‘The All in One’ - Acrylic and ink on mounted plywood - 2013

A beastly pursuit Far from his beastly moniker, this mild mannered Sydney artist is a hardworking professional who takes his work very seriously. Brad Eastman fuses his given names to invoke the pseudonym, Beastman; the creator of breathtaking murals and paintings found anywhere from inner city back streets to galleries, billboards, even wine labels. Despite the street style nature of his practice, Brad’s mural works are usually commissioned, and after ten years of hard yakka, he’s in the privileged position of being able to pick and choose his projects.

Brands such as Element Skateboards, Facebook, Hyundai and Smirnoff regularly knock on Brad’s door, but he still loves the down to earth and physical challenges of creating large mural works. It’s not unusual to see him suspended on a cherry picker or scaffolding, using techniques developed from various mentors and years of experience, as well as his background in graphic design and skateboarding culture.

Rendered with hard edge precision in aerosol paint, his intricate tropes of shape and colour are unmistakeable. They grow along walls and up the sides of buildings with a curious logic that is nothing short of psychedelic, defying the restrictive surfaces on which they appear. Viewers often see various influences in, and have unique interpretations of the works, which Brad always welcomes and celebrates. Occasionally mcgrath.com.au


his murals are even vandalised, but Brad knows that’s how art in public space rolls, it invites reinterpretation or intervention. Recently, Brad was asked to create a billboard inspired by the new model MINI Paceman; a task he relished. Polished productions like this one are favoured because they allow creative freedom and give great exposure for the artist. Commanding a prime position overlooking Broadway, the resulting abstract billboard literally stopped traffic.

Keen to keep his hand in as many baskets as possible, one of Brad’s latest ventures is East Editions, an online homewares business with his wife, Kelly. It’s perfect for the pair, as they’ve just had their first child and want to stay close to home in Dulwich Hill. Fresh and edgy, their unique range includes painted furniture, quilt cover sets, cushions and desktop sculpture. All items are in limited edition, produced in collaboration with established and emerging artists.
