I

n a recent collection from Australian design duo Stephan Ormandy and Louise Olsen, ColourBlock juxtaposes a variety of solid hues against one another to playful effect. From bright vivid flourishes to soft primary colours, the collection is as eye catching as it is practical – the signature gesture of renowned studio Dinosaur Designs, with Olsen and Ormandy at the helm. Being part of the Dinosaur Designs range, it’s of little surprise that the collection also features the gorgeous organic shapes and naturalistic lines that have made the brand famous on local and international shores.

ColourBlock is Olsen and Ormandy’s take on the art of blocking colours. Through playing with solid hues, juxtaposing them and exploring how they relate to one another in a singular design, the pair have created a collection that is bold and striking yet never garish. Audacious and soft primary colours form the palette of the range, which embraces the warmth and the cold, with colours ranging from cobalt blue to vivid coral red, accented by bright grass green and lustrous golds recalling summer days. Along with the bangles and jewellery the Colourblock range also features a homewares collection that leaves an equally strong impression. Bright contrasts rendered in sculptural forms and strong geometric shapes have been designed to stand out from the commonly generic nature of utility-driven homewares. Traditional design boundaries have been pushed to forge unique sculptural forms that coalesces into a harmonious collection. 4

“There is a wonderful, playful nature to this collection,” says Louise Olsen. “In the same way that you play with blocks as a child, it’s about adding and subtracting colour to your body or your home’s interiors.” ColourBlock stands as a marked contrast, however, to the brand’s latest collections – Sand and Forest – both in visual and material language. Redolent of ancient tribal aesthetics, and yet still speaking to an ultra-contemporary naturalism, Sand’s earthy and matte sensibility draws on the rhythmic forms found in sandstone. Meanwhile Forest harkens back to the bold tonal scheme of ColourBlock to explore the interplay of architecture and nature – the varying contrasts of forest green, snow white, black and silver. Having recently celebrated their 32nd anniversary for Dinosaur Designs, Ormandy says “I feel like we are just getting started and I’m so humbled that people continue to enjoy what we do”. Needless to say that 30 years for Dinosaur Designs has seen the brand rise to meteoritic fame – a surefire sign that there are many of us excited to see what the next 30 years will bring Olsen and Ormandy.
