MACK AY CHR ISTI AN FAM ILY CHUR CH PROVIDENCE / GOD’S CHOICE THE JOURNEY FROM 2005 TILL NOW
M O C L E W
M O C L E W It’s so great that you’re a part of our Sunday celebration service. As we celebrate Jesus today, we pray that you fe el right at home. We would love for you to join us in the “Me eting Place” after our morning service for a cuppa so we can enjoy some great coffe e and connection!
We had an unusual month in January... losing 2 parents has be en challenging but we have be en blessed by the love and support of our Church and other Christians.
It is important for us to be God’s love to the world so that everyday, people we come in contact with will experience the presence of God that lives within us. The mistake we sometimes make is to think that it is all up to us to share Jesus with people, but in reality, if we co-operate with the Holy Spirit and allow the love that is in us to shine forth, we will become the witnesses of God’s gift in Jesus without having to struggle. If we cho ose to love people then we will care for them and their eternal life. Please don’t let busyness crowd out time for people whether they are close friends and relatives or casual connections in the shopping centre. I believe it’s little by little we touch one life at a time. I am thankful for those who touched mine and quietly brought me to truth. Let’s love and change this world together. Neither rain, hail nor outrageous humidity could stop us from gathering
together to share a meal and bless some new families in our scho ol. Our guests who braved the pouring rain really did enjoy themselves and made some great connections. Thank you! We were all great hosts and put on an evening to remember. I would also like to say a special “Thank you” for the morning tea we were able to supply for Gloria and her family after Ps Bevan Jopling’s funeral. It was a lovely time to reflect on a man who lived his life honouring God and fighting the go od fight. Ps Jop was well loved and will be greatly missed. I pray that all the Care Cell leaders fe el refreshed after our half a day gathering. 2010 is going to be dynamic!

the ways of God. It is no go od just to tell them what they ne ed to do, because they are the biggest copy cats. We ne ed to show them faith in action, love in action, compassion in action, hunger for God in action.
This month we aim to teach our children about God’s promises, His faithfulness and how He ne eds to be number one in their lives. How at home can you show them these truths of God in action? ~~~ There is a group of people just 5 minutes away who are hungry to know about God. Will you go? At At At At

LITTLE WOMEN with BIG hearts/// By Jennifer Booth-Jones
Nothing could have prepared me for what I experienced at ‘Empowered 2010. ’ For the thre e we eks prior to Empowered, Revolution and Ignite girls were preparing for our annual mini-conference held especially for our girls by our girls. Most people, especially boys could assume that an event like Empowered is just another excuse for lots of girls to come together, giggle at silly girly things, eat copious amounts of chocolate and cry about who knows what... Well, I’m not going to lie; we did do those things, however, with little preparation time leading up to the event there was so much expectation that God was going to do something breathtaking. The excited, nervous wait had begun!

We were blessed to have Deneisha Gilbank from CCC come and minister powerfully over the we ekend, as well as some of our young guys and chick leaders from Revolution. However, it was God who blew us all away. He is the reason why we were so adamant on hosting this conference, even if it was on such short notice. In this day and age, what our young women are being exposed to and pressured into is simply mind-boggling. The pressure to be a certain weight, lo ok a certain way, date a certain guy, and act a certain way for a certain guy could make any grown woman, let alone a naive young woman, question their value, not to mention their identity. We could sense that God was really serious about breaking mindsets and unhealthy strongholds in our young women because they are the mothers, businesswomen, teachers, inventors, communicators and world-changers of tomorrow.
In the somewhat mad rush of preparing for Empowered, we made a deliberate effort not to lose sight of why we were having this conference, and after se eing what God did without us and our music, runshe ets and games...we’re glad we didn’t lose our focus. A personal highlight was at one point on the Friday night, all 92 girls started singing, more like shouting, with all their passion and exburance the theme song to ‘Spongebob Squarepants.’ Who would have thought? I certainly didn’t! However, as a 22 year old woman, I saw how truly special and important it is to ‘let lo ose’ every now and then and be girls... Not big, grown-up, to oco ol-to-have-fun women, but rather little women who have big, child-like hearts ready to be filled with the plans and purposes of their loving Creator. In just two days hearts were healed and set fre e, lives changed and rearranged, friendships made and commitments sealed, love was affirmed and joy re-ignited...and that’s just the beginning! Here’s to what’s to come!

E T I N G I Wow, what a star t to the year!
We have be en absolutely privileged to have Pastor David and Sharryn Westbro ok join the team this year as our new Young Adults pastors. We have hit the ground running with our Friday night programs. We have “Friday Night Life” every fortnight at Metro Market; this focuses on doing life together and teaching practical things that affect Young Adults in their everyday life. Ignite Church happens once a month in the St Pauls Uniting Church Hall on Macalister Stre et where Pastor David has be en preaching up a storm, doing a series called “True North” about direction in life and the purposes God has for us. We have intentionally placed ourselves in the city, where just blocks away from both of our venues there are other young adults, just like us, up at the nightclubs and bars in town. We want to be right in the middle of it, where we can reach out and make a difference. This is effective in Red Frogs Up Town where teams go into the city once a fortnight and minister by handing out fre e fo od and drinks to partygoers, without any motivation apart from wanting to bless our community. We are so excited about where God is taking us and even more excited about what He’s doing in the lives of our young adults. Until next time,
With Love, The Ignite Team

Moses was given The Promised Land, MCF was given Providence. By Jennifer Booth-Jones
When Moses was given the responsibility to lead God’s people into The Promised Land I doubt he was aware that the
journey would be so long and strenuous. What was estimated to be an 11 day journey from their place of captivity, Eygpt to Caanan, ‘the land flowing with milk and honey’, grew to an exhausting 40 years! Fortunately for us, the journey to our ‘Promised Land’ hasn’t be en as long, however, it hasn’t be en a leisurely stroll in the park either. A vision which was hoped to be completed by 2008 is now only getting underway as of late last year. The land, which was appropriately named “Providence” due to God’s incredible provsion, had be en sitcontinued next page...

ting dormant since Mackay Christian College made the purchase in 2005. The hold up? Awaiting council approval. It was hoped that approval to build new state-of-the-art classro oms and a new multi-purpose hall would come faster than the land falling into our laps in the first place. Sadly, as one year passed, so did the next...the promise of se eing something come about in the physical wasn’t lo oking bright. Thankfully, the leaders of Mackay Christian Family Church and Mackay Christian College, Pastor Rob and Pastor Craig never relied on what they saw in the natural, but rather since stepping on to that barren, 27 acre block of land in August 2005 chose to believe that this land, “Providence”, was ‘God’s choice’ and were determined to hold fast to this promise by faith and not by sight. continued next page...
the barren beginnings // photo taken in October 2009 23
If only walking in faith was as easy as talking about it. No one knew the great challenges that lay ahead. Betwe en the years 2006 and 2009, the college experienced two major flo ods, inflicting a lot of physical and financial damage and then there was the economic down-turn which forced a lot of families to move out of town due to job losses and financial struggle. Furthermore, the leadership faced their own battles. In 2008 Pastor Craig was confronted with health problems which lead to him undergoing major heart surgery and at one time, Pastor Rob was bearing the weight of being Senior Pastor as well as the role of managing the College and Church’s finances. All of this was taking place while the wait for council approval continued from 2006 through to 2009. Negativity towards council se emed natural, however a choice was made to bless the council despite the long hardship, and because of that the College and Church has powered on, blessing our community, not by physical might or physical power, but by God’s Spirit. Towards the end of 2009, breakthrough came when Pastor Rob and Pastor Craig recieved news that council had finally approved the construction of the new College facilities. Relief was an understatement, the promise of Providence was finally in a new season. It is now ‘all systems go’, as there is so much more that ne eds to be done. There are land allotments on Providence being prepared to sell, earth works are continuing, engine ers and architects are busy and the construction of the new multi-purpose hall, “Powerhouse” is underway and hoped to be completed by mid 2010. Although the future is bright, our confidence must never ste er away from God... but there is no doubt that the adventure of Providence is exciting. Pastor Rob recalls that during the course of those difficult five years he would have to remind himself that this was God’s choice and not our own.
Although the long journey to Providence, our ‘Promised Land’ has not exactly be en a stroll in the park, our ‘spiritual skin’ has toughened, our faith has be en strengthened, our capacity to believe for more in the supernatural has increased and our understanding of God’s faithfulness has be en brought to a whole new level. So while walking out the five year journey wasn’t our choice, we’re thankful that God patiently and lovingly walked with us (even in our most stubborn times!) until we learnt that His choice, will always be the best choice.

LIFE AT GRASS ROOTS
Remarkable things happen when ordinary people put on their shoes and dare to follow Christ into the great unknown. by Jacques Du Toit
In a world where fame or stardom is often confused for success, we, as
the church, tend to sometimes adopt the ‘Christian superstar mentality’, basing our understanding of success on the great names of our generation. While there are many go od things to be said of the faith and integrity of people like Reinhardt Bonnke, Billy Graham or Darlene Zschech, there is almost

more to be said of the unse en lives of ‘God’s ordinaries’. These are the ones who have stepped out of their comfortable pews unnoticed – perhaps fe eling underqualified or unprepared – but willing to take on the call that God’s put before all of us: “to make disciples of all nations”. No prerequisite for recognition, no desire for fame, simply out of a love for God and a love for people. Some of these unsung heroes of faith are in our very midst. One such man is Bryan*, MCF’s missions representative in China. It was over 10 years ago that his journey with God to ok an adventurous turn and he was led to leave the familiar in exchange for a life lived amongst the lost people of urban central China. With this move came a number of probable challenges: how do you live as a Christian in the world’s greatest Communist nation – with the sole intention of spreading the Gospel? How do you connect with people who lo ok nothing like you, think nothing like you and speak a language that is so complex that one single symbol or sound from it can represent up to 70 different English interpretations? What about finance and health? When asked about the greatest challenges he faces daily, Bryan
* For Bryan’s protection, his full name and identity cannot be released.
“Stay close to Jesus and hear what He has to say...if you don’t hear and obey...you can’t move forward.” BRYAN carefully made this simple, wise statement, “To stay close to Jesus and hear what He has to say every day, because if you don’t hear and obey what He tells you, you can’t move forward.” This lifestyle of persistent submission to our Father’s voice has, over the past few years certainly overcome many of these challenges and brought many lives into the Kingdom. Bryan spends most of his time overseas studying the language (Mandarin), and through that process, connects with the people in his city as God brings them across his way – one by one. The story of Tia (real name not used here for security purposes) is perhaps one of the greatest examples of how God uses relationship to build His Kingdom. Bryan met her in his early years of being in China, when he was still living in another city, and led her to the Lord in 1999 after which he left for Australia. He returned, and so on after found out that Tia’s transformed life led to the conversion of those closest to her, and that she was running her own underground house-group. During the following years, this group has grown and multiplied into several groups, and by late 2007 had reached a congregation of about 500 secret believers. Even more recently, the various house-groups congregated for a Christmas celebration, and more than a thousand people were continued next page...
