The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity join with leading PPE manufacturer JSP to shine bright at UK Construction Week

Two well-known and respected names in the construction industry will be appearing together at UK Construction Week to promote their joint effort to help those in the sector who are suffering hardship as a result of injury, ill health or bereavement. The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, an official partner of UK Construction Week, and JSP Ltd, Europe’s leading independent manufacturer of ‘above-the-neck’ personal protective equipment (PPE), are collaborating on a ‘Lighthouse PPE range’ where a proportion of the proceeds will go to the charity to help support their latest initiative – the Construction Industry Helpline. Launched in conjunction with Considerate Constructors, this 24x7 Helpline provides support and advice for everyone in the sector. To date, the Helpline has received more than 500 calls and distributed more than £250,000 in financial aid to assist over 200 construction families in the UK

Is your structural waterproofing design robust enough for a warranty? intended use, and that the risk assessment is produced by someone who is suitably qualified.

Are your structural waterproofing designs based on a waterproofing risk assessment that has been produced by a suitably qualified specialist? Have you appointed a waterproofing specialist at an early stage of the system design to ensure it is suitably integrated with the overall design of the building? Is your waterproofing expert qualified to CSSW structural waterproofing surveyor standard? If the answer is no to any of these questions then a building insurance company is unlikely to issue you with a warranty.

INK Technical Services was established to help housebuilders, architects and other specifiers meet the standards’ requirements so insurance companies are satisfied that a robust waterproofing system is in place. The INK team represents nearly 100 years of structural waterproofing experience and includes CSSW qualified structural waterproofing surveyors. In addition to the production of waterproofing risk assessments, INK Technical Services offers a waterproofing design service; site inspections; reports on failed systems and proposals for remedial measures and approved contractor referrals.

The increase in the provision of residential basements, the development of new types of waterproofing system and the growing number of claims being made following the failure of structural waterproofing systems were all key drivers for recent changes in industry and insurance company standards – and the reluctance of insurance companies to issue warranties if these new recommendations are not followed. Densostrip Concrete Panel Sealant for Grain Stores A,C.Bacon Engineering Ltd of Hingham, Norfolk, who specialise in all types of steel structures and cladding, including agricultural buildings, now use Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd’s Densostrip on grain stores with concrete crop-retaining walls. It is used to seal at the joint between a static, flat-topped concrete panel below floor level, which is tied into the concrete floor slab and the crop retaining panels above the floor level, which are allowed to deflect under load from the crop. Densostrip carries out an important role in this detail allowing movement of the panels above floor level, whilst anything below floor level remains static and maintaining a weather-proof seal between the two. (See photo before concrete floor was installed.) Densostrip is a compound rubber and bitumen joint sealing strip for sealing the joints of precast concrete units to provide a permanently flexible watertight seal when compressed between joint faces previously primed with Densostrip Primer.

Capable of waterproofing and dampThe excellent acoustic insulation proofing internal and external walls and properties of SoundBoard, manufactured by Marmox, has restored peace and quiet in an exclusive West London apartment building, where two flats were being knocked into one. The refurbishment and integration of the adjoining dwellings has been carried out by main contractor, LDB Construction: a specialist in such top end redevelopments across the capital and surrounding counties. As an experienced building and fit out contractor, LDB identified the Marmox SoundBoard as an ideal panel to use in overlaying the concrete subfloor, prior to installing electric underfloor heating coils. SoundBoard offers both acoustic and thermal insulation properties and helps prevent damage to cabling. This build up was then covered with high quality timber flooring in some rooms while marble tiles featured in the rest.

Crown Decorating Centres celebrate record-breaking Kick Out The Can success Staff at seven Crown Decorating Centres across the UK are celebrating the success of a major recycling scheme after being named as regional ‘champions’. Earlier this year Crown Decorating Centres launched the ‘Kick Out The Can’ initiative, encouraging customers to clear out garages, sheds and cupboards and return unwanted paint to the network of more than 130 stores in the UK. And thanks to the commitment of staff the scheme achieved record-breaking results this year with more than 8,600 containers of unwanted paint returned. The unwanted paint collected at Crown

Decorating Centres was then sent for reprocessing and recycling by social enterprise Nimtech ahead of being distributed to community projects around the country in partnership with regeneration charity, Newground. One store from each Crown Decorating Centre region has now been ‘crowned’ Kick Out The Can Champion for team members’ efforts in supporting the campaign and each has been presented with a commemorative certificate to mark their achievements. The stores which achieved the most outstanding results across the country were Inverness, Lincoln, Derby, Southport, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Maidstone. Paula Taylor, Marketing Manager for Crown Decorating Centres, said: “We are delighted that our team members have

given their full support to the Kick Out The Can initiative. “The top performing stores worked really hard to spread the message and collect the unwanted paint, and their support has meant that we’ve achieved record-breaking results this year. “Kick Out The Can is a genuinely virtuous circle in helping the environment and giving back to the community. None of this would have been possible without the outstanding efforts of staff at our Crown Decorating Centres.” To have details of your nearest Crown Decorating Centre sent straight to your mobile, text ‘CROWN’ to 83332. Watco launches multi-use, no waste Putty Patch

Teachers and pupils at a Northamptonshire school are excited to start the academic year in new and modern classroom facilities thanks to the arrival of a sustainable timber framed building. Leading joinery manufacturer, Scotts of Thrapston, were approached by the 210-pupil Weldon Church of England Primary School following an enquiry for a new classroom by the headteacher Lynne Wildman who was looking to replace an old inefficient and ineffective mobile classroom building. She explains: “We had been looking for years for a solution to the problem of an old mobile classroom that was being used for classes of our Key Stage 2 children. I discovered Scotts when I was looking through one of their fliers after it was placed on my desk.

A unique formulation of putty-like consistency, easy to mix, apply and form into shapes, making it ideal for rapid repairs. Watco, the UK’s leading manufacturer of industrial strength flooring products, announces the launch of Putty Patch, a mouldable material designed for quick repairs to concrete. Watco Putty Patch has a unique puttylike consistency, which gives it a huge advantage over conventional repair products. Suitable for both inside and outside use, it can be easily formed into any shape, by hand or trowel, to match the profile of the item being repaired. This makes it suitable for more challenging repairs to curved step nosings, kerbs, balustrades and other moulded stonework and concrete. As Watco Putty Patch is very strong and hardens quickly with an initial set time of around ten minutes, it is the perfect solution for rapid, or emergency repairs to damaged vertical or horizontal surfaces.

The Wraptite System was installed by Edinburgh based façade specialist Charles Henshaw & Sons who have successfully completed numerous prestigious curtain wall and facade contracts throughout the UK. www.mclink.co.uk/861-106 ENQUIRY-Card 106

A seven storey nightclub and office building in Leicester city centre now has a stunning new exterior thanks to VIVIX panels, which were cut to size, drilled and supplied by one of the UK’s leading panel fabricators Panel Systems. The VIVIX façade from Panel Systems means the overclad building is indistinguishable from a new build. Upgrading the existing building structure rather than demolition and new build significantly reduced the capital budget and resulted in a development with a much reduced carbon footprint. The building on Allied Place was in need of updating and the architects appointed building contractors JA Ball Ltd of Leicester to carry out the refurbishment to the façade. The building will retain its nightclub on the first floor, with its second to seventh floor converted to one and two bedroom studios for residential purposes. www.mclink.co.uk/861-107 ENQUIRY-Card 107

New campaign to encourage thousands to ‘Go Construct’ A new online portal supported by a PR and marketing campaign will be launched to help bridge the construction skills challenge. The whole industry is being encouraged to sign up to support the Go Construct Campaign.

Go Construct has been designed in conjunction with partners from across the industry. Its aim is to tackle the root causes of the recruitment issues facing the construction industry and help to attract more than 224,000 people who are needed over the next five years. Go Construct’s new online ‘one stop shop’ at www.GoConstruct.org will educate people about what careers in the industry are really like. A advertising and PR campaign to tackle the misleading stereotypes about the industry, which can put people off construction careers, will support the launch of the website, which can be found at www.GoConstruct.org.uk Facilitated by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the Go Construct Campaign is funded out of the construction levy in order to benefit the whole construction industry. Top British designer, Wayne Hemingway, whose company HemingwayDesigns has worked on a number of construction projects including housing developments such as Hillington Square, King’s Lynn and Staiths South Bank, will front the campaign. Go Construct will also be working with around 9,000 Considerate Constructors sites across the country. As well as the marketing campaign toolkit including adverts and site hoardings, a set of materials has been created including activity plans, myth busters, key facts and videos, to support teachers, career advisors

and employers and to help enthuse people about the opportunities to build a career in the industry. Steve Hindley CBE DL, Chairman of Midas Group Ltd welcomed Go Construct, he said: “Too often in the past, as an industry each of our sector silos have been in competition with each other for the talent we need. With the launch of Go Construct the whole industry will be speaking with one voice to attract the best and brightest talent to choose a career in construction instead of another sector.

“If we are to bridge the skills gaps we face and find the 224,000 additional people we need we must pull together and get behind Go Construct.” Also welcoming the Go Construct campaign, Pat Boyle, Managing Director, Construction at Morgan Sindall plc, said: “Too often have we seen sectors within the construction industry in competition for talent. What this industry really needs is to have one holistic voice to bring in the very best, people who choose a career in construction ahead of any other sector. “If we are to bridge the impending skills gap and attract the more than 224,000 people we need, we must put our full support behind initiatives such as Go Construct.”

S.M.A.R.T HOT WATER (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, and Timely)

Tony Gittings of Rinnai looks at the options of controls on continuous flow hot water heating units. Total control over energy consumption can dramatically reduce fuel bills and achieve significant savings on carbon emissions. High efficiency continuous flow water heaters, which would have previously been isolated in lonely plant rooms, can now be fully connected to building management systems across multi platforms. This expansive level of interoperability for the range of energy efficient condensing gas

Tony Gittings

fired continuous flow water heaters are compatible with the popular forms of Building Management Systems (BMS) used in today’s modern buildings including Modbus and Bacnet. There are great developments of pioneering innovation in technology that will seamlessly integrate hot water heating systems into BMS protocols. The move allows ultimate control and maximises energy efficiencies in large buildings, even in multi-tenanted sites. BMS uses a combination of technologies to monitor and control the environment and functions of large office blocks, industrial, retail or public sector premises. It provides automation, alerting, reporting and control capability, so FM professionals are able to regulate and measure multiple systems in the building from a central point, not necessarily in the building itself. BMS enables and maintain the optimum balance of environmental conditions, energy usage and operational requirements. Traditional energy supply networks are under increasing pressure, with great volatility in supply, so it is essential that as a responsible manufacturer we

do our utmost to produce economical and highly efficient products that will help to limit the overload. As we move towards the utopia of ‘smart’ grids for the distribution of our energy supply and with the development of smart monitoring to support those smart grids there is now a increased need for BMS compatible smart controls for heating and hot water systems to keep energy costs at a manageable level. You wouldn’t leave a car engine running overnight just so it is ready to use in the morning and we must apply the same commonsense approach to buildings. There is no point leaving a gas appliance on all the time when it is only going to be needed to heat hot water at certain times of the day. Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances compatible with sophisticated BMS, allows easy monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy is being wasted. Rinnai goes solo

Long-life boiler gets upgrade at the Radisson Atlantic Boilers of Lancashire have supplied a new Class 5 low NOx condensing boiler to the Radisson Blu Hotel at Portman Square, London to replace their existing installation some 30 years ago. In the 1980’s, the 272 bedroom hotel, in the heart of London’s West End, installed six of the first ever condensing boilers in the UK supplied by Atlantic Boilers. Not only were these boiler efficient to an outstanding level, but they continue to operate after three decades. The new G Series Optimigas boiler has been added the boilerplant which serves the bedrooms, restaurant, conference rooms and gym at the hotel. It was installed by GLP-HVAC Installations & Facilities of Southend-onSea. The latest technology includes a low NOx pre-mix modulating burner and results in further fuel savings of up to www.mclink.co.uk/861-142 15%. ENQUIRY-Card 142

Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, has introduced its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater. The Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX condensing water heater is the first Rinnai product for the UK to combine the advanced technology of its wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one compact footprint. The design parameters of the Rinnai Infinity Solo, enables designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications whereby it was not previously possible. For instance the solo range will incorporate both 35kW and 54kW appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can utilise such technologies. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market. www.mclink.co.uk/861-143 ENQUIRY-Card 143

Giving your business a boost OMNIE from Timoleon offers Energy costs are still high on your customers’ wish list and if you can find simple and inexpensive ways of reducing their bills, there are good opportunities to win some additional business with every job you do. The simple plug-in timer adapters are still sold in their thousands for DIY use, but professional installers can go a lot further with smarter, hard-wired devices which can be set with switching programmes as simple or as complicated as you need. Its horses for courses, so it’s worth spending a bit of time looking through the catalogue or, in the case of Timeguard, having a look at the boxes because the packaging tells you everything you need to know at a glance, in words and pictures. With heating control, the key to comfort is to maintain room temperatures within a 0.5ºC of the desired temperature, a 'comfort window' within which people don't notice a variation in temperature and feel the need to start ‘fiddling’ with the controls. www.mclink.co.uk/861-144 ENQUIRY-Card 144

total controllability

A key consideration in achieving genuine energy efficiency and fuel savings from high performance renewable technologies is having the correct controls: which is why Timóleon's holistic OMNIE range encompasses a comprehensive selection of control units. The company's recently launched offering to the building services sector brings together heat pumps, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), surface cooling and its renowned range of underfloor heating systems; all optimized by utilizing state-of-the-art controls. The entry level sees programmable room thermostats as well as simple Dial thermostats (the latter requiring the use of a separate programmer), which are intended to be used solely with underfloor heating. Both are flush mounted and modern in appearance. www.mclink.co.uk/861-145 ENQUIRY-Card 145

OSO Hotwater first A rated cylinder range OSO Hotwater have announced the first A rated cylinder range available in the UK market under Euro energy labelling system familiar to consumers. Hot water cylinder labelling commences in September this year as a result of the European Energy Related Products Directive (ErP). OSO Delta uses a revolutionary new form of insulation alongside traditional poly-urethane foam in a significant innovation for the industry to achieve a unique A rating for all single coil cylinders up to 300 litres. Delta is the culmination of years of R & D to produce the most energy efficient cylinder possible.

supplied factory fitted with a user friendly digital thermostat that shows the current water temperature and contains holiday and anti-legionella modes.

ErP is a game-changer for the cylinder industry. For the first time, the cylinder efficiency, as calculated by standing heat loss, will be obviously visible to the installer and, equally importantly, to the end user.

Delta will be launched in the autumn from a wide range of plumbers’ merchants.

Other industries have shown that discerning customers will be looking for superior energy ratings and will be prepared to pay for them, offering opportunities for profit to installers of the best products such as the OSO Delta. An A rated Delta in the most popular 210 litre capacity will save around 1kWh of energy every day in comparison to a more standard C rated product. These energy savings will quickly pay back any extra investment in a superior cylinder.

Delta will be available in separate ranges of indirect units suitable for boiler, heat pump and solar thermal.

HYBRID hot water solution tops the green bill Rinnai’s Chris Goggin explains why hybrid technology is an attractive option for reliable and cost effective hot water provision as it becomes abundantly clear that renewables, on their own, just aren’t delivering.

Energy efficient continuous flow condensing gas fired water heaters clearly have their part to play as we head into ‘greener’ country. This ‘tankless’ form of hot water delivery is growing in popularity and offers huge ongoing financial benefits to building owners and tenants

even before the advanced energy saving technologies of the units themselves are taken into account. This makes the argument for their inclusion as a component in a hybrid renewables/gas boosted hot water system even more compelling. It is becoming abundantly clear that there is not one single method to achieve energy efficiencies as renewables on their own just aren’t delivering. There is no point in waiting for the perfect renewable solution to come along we can utilise a very effective mix of existing renewables and traditional technologies. In effect we need to find ways of using current renewables technology, be it solar thermal, solar PV or heat pump technology, in a practical manner maximised by

traditional fuel sources - in this instance, gas, whether Natural or LPG. Modern renewables-ready heavy-duty condensing water heater units guarantee the highest efficiencies and therefore the lowest running costs of any commercial water heater. In short, a HE unit used as a gas booster for solar or ASHP systems maximises solar gain, as it only consumes energy when more hot water than the panels can cope with is needed. The rest of the time the unit is inactive. The use of evacuated tube or flat plate solar collectors can make a big difference when paired with condensing continuous flow water heaters as a boost. Doesn’t it make sense to store the free energy collected by an array of solar panels within in a solar thermal store which can be heated to the required temperature on demand by a gas fired water heater or the water to the outlet can be easily boosted,

taking advantage of the expansive range of modulation associated with Rinnai technology. A gas fired continuous flow water heater is also the only booster that ensures neverending hot water – no matter how fierce the demand. Fossil fuel is only used when the renewable store is below its set-point, thus reducing the dependency on fossil fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. Renewables ready Rinnai Infinity condensing HDC1200 internal and external models show an impressive energy performance of 107 per cent net efficiency while the larger Rinnai HDC1500 models turn in 105 per cent net efficiency*. For large commercial, operations Rinnai has just launched the Infinity HDC1600i, its premium condensing water heater which has been tested to below 20 ppm NOx, producing the lowest emissions on the market, with 107 per cent gross

Low Carbon, High Thermal Efficiency Pipe for Plymouth City Heating Scheme Flexenergy's energy-saving Flexalen pipe was the ideal solution for Plymouth City Council when a new district heating scheme meant rerouting the pipe network from new gas boilers to serve offices in the Council House.

The Civic Centre, located alongside the Council House, had a gas boiler system which served the council offices. The Civic Centre is being serviced separately to enable its disposal for redevelopment. The Council House will now be fed from the new Guildhall boiler installation via the underground heating pipework. Plymouth City Council specified Flexalen polybutylene pre-insulated pipe for the project – choosing the technology for its enhanced thermal properties, low embodied carbon, ease of installation and 50 year performance

warranty. Contractors ECS have installed the network comprising of 31in no 12 metre lengths of pipework and 16 prefabricated bends, insulation kits and stub flanges. Polybutylene is the only plastic pipe heat network system that can be fully fusion welded. This, together with its proven longevity, was a key factor in laying the 372 metres of pipe from the Guildhall, across a pedestrianised area to the Council House. Moreover, the environmentally-friendly attributes of the pipe’s Pb technology and its low carbon manufacture, also helped meet sustainability goals, which were very important considerations given that the scheme is set to include biomass energy generation in due course. Plymouth City Council expects the upgraded heating system to save £10,000 a year through energy efficiency, thereby optimising its whole life investment in district heating – savings achieved in part through Flexenergy’s environmentally-friendly, low carbon pipe technology and network design. www.mclink.co.uk/861-527 ENQUIRY-Card 527

efficiencies*. The Infinity 1600i low NOx series is available with an output of 58.4 kW producing 16.2 litres of temperature controlled hot water per minute (or 9.73 per hour) raised at 50°C. That is .2 litres a minute more than the existing Rinnai Infinity 1500 HDC. *Tested and certificated by Technigas to EN 26. For more details on RINNAI products visit www.rinnaiuk.com

New Seashell Trust Heating Scheme benefits from Flexalen Pipe Technology

CPL Building Services chose Flexenergy’s Flexalen pipework to install a new underground district heating system for the Cheshirebased charity, Seashell Trust. The charity provides a creative and secure environment for children and adults with complex and severe learning disabilities, which include little or no language abilities. It is home to the Royal School Manchester, a nonmaintained special school, and the Royal College Manchester, an independent specialist further education college. Both the school and college are residential and the new heating scheme will initially serve nine houses from an energy centre, but has capacity to supply another phase of houses and other buildings. The installation was part of an ongoing redevelopment of the site – part of the

charity’s £20 million Transforming Lives Appeal - and didn’t come without its challenges; a high water table meant that the ground was frequently waterlogged making conditions problematic and often impossible for laying new pipework. “Cost, quality, efficiency and our previous experience of working with Flexalen pipework were all important factors when choosing the best pipework for this project,” explains Geoff Ferguson, Senior Project Engineer at CPL. “The Flexalen pre-insulated pipe system installed was the ideal technology for this situation being lightweight and highly flexible making it easier to install, especially in the often atrocious ground conditions we were faced with. The water tight bond between the corrugated outer pipe and the polyolefin insulation offers additional protection against water seeping in, helping to maintain the robust technical qualities of the pipe system.” As a result of this project, the Seashell Trust now benefits from an efficient heating system with low carbon emissions and pipework that is guaranteed for 50 Years! www.mclink.co.uk/861-528 ENQUIRY-Card 528

New Rye Tilting Rail to Sussex Range of Heated Towel Rail

Taking bathroom elegance and comfort to a new level, JIS Europe Ltd. has launched a new offering under its Sussex Range of heated towel rails. The Rye Tilting Rail has been designed to resemble a sleek, ultra modern ladder, leaning casually and lightly against the wall in a clever design twist. Indeed, the spaced out slats arrangement has negated the old problem of trying to force a plump, fluffy towel between the often too small gaps typical of competing brands while at the same time favouring the minimalist fashion favoured by many interior designers nowadays. The Rye range of towel rails is available in three different heating formats: these being electric only, dual fuel and the ability to be utilized solely with central heating. The rails are also suitable for open plumbing systems. Measuring 1800mm x 520mm – tapering to 300mm at the top, the JIS element is constructed from 100% stainless steel, with a built in thermostat to prevent the rail from becoming too hot and, of course, to reduce running costs. With a BTU rating of 1878, the rail consumes just 550 Watts;

while each one is manufactured with standard 1/2” BSP tappings and is pressure tested to 12 Bar. Offering a choice of either satin or a highly polished steel surface, all Rye towel rails are hand finished by the company’s craftsmen to ensure the highest quality is maintained; so it is no surprise that JIS is confident enough to offer its usual noquibble 25 year guarantee. All towel rails manufactured by JIS are fabricated from 100% 304 grade stainless steel, including the brackets of which over 90% is from recycled sources – while the steel itself is 100% recyclable at end of life. There are no chemical plating processes in the manufacture of stainless steel, which ensures the rails will not rust, flake or corrode and small marks can simply be polished out making them a durable as well as an attractive and e nv i ro n m e n t a l ly - f ri e n d ly choice. The Sussex Range’s latest towel rails have a recommended retail price of just £449.50 + VAT, while the design of JIS’s new Rye Tilting Rail ensures there is sufficient space to keep the whole family’s towels warm and dry.

THE NEW NEWICK 1200

The “Newick 1200” from JIS Europe has been designed to fit under windows, so often the only space available for a towel rail, but up until now, most ladder type towel rails have been too tall to fit under most windows.

The Newick is available in a height of 600mm and in two widths of 750mm and 1000mm and now a new 1200 wide version is available The rail is manufactured in the same high quality as all the JIS rails and is suitable in Central Heating, Electric and Dual Fuel formats. The rail is available in polished

100% stainless steel as standard with the option of brushed satin finish if desired. This member of the impressive Sussex range of heated towel rails, with its classic slim styling, will blend into any bathroom or cloakroom, and further more JIS offer the Newick 1200 with a 25 year guarantee.

Adur Towel Rails JIS EUROPE of Haywards Heath have an exciting range of heated towel rails under the banner of their Sussex Range. Named The ADUR, the towel rails are manufactured in an elegant round section shape with a gentle curve front displaying an appearance of refined luxury. The rails are manufactured in three

sizes 1250mm high x 400mm, 520mm and 620mm wide. They can be used in central heating, electric or dual fuel formats. The Adur towel rails come with 20 horizontal rails offering a large towel hanging facility. The Adur towel rails are manufactured in 100% stainless steel and are available in brushed satin or polished finish making these towel

rails durable and hygienic. They also come with a 25 year guarantee. JIS EUROPE, one of the leading suppliers of modern styled towel rails, point out that steel does not corrode, chip, flake or bubble. It is durable, easy to clean, totally hygienic and it retains a high quality appearance throughout a long life. JIS also claim that their stainless steel

towel rails transmit up to 30% more heat than plated appliances and point to the ecological advantages of stainless steel in that it is produced from a minimum of 90% recycled metal, manufactured environmentally and is itself 100% recyclable. The Adur range is a must for the discerning home-owner or specifier.

A++for Ecodan renewable heating range Mitsubishi Electric has announced that its entire range of Ecodan air source heat pumps has achieved A++ rating under the first Energy Related Products (ErP) Directive ruling for heating products across Europe. ErP means that all space and water heaters will need to display an energy label which will help both residential and commercial customers identify the most energy-efficient products on the market and brings heating products into line with other energy consuming goods such as fridges and washing machines. From the 26th September, ErP will apply to domestic and commercial heating and hot water products, including electrical powered heating, gas and oil boilers, water heaters and cylinders, as well as renewable technologies such as solar thermal and heat pumps. To highlight the requirements under ErP Mitsubishi Electric has also released a short video which explains how the Directive is designed to help phase out lower performing products whilst having a positive impact on the emissions levels across Europe and increase the share of renewable energies by 20 per cent. “There are two parts to the ErP strategy which affect both manufacturers and installers and everyone involved needs

to understand how this will change the heating market”, explains James TimbsHarrison, on behalf of the company. “Firstly, under what is called the EcoDesign regulations, manufacturers will need to produce energy-using products that meet stringent energy performance standards. Secondly, under Energy Labelling regulations, these products must be clearly labelled using a standard method so that consumers can make a direct comparison between individual products and different technologies”. These labels will show the efficiency ranging from the most efficient A++ to the least efficient G and will be clearly marked with coloured bars; from green (the most efficient) all the way down to red (least efficient). The details on the label will identify the efficiency band for heating, and where relevant, hot water production and where relevant, noise, emissions and power consumption. “For heat pumps they will also indicate the three different climate zones within Europe which is important here because the UK is split between all three of these zones”, adds Timbs-Harrison. “We feel that this is now levelling the playing field for heating products which

Minimise heat loss & maximise Inta turns on the style savings with new 50L buffer tank with new radiator valves

Panasonic’s brand new 50L buffer tank is now available and is ideal as a volume extension vessel or low-loss header tank, maximising the effectiveness of Aquarea heat pump applications in properties large or small. Buffer tanks are used with air source heat pumps to increase volume, provide storage and to prevent short cycling of the heat pump, and therefore deliver a more efficient system to the user. This new addition to the Aquarea range is cost and energyefficient, and requires little to no maintenance once installed within a property. With Automated Air Vent (AAV) capabilities, the new Aquarea 50L buffer tank will maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of current heating applications. The unit lends itself for a quick and easy install. With two plugs, PU isolation and an aesthetically pleasing white cover, this small tank is wall mounted and therefore perfect for properties were space is tight. www.mclink.co.uk/861-112 ENQUIRY-Card 112

Continuing to grow its largest-ever plumbing and heating collection, British manufacturer Inta has unveiled its new range of chrome thermostatic and decorative radiator valves. Created to accompany stylish, designer radiators, Inta has introduced a polished chrome version of its best-selling i-therm thermostatic radiator valve, which features a liquid-filled sensor, frostprotection setting and anti-chatter cartridge to eliminate post-installation noise. With its flexible bi-directional design allowing it to be fitted in any orientation and with water flowing in either direction, the i-therm is the installer’s go-to valve for retrofit and tricky installations as well as new ones. Designed to enhance the look of feature radiators, Inta has also introduced five new decorative valves to its range, replacing the traditional, white valves with an elegant new look. www.mclink.co.uk/861-113 ENQUIRY-Card 113

will allow consumers to see exactly how energy efficient the types of heating they choose are”. ErP is a significant piece of legislation that will have a major impact on the sale and use of heating systems in the UK. As such, the requirements of ErP is already being embedded into legislation on the energy efficiency of buildings and as incentive schemes for renewable technologies. In order to apply for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments, heating systems will now needs to comply with the Microgeneration Certification

Solar PVs for Prestigious Reading Office Development Installation of an integrated solar PV system has just been completed at 1 Forbury Place, Reading. The property is among the biggest speculative office developments yet to be seen in the Thames valley.

Reading based Photon Energy Ltd was appointed to design and install a solar PV system for part of the roof and the south, east and west façades of the eight storey building, by Briggs & Forrester a leading building services engineering company. The main contractor for the £38m project was Galliford Try. The solar PV system is one element of an ambitious range of measures designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating and an EPC rating of B, and, unusually, has been designed and installed to form an integral part of the building. The system comprises 292 Upsolar 250Wp modules in total, to give a power output of 73kWp, together with five Huawei inverters to covert the DC power into AC. Both the modules and inverters were chosen for a combination of cost and technical reasons. The projected annual carbon saving is 26,110kg. Having won the contract on the basis of highly competitive pricing and good communications with the building services contractor, Photon Energy’s highly qualified professional engineers completed the detailed design work over a period of two months, earlier this year. The installers comprised three electricians and three roofers, who worked on the building over a number of weeks, usually in teams of two, three or four people. The major challenges they faced were working in conjunction

with many other trades on site and mounting a proportion of the modules vertically as a façade to act as a plant screen. The installation is also unusual in that three different types of mounting system were needed to ensure the energy requirement was met. A ballasted mounting system was used for the 46 PV modules installed on the flat roof. Two trapezoidal roof mounting systems, each housing 20 modules, were used on the roofs of the switch room and stair core and a further 206 modules have been vertically mounted on the south, east and west façades of the building to screen the rooftop plant. The vertical mountings required bespoke heavy duty rail, fixed on steel posts spaced 3.75m apart in some locations. This is a very significant span to cover by regular PV mounting system standards. Jonathan Bates, director and general manager at Photon Energy said: “We enjoy the very considerable challenges of designing and installing integrated solar PV systems, and this project has been no exception. It’s simple to install retrofit UFH Thanks to developments in retrofit underfloor heating (UFH) over the last few years, it’s now easier than ever before to install this type of heating system in renovation project. Innovative retrofit systems simply sit directly on top of the existing floor meaning that there’s no longer any need to spend time and money digging up floors to benefit from UFH. In this article, we’re taking a closer look at Nu-Heat’s LoPro™10, one of the original and most popular UFH solutions for renovations on the market, that plumbers, builders and even DIYers are installing across the country.

5. Finishing touches Finally, simply mix and pour a small amount of selflevelling compound to cover the castellated panels placed around the room edges and leave to dry for 24 hours. The floor coverings can be fitted the next day.

LoPro™10 quick facts • LoPro™10 uses slim gypsum boards that are laid directly on top of the existing floor • The boards are pre-routed, so you know exactly where to install the tube • It only adds 15mm to the floor height and floor coverings are fitted directly on top • Because there is no screed involved, work in other areas of the property can continue as normal

Installed in 5 simple steps Installing LoPro™10 is simple, even if you have never worked with UFH before. Every system includes a bespoke design as well as award-winning manuals, so you know exactly where to place the manifolds, boards and UFH tube. There are just five key steps to follow:

1. Prepare the floor As with all retrofit UFH, preparing the floor beforehand is essential. Clear the floor area and repair and level the floor, if required, using a selflevelling compound. In suspended timber floors you should also replace or screw down any uneven boards.

2. Lay the panels on top of the floor Lay the pre-routed panels on top of the floor following the system design drawings. You will also lay a small amount of castellated panel around the edge of rooms to make the tube runs back to the UFH manifold far easier.

3. Install the tube Run the 10mm UFH tube from the manifold to each designed zone and back, pressing it into the channels of the pre-routed boards.

4. Over to the plumber Your plumber can now come in to fill and pressure test the system, checking everything works as expected. This is a crucial step in any UFH installation, as it ensures the system is watertight before going on to lay the final floor covering.

Installing retrofit UFH really is that simple! Find out more about LoPro™10 and other retrofit UFH solutions on Nu-Heat’s website: www.nu-heat.co.uk/lopro Contact: Tel: 01404 540650 or www.nu-heat.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/861-540 ENQUIRY-Card 540

Mapei wood floor system specified at

The Beaumont Hotel, Mayfair Mapei’s complete wood floor system has been used to install oak flooring at a new hotel in Mayfair, The Beaumont Hotel. Grand in style, the elegant hotel, which has a distinct Grade II listed Art Deco façade, was developed by Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, in partnership with renowned restaurateurs Corbin & King. The interiors were designed by Richmond International and fitted-out by Chorus. Traditional fumed oak herringbone wood flooring was specified alongside Mapei’s eco system and installed, by AJK Wood Flooring, throughout all suites, bedrooms and public areas.

Altro brings colour, design flair & enhanced protection to pioneering London Trust

The hotel’s 1920’s Manhattanstyle interior features over 1,300m2 of FSC and PEFCcertified Weitzer Fumed Oak Parkett, which combines a classic design with a stunning dark aesthetic. To prepare the subfloor, Mapei’s low VOC primer - Eco Prim T - was specified to improve the adhesion of levelling compounds. Mapei’s Ultraplan Renovation screed was then applied, prior to installation of the engineered flooring using Mapei Ultrabond Eco S955 1K– a single component isocyanate and solvent-free, sililated polymerbased adhesive. For more information on the project and Mapei product systems, please visit www.mapei.co.uk, email ukmarketing@mapei.co.uk or tel. +44 (0)121 508 6970.

A range of Altro flooring and wall cladding is being used at Whittington Health in north London, to help create a more relaxing, visually-appealing space in two new facilities, and provide enhanced protection in the Emergency Department (ED). Whittington Health provides general hospital and community services to 500,000 people living in north London. Eighteen months ago, the Trust opened two new facilities: a pioneering £3m Ambulatory Care Centre, which offers patients of all ages greater opportunity to have same-day emergency treatment; and a Rapid Assessment Unit, which is helping to improve triage for the ED. Both of these new projects feature Altro safety flooring and hygienic wall cladding, which was used to create a contemporary, colourful and more relaxing space for patients, while also providing the highest levels of safety, hygiene and reliability. Architect Levitt Bernstein was tasked with designing the new facilities. Project architect Ben Monteagle explains Whittington Health’s vision for these new spaces, and how he brought it to life with a striking, yet practical solution. “The aim for the Ambulatory Care Centre was to create a space that didn’t look clinical or institutional,” says Ben. “The Trust wanted patient wellbeing to be a key factor, using a design that flowed, that was relaxing, colourful, visually appealing, full of light and with large open spaces where patients could relax and feel at home. In essence, a contemporary area that didn’t look like a hospital.

www.mclink.co.uk/861-562 ENQUIRY-Card 562

“Our realisation of that vision was to use colours in very creative ways through wall artwork depicting local scenery, such as Hampstead Heath, woodland and ponds. “We were delighted when Altro suggested we use their Altro Whiterock Digiclad wall cladding for the artwork as this was a cost-effective way to integrate artworks within a clinical environment. Altro Whiterock Digiclad is robust and easy to maintain, and it absolutely met our aim to integrate practical with aesthetics. It the ideal medium for artwork in a clinical setting, and gave us a lot of scope for design.” Altro Whiterock Digiclad offers the option of digitally printed design on wall surfaces, creating impactful and creative graphics. This is achieved by reproducing a photographic image or Vector Art over a whole wall. Using 2.5mm thick Altro Whiterock as its medium, the hard-coat technology of Altro Whiterock Digiclad has scratch resistant properties for added surface protection. This makes it ideal for environments where durability is paramount. Ben Monteagle continues: “We also developed a way-finding strategy, to help patient navigation, which uses coloured leaves embedded into the flooring. The flooring itself needed to be very practical, with excellent slip resistance, and a neutral base which would act as a good backdrop for the colourful design within the centre.” www.altro.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/861-563 ENQUIRY-Card 563

Rehau Heritage Vertical Sliders Wins Conservation Office Approval

Jonathan Horner and his company Paternoster Properties were initially refused permission to replace the original single glazed timber box sash windows in the four storey Victorian building with PVC-U alternatives but, with support from REHAU, Jonathan used an appeals surveyor to convince the conservation officer that the REHAU Heritage windows were an appropriate alternative.

replicate the originals with slim arched head profiles and run through sash horns which would mimic the shapes, proportions and detailing.

The REHAU Heritage vertical slider is already extensively approved for use in conservation areas around the UK and REHAU’s commercial sales manager, Kevin O’Neill, was able to support the appeal to the local conservation officer in Eastbourne with examples of similar installations elsewhere. He was also able to provide technical data and scaled drawings to show how well the Roseview manufactured windows could

Jonathan Horner explained: “Our priority was to restore the façade of Beverly Court so that the building would once again be an elegant part of Eastbourne’s historic seafront. We deliberately chose the custom made REHAU Heritage windows because they are

“Just as importantly though, we felt that, by choosing windows in PVC-U we would be improving the energy efficiency of the building, cutting fuel costs for our tenants and eliminating the requirement for costly ongoing maintenance and the attendant scaffolding associated with painting and repairing timber box sashes. “While the conservation officer refused our original application in 2013, the material we provided during the appeal helped to convince him that

the REHAU Heritage vertical sliders were a suitable choice and, now that they are installed, the windows look truly stunning.” Willie Kerr, Managing Director of Roseview Windows who worked closely alongside REHAU to ensure that the finished windows were wholly sympathetic to the original building added: “Our REHAU Heritage sash window, which we call the Ultimate Rose, incorporates an exclusive stylish run-through sash horn designed to replicate the fine details you would find on a timber sash window. The runthrough sash horn was developed by the R&D team here at Roseview and was a key factor in helping us win this

contract.” The installation was carried out by the team from Hastings Glass who will also be installing casement windows fabricated by 1st Class Windows in the REHAU TOTAL70 PVC-U system to the side and rear elevations of the block. www.mclink.co.uk/861-570 ENQUIRY-Card 570

Hörmann’s entrance doors offer insulation and security

Whether working on a new build or refurbishment project, the rising cost of energy means that minimising heat loss is more important than ever. Architects and specifiers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, to meet both legislative demands and the changing needs of homeowners.

ThermoPlus steel entrance door collections are a prime example. Offering excellent UD-values, at just 1.1W/(m2.K) and 0.82W/(m2.K) respectively, they benefit from rigid steel polyurethane-filled door leaves of 46mm or 65mm thick. Therefore, these doors are ideal for insulation-conscious refurbishment projects and low carbon new builds, and as a result, they will have a noticeable impact on energy bills.

A good UD-value (the U-value of the fitted door) is of the utmost importance when choosing products, but builders still face the challenge of achieving high levels of insulation without compromising on style, security or ease of use. Leading garage and entrance door manufacturer Hörmann has paid close attention to all of these factors when designing its popular ranges.

Security is also a key feature of Hörmann’s ThermoPro and ThermoPlus, thanks to multi-point locking. Conical swing, security and lock bolts pull the door tightly shut, while further security bolts on the hinge side make it practically impossible to force open.

The

company’s

doors in the ThermoPro range have been allocated Police-approved Secured by Design status. Having passed stringent tests set by the Association of Chief Police Officers, these doors are some of the most secure on the market. Another ground-breaking duo of highly insulated entrance doors from Hörmann is the ThermoSafe and ThermoCarbon. These aluminium doors feature some of the lowest UD-values available, at just 0.8W/(m².K) and 0.47W/(m².K). With 9point locking as standard on the ThermoCarbon, and 5-point locking on the ThermoSafe, they are also extremely break-in resistant.

whether you're looking to create a contemporary or traditional look, Hörmann has the products and expertise needed. For more information, contact the service team on 01530 516 888 or visit www.hormann.co.uk.

As with most Hörmann entrance doors, a wide range of finishes, colours, glazing options and matching side elements are available, whatever the budget. So www.mclink.co.uk/861-573 ENQUIRY-Card 573

On mortice and tenon constructed doors, hardwood cores are meticulously controlled with only the best parts of the timber used for this purpose. Such is the extent of the innovative range of designs, finding an external door to meet any specification is almost a formality. These external doors, when glazed are designed to meet all industry standards and utilises insulating multiple pane glass units, ensuring reduced heat loss and enhanced soundproofing.

All external doors are supplied unfinished for on-site staining or painting, are FSC certified and EUTR compliant carrying a 5 year manufacturers guarantee. They can also be used for refurbishment projects if a thermally efficient, insulating door is preferred. Sheerframe doors can resist the floods Sheerframe flood doors, from Synseal, have been independently accredited and Kitemarked to meet the specifications of PAS 1188-1 (Flood Protection Products Part 1: Building Aperture Products) for single and double doors. At the respected test centre at HR Wallingford, inward opening Sheerframe PVC-U doors recorded “no leakage” at 0.6 metre external submersion under static test over 48 hours. The doors also remained watertight under dynamic tests simulating waves and rapidly moving water. French doors are also approved with just 0.001 litres of ingress after 48 hours, which compares most favourably to the standard test pass leak rate of up to 1000 ml/m/hour. Sheerframe flood doors not only hold water out but, unlike the alternative of flood boards, they function easily and look like normal doors. In addition, they are fitted with specialist hardware to provide near impregnable watertightness and achieve PAS 24 levels of security. www.mclink.co.uk/861-133 ENQUIRY-Card 133

Two Hauraton surface drainage systems installed at Maltby Academy School, Rotherham. Early in 2012 it was decided refurbish the older building at Maltby Academy and build a new open plan business / enterprise centre and sport science block. In addition, the old gymnasium was to be converted into a performing and creative arts facility.

The £10.9 million contract for the redevelopment was awarded to BAM Construction of Leeds, in June 2012. The site was fully operational by September 2013. Architects for the new buildings were Bond Bryan, Sheffield office. With the site being quite flat, and the old and new buildings’ surrounded by paved and asphalted surfaces, it was essential rainwater is drained effectively. Two Hauraton channel systems were chosen to drain surface water: RECYFIX® PRO 100 with FIBRETEC® C250 gratings for the asphalted yards and car park and RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels for the paved walkways, these providing an unobtrusive, narrow line of slots in the paved surfaces. www.drainage-projects.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/861-577 ENQUIRY-Card 577

Advantages of Conservation rooflights Discerning home owners, builders and developers are fast realising the advantages of Conservation rooflights. More and more frequently they are being specified as an alternative to modern looking rooflights. Their Victorian style appearance is particularly suitable in all types of projects but real benefits can be gained by fitting them in to traditional buildings and especially those that are listed or situated in a Conservation Area. Because their design is based upon products that were originally made over a century ago they look just right in

many buildings where a later version is perhaps not in keeping. Modern rooflights are often made from a single pane of glass with a very slim outer frame and perhaps a similar opening light. In the past this isn’t how rooflights were made and so the appearance is perhaps not entirely right for the property being renovated. The main advantage of Conservation rooflights is their low profile. Unlike other rooflights or skylights which can look ‘shoe box like’ on a pitched roof. Conservation rooflights are fitted flush with the tile or slate, if added correctly they do not detract from the

appearance of your property. Their main distinguishing feature is the ‘T Bar’ down the centre of the window pane (in the two pane version, three panes are available) which is taken from the original pattern, this adds to their character giving a certain specific ‘charm’! Clement have a range of Conservation rooflights which are competitively priced and are available from stock. Bespoke sizes are also offered which can be essential if you live in a listed building where you need to replace like for like. Clement Windows Limited a family

owned company, specialise in the design and manufacture of bespoke steel windows, doors and Conservation rooflights. www.clementwindows.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/861-604 ENQUIRY-Card 604

Guardian Roof Launches New Seal of Professional Production Quality for Manufacturers Guardian Roof has launched a new industry-leading seal of production quality and excellence guarantee.

From September, Guardian manufacturers will be awarded the status of ‘Professional Production Facility’ which guarantees excellence in production of the Guardian Warm Roof System. Better still, it offers complete production peace of mind for Team Guardian installers - the UK’s largest network of solid roof system installers. For Guardian Joe Kearney said: “We believe this is the most rigorous seal of manufacturing

quality our industry has ever seen. It covers every element of production, delivery and support to help manufacturers maintain the standards for which Guardian is renowned. Our new standard takes our entire supply chain to a new level and includes a comprehensive audit system to ensure that all manufactured roofs are consistent right across the country. “But it goes further than that. The pioneering guarantee of excellence means our Team Guardian installers know they can count on any Guardian manufacturer quality. Not only do we guarantee that the product will be exactly as requested and described to exact building standards; but we

also pack, label and supply all components specifically for ease of each installation.” The seal of excellence also formalises the famous Guardian Roof pre-build: Before every Guardian roof leaves the manufacturing facility, it is built to completion prior to despatch. Then, every single component is carefully labelled and packed for ease of installation when on site. Guardian Warm Roofs leave each manufacturing facility ready for installation, including all fixings and insulations. Guardian even offers full technical support and on-site assistance with new installers first installation. Last month, Guardian Roof celebrated selling over 15,000 roofs throughout the UK In just 10 years. In September last year Guardian Roof launched a new membership drive targeting a total of 400 accredited installers by 2016. Joe Kearney added: “Our Team Guardian membership drive is going from strength to strength. And we expect more installers to join the team thanks to the peace of mind our new Professional Production Facility status and excellence guarantee will bring. “In just ten years, we have built partnerships with hundreds of installers and some of the UK’s finest fabricators. Their support for our unique business model and hard work is now paying off in massive success for the brand. “We remain hugely grateful to each and every one of our skilled fabricators and our incredible network of skilled Team Guardian Installers. We thank them for their efforts, belief and trust in the UK’s market-leading solid lightweight warm roof solution.” 'More information about Team Guardian is available by calling 0808 281 9510 or visiting www.jointeamguardian.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/861-588 ENQUIRY-Card 588

Kemper System Roof Will Mature At Cheadle Care Home

Residents at a new care home in Cheadle, Cheshire, will be able to enjoy the greenery of the building’s parkland setting on their roof terraces thanks to a green roof installation from Kemper System. Constructed and operated by Care UK, Abney Court is located in the historic grounds of Abney Hall and will provide round-the-clock residential and specialised care, including provision for residents with dementia, palliative care and end of life care. The contemporary building features a flat roof and a balcony at first floor level and Kemper System’s solvent free Kemperol 2K-PUR cold liquidapplied system has been used to provide the waterproofing membrane for all areas of the roof and balconies. The root-resistant and U/V stable waterproofing system also forms an integral part of the green roof build up installed on selected areas of the roof terraces as a feature that connects the new development with its natural surroundings.

Comments Stuart Hicks from Kemper System: “The effectiveness of the Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing membrane used to create the watertight barrier between the roof substrate and the green roof system is the most critically important element of the specification. The membrane is flexible enough to cope with any post build ‘settlement’, tough and durable enough to cope with the planting medium and has a sufficiently long service life to make the green roof viable.” Comments Kevin Cawston from Cawston Roofing: “The use of areas of green roof on this very modern building has created a synergy between the care home and the grounds. “Using the same waterproofing membrane for the green roof build up as we did for the rest of the roof made management of the installation much simpler and the planting will provide a living feature that changes with the seasons.” www.kempersystem.co.uk www.mclink.co.uk/861-590 ENQUIRY-Card 590

Be sure to be warranty-wise Engaging sales brochure By Janine Brady - Marketing Manager, SIG Roofing Warranties are available for most details celsius solid roof products and the roofing industry is no exception. Having a warranty means it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to repair or replace a product that has become defective in use - provided it has been installed correctly. However, how many of us really consider the detail of a warranty when purchasing? Experience shows that understanding the fine print of a warranty is essential for both you and your customer. There are many different warranties available, and we often have a number of warranties for one job! With the cover ranging from a matter of years to a lifetime, combined with exclusions and ‘Acts of God’ warranties can be complex to manage and understand. So, how do we ensure we get the cover we need? It pays to deal with reputable companies who offer assurance that they will uphold their warranties.

Installer and homeowner enquiries for Synseal’s innovative Celsius Solid Roof are now fully supported by an informative new sales brochure entitled “Quick to fit, strong and warm… the right roof for the job.” This engaging and well-presented 24page publication provides full technical details to illustrate how the product components are delivered to site in kit format to exactly meet project specifications and then swiftly fitted together to build a truly warm roof construction. Celsius Solid Roof uses a skeleton of specially-engineered C24 construction grade structural timbers to form ridge and hip assemblies that neatly receive the Kingspan TEK Building System structural insulated panels and, because no aluminium is used, any possibility of cold bridging is eradicated.

Roof window specialist campaigns to save Britain’s attics There are 23.3 million homes in England, out of which 79% are houses, according to the Department for Communities and Local Government’s most recent report. And with Britain’s dwellings averaging the smallest floor space in Europe, at 85 m2, aren’t homeowners missing a trick by not fully exploiting the capabilities of the existing housing stock? A roof window specialist has kicked off its campaign to help boost living space in the UK by creating awareness on the dormant potential of lofts. Adrian Cooper of LB Roof Windows said: “We want to ‘save Britain’s attics’ from neglect or from being used for storing clutter, especially when there’s such a stringent need for more living space. Smarter EWI specification It’s estimated that there are around 7.8 million solid walled homes in the UK. With energy efficiency and the associated cost savings becoming more important and recognised by government, local authorities, housing associations and the general public, there’s a clear and pressing demand to upgrade the energy performance of these properties.

Refurbishent funding schemes, such as ECO, make external wall insulation (EWI) - which prevents energy loss in homes without cavity walls - an attractive choice for homeowners and contractors alike. In most cases contractors are buying complete, prescribed EWI systems direct from manufacturers. This is great for the manufacturer; they cut out the middle man, usually a merchant or insulation distributor, and have controlled distribution over their product. However, this offers little choice and even less flexibility for the aforementioned contractors and specifiers. Supplying through partnerships with distributors is the first step towards driving choice, value and more importantly quality in this industry. Currently the choice is very limited at the sales desk, with Climatherm from Bostik being one of the few systems distributed in this way. This makes the product much more accessible to certified contractors and removes one of the purported barriers of entry into this market for tradesmen. Bostik continues to add more distribution partners and works with them to expand the specification of Climatherm while maintaining Board of Agrément (BBA) approval at every stage. By working closely with a growing list of approved EWI system component providers, Bostik and its distribution partners ensure BBA Certification is maintained and controlled throughout the supply chain. This unique supply chain route offers efficiency in every sense; efficient supply through reduced lead times, local stocking and local installation, and efficient energy use via improved insulation and reduced heat loss in existing housing stock. SUNDOLITT XPS – HELPS PROVIDE A WARM ROAD TO RECOVERY AT POLICE TREATMENT CENTRE

Sundolitt XPS, extreme strength, extruded polystyrene is helping provide high insulation levels, strength and rigidity to a new swimming pool which

will play an important role in the rehabilitation of injured and sick police officers from Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The pool installation, at Castlebrae Police Treatment Centre in Auchterarder, Perthshire, is part of a £2.5 million redevelopment to improve and extend facilities to accommodate the needs of some 1,650 serving and retired police officers who use the centre each year. The work includes the new – much larger – pool alongside a new hydrotherapy pool and a larger fitness

and exercise hall with a purpose-built spin bike studio. The XPS has been supplied in varying dimensions to accommodate the sloping design of the pool and is an important sub-structure prior to the pouring of the concrete base and tile finish. The pool contractor, John Preston Pool and Spa, says that the Sundolitt XPS allows speed and simplicity of installation with minimal on-site preparation as well as guaranteeing high insulation performance which will help keep energy costs down at the centre –

a crucial factor as 85% of running costs have to come from police donations. The project is due to be completed by spring next year and is being funded by the registered charity “The Police Treatment Centres” which runs Castlebrae. Deputy Chief Executive and centre manager Paul Grant said, “Every 27 minutes a police officer is assaulted on the street. They come to us for help and support – most with the intention of wanting to get back on the front line. The refurbishment of Castlebrae’s treatment pool is vital to many patients’ rehabilitation.” Sundolitt XPS has already proved ideal in industrial floors such as cold stores and chilled warehouses where high insulation, high strength attributes are critical but, in this application, it is helping keep water temperature up and the running costs down as well as providing rigid support and protection against differential heave for the pool. “XPS is now a preferred solution for a wide range of applications where extreme strength is needed combined with high insulation properties. This includes solid flooring and foundations, inverted roofing and for insulating railway lines, airports and roads wherever heavy loads and high moisture levels are encountered” said Bryan Mawer Sundolitt’s Sales Manager Construction Products and their specialist in XPS. www.mclink.co.uk/861-612 ENQUIRY-Card 612
