LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear McDonogh Family, Surpassing our goal of $90 million is a tremendous accomplishment, especially considering that a great deal has transpired since the campaign was quietly launched in 2017—a global pandemic, political unrest, economic instability, and turbulent local, national, and international landscapes. Despite these challenges, our McDonogh community never wavered in its philanthropic support of the School, and I am incredibly proud of closing the largest fundraising campaign in McDonogh’s history. Your extraordinary commitment to furthering the mission of the School and making a difference in the lives of McDonogh’s students and teachers is truly outstanding, and I am grateful. Simply put, McDonogh is the amazing school it is today because of you.

With the completion of our historic Legacy Campaign on June 30, 2024, the impact is visible and palpable: a magnificent new Middle School building that fosters transformational teaching and learning, incredible endowment support for the people and programs that make McDonogh special, and record-breaking growth of the McDonogh Fund.

I appreciate the partnership of so many individuals who contributed to our success. The campaign started under the leadership of former Headmaster Charlie Britton and spanned multiple Board Presidents including Arthur Adler 1978, the late Howard Klein 1976, Rob Young 1986, and Mike Cummings, who helped to carry out our vision. Endowment is key to sustaining McDonogh’s core commitments, protecting the McDonogh we know, and fueling the McDonogh we aspire to be. Increasing the endowment was an essential part of the campaign, fortifying our ability to deliver an unparalled educational experience for years to come.

With more than $43.8 million in new endowment commitments, we will continue attracting and retaining extraordinary faculty, while also engaging talented students who will benefit from a transformative LifeReady education. Together, they will thrive on our remarkable campus.

McDonogh’s LifeReady academic plan is dependent on our ability to recruit, retain, and support excellent faculty. It requires teachers to deliver our liberal arts curriculum in ways that build intellectual and practical abilities and challenge students to think critically and creatively. Educators must stay current on teaching methods, learning research, and best practices that help them improve their craft.

McDonogh is now well-positioned to continue attracting the best and providing them with the professional development necessary to stay at the top of their fields. With four new teaching chairs and 11 new endowed funds, McDonogh can offer competitive compensation and sustain its investment in classroom excellence by funding conferences, seminars, summer programs, technology education, and travel opportunities. The end result: offering students an exceptional education.

The world around our campus is changing rapidly, and the skills and knowledge our students need to be successful in college and beyond are evolving just as fast. The Legacy Campaign has allowed McDonogh to embrace the challenge and develop mission-driven programming that touches all three divisions. We implemented unique offerings that challenge our students to ask questions, solve problems, build community, grow empathy, and realize their potential to do the greatest good.

McDonogh will be able to stay forward-thinking in its approach and remain at the forefront of academic excellence. Access has been central to McDonogh’s mission since our founding. Over the years, countless deserving students have been offered the opportunity to attend McDonogh, and they have, in turn, positively contributed to the vibrancy of our diverse community. To uphold our commitment to affordability, it was imperative to secure new endowment funds to protect our scholarship resources for years to come.

We are confident in our ability to ensure that a McDonogh education remains accessible to a diverse population of promising students. When we initiated the Legacy Campaign, we set out to build a middle school facility that matched the high quality program we developed for McDonogh students in fifth through eighth grade. We pushed the boundaries of innovation and student-centered learning by constructing a state-of-the-art space that meets the needs of a modern McDonogh education: The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Middle School.

Today’s bright students and the talented faculty who teach them have flexible classrooms that can adapt to various learning scenarios, a 21st-century library, performing and visual arts studios, science labs, an innovation center, and a teaching kitchen. In addition, all classrooms and spaces are centrally located under one roof, which enhances cross-curricular experiences as well as interactions among students and faculty. This new and innovative building will positively impact future generations for years to come. $25.6 MILLION RAISED

Over the last several decades, McDonogh has invested significant time and resources into processing its large archival collections. Archivists envisioned a sophisticated, academic space that would make the School's history accessible to a wide audience.

The Wilson | Young Archives and Special Collections opened in the fall of 2023 in the centrally-located Lyle Building. The renovated space is the first ever designed specifically to house and showcase McDonogh’s extensive collection of manuscripts, photographs, books, maps, art, and artifacts as well as other unique primary source materials of national and international scope. Named in honor of two important members of the McDonogh community—Eddie Wilson, a staff member from 1957 to 1984, and Josepha Young, school matron from 1873 to 1907—this new space allows students from prekindergarten through twelfth grade to learn from the past and make meaningful educational connections. Since its opening, the Archives has been consistently utilized by students, teachers, and alumni who engage first-hand with McDonogh’s history.

“McDonogh is an outstanding school, and we are pleased to help create an inviting space that will inspire creativity and imaginative play in young children.”

Play is an essential part of the learning process. Through exploration, discovery, and interaction with their peers, children exercise their bodies as well as their creativity and imagination. Additionally, play helps children develop important social, emotional, and cognitive skills as they learn to take turns, cooperate with others, and problem-solve.

The state-of-the-art Berman Family Playground was designed to meet the developmental needs of our students and enable them to explore, experiment, and engage in imaginative play. The design features a variety of areas such as The Village, The Beach, The Dunes, The Woodland Path, and The Pollinator Path.

There is also an enhanced sports field, music station, and The Amphitheater.

Lower School students will benefit from endless possibilities for creativity and fun for years to come.

Behind the scenes, McDonogh Fund dollars are at work each and every day helping to make a McDonogh education exceptional. The annual giving program —comprising 6.3% of the School’s operating budget—supports all aspects of a McDonogh education, providing our talented teachers with top-notch resources and enriching the intellectual, social, and personal development of every student. To ensure McDonogh remains robust and vibrant today, and in the years ahead, it was essential to grow this critical resource.

The Legacy Campaign resulted in record-breaking operational support of the McDonogh Fund. A 10.5% growth in annual giving allowed the School to raise $20.2 million and fortify its annual budget.
