For this issue of Plan, we caught up with Ronan Conneely, Regional Director at Avanti Architects. He talked about the importance of socially minded architecture, grounding Avanti’s work in evidence-based design and why he feels the profession is slowly being eroded. The practice has recently completed work on a €10 million primary healthcare centre in Bandon which includes a library, retail and primary care and GP accommodation. It will, says Ronan, serve as an important project for the town in forming a new civic hub for the area. Elsewhere in this issue we take a look at The Sorting Office, designed by Henry J Lyons and described as a “new generation office development”. The Sorting Office in Dublin’s south docklands has achieved LEED Platinum certification along with a BER A3 rating. According to Andy Buchan, Associate at the practice, a collaborative approach was taken by the entire design team in order to achieve the coveted LEED status. The completed development has had a positive impact on its immediate environment, he says, transforming a dilapidated area of the city into a vibrant new urban setting. Also included in this issue is a look at the refurbishment of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin by David Chipperfield Architects. The key to such a complex refurb was finding a suitable balance between monument conservation and the building’s use as a modern museum, says the architects. Interventions to the original fabric within this process had to be reconciled with preserving as much of the original substance as possible; this isn’t a new interpretation said David Chipperfield, but “rather a respectful repair of this landmark building of the International Style.” We hope you enjoy this issue and if you have any comments or opinions, drop me a line at denise@mcdmedia.ie.

Specifier SISK DELIVERS OVER 1,200 HOMES AT WEMBLEY PARK John Sisk & Son in partnership with Quintain is proud to have delivered a combined total of 1,201 new homes at two major new landmark developments E03 Canada Gardens and E05 The Robinson, Wembley Park. Both projects have a combined value of £420 million and were delivered successfully despite the Covid19 pandemic. The completion of these leading Build to Rent developments at Wembley Park, which form part of the estate’s “Eastern Lands”, means Quintain has now completed 65% of the Wembley Park masterplan - one of the most exciting and all-encompassing urban transformation opportunities in Europe. Sisk and Quintain created a football-themed ‘pass it on challenge’ video at Wembley Park to mark this milestone. The video features Sisk and Quintain employees’ children, local supply chain partners, local apprentices and charity partners in the region of Brent celebrating 16 years of collaboration between the two companies. Flagship development Canada Gardens, with 743 Build to Rent (BtR) homes, is the largest at Wembley Park with a project value of £245 million and has been Sisk’s largest UK job. Of these homes, 303 are classed as Discount Market Rent, spread throughout the development to ensure they are tenure blind and all under the management of Quintain Living, as are the market price homes. Beside Canada Gardens, The Robinson development with a contract value of £176.8 million is aimed at sharers, with up to four-bedroom homes. Its playful, unique amenities include rooftop caravans, a hot tub and one of the longest row of sun loungers in the UK at 50 meters long. The Sky Lounge, which wraps around a courtyard on the 16th floor, is accessible by a

seven-meter-long slide from the rooftop and includes a polkadot London Taxi coffee bar. Both projects have Envac integrated, an innovative system that sucks waste and recycling down underground tunnels at 70kph to a collection centre at the edge of Wembley Park, minimising the use of refuse lorries and negating the use of large household bins and ground-floor bin storage facilities for residents. Ajaz Shafi, Managing Director, UK South, John Sisk & Son said: “We are absolutely thrilled to complete our flagship project Canada Gardens and most recently The Robinson at Wembley Park. We have invested significantly in digital and offsite construction to ensure a first-class delivery. We have seen award-winning innovation during these projects and exciting new ways of working to deliver a best-in-class product, including radical digitalisation and our first use of precast panels. The Robinson marks our 11th project in 16 years in partnership with Quintain at Wembley Park. To deliver both Canada Gardens and The Robinson in the midst of the challenges of the

Covid-19 global pandemic is a testament to the resilience and outstanding work ethic of our team and supply chain partners.” Matt Voyce, Executive Director of Construction at Quintain commented: “In 2016, Eastern Lands was simply surface car parking reminiscent of when Wembley Park was purely used for event days. Now, Canada Gardens and The Robinson with over 1,200 new homes have been delivered on time and to budget, through the skill of our exceptional project management teams and contractors. Through the remarkable levels of collaboration, we have been able to work leaner and more efficiently than ever before. Delivering these projects during the uncertainty of Brexit, changing fire safety regulations and a global pandemic has been no mean feat and ultimately a huge success.” On E03 Canada Gardens, 40 per cent of staff were locally employed, with 35 apprentices, 21 of which were local. On E05 The Robinson, 34 per cent were locally employed, with 33 apprentices hired, 22 of which were local.

NEW TREND-LED ANTHRACITE GREY GUTTERING AVAILABLE FROM WAVIN Wavin, Ireland’s leading manufacturer of plastic pipe systems, has updated its DeepLine semi-elliptical guttering range, with a new, sleek ‘anthracite grey’ (RAL 7016) addition. The product matches the increasingly popular colour scheme being used for external windows and doors across Ireland. The development of the new profiled gutter follows a substantial rise in demand for products from Wavin’s rainwater solutions. Declan Conlon, Sales Manager at Wavin Ireland said: “Grey external accents on homes and buildings have been growing in popularity and are now ontrend. By colour-matching prominent yet peripheral features like guttering, buildings can really be brought to life. The neutral tones of the anthracite grey finish also mean this new design is incredibly versatile and looks great when paired with both darker and lighter external colour schemes on modern and traditional architecture.” Wavin’s DeepLine semi-elliptical www.planonline.ie

systems have been engineered to handle more rainwater than similar sized systems, all from a unique hydrodynamic outlet. The specialist seal technology also provides a completely secure, watertight fixture which allows flexibility for thermal expansion on hotter days. DeepLine products are also easy to install as the ‘Flexiclip’ seal jointing mechanism makes it simple to connect gutter units to fittings with an expansion line and stopper, ensuring a reliable and efficient installation every time. To further enhance the look of the guttering systems, these fittings have been engineered with concealed sockets to hide roughly cut downpipe ends, meaning DeepLine now offers the highest levels of practicality and reliability, while blending into existing design aesthetics.
