Readiness & Deployment Support Program Deployment Support Groups:

Hearts Apart Hearts Apart is a deployment support group that brings families together that are experiencing the hardships of separation and deployment. This is an opportunity to network while learning valuable information that will aid in meeting the challenges of the military lifestyle. The weekly topics are based on the immediate needs of the participants and include but are not limited to: Stress Management, Single Parenting, and the Emotional Cycle of Deployment. Occasionally, we will invite representatives from other resources (such as New Parent Support, Exceptional Family Member Program, Life Long Learning, and Military Family Life Consultants) to provide the group with a better understanding of the additional programs and resources that are available to them. The group meets on Fridays from 1000-1200 at the MCFTB Training House (487 Laurel Bay Blvd). Children are welcome, however free childcare is available at the MCAS CDC with advance registration. Kids on the Home Front Kids on the Home Front is a networking group for children that have a deployed parent. Children make new friends and connect with each other while they create a deployment related craft project. This workshop is offered every other Saturday, giving children something to look forward to throughout the deployment. Pre-Deployment:

Pre-Deployment Briefs (Single/Married) The purpose of the pre-deployment brief is to prepare the individual Marine and their family members for the upcoming deployment. This brief provides information and resources for the service member or family member to use before, during, and after the deployment. During Deployment Workshops:

Kids-N-Deployment Kids-N-Deployment is a unit specific workshop that is offered 2-4 weeks after the departure. This is a two sided workshop; one side for children (K – 5th grade) and the other for parents. Children will enjoy a puppet show, decorate a hard cover journal, and participate in unit project to send to the deployed unit. The parents’ workshop is open to all parents; they will learn how to better communicate with their child about deployments and feelings. During the workshop, parents and children will have an opportunity to record a message from home to include with the unit project.

Auto Care: Handy Spouse How often should you check your oil, tire pressure, brake fluid or anti-freeze? If you have no idea then this is the class for you! Auto maintenance can be absolutely confusing when you don’t know what you’re doing. If your spouse is not home, then take advantage of this FREE class that will teach you how to do it yourself! This will be a hands-on workshop where you will gain the knowledge and skills to do your own basic auto maintenance. Plus you will get great tips on choosing a mechanic for more complex repairs. Basic Self Defense Marines and Sailors know how to defend themselves in the face of danger and so should spouses. Attend this hands-on class where you will be taught various basic self defense moves by a martial arts instructor. You will also receive useful information on physical security and crime prevention. This is a perfect opportunity to network with other spouses while learning how to protect yourself! Blazin’ Burgers If your Marine or Sailor isn’t home or is the only one in the house who knows how to use a grill then this is the class for you! Join us as we grill burgers and learn all about fire safety. This class will show you how to safely use a grill, how to safely cook at home, and how to put out a fire if necessary. You will also receive lots of great tips on preventing small fires in your home. So why not eat and learn while networking with other spouses going through the same thing as you? The Casualty Assistance Process Given by the Casualty Assistance Call Officer (CACO), this brief educates spouses on the process of Casualty Assistance and reassures them that they will be taken care of in every way possible should the need arise for a CACO to visit them. Please note that this brief is not to scare spouses or bring up the morbid “what ifs”, only to educate them on the process and briefs. This brief will be offered upon request. Deployment Stress and Coping This workshop provides spouses with an understanding of the stress continuum and how it relates to Marines, spouses and children. Participants will learn how to manage stress, build resiliency, and gain the knowledge of the resources available when the stress becomes something that is unmanageable. Let’s Get Motivated! In order to thrive during a deployment you need personal motivation. But how can you get motivated about something if you don’t know what it is you want first? This class will help you identify the personal and professional goals you desire for yourself while your marine is away. You will create your own vision board that represents the incredible individual that lives within you. Let’s get motivated together while having fun and establishing your vision during this deployment and beyond! The topics covered in this class include: setting financial goals, developing a spending plan, and reducing debt. Maximize Joy, Minimize Stress It’s very easy to get stressed out when going through a deployment or living the military lifestyle in general. Take a break and join other spouses who are going through the same thing as you. There is no better time than the present to begin replacing unwanted stress in your life with joy and happiness. You deserve it! Power of Play When going through a deployment it can be hard to get your children to talk about their feelings and emotions. This is why it’s beneficial that parents learn to speak their children’s language. It’s called play! This class will focus on informing parents of ways to communicate with their children through engaging activities. Parents will receive tools and resources on how to help your children better cope with a deployment. The class will cover information for all age groups. Social Networking Safety During a deployment you may find joy in connecting with others by using various sites on the internet such as Facebook, twitter, MySpace, and emails. These resources can be great for you, but not if they are used improperly. This class will inform you on how to stay safe while you’re online, at home, traveling or just talking with friends and family. You will be amazed by the small things that are done every day to jeopardize the safety of military families. Join us as you enhance your knowledge of social networking. Tips for Thriving During Deployment Many military spouses going through deployments all say the same thing. “I never seem to have enough time to do anything, or I don’t know what to do.” This class will give you great tips on how to not only survive a deployment, but how to thrive through it. Come meet other

spouses who understand what you are going through, and take away tidbits to turn the deployment into an opportunity for personal growth!
