and help recruit some new faces too! “I joined as a volunteer during the summer of 2012, working on the registration team and Day Without Hunger and embarking on the Enroll DuPage program,” Shelly said. “I was always so impressed with the compassion and enthusiasm of all the volunteers. I am so delighted that now I get to work with everyone every day! I am making 1,500 new friends!”
Join Our Volunteer Workforce! While a volunteer workforce of 1,500 sounds massive, Loaves & Fishes has so much demand for our services that we are always recruiting more service-minded folks. Visit our website at http://www.loavesfishes.org/get-involved/volunteer/ to get started.
